A study was made to determine those petrographic parameters that are correlative with carbonate-aggregate quality as indicated by the Los Angeles abrasion and absorption tests. Samples collected at 28 sites in northern and eastern Indiana were analyzed petrographically, chiefly for void content, grain size, grain-size variation, grain shape, and grain interlock. Most of the sampled sites are in the belt of Silurian rocks of east-central and north- western Indiana. Though a few sites lie outside this belt, most of these have only a thin Devonian section above the Silurian. Three sites are non-Silurian and are included for comparison. Most of the samples studied are from Middle and Upper Silurian units. Both biohermal and nonbiohermal facies are included. The biohermal rocks are typically dense but vugular, finely crystalline granular dolomite. Nonbiohermal facies are porous, medium to coarsely crystalline, granular dolomite with dolomite rhombs The Los Angeles abrasion losses ranged from 20 to 46 per cent, the rocks in the eastern part of the state showing the higher values. Absorption tests indicate the same general quality trend. Comparison of petrographic studies with Los Angeles abrasion- and absorption-test results indicate the following correlations. (1) As per, cent of voids increases, quality decreases. (2) As average grain size increases, quality decreases. (3) Variations from mean grain size appear to have no effect on the quality. (4) As angularity and roughness of the grains increase, quality increases. (5) As grain-to-grain interlock increases, quality increases. Variations in the calcium-magnesium ratio have no apparent effect on aggregate quality, except as they affect the texture.

The last few years have produced new methods of characterizing flow properties of bulk solids. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field condi¬tions. In addition, the effect of large par¬ticles on a material's flow properties (cohe¬sive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of var¬ious additives such as freeze conditioning agents. New developments have occurred with devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to find¬ing ways, by using inserts, to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls. Such devices can also provide reli¬able in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids or completely nonsegregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. The technology and hardware for running bench scale flow tests on bulk solids samples and transforming the results into reliable designs has been in existence for nearly 30 years (Jenike, 1964; Marinelli and Carson, 1986). It has been shown repeatedly that reliable materials handling systems can be designed to avoid the problems of no-flow due to arching or rat-holing, erratic flow, segregation, loss of capacity, or spontaneous combustion. Running flow properties tests and carefully designing a bulk handling system are not expensive, particularly when compared to downtime costs and continual flow problems. New developments in characterizing flow properties of bulk solids include: • a shear tester for measuring the properties of run-of-mine ores containing large par¬ticles; • attrition testers to simulate a wide range of flow conditions; • a tester to measure the wear rate of liners in bins, feeder parts, etc.; • a dustiness tester to measure the potential for dust and the effect of dust control meas¬ures; and • techniques for measuring the strength of frozen ores and the effect of freeze condi¬tioning agents. In the area of improving the flow of bulk solids, there are new techniques for ensuring reliable flow without using up excessive headroom. These include: • belt-to-belt transfer chutes to handle po¬tentially sticky, abrasive, and dusty ores; • designs for the interface between a bin/ hopper and apron or belt feeders to avoid hangups and minimize feeder loads; methods to feed solids reliably into a pres¬surized process; and designs for handling systems that will mini¬ mize attrition, avoid segregation, or auto¬matically blend materials together. Characterizing flow properties Large shear cell It has long been known that the cohesive strength of a bulk solid is due mainly to its fine fraction. However, the effect of the larger particles (that were assumed to re¬duce the strength) could not be measured. The development of larger scale (205 mm¬diam and 0.6 x 0.9 m or 8 in.-diam and 2 x 3 ft) shear testers has made it possible to measure the properties of a wider range of materials. Now cohesive strength measurements can be made with up to 100 mm (4 in.) particles. The results obtained from the large shear testers, together with the results of the nor¬mal shear tests on the fine fraction, are used in the design of reliable stockpile reclaim systems and crusher feed systems. A high percentage of large particles can reduce the measured shear strength of a bulk solid. However, segregation may alter the size distribution and should therefore be considered (Carson, Royal, and Goodwill, 1986). In addition, larger particles will

The Courthouse Commons SEM Tunnel was excavated within 6 feet of cover beneath two buildings in downtown San Diego utilizing high-precision geotechnical instrumentation. The excavated dimensions are approximately 25 feet in diameter and 328 feet in length connecting two in-service detentionlevel security buildings. Presupport includes large-diameter grouted canopy pipes and smaller pipe spiles. Initial support consists of fiber-reinforced shotcrete with lattice girders. This paper presents observed ground and structure behavior and lessons learned. There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. While our education system is failing the students it is supposed to serve, other countries are doing far better. In a

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required, under Section 114(c) of Public Law 95-604, to provide a report to Congress identifying the location, and potential health, safety and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes together with recommendations, if any, for a program to eliminate the hazards. The approach taken to prepare the report was to develop model active and inactive mines and locate them in a typical mining area to estimate their environmental impact. A list of uranium mines was acquired from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The inactive mines were separated from the list and sorted into surface and underground categories. A literature search was conducted to obtain and consolidate available information concerning the environmental aspects of uranium mining and shortterm field surveys and studies were conducted to augment this information base. Radioactivity emission rates were measured or estimated for each mining category and were entered into computor codes to assess population exposures and subsequent health risks. The general environmental condition of inactive uranium mines was determined by walk-through surveys in several mining areas. INACTIVE SURFACE MINES We assumed that a model inactive surface mine contains a single pit with the wastes (overburden and sub-ore) stacked into a pile adjacent to the pit area. No credit for reclamation is given to the model mine. In lieu of the availability of individual mine production statistics, the model surface mine size was established from the total ore and waste production statistics for all surface mines, divided by the number of inactive surface mines. The number of inactive mines, obtained from the DOE mine listing, are summarized by type and location (Table 1). For modeling, we assumed that there are 1,250 inactive surface mines. The total or cumulative waste and ore production for inactive surface mines from 1950 to 1978 is not fully documented. Uranium mine waste and ore production statistics, on an annual basis, were available for both surface and underground producers from 1959 to 1976 (D0159-76). In order to estimate waste accumulated prior to 1959, the waste-to-ore ratios from the 1959 to 1976 period were plotted vs. time and line-fitted by regression analysis (Figure 1). Unfortunately, the extrapolation of the line to years prior 1959 approached zero in 1954 although surface mining began in 1950. Therefore, a waste-to-ore ratio of 8:1 was used for the period of 1950 to 1959 based on ratios estimated by Clark (C174). The waste to-ore ratios for 1976 to 1978 were estimated using the line established in Figure 1. By using waste-to-ore ratios and ore production data, the cumulative waste and ore production for both surface and underground uranium mining is estimated to 1978 (Table 2). The estimated cumulative waste from uranium surface mining for 1950 to 1978 is 1.73 x 109 MT. A crude estimate of the waste accumulated at the model inactive surface mine can be made by dividing the total waste produced to 1978 by the number of inactive mines. This, however, overestimates the waste tonnage because some of the contemporary wastes are being produced by active mines, and the waste accumulated at newer mines has increased in recent years. To adjust for this overestimate, we assumed that all mines operating in 1970 will be inactive by 1978. This eight year period is approximately one-half the lifetime of a model

