"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."

Papua New Guinea (PNG) stretches from the equator to Latitude 12° South and from Indonesia's Irian Jaya Province in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east (Figure 1). The population totals 3.5 million people who are mostly concentrated in highland valleys on the main island and around the coast. This paper outlines the history of mining, describes the natural, cultural and regulatory setting of mineral discoveries and highlights, by example, some of the more idiosyncratic environ-mental aspects of mining developments in PNG. It concludes with remarks on the progress made in the fifteen years since environmental matters entered the agenda for the establishment of a new mine in PNG.

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends in large measure on economic activity, which rose in each quarter of 1985. However, despite 1.7 million new housing starts and a 7% increase in motor vehicle production, many domestic metal mining operations experienced continued difficulties as a result of import competition, greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing, and downsizing of motor vehicles. Recognizing the continued difficulties of the domestic metal mining industry, many corporations made major efforts to retrench and rationalize - selling, closing, or spinning off less profitable operations, renegotiating labor contracts, and inviting increased participation by foreign firms. About 15% of US energy was imported in 1985. This included $52 billion worth of crude oil and refined products, adding significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $149 billion. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw materials, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult US nonfuel minerals trade deficit totalled $17 billion. The US continued to rely on imports for many important strategic minerals in 1985 (see accompanying Table). Increased pressures for protection included major mineral products such as steel, ferroalloys, and copper. But President Reagan, in his Feb. 1986 "Economic Report to the Congress" stated: "Our international trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets." He also stressed the need for fair trade and more open markets internationally. The National Critical Materials Council, created by law in the latter part of 1984, was activated in the latter part of 1985. Its first public hearing was held in January 1986. The Council is to review the nation's materials posture and advise the President on such matters. Compared with 1984, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 2%, to $24 billion. This supported the production of $244 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - fell 4% to 81 Mt (89 million st). Consequently, domestic iron ore production fell to 49 Mt (55 million st), about 97% pelletized. Iron ore imports fell 7% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity fell 4% to 117 Mt (129 million st). Pacts with 16 leading steel exporting nations have been negotiated in an effort to reduce import penetration of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 40% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production increased slightly to 49 kt (54,000 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, also fell slightly to 1.1 kt (1200 st) of contained metal. Even the domestic aluminum smelting industry suffered reverses as high stocks and low prices reduced production 16% to 3.5 Mt (3.8 million st). Similarly, imports of bauxite fell 7% and alumina 10%. Production of magnesium metal fell 6% to 136 kt (150,000 st), while titanium metal production remained unchanged at 22 kt (24,000 st). Copper mine production was unchanged at 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Copper refinery production fell slightly to 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Lead mine production rose 24% to 400 kt (440,000 st). Zinc mine output was down 10%, to 225 kt (250,000 st). Refined lead production increased 28%, to 510 kt (560,000 st). Primary slab zinc production fell 5% to 240 kt (260,000 st).

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

As the importance of particle shape in mineral processing is increasingly recognized as an major variable in predicting the behavior of both individual particles and particle systems, whether it be in dense media, froth flotation, comminution or the flow of particles, new method of shape characterization are being developed, particularly for use on image analyzers. These shape characterization methods may be broadly classified into the analytical, empirical and physical formation methods. Discussed are approaches and the strengths and weakness of each of these methods. Moreover old and new shape measuring techniques are reviewed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Fractal, Walsh and Delta as well as a variety of other techniques such as tabling, the Cascadograph, settling and L/D ratios. Also discussed are the problems of doing shape research, current progress and the future of the field.

The test work was done in two parts. In Part I, five 6 x 16 mesh activated coconut shell carbon samples made by four different manufacturers were evaluated as to their gold loading rate and total gold loading. The five carbon samples tested are not identified by manufacturer and are simply designated as Types A through E. Then from the carbons tested, a suitable highly active carbon was selected for subsequent studies on impurity effects upon loading, Part II. Test Procedures The procedures and tests descriptions are given for the ultimate gold carbon loading tests and the dynamic gold carbon loading tests.

