This paper discusses the type of scaling operations presently in use in underground mines. It defines a scaling factor that is expressed as the area necessary to scale to extract 1 t (1.1 st) of ore. The problems associated with conventional scaling methods are discussed as well as recent developments in mechanized hand-held scaling de- vices and methods of loose detection. The elements of the scaling process are further analyzed. The conception and design of a mechanized scaling device, developed at Universite' Laval is also described. The results of field tests conducted in Quebec hard rock mines are presented. The experimental findings show that the mechanized hand-held scaling device shows potential in improving the productivity and safety of underground mining operations.

The Athabasca tar sands of Alberta are an increasingly important source of crude oil for the North American continent. Published figures indicate estimates of recoverable resources in the tar sands at some 300 billion barrels of synthetic crude of which some 86 billion barrels can be recovered by surface mining techniques. At the present time, two commercial plants are in operation, Great Canadian Oil Sands Limited and Syncrude Canada Ltd. Their present combined capacity is approximately 150,000 barrels per day. Some of the factors which will make this oil expensive will be noted here. The location of the present producing plants is 500 kilometres north of Edmonton at an elevation of approximately 320 metres. Recorded temperatures range from +38 to -55 degrees Celsius. Wind velocities are not high but the chill factor with even a slight breeze and minus 40 degrees is very uncomfortable.

The San Luis deposit of Costilla County, Colorado contains 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two mineable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle "detachment" fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specularite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and may have an indirect genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

Impervious zones in copper waste heaps create a problem in contacting the rock with leaching solutions. These zones are normally associated with compacted layers .formed on the surface of each lift by dump truck traffic and by disintegration of the rock exposed to atmospheric conditions. These layers are usually only a few feet in depth--but, nevertheless, act as barriers to vertical flow causing the leach solution to perch in the heap, Consequently, much of the rock remains untouched and the leach solution breaks out the side of the heap instead of continuing downward to bedrock. One solution to this problem is breaking the hard pans with explosive charges. However, to use explosives means adopting new explosive materials and methods. To use this process successfully requires finding answers to operating conditions inherent to waste heaps. Foremost among these are: (1) type and size of casing that can be used because of limitations brought about by drilling problems, caving and, corrosive conditions; (2) perforating the casing at required levels; (3) an explosive capable of being pumped; (4) obtaining detonation of the, main charges through, the wail of the casing; (5) an explosive with the ability to propagate through the voids of the rubble and one which is not affected by water, acidic solutions, or back pressure conditions from hydrostatic heads; (6) to heave and rupture the compacted zones without chambering or recompressing the waste material.

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water, and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator.

The West German Ruhrkohle AG and the engineering company BEDIA have developed an emission control system for diesel engines that is suitable for use in underground coal mining, consisting of a granular catalytic converter and a dry cooling system. Its first ever application was to a diesel mining locomotive. In the catalytic converter the exhaust gases pass over porous, platinum-covered ceramic balls in a double tube, oxidizing CO to CO2. Simultaneously, soot particles in the gases are subjected to afterburning. Laboratory tests carried out by BEDIA and at Aachen University of Technology showed that there was a reduction of over 80% in the CO content of the exhaust gases and over 30% in soot emission. The dry cooling system fulfills all the requirements demanded of exhaust cooling underground and does not have the disadvantages of conventional systems. It needs little maintenance, and it is light and compact. The most important components are a waterjacketed exhaust manifold, a tube and shell heat exchanger, a new type of flame arrestor in a stacked crimped ribbon design and a Venturi diluter. The system has its own thermostatically-controlled cooling circuit to keep the exhaust temperature between 120° C and 150° C, thus effectively preventing the tubes becoming blocked up.

INTRODUCTION The Uranium Epidemiology Study at the University of New Mexico was initiated in 1977 with the objective of assessing health effects of uranium mining in the Grants, New Mexico, area. The planned approach was a cohort study of mortality that would capitalize on the availability of health records at the Grants Clinic. During the first year, emphasis was placed on determining the feasibility of the proposed study: Were adequate records available? What was the quality of available information? Could a cohort be established? The first year's work confirmed the study's feasibility (Buechley, 1979). Subsequent efforts have focused on the health and exposure data base and comprehensive follow-up. A retrospective cohort study of early miners is in progress; a prospective cohort study of miners who began working under the current Federal standard is planned. This report will summarize the current status of the Uranium Epidemiology Study. A chronology of the study's activities follows (Table 1). TABLE 1. BACKGROUND Uranium Mining in New Mexico The Grants, New Mexico, uranium belt measures some 110 by 25 miles in Cibola, McKinley, and Sandoval counties (Kelley, 1963). The three chief mining districts are, from east to west, Laguna, Grants, and Gallup. Average annual production was about 5,500 tons, or 45% of United States uranium, from 1966 through 1978. Despite a drop in this figure in 1979, to 40%, New Mexico still leads the nation in uranium reserves and production (Hatchell, 1981). In 1918 carnotite, a yellow uranium vanadate, was identified in the Shiprock area (Chenoweth and Learned, 1980; N.M. Energy and Minerals Department, 1981). It received little attention at the time because of its apparently limited volume. In 1950 an important uranium outcropping was discovered by chance in limestone at Haystack Butte, northwest of Grants. In 1951 deposits were discovered in sandstone at Poison Canyon, north of Grants, and at Jackpile, northeast of Laguna. In 1955 finding of radioactive cuttings at an abandoned oil test site near Ambrosia Lake led to drilling and discovery of the first underground deposits (Melancon, 1963). Ore bodies were also found near Church Rock in the 1950's (Rautman, 1977). A uranium rush followed. At various times during 1952-1962, 60 mines and 5 mills were in operation (Gay, 1963). In the early 1960's the price of uranium fell, and many miners left the area. Subsequent market fluctuations have produced shutdowns and consolidations, development and expansion. INTRODUCTION Design and development of new products generally proceeds through a phase of initial development and discovery based on the evolution of existing arts, followed by technical innovation and development based on both pure and applied research. The development of the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) has followed a similar pattern, with the first machines closely resembling continuous coal miners. In general, however, the design of TBM's to date has been more a result of evolution and discovery than of new technical innovation, even though large sums of money have been spent on research and development. In particular, the results of experimental laboratory and field investigations have had little effect on tunnel boring machine design, and the better performance of TBM's today over those of 10 or 15 years ago, is due more to increased mechanical reliability and greater operating experience, than to improvements in penetration rates and rock fracture capability. The improvements made, have been mainly by the machine and cutter manufacturers who recognize the greater efficiency and economic advantage of utilizing large single row cutters with high load capacity along with large edge spacing. Are there any improvements to be made, therefore, in TBM performance without new and dramatic technological breakthroughs? Can TBM manufacturers design greater performance into their machines by a logical extension of the present art, and by applying what has been learned in the laboratory and field? Some, for example, believe that the kerf cutting system of boring rock is at, or close to, its opti¬mum and little improvement can be made in the present TBM concept.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

Modification of clays is necessary for the zearalenone (ZEN), as long-chain mycotoxins, removal. The organic-cations were usually used to modify the clay hydrophobicity to accommodate the large mycotoxin molecules. In this study, tri capryl methylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used in clay modification. Several characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, and TGA were used to identify the d-spacing changes after modification either by TCMA or corn oil. The results of applying the TCMA-corn oil-modified clays in ZEN removal indicated a noticeable improvement where more than 90% of ZEN could be removed in vitro at acidic and neutral pH values. The success of eliminating a high percentage of ZEN molecules is due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clayforming layers. The removal percentage does not depend only on pH but also on the amount of clay used. In addition, the ZEN removal in the presence of corn oil is better at acidic pH and small clay amount where the ZEN can be fully removed.

Asturias, in northern Spain, emits 18 Mt CO2/year to the atmosphere, which supposes the biggest industrial CO2 emissions in the country. In order to avoid CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, keeping the availability of energy from fossil fuels, background studies focussed to the selection of favourable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary. In Asturias, the options for CO2 geological storage are sequestration in deep saline aquifers or sequestration in unexploted coal beds. In the area, there is the biggest coal basin of the country and a great Palaeozoic sedimentary basin with appropriate silicoclastic or carbonated reservoirs and impermeable caprock for CO2 geological storage, located in proximity to thermoelectric power plants and other sources of CO2 emissions. All evidences suggest that CO2 storage in deep aquifers is the most interesting option but a legal planning and a technical regulation are still to be done. The possibility for CO2 sequestration in coal beds is modest and associated to the CBM commercial exploitation. It is necessary to have in mind that the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in Asturias apart of technical factors will depend on price of CO2 ton, legal conditioning and possibility to apply emission rights to projects.