On June 16, 1982, Rio Blanco submitted a request to the US Minerals Management Service for a suspension of operations under its federal oil shale lease. The company also wanted a five-year delay in the requirement for further minimum royalty payments and a five-year extension of the primary lease terms of 20 years. The request was granted in late July in the midst of yet another slump in oil shale activity. Rio Blanco holds one of four Federal oil shale leases that were granted under the Interior Department's Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program in 1974. That year the DOI offered for lease six federal oil shale tracts, two each in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The leases in Colorado and Utah were granted for substantial bo¬nus bids as shown in Table 1, but the Wyoming tracts had no takers. In the eight years hence, no oil shale has been produced commercially. Indeed, the prospects for successful oil shale development have fluctuated widely, continuing a 60-year- old cyclical pattern in the fledgling industry. The prototype program was developed and initiated while this infant industry struggled to begin anew, without the benefit of any federal oil shale leasing regulations, or any history of federal oil shale leasing at all. Permanent regulations were not required because the effort was limited and designed to provide the foundation for any future leasing program. Section 21 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920, a Nov. 30,1973 Federal Register notice, and the leases themselves constitute the legal and regulatory framework for leasing and developing prototype oil shale tracts. The prototype leases contain some unusual provisions including installment payments of the bonus bids, credit of early development costs against payments due the government, adjustment of royalty rates according to regional crude oil price fluctuations, and unusually extensive and detailed environmental stipulations. Several of the provisions were intended to provide incentives for early development and financial penalties for failure to develop. The requirement for minimum royalty payments in lieu of actual production royalties beginning in the sixth year of the lease falls in the latter category. After the sixth year, the required minimum payment is increased east year through the 15th year by an increment equal to that due in the sixth year. The minimum royalty then remains the same through the final five years of the primary lease term. Minimum royalty is calculates on a different production level for each prototype lease, based on the quantity of 125 L/t (30 gal/st) shale estimated to be recoverable from. each tract by room-and-pillar mining. That mining system was selected for reference as the only proven extraction method for oil shale at that time (early 1970s) The minimum royalty (production) rate was calculated for each tract by direct comparison of its estimated recoverable 125-L (30-gal) resource to a hypothetical tract containing 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st) of recoverable 125-L (30-gal) shale. For the hypothetical lease tract, the minimum production for the sixth year was calculated to be 3.2 kt/d (3,500 stpd), increasing by a like amount each lease year through the 15th to a daily production rate of 31.7 kt (35,000 st). Under this formula, the hypothetical lease tract would yield $16 million in minimum royalty payments over the 20-year primary lease term if there were no production, no development credits taken, and no adjustment of the royalty rate due to fluctuation of regional crude oil prices. The production rate of 31.7 kt/d (35,000 stpd) was a somewhat arbitrary figure that was considered, in the early 1970s, to represent a minimum size for a commercial oil shale operation. A production rate of 7.9 dam3/d (50,000 bbls/day) soon supplanted that smaller mine production figure as a rule of thumb for the minimum size for a commercial facility. The proportional relation-

In recent years, beneficiation tests were conducted on high dolomite phosphate samples from Florida by the authors from China Lianyungang Design and Research Institute (CLDRI). The research results indicated that flotation is the most effective process for recovering phosphate from Florida high dolomitic pebble. Other operations like scrubbing, desliming and selective grinding might work to some extent, but they could only be applied as supplementary approaches in some cases. Heavy media separation and calcination-digestion technologies are hard to produce satisfactory performance. This paper presents the results of both lab scale and pilot plant tests on Florida high dolomite phosphate pebble using the fine particle flotation technology developed by CLDRI. Some discussions are made on the concerns of Florida phosphate industry and further research.

My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

8.1 INTRODUCTION Several methods currently exist by which gold may be recovered from a pregnant leach liquor. Two of these methods are discussed in this chapter, the Merrill-Crowe (zinc cementation) process and the carbon adsorption process. These two methods represent the most frequently used techniques for gold extraction and are, -in fact, used almost exclusively in U.S. heap leaching operations. Because of the efficiency and ease of use of these two methods, it is extremely likely they will continue to be quite prevalent within the gold mining industry in years to come. The remainder of this chapter includes information on the history of the two processes, descriptions of the actual processes, criteria to consider in selecting a recovery process, and commercial design and construction considerations for both of the gold recovery methods. As with other chapters in this book, some fairly technical information is presented for the benefit of those readers needing a greater level of detail. However, the overall intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of the processes likely to be used in gold extraction, thus giving the reader a firm basis for more technical research into the topic, should this be needed. 8.1.1 History of Zinc Cementation During the late 18901s, zinc cementation was introduced for the precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide solutions. This occurred at about the same time as the introduction of the cyanidation process, the history of which is recapped in Chapter 1. The initial cementation process involved introduction of a gold-bearing cyanide solution onto a bed of zinc shavings. It proved to be quite inefficient because the reaction rate was very slow. The zinc quickly became "passive", inhibiting further gold deposition. Shortly after this first introduction, zinc precipitation was improved by adding a lead salt (usually lead nitrate) to the zinc. This allowed a zinc-lead couple to form on the surface of the shavings, eliminating passivation of zinc surfaces and thereby allowing continued deposition of gold. Most of us are aware of the relationship between the golden-yellow resin spots on Upper Cretaceous Wasatch Plateau coals and fossil tree resins (?amber?). Nevertheless, confusion remains about the exact chemical composition and structure of commercial coal resin preparations as well as their observed heterogeneity. In order to arrive at a more detailed chemical description we need to distinguish between micropetrographic, organic geochemical and process technological definitions of coal resins, which may include substantial quantities of constituents unrelated to fossil tree resins. New information on composition and origin obtained by Curie-point pyrolysis/evaporation in combination with isobutane chemical ionization mass spectrometry, as presented in this paper, points to the presence of four more or less distinct resin components: (1) a sesquiterpenoid polymer; (2) sesqui-and triterpenoid monomers and dimers; (3) a suite of triterpenoid alcohols, ketones and acids; and (4) a series of increasingly aromatized hydrocarbons with naphthalene and picene type skeletons. Moreover, a strong similarity is found between the composition of recent Dammar resin and fossil Wasatch Plateau coal resins. Some of the technological implications of these findings and the consequent need for a more precise chemical definition and nomenclature are discussed.

