Carbon attrition losses are not usually a prime consideration for CIP equipment selection and CIP plant design. However, the costs as a result of carbon attrition and associated gold lost with carbon can be high. Recorded carbon losses for Newcrest operating gold plants were shown to vary widely from plant to plant. The Tuckabiana plant recorded an overall loss of only 0.3g carbon /t ore which is very low by industry standards. A comparative carbon management study was undertaken by Newcrest to highlight the reasons for the excellent record of Tuckabiana operation compared to other Newcrest plants. This paper discusses the results of the comparative study and high­lights areas of concern with respect to carbon attrition.

The paper contains the results of the physical and mathematical simulations (based on the finite elements simulation) of the length and shape influence on the mechanical strength of the brex. Key words: Stiff extrusion, extruded briquettes, BREX, mechanical strength, cold strength, compressive strength, tensile splitting strength, oval shape, finite elements simulation. INTRODUCTION Extruded briquettes (BREX) exhibit a set of unique properties when compared with briquettes formed by alternative methods. Brex generally have sufficient integrity right after extrusion to withstand the necessary handling and stockpiling and does not require any special means and tools for the green briquettes strength conservation. In a typical die without an ancillary cutting device green brex tend to have very high length to diameter (L/D) or length to section area ratios. For round hole dies the brex are typically 5to 6 times the diameters and even longer. Stiff-extrusion allows also for the very easy changing of the forming dies. Dies with different cross-sectional shapes of the brex (round, ovals, square, hollow structures and many other two dimensional shapes) are possible, and common. The results of our investigations show how these geometrical shape factors contribute to overall quality of the brex both in terms of strength and as new charge components in metallurgical furnaces and processes [2-4]

Ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines can lead to significant consequences, including loss of life, injuries, damaged equipment, and production stoppage. Improving the safety of the workplace is of utmost importance for mine workers and the U.S. economy. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident/injury/illness dataset provides short narratives for reported incidents, including ground-falls. The main objective of this study is to develop a framework that includes: 1) utilizing machine learning algorithms to categorize ground-fall incidents from narratives based on the main cause of the occurrence and 2) demonstrating an example of a user-friendly visualization to display injury/fatality trends from narratives in U.S. coal mines between 1983 and 2021. The developed framework was tested on a subset of the data and achieved an average F1-score of 96% in categorizing the incidents. The outcome will help identify areas requiring additional research and innovative solutions to reduce severe occupational hazards.

The human requirements have increased rapidly depending on population density and urbanization thus industrialization has grown steadily. As a result of the situation, the greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and the global warming have increased slowly. Today this effect has continued to increase. Therefore, the effects of greenhouse gases in all areas of production must be controlled. The study presents the methods of determination the CO2 emissions (CO2-e) and energy consumption in aggregate production. The aggregate constitute approximately 70% by volume of concrete that has widespread use as construction material in the world. One of the most important elements in today's terms is sustainable use of resources and minimum CO2 emissions (CO2 + CO + NOx + CH4.vb.) at every stage of production of aggregate. Therefore, these elements must be taken into consideration in the aggregate production standards. The choice of production method of aggregate is very important for optimum use of energy and effects of greenhouse gas emissions. So the properties of the aggregate material must be known well to obtain the target. Within the scope of this study, the unit value of CO2-e that release when the production of aggregate in different formations is determined for our country. Thus, the effects of green house gas emission can be evaluated according to the characteristics of material in aggregate production planning. In this study, energies consumed during the production of aggregates at a quarry in Istanbul Cendere region were investigated by taking the different formations encountered at the quarry into consideration. The unit CO2 emission values per ton of produced aggregates were calculated as a result of this investigation. Besides, energy consumption values of previous months at this quarry were taken and the unit CO2 emission values were also calculated.

The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

This paper describes a new development in the cyanidation of gold ores, which we expect will result in a major improvement in the way many gold ores are treated. The process has evolved through work at Hazen Research, Inc. for Kamyr, Inc. and in brief, the consists of utilizing oxygen rather than air in the carbon-in-1 each (CIL) process. We refer to this improved process for all ores amenable to cyanide leaching as carbon-in-1each with oxygen or CILO.