Caterpillar and Fortescue Metals Group have moved forward with the delivery, installation and support of a complete Cat MineStar System at Fortescue?s Solomon iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The complete technology suite was implemented for the first phase of Solomon, the 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy) Firetail manned mine, in October 2012. As part of an autonomous mining solution for phase two, the 40-Mt/a (44-million stpy) Kings Mine, eight Command for hauling Cat 793F CMD trucks were commissioned and commenced operations in the second quarter of 2013. The mine plan calls for a progressive ramp up to 45 autonomous trucks during the next several years. In addition, other Cat MineStar System capability sets, Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, are being used across the mobile equipment fleet, including support equipment and light vehicles. Working closely with Fortescue and its mining contractor, Leighton Contractors, Caterpillar and the Cat dealer in Western Australia, WesTrac, are providing a full solution for managing, operating and supporting Cat MineStar System and Command for hauling. The greenfield Solomon Mine has brought together the skilled team from Caterpillar, Fortescue, Leighton Contractors and WesTrac to deliver an efficient, cost effective autonomous mining solution.

"The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2•H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can be treated further with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. This study focuses on metamodeling of a simulated flowsheet with design of experiments (DOE). Based on literature survey, a process flowsheet was developed using HSC Sim software. The created flowsheet focuses on circulation of solution containing Na+, K+, SO42- ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH treatment of double salt precipitate. The effect of seven parameters (P1-P7) on seven responses (R1-R7) were modeled using central composite design (CCD). INTRODUCTION Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery waste can be considered as an urban mineral due to the presence of valuable metals like: Ni, Co and rare earth elements (REE) (Larsson et al., 2013). In NiMH battery waste leaching experiments, sulfuric acid has often been employed as a lixiviant (Pietrelli et al., 2002,Zhang et al., 1999,Rodrigues and Mansur, 2010,Porvali et al., 2018). The key advantages of sulfuric acid are its stability and cost-effectiveness compared to other mineral acids such as HCl and HNO3. However, the usage of sulfuric acid in NiMH battery waste leaching poses simultaneous challenges and advantages. Limited REE solubility can be taken as benefit when recovering REEs double sulfates after solid-liquid separation. However, sodium and potassium hydroxide, present in electrolyte residues in the battery waste, can cause in-situ precipitation already during leaching due to limited solubility, thus decreasing the total REE recovery (Porvali et al., 2018). However, this problem can be circumvented by washing the electrolyte residues off the raw materials. Subsequently, the REEs may be precipitated in bulk as a mixed double salt out from the solution at very low pH with minimal co-precipitation of Ni and other metals. This relatively easy separation method can be extremely advantageous in the case of such a complex solution matrix with relatively high REE concentrations (conc.). Once REEs have been precipitated as double sulfates as per eq. (1) (Porvali et al., 2018), the resulting double salt precipitate lacks applications without further treatment. Direct thermal treatment would generate sulfur dioxide emissions and likely require high temperatures in order to transform double sulfates into REE oxides. Furthermore, the precipitate contains Na ions, which would need to be removed by chemical treatment from the calcined REE product. In the context of circularity of raw materials, it can be taken of a remarkable benefit if the sodium and sulfur present in the double salt could be reused instead of wasting them into the side streams. To that end, in this simulation study, the double salts are converted by dissolution and precipitation to hydroxides which are readily treatable, e.g. with total dissolution and solvent extraction, for further purification (Abreu and Morais, 2010):

The mine environment is dynamic and operating conditions change continually and are difficult to predict. New equipment, variable geological conditions, modified layouts, and different equipment operators make monitoring and control system difficult to apply without continual software maintenance. The paper reports on algorithms that were developed, encoded with Knowledge Craft Tools, and tested on underground coal mine data to adapt to the dynamic environment. The system receives data from sensors in near real time and then identifies patterns in the data. Using a set of mode features the data is automatically checked to determine the present operating mode. When the operating mode changes from the previous shifts, the system automatically learns the new mode characteristics and uses that mode context for further data analysis. The concepts presented in this paper are applicable to a wide variety of mining scenarios, not just underground coal mining.

This paper describes an economical method of upgrading a clay deposit using conventional separation processes into a suitable cement plant feed. The natural size difference of clay and silica in the clay deposit is utilized in the dry air classification device. A case study in which the raw material from a clay deposit is converted into a portland cement plant feed is presented.

Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.