The production of soda ash from trona (sodium sesquicarbonate, Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O) resources has completely displaced the production of synthetic soda ash in the USA. Further, the utilization of other trona resources is under consideration in China, Turkey, etc. Recent research has been concerned with the development of flotation technology for the trona industry. In this regard studies on the flotation behavior of sodium carbonate salts: trona, sodium carbonate monohydrate and decahydrate, as well as the flotation behavior of sodium bicarbonate, are reported for both cationic (dodecyl ammonium hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) collectors. It has been found that strong flotation of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved with 100% recovery, while the other sodium carbonate salts do not float well. These results have been explained by FTIR analysis of aqueous solutions of Na2CO3and NaHCO3in a range of concentrations from very dilute to saturated conditions. The changes in the shape of the O-H stretching band of water are correlated with the flotation behavior of Na2CO3salts and NaHCO3. In addition, the absorption band of the carbonate ion at ca. 1385 cm-1is used to monitor its interactions with water and/or other ions in solution. The infrared results demonstrate thatNa2CO3acts as a water structure maker, leading to an extensively hydrated surface that accounts for the poor flotation of most sodium carbonate salts. In contrast, NaHCO3does not have this characteristic and consequently complete flotation is possible with both cationic and anionic collectors. These results support the previous water structure analysis for soluble salt flotation of alkali halides and other oxyanion salts.

The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) assigns the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) the responsibi1it.y of locating, constructing. operating, closing and decommissioning a nuclear waste repository. Prior to submittal of a licensee application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the DOE is required by 10 CFR part 60 to conduct a program of site characterization for the site to be described in such application. Site characterization includes an exploration and research program in the field and laboratory to determine the geologic conditions and ranges of those parameters which are necessary for determining the suitabi1it.y of the site as a geologic repository. The information thus collected should be able to establish with reasonable assurance that the public and environment will be adequately protected from the hazards associated with a repository at the site. This paper demonstrates by example a geostatistical approach which, on the basis of the existing limited data base, can be used to evaluate (1) whether existing information on a certain parameter is adequate to be considered representative. (2) if additional information is required, where should the additional sampling or testing be performed, and (3) whether the new1.y acquired data along with the existing information constitute representative data.

The next ten to fifteen years will be exciting ones for the construction industry because three city agencies alone have started or will start, on tremendous expansion programs, the cost of which will exceed a total of four billion dollars. The major portion of this work will be done by the use of tunnelling methods. *Tunnelling is construction by any method of a covered cavity of predesigned geometry whose final location and use under the surface, whose cross-sectional area is greater than two sq. meters. The New York City Transit Authority's expansion program will provide for approximately 52 miles of new subways. The Board of Water Supply has already started on City Tunnel No. 3 which, when completed will provide the City with enough water until the year 2000, and the Board of Water Resources has embarked on a tremendous program to clean up the surrounding waters. Yes, these will be exciting years, particularly when one reads about the new novel exotic methods of rock breaking and disintegration, coupled with the new methods of soft ground tunnelling.

When tunneling through karstic terrain, diverse and complex karst structures are to be expected. By means of drilling ahead of the face using drill jumbos, these structures can be detected to such a degree that by applying proper support measures both open karst cavities and karst holes surrounded by boulders embedded in soft rock can be mastered without causing any break-outs. Support measures such as spiles ahead of excavation, sealing off cavities, back?lling with sand, etc. have to be planned schematically and adapted to the dimensions and formations of the karst structures on site. An essential requirement for a smooth excavation procedure is the availablility of all necessary tunneling equipment for excavation by drill and blast as well as for excavation of soil, with experienced tunnel engineers being in charge of any adaptions on site.