Speed and torque control of standard A.C. induction motors can be accomplished using a variety of devices ranging from mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical. Also, the motor can be specified as an A.C. wound rotor or D.C. motor using the associated controls. Normally, any one of these drive types can be adequately used to provide the torque control necessary to accelerate a conveyor belt system. The selection will depend on the economics, experience, and preference of the designer or end user. These drive types will be presented from a functional and performance viewpoint to assist in the understanding of the available technology.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. DPM exposure is therefore regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The current monitoring process takes days or weeks for exposure levels to be known, and a real-time monitoring device is needed. It is believed that infrared spectroscopy has potential for use in a real-time, field-portable device. This paper presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios.

This article could be entitled "The Rediscovery of the Windfall Mine," since it was originally discovered early in this century. The "Rediscovery" was made by personnel of Idaho Mining Corp. during the course of an investigation of the Windfall mine beginning in 1967. There had been historic production from the Windfall mine sporadically from 1908 until 1951 and there was present during much of this time a mill that vat leached crushed ore. Mining was underground to a depth of 91 m (300 ft). Prior to Idaho's activities, the mine had been inactive since the early 1950s. Idaho Mining Corp. was an "exploration company," privately owned and based in Reno, NV. The writer was at that time manager of exploration for Idaho Mining. The company held interests in the Cortez Gold mine, then being readied for production, and had conducted exploration for various mineral commodities in Nevada for several years. Idaho's attention was first directed to the Windfall mine in the Eureka District, Eureka County, Nevada (see Fig. 1, Nevada map) by a search of published geologic literature of the state of Nevada. An attempt was made to acquire a library consisting of all of the published geo-data for the state of Nevada as well as to obtain as much of the unpublished material as could be acquired. A study of these data, and in particular Tom Nolan's Professional Paper 406 (1962), indicated that the Windfall mine was anomalous for the Eureka District in that it contained deposits of disseminated gold. This source and other sources indicated that the Windfall had produced from underground operations approximately 59 kt (65,000 tons) grading 12.6 g/t (0.368 oz per ton) gold ore that was processed in a vat leaching operation and that the gold was "invisible" to the naked eye and could not be panned. It was ascertained that there were no active operations near the mine and a geologic reconnaissance was made and a few samples were taken to attempt to determine if the mineralization was indeed disseminated. The initial group of samples around the mine area averaged 1.25 ppm [11.5 g/t gold (0.036 oz per ton)] and the mineralization did appear to disseminate into the wallrock. The next step involved researching the ownership of property in the immediate area of the mine, and [ ] a property map was constructed that showed six or seven different ownerships of patented and unpatented claims, as well as some open ground, in the target area. Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

A new process for the recovery of pure (>99.95%) palladium and platinum is described. The process, which has been tested at the pilot scale, comprises (i) the simultaneous solvent extraction of palladium and platinum by a new Schering Berlin reagent, TN 1911, (ii) washing of the loaded extractant to remove co- extracted impurities, and (iii) differential stripping of first platinum at pH 3, and secondly palladium with strong hydrochloric acid, and (iv) precipitation of palladium and platinum salts, followed by reduction to metal. The process is, unusually, a non-ammonia one requiring only small amounts of ammonia at the end where final purification may be necessary for particularly complex feed solutions.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. Reviewing events in the minerals industry, in economic geology, and in my own exploration work, I find that the most compelling subject for comment is the increasing ferment in ore deposits theory. New discoveries and continued investigations of bedded deposits of lead and zinc, copper, iron, uranium, etc., coupled with the availability of much new and significant data from sedimentary and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and oceanography, has led many economic geologists like myself to become disenchanted with former simplistic notions. Now disenchantment among serious people should presuppose both valid objections to the old, and valid new substitutes. I can sum up my own position and, I believe, what most of the recent writers on ore deposits theory are trying to tell us, by saying that a physico-chemical (bench science) approach to a natural science is neither correct nor useful, and that the obvious cure is a return to the study of the geology of ore deposits. More specifically, ore should be viewed merely as an unusual concentration produced, in stages, by the natural processes inherent in the geochemical cycle. In criticizing the conceptual basis of a science, one is involved simultaneously in the inherent character of the science, its subject matter, and the old and new concepts. I have found it impossible to make a clean separation along those lines. As a result, and as the title suggests, these are not-quite-random reflections on genesis, a matter near and dear to all true treasure hunters since Agricola.

