In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized longwall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than about 45°. As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result with less rock fall capacity. The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. The two-dimensional predominance area (Kellogg) diagram (PAD) surfaces bounding the three-dimensional Cu-As-S-O system were constructed at 900 K. The computations employed gases As4O6(g), O2(g), and SO2(g) as the independent coordinate species to generate diagrams of As4O6(g) − O2(g),O2(g) − SO2(g), and As4O6(g) − SO2(g), while the third gas (As4O6, O2, or SO2) was fixed. The results indicate that there is no shared boundary between enargite (Cu3AsS4) and copper sulfate (CuSO4); however, at PO2 < 10−6 atm, PAs4O6 < 10−10 atm, and PSO2 > 10−4 atm, CuSO4 is the stable phase at 900 K. The chemical driving force for oxidation of intermediate phases between enargite and copper sulfate is substantial except for basic sulfate (CuO · CuSO4).

Landsvirkjun—the national electric power company of Iceland—is building the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. Two glacial river systems will be dammed and channeled through a series of tunnels into a 690 MW underground powerhouse. The Project has a total of 73 km of tunnels to be excavated of which mosthave been completed. From three access adits, three large diameter (7.2 m to 7.6 m),main-beam, gripper-type, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being used to complete50-km of the waterway tunnel. Using the TBMs was a first in Iceland to excavate the complex Icelandic basalt formations, which consist of inclined layers of hard basaltic flows with weaker scoriaceous and sedimentary interbeds. Faults, fissures and dykes that frequently cross the lava flows posed both geologic and hydrogeologic difficulties to the TBM tunneling. This paper describes the extreme challenges that the men and equipment had to endure to complete the tunneling, including the harsh winter weather on the surface and the cold, abundant ground water inflows within the tunnels.

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

China’s burgeoning economy is responsible for a major share of recent world mineral consumption increases. In addition to factors traditionally recognized in market economies1 and factors unique to specific commodities, Chinese consumption now plays a major and increasingly important role in energy and mineral markets for many commodities, such as aluminum, copper, iron and steel, and oil. China has the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And its long-term importance to the minerals markets is even greater than indicated by its gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently less than two-thirds of that of the United States (Table 1). This is because China’s rising standard of living is accompanied by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Its consumption of mineral materials for infrastructure development for its very large population is significantly greater per capita than that of such developed economies as the United States, the European Union and Japan. In other words, China’s per capita production is rising at a rapid rate and will probably continue to do so for many years.

With the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), and the implementation of state permanent programs, underground coal mining operations are for the first time subject to government regulations regarding subsidence. These regulations now and in the future will directly affect the manner in which mining companies mine their coal. Since the promulgation of the original final regulations by OSM, numerous changes in those regulations have been made and many additional changes are pending in the near future. This paper will discuss state and federal approaches to regulating underground coal mines and examine issues surrounding future subsidence regulations.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

Introduction Newmont Mining Corp.&apos;s Carlin Gold Mining Co. mines gold ore and waste material from four open-pit mines in Northeastern Nevada. Combined production rate is 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy). The company is producing gold bullion from the 2.4 kt/d (2600 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 1. and the 2.3 kt/d (2600 stpd) Maggie Creek heap leaching plant. In August 1985, the 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 2 at Gold Quarry came on-line. The total combined throughput of 11.2 kt/d (12,000 stpd) will make Carlin Gold Mining one of the largest US gold producers. Feasibility studies are underway to increase the total gold out-put from Gold Quarry. This will be done by adding a continuous dump-leaching process that will recover gold from lower grade ore. History In 1961, Newmont exploration geologists located claims in the Lynn Creek mining district near Carlin, NV. An exploration drilling program revealed significant gold mineralization. A stepped-up drilling program revealed an ore body with an estimated 10 Mt (11 million st) of ore containing 109 t (3.5 million oz) of gold. Test results in 1963 allowed metallurgists to develop the flowsheet and design for a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) countercurrent decantation (CCD) cyanide plant. Carlin Gold Mining Co. was formed to operate the property. Carlin purchased its first mining equipment in 1965. This consisted of two Bucyrus-Erie 2.7 m3 (3.5 cu yd) shovels and nine 27.2 t (30 st) Wabco Haulpak trucks, two Inger¬soll-Rand track-mounted drills, one Chicago Pneumatic T-650 rotary drill, one rubber tired Michigan 280 dozer, one Caterpillar D-8 36A track dozer, one Caterpillar 16 motor grader, and the necessary ancillary equipment. The fleet was capable of mining 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 mil¬lion stpy) working two eight-hour shifts, five days a week. In 1967, one P&H 1500 3.8 m3(5 cu yd) diesel electrical shovel and three 59 t (65 st) Dart trucks were added to the fleet, along with a Chicago Pneumatic rubber tire mounted rotary drill. This equipment addition increased the mining capabilities to 5.7 Mt/a (6.3 million stpy). Three separate pits, the Main, East, and West, within a 1.6-km (1-mile) radius of the Carlin mill were being mined. The crew consisted of 46 hourly men and three supervisors. This equals 497 t/ total hourly manshift (548 st) or 407 t/total manshift (515 st). Rising gold prices in the early 1970s allowed lower grade deposits to be mined at greater distances from the mill. The Boot-strap pit, 19.3 km (12 miles) north of Carlin, was started in 1973. The Los Angeles Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension (MGLEE) extends Metro’s light rail system to the densely populated and growing East Los Angeles communities. Much of the 6 mile alignment consists of at-grade track, but the project also features a1.7 mile underground segment in cut-and-cover and twin-bored tunnel structures. In light of past experiences with open shield construction, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) specified, for the first time, use of Pressure Face Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) to advance tunnels through soft ground. This paper describes the history of the tunnel design, construction management, and construction methods adopted that resulted in successfully completing the tunneling segment.