The Bureau of Mines is examining mineral deposits bearing strategic elements such as cobalt, for which the United States heavily relies on imports. The Turner-Albright volcanogenic sulfide deposit in southwestern Oregon is marginally economic based on its gold content and associated silver, copper, zinc, and cobalt values. Bureau research on the Turner-Albright deposit was performed (1) to evaluate domestic cobalt recovery as a byproduct of gold production from massive sulfide ores; (2) to develop an analogue of modern sea-floor polymetallic deposits to determine the economic potential of the deep-sea resources; and (3) to compile information on the geochemistry and genesis of the deposit that can aid in future onshore exploration. Cold was introduced as near micrometer-sized disseminations by exhalative hydrothermal fluids near sea-floor vent sites and by late influxes of mineralizing fluids into lower zones of brecciated sulfides and basaltic fragments. Cobalt is a substitutional element in pyrite that occurs in outlying halos around original vent sites. Mineralogic studies conducted with a scanning-electron microscope and an electron microprobe determined that none of the ore minerals are amenable to traditional beneficiation methods such as gravity and flotation. An experimental oxygen pressure-leaching procedure developed by the Bureau has proven successful in treating such complex ores.

Not only is for a short term need of the company during their operation but also for the national public opinion on the presence of the mining industry to a certain region. Nanggung region which is only a 2-hour drive from Jakarta, brings the challenges to Antam’s gold mine business in the areas such as illegal miner presence, easy access to the mine area as it is very close to the community, and national political sensitivity considering its proximity to Jakarta. The company allocates about 3%of its total operational cost annually for Community Development pro-gram. The program is derived through SWOT analysis and broad involvement of all community components to assure that the allocated fund is addressed to the right place. In the year of 2002, the company has successfully established a conducive-relation with the community.

Alumina hydroxides such as gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and boehmite (AlOOH) are precursors of many types of alumina that find important industrial applications. The thermal decomposition of AlOOH, which is a more energy saving precursor compared to gibbsite, gives rise to the formation of ?-, d-, ?- and a-aluminas that are used for the production of catalysts. The applications of the aluminas are governed by their properties that are a function of the precursor material and its microstructure. The microstructure in turn is a factor of the method and conditions applied, as well as, in the case of soft chemical processes, on the anions present. Towards these ends, this study was focused on the effect of different anions on the physicochemical characteristics of the alumina hydroxides precipitated in the first 5 minutes after the perturbation of the stability of a supersaturated sodium aluminate solution (Bayer liquor).

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

Several small mines are producing refractory gold concentrates in Zimbabwe and, owing to the small scale of most of these operations, their output is processed in a central custom roaster in Kwekwe. Owing to the wide variations in the feed to the roaster, the efficiency of the old Edwards roaster is deemed unsatisfactory with gold recovery from concentrate as low as 70%, and alternative processes were evaluated to improve this situation. Various processes for oxidizing refractory arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates to liberate gold prior to cyanidation are known. In practice, only two have to date met with wide industrial acceptance, pressure oxidation and roasting. Owing to the ·high arsenic and antimony levels of some concentrates in Zimbabwe, the only viable roasting alternative would be two-stage air-roasting of concentrates in two reactors, as practiced at Giant Yellowknife, Campbell Red Lake and New Consort. This process, however, creates an arsenic disposal problem, and produces gas of fairly low SO2 content, requiring a large gas handling system for acid production. On the other hand, there are currently four commercial pressure oxidation plants treating refractory gold ores (McLaughlin, Mercur, Getchell and Goldstrike) and three treating concentrates (Sao Bento, Porgera, Campbell). One other concentrate oxidation plant is being constructed (Con), and several more are being considered.

After 30 years of success, Newmont Gold Company has temporarily ceased production from the original Carlin Pit. In late 1993, the Carlin East Decline was driven and an extensive underground exploration program was started. Today, Newmont Gold produces refractory ore from the Carlin East underground at the rate of 700 t/d (770 stpd) for an annual production of over 100,000 ounces. Over 70 underground miners enjoy the estimated 6-year mine life at Carlin East. About 70% of the ore at Carlin East is mined by mechanized longhole stoping with delayed cemented backfill. The remaining ore is mined by underhand drift and cemented fill methods.