M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

The increased impact of mining subsidence in the U.S. coalfields and the recent regulatory constraints legislated by government and state agencies have provoked an intense research effort on this topic by government agencies, coal companies and academic institutions. Subsidence and horizontal strain predictions are a basic requirement if subsidence and its associated effects are to be controlled and contained within acceptable environmental levels. As a result, several such prediction techniques have been proposed or are currently under development to assist coal operators in minimizing the detrimental effects of these surface deformations. VPI&SU has been actively involved in this research effort in the past few years, with particular emphasis on the Appalachian coalfield. During the initial stages of this research a large number of subsidence case studies were collected from the literature, the coal industry and government agencies. In total, data from 32 longwall panels and 60 room and pillar panels were collected. This data bank was used to determine relationships between the basic mining and subsidence parameters, in order to allow the evaluation of the various prediction methods for the Appalachian coal region. Based on this data two subsidence prediction techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions have been developed. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. The limitations of the data of the collected case studies, i.e. accuracy of surveys, frequency of monitoring, lack of horizontal movement measurements, etc, led VPI&SU to the initiation of a detailed subsidence and strain monitoring program above a number of active mines, located in three major coal producing counties of Virginia. The aim of this program was to enhance the data base with accurate and complete measurements of surface movements and to allow, therefore, the refinement of the prediction techniques. This paper presents this monitoring program, discusses in detail the results obtained from three specific case studies and provides recommendations for the implementation of the field data in the general prediction methods.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

Geological remote sensing is, "....the study of the Earth utilizing electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) which is either reflected or emitted from the land surface in wavelengths ranging from ultra-violet (0.3 micrometre) to microwave (3 metre)."1 Selected examples which illustrate a variety of successful geologic applications include lithologic mapping, 2 engineering soils mapping,3 tectonic interpretation,4 and mineral and petroleum exploration.5 This report examines the applicability of remote sensing for bauxite exploration in northeastern Mississippi. Specific objectives were to map lithologies of northeastern Mississippi from LANDSAT imagery, to determine the utility of LANDSAT imagery for delineating and mapping known deposits of bauxite, and to discover and map new bauxite deposits.

As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

Escanaba, Michigan, is located on the South¬ern shore of the Upper Peninsula on a sheltered area of Lake Michigan called Little Bay de Noquet. The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company has operated a rail-to-ship ore transfer facility at this location for well over 100-years. It is the only terminal of its type on Take Michigan and thus can offer a longer navigation season to lower lake markets than other upper lake ports. It all started in 1864 when the Peninsula Railroad of Michigan, now a part of the C&NW, completed a 100 km rail line from Little Bay de Noquet to the Jackson Mines at Negnauee, Michigan. During that first year of operation approximately 31 000t of ore were loaded onto ships at Escanaba from what was then called the Merchants Dock. By 1871 demand had already exceeded capacity and it was necessary to build a larger dock, which in turn was replaced with a still larger pocket dock in 1903. There are no plans or records available to indicate how the ore was handled from rail to ship prior to the construction of the pocket dock.