The history of coal mining in the United States of America and the rest of the world is replete with mine explosions and consequent loss of lives. Serious efforts in the USA to recover methane prior to mining and post mining started about forty years ago. CONSOL Energy Inc. and government agencies, e.g., the erstwhile US Bureau of Mines developed several techniques of methane drainage, such as in-mine horizontal drilling, vertical gob wells, hydrofracing of vertical wells and horizontal drilling from surface. With the current technology, thirty to sixty percent of total methane emissions from a mine can be captured making the mines much safer and more productive. Drained methane is often marketed to defray the cost of methane drainage. This paper is an anthology of these developments and describes how coalbed methane, which used to be a bane, has become a boon for the coalmining industry.

Introduction There has been much publicity of the boom and bust in oil and gas well drilling in the US, and many comments on oil and gas gluts. Despite this, the drilling industry remains the largest consumer of functional industrial minerals. The boom years of 1981 and 1982, compared with the bust year of 1983, show a sharp reduction in the consumption of industrial minerals-1981, 7.4Mt (8.2 million st); 1982, 6.3 Mt (7 million st); and 1983, 4.4 Mt (4.9 million st). Industrial mineral use rebounded in 1984 to 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). This was the second highest year in history in terms of wells drilled and third highest in footage drilled. Table 1 shows the history of drilling activity and mineral consumption from 1971 to 1984. The uses of functional industrial minerals in oil and gas well drilling were detailed by Miles and Blair (ME, 1983, October, pp. 1397-1400). As an update, this article addresses only the changes that have occurred in the industry in the past two-and-a-half years. It will be directed to mineral use and new products introduced to the industry. Drilling practices A partial explanation of where wells are being drilled with lower quantities of minerals consumed is: • In the boom year of 1981, there was a proliferation of number of suppliers chasing the same business. This resulted in multiple sourcing, multiple warehousing, and a huge increase in inventory that became surplus in the following years. The bust year, 1983, caused a severe shakeout in the number of suppliers of minerals and associated drilling fluids. • In 1981 and 1982, the wild speculation in the oil and gas industry led to drilling of speculative deep gas wells. Oil wells were drilled on a wildcat basis - in areas of unproven productivity. • Presently, the oil and gas well drilling industry is very active. But drilling is directed toward proven areas of production and working over old wells for increased production. This means a large number of wells are being drilled with lower average foot-

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

INTRODUCTION In the mining industry, timing in land acquisitions can be of the essence. In order to secure promising lands, deals are often negoti- ated quickly and evidenced by letters of intent containing what the parties feel are the essential terms of the deal. In some cases, a company is willing to acquire land only if it can lock up a number of promising properties, and so a "non-binding" letter of intent is used to formalize the essential terms, while leaving the company without legal liability. Later, the letters of intent will be sent to a lawyer to prepare a formal acquisition agreement. Many times, how- ever, especially in a land acquisition rush, another company will attempt to better the deal prior to the execution of that formal agreement, and the first company will be forced to rely on the initial letter of intent, only to find out to its chagrin that it has no deal In other cases, the company holding the desired property is another mining company, and the negotiation of an option or joint venture is the only way the first company can acquire an interest in the desired land. In order to make its offer more attractive, it may have to reveal confidential or proprietary information about the property or the surrounding lands. Here, too, letters of intent are often used to formalize the essential points of the agreement. Once again, however, prior to the execution of a formal joint venture agreement, the transaction may collapse and the letter of intent prove to be only that. INTRODUCTION Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of any large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently taken on new importance as deeper lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface min¬ing methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving. Announced discoveries or indications that may be amenable to caving include: Climax's Mt. Emmons molybdenum discovery in Colorado; Molycorp's Goat Hill molybdenum prospect in New Mexico; the Phelps Dodge molybdenum deposit in Beaver County, UT; Arizona copper occurrences such as Asarco's Sacaton, Hanna's Casa Grande, Noranda's Lakeshore, and Ken¬necott's Safford; Anaconda's suspected deep copper de¬posit in Butte, MT; Anaconda's Carr Fork, UT, deposit; and perhaps others. CAVABILITY'S ROLE IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES Caving is a system of underground mining which removes support from underneath an ore body. As a result, the rock mass fractures, fails, and flows vertically downward by gravity to be collected in previously ex¬cavated funnels. Types of ore that have been mined by caving include molybdenum, copper, iron, nickel, as¬bestos, and diamonds (Julin and Tobie, 1973). It is primarily a large-scale method, with production rates of more than 45 300 t/d (50,000 stpd) having been achieved. However, the initial capital investment before return is very high, often in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The cavability of an ore body or mineral occurrence is a critical item in the feasibility study of a proposed mine, not only from the point of overall minability, but from the point of impact on other costs such as blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, and grade recovered. Aside from the often-asked question of, "Will it or will it not cave?" the real questions are, "Can we afford to make it cave, carry the rock away, and extract the mineral?" The last is not a topic of this chapter, but the first two are. The cavability of an ore deposit or mineral occur¬rence is based on many things, but clearly, if a large enough area is undermined, any rock mass will cave. The result could be a violent collapse as occurred at Urad, CO (Kendrick, 1970), or perhaps the rock mass will cave beyond the ore boundary. Another unfavor¬able result could be ore blocks that are too large for the equipment and orepasses to handle without considerable secondary blasting. Weak rock with numerous fractures may produce a very fine ore when it caves, resulting in dilution and ground control problems. DETERMINING STRUCTURAL DOMAINS It has long been recognized that the geologic nature of an ore body is important to cavability (King, 1946). Such items as weak rock material, intensity of fractur¬ing, and severity of faulting all contribute to the success of a caving operation, and information regarding these is required as a minimum for the cavability determination. In practice, the rock mass-defined as the blocks of intact rock together with the intervening fractures, joints, faults, bedding planes, and other discontinuities-that contains the ore body, as well as the surrounding and overlying rock, must be examined in a systematic and detailed fashion. Surficial geology maps must be pre¬pared, exploration holes drilled, and core logged for en¬gineering information. The fracturing of the rock mass must be studied to ascertain the three-dimensional dis¬tribution of fractures and their characteristics, and faults must be located and described. The strength and other mechanical properties of the rock material, the fracture surfaces, and the fault filling materials must be tested and reported for later use by designers and planners. With this basic information and an understanding of the geologic setting, the rock mass can be divided into one or more structural domains which tend to behave similarly in response to engineering activities (Robertson and Piteau, 1970). One must keep in mind that the determination of the structural domains goes beyond the geologic units present. Several lithologic units may be lumped together, while a single lithologic unit can be divided into multiple domains. Major faults often form their own domain, and the direction of engineering ac¬tivity-for example, cave advance to the north rather than the south-may alter rock mass behavior, resulting in different domains. As an example of the detailed rock fracture map¬ping required for such studies, the structural domain determinations at the Climax mine (Kendorski, 1973) are shown in Fig. 1. The circles are Schmidt equal area projections of the three-dimensional attitudes of frac¬tures (Ramsay, 1967) mapped in detail at various rock exposures. The attitude of fractures is important to the cavability determination since it dictates the directional behavior of the rock mass as it fails, and determines the effectiveness of arching, keying, and rock block inter¬locking. Low-angle fractures must be present to allow movement of the rock in the vertical direction during undermining (Mahtab and Dixon, 1976); if low-angle planes of weakness are absent, the rock mass may arch with a keystone effect, rather than moving vertically downward.