INTRODUCTION Effective mine ventilation is required to maintain a healthy underground environment for humans. Without effective ventilation, the environment can become unhealthy or hazardous as a result of the depletion of oxygen, contamination with toxic gases, or the buildup of an excessive amount of particulate matter (dust). Each contaminant has an upper limit of concentration that should not be exceeded within an 8-hr period. This is known as the threshold limit value (TLV). The TLV represents an acceptable level of exposure that should produce no ill effects. Unfortunately, more than one contaminant may be present at any one time and the effects of the individual contaminants may be additive, i.e., the effects of each contaminant must be considered simultaneously to determine the potential danger to miners. Possibly the greatest threat to mine-air quality is the uncontrolled underground use of the diesel engine. The diesel engine was invented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel. His intention was to develop a power source that could burn coal dust as a fuel, but he was unsuccessful in that attempt and had to resort to liquid petroleum fuels (Johnson, 1975). In 1898, the diesel engine was intro¬duced into the United States by Adolphus Busch, who anticipated using it as a prime mover in factories and generating plants. At that time, the diesel engine was a very large and very heavy engine, designed for fixed installations. By 1919, lighter engines were being developed, and by 1931, Caterpillar was marketing a diesel-powered, track-type tractor (Henderson, 1975). Since 1931, the diesel engine has evolved into an extremely popular prime mover in medium and heavy-duty applications. Efficiencies now are on the order of 40% and improvements such as turbocharging and aftercooling have produced engines capable of generating power at a ratio of 0.3 kW/kg (1.0 hp per 5.0 lb) of engine weight. Although the diesel engine is relatively efficient as a mobile power plant, it is far from efficient in terms of the energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. About 60% of the heat value of the fuel leaves the engine as wasted heat, with about 50% of that heat being emitted through the exhaust pipe and the other 50% being emitted through the radiator or cooling fins. Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor (H_0), carbon dioxide (CO_), and nitro¬gen (N2) as the byproducts. Since the diesel is not a perfect engine, each pound of fuel burned generates 5.6 m° (200 cu ft) of exhaust gas, containing about 0.009 m3 (0.33 cu ft) of carbon monoxide (CO), 0.009 m' (0.33 cu ft) of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, and NOD), and 0.57 m3 (20 cu ft) of carbon dioxide. The balance of the exhaust emission consists of free nitrogen and water vapor (Hurn, 1975). Contrary to popular belief, the diesel is not inherently dirty. Under normal operating conditions, a well-maintained engine neither smokes nor smells. However, the same well-maintained engine can and does produce toxic emissions. A diesel engine is not inherently safe and constitutes a distinct hazard to personnel. This chapter is devoted to a description of the various toxic substances that may be generated by a diesel engine. Although some of these substances may also be produced by blasting or natural causes, the focus of this chapter is on the relationship between the internal- combustion compression-ignition engine (the diesel) and the quality of the mine air. CARBON MONOXIDE Combustion Process During the combustion process (burning) of organic fuels, each atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen, provided that a surplus of oxygen atoms is available. Thus, the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Most open flames, such as trash fires, camp fires, gas ranges, etc., produce carbon dioxide. However, with insufficient oxygen, incomplete combustion results as the carbon atoms each combine with one atom of oxygen to produce toxic carbon monoxide. Burning charcoal briquettes produce carbon monoxide because the combustion takes place inside the briquettes where sufficient oxygen is not available to the combustion process. Internal-combustion engines, whether burning gasoline or diesel fuel, also produce carbon monoxide. The only oxygen available to the combustion process is that trapped within the cylinder. If the amount of fuel delivered to the cylinder is excessive, there is insufficient oxygen for complete combustion and carbon monoxide production results. In a normally aspirated (nonturbocharged) diesel engine, the amount of air "sucked" into a cylinder is the same on every intake stroke, resulting in complete combustion only at low levels of engine loading, when small amounts of fuel are injected. Higher levels of engine loading cause larger amounts of fuel to be injected into the same volume of air in the cylinder. Unless the volume of air is increased, the combustion process becomes progressively less complete as the amount of fuel increases. Turbocharged engines are able to compensate some¬what for increased loading and increased fuel consumption. The turbocharger acts as a compressor for the intake air, forcing a larger volume of air into the cylinders as the engine speed increases. Hence the turbocharged engine burns cleaner than a naturally aspirated engine and produces slightly less carbon monoxide (Marshall and Fleming, 1971). Much of the underground equipment used today is powered by turbocharged indirect-injection diesel engines. Although these engines emit fewer toxic contaminants than naturally aspirated engines, they do not eliminate the problem. Since the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gases, rapid accelerations can cause temporary overfueling of the engine until the turbocharger attains a speed sufficient to restore the correct air-to-fuel ratio. During this "turbocharger lag," the combustion cylinders contain insufficient oxygen, causing severe smoking and an increased output of carbon monoxide.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Gold extractions from three refractory sulphide concentrates have been increased by bacterial oxidation with T. ferrooxidans prior to cyanide leaching. Arsenopyrite, pyrite and stibnite were the major sulphide components associated with gold in the concentrates examined. Kinetic oxidation tests were conducted for each concentrate by monitoring iron and arsenic levels in leach slurry. A correlation has been established between the level of bacterial oxidation and gold extraction from cyanide leaching of oxidised residues. High levels of bacterial oxidation have been achieved in approximately 8 days at pulp densities of 20-25/ w/v solids, resulting in 70-90% gold extraction.

The bromine review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. Bromine production in the United States during 1992 amounted to 171 kt (376 million lbs), a 453-t (I-million lb) increase from 1991. Data compiled by the US Bureau of Mines indicates this increase was due mainly to greater exports of elemental bromine and bromine derivatives (flame retardants). Exports increased despite the economic slowdown in Europe and Japan. The United States remains the world's largest bromine producer, with about 42% of the total. Israel is ranked second, followed by the United Kingdom, the former Soviet Union and Japan.

Aeration curing, over- a long duration in wet- red stockpiles, shows promise as an affordable pretreatment method for oxidizing gold encapsulating sulfide minerals, and possibly organic matter, in low grade refractory ores. Following aeration pretreatment, the ore is reclaimed, neutralized, and cyanide leached by conventional practices. Large tonnages of subeconomic material, including mine stripping waste, may he converted into ore by this new technology. The results presented show that a successful application of this technology will likely require crushing to about -2 cm (-3/4 in.), followed by aeration in a wet stockpile for long periods, up m three years. Natural convection may he inadequate, hut forced air ventilation, at modest pressures and power consumption, is affordable.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Chemical Composition and Physical Properties It is generally accepted that portland cement clinker consists of a mixture of compounds or synthetic minerals. The four principal compounds are:
