The Electroslurry TM electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes: The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, Electroslurry TM electrowinning and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

Evver since it first displayed an autonomous mining truck at the 1996 MinExpo show in Las Vegas, NV, Caterpillar has been building the blocks to a fully autonomous mine. In May, the company unveiled another block in that progression, the new Cat MineStar System that it says is ?the industry?s broadest, most comprehensively integrated miner operations and mobile equipment management system.? The full system is comprised of five capability sets ? Fleet, Terrain, Detect, Health and Command ? to help operators define the size and scope of their management system based on the needs of their mining operations. Michael Murphy, technology and autonomy manager for Cat Global Mining, explained that the customers were not ready for an autonomous mining truck in 1996, but that many customers wanted the building blocks to eventually get to autonomous mining. After 15 years of work, Murphy said the building blocks have come together in the form of the Cat MineStar System.

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? "INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The operational safety of long and very long rail tunnels represents a key issue in all development stages, including design, construction, commissioning and operation. The spectrum of potential threats is very broad and challenging. These issues can only be mastered by means of a proper combination of a number of safety measures at various levels. This paper focuses on the specific safety issues and the extremely challenging conditions characterizing very long and deep tunnels. They include a significantly increased risk during operation that the incident train cannot exit the tunnel by its own means, long self-rescue and rescue distances, the presence of a number of trains, possibly mixed traffic as well as significant thermal issues. Amberg Engineering is strongly involved in the design and construction of most long and very long rail tunnels in Europe, including in particular the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel (LTF) and the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). The combined experience arising from these tunnels forms an invaluable body of expertise, which is summarized in this paper. The focus is on shared issues with practical relevant examples and project-specific solutions. Special attention will be devoted to the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be operational by mid-2016 and will be the longest infrastructure tunnel worldwide. VERY LONG TUNNELS IN EUROPE Overview From the point of view of safety, tunnels in excess of about 20 km exhibit a significantly increased risk that incident trains could stop within the tunnel. This is related to the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) on rolling stock, to be discussed in the chapter on rescue stations. This paper will specifically focus on the following longest tunnels in construction or operation, listed in Table 1."

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. Derjaguin and Dukhin [1] were the first to develop a first-principle flotation model by considering the role of surface forces in bubble-particle interactions. According to the model, the ζ-potentials of particles constitute the energy barriers, E12, for particle (1)-bubble (2) interactions, which corroborates well with the observation that flotation recoveries reach maxima under conditions of zero-zeta potentials. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements were conducted for the quartz-dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH) flotation system, for which detailed studies had been conducted by D.W. Fuerstenau [2], including the measurements of zeta-potentials, contact angles and collector adsorption as a function of pH.

The aim of this study is to compare amino acids and organic acids in the extraction of gold from silicate ore. Amino acids were found to have higher efficiency of gold extraction than organic acids at the same acid concentration, which is likely due to amino acids having both carboxylic and amine groups in their structure, while organic acids only have carboxylic groups. Five amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and seven organic acids (citric, malic, tataric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acids) were selected to investigate gold extraction efficiency. Aspartic acid was found to have greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid. The optimal gold to aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6, and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35 to 42 percent of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. Further studies are needed to increase gold leaching and reduce incubation time. The results imply that aspartic acid can be used as an alternative reagent to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore. This method is nontoxic to humans, is environmentally friendly and can have real applications.

The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

Capstone Copper’s Pinto Valley Mine faced challenges in recovering rock and ore on final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall stability. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The engineering team from Capstone and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. This paper presents how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

It is doubtful if anyone knows precisely how many U.S. coal miners have been killed by roof falls. In 1931, 51 miners were killed by falls or rock in every 10-day period (Paul, 1). Roley (2) indicated that from 1882 to 1945, over 3,700 men were killed by roof falls in Illinois alone. During this 63-year period, roof falls accounted for 47.6 percent of the coal mine accident fatalities. Similarly, Price and Nolting (3) reported that during the 10-year period beginning in 1937, roof falls claimed over 50 percent of the lives lost in West Virginia coal mines. Over 150 miners died under fallen rock in West Virginia alone, in each of those years. Certainly, the statistics have improved over the years. The Theodore Barry Report of 1971 (4) indicated that during, the previous 4 years, fewer than 100 miners per year lost their lives to roof falls--in the entire United States. The improvement is less remarkable when it is realized that the accident rate has declined only as the number of miners employed underground has declined. The TRW Report (4) pointed out that although the number of fatalities in underground coal mining (from all causes) had been cut in half from 1956 to 1965, the fatality rate per thousand miners had remained virtually constant. The decreased accident rate was due not to a reduction in hazards but to a reduction in work force. Roof falls still claim approximately 50 percent of the lives lost in underground coal mines. Considering the increased underground production of coal which must result from our energy crisis, the environmentalists' pressure against strip mining, and our inevitably diminishing supply of strippable coal, it is apparent that some means must be found to reduce the number of lives claimed by coal mine roof falls.

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.

"In oil fields that have been depleted with conventional surface oil wells but still contain significant reserves, an extraction alternative that has been constructed recently consists of a drilling gallery below the oil-bearing formation at the bottom of a 1,200-ft deep shaft where upward sloping wells are being drilled to allow oil collection by gravity. The gallery is 92-ft diameter with a flat ceiling supported by rock bolts and shotcrete structurally connected to the shaft liner, which doubles as a large tension support element. A special excavation sequence was implemented for the gallery to maximize arching in the stress above the large diameter gallery. The gallery was located in competent sandstone, constructed with sequential excavation methods, and designed with a 3D finite element model. Special consideration was given to optimizing the gallery location to take advantage of the geology for construction and support while giving good positioning to the well drilling equipment. BACKGROUND Brierley Associates was contracted to provide both design and construction management services for an approximately 1,165-ft deep, 18-ft excavated diameter vertical shaft that opens to a 92-ft diameter flat roof gallery. The geotechnical data for the site was based on information available from literature and from data obtained during core drilling and from in-situ testing in a 1250-ft deep borehole. Wire line coring was conducted using a HQ, 10-ft long core barrel with a mud-rotary drilling method through sedimentary bedrock. The geometry of the shaft and the bottom gallery is shown in Figure 1(a). GEOLOGIC SETTING AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY The stratigraphy at the site includes a series of interbedded marine limestone, shale, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, and chert units. Limestone and shale are the predominant lithologies in the upper approximately 675 ft, while the lower portion contains five distinct sandstone units and more abundant shale, claystone, siltstone, and coal than the upper zone. A cherty sandstone at a depth of 1,130 below ground surface (bgs) was encountered. At a depth of about 1,000 ft to 1,116 ft bgs, a non-marine sandstone unit was encountered. This sandstone is the hydrocarbon bearing layer. Joints and fractures observed in the limestone had dips ranging from 0 to 90 deg. from horizontal with joint and fracture surfaces that ranged from planar to irregular and smooth to rough. Several, near vertical shear planes with slickensides were observed with surfaces that were generally smooth and planar. RQD values for the limestone ranged from 0 to 100 percent but in general were good to excellent."

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

Leaching studies of magnesite obtained from Tamilnadu Magnesite Limited, Salem, have been carried out using hydrochloric acid leaching and percentage of magnesium chloride recovered was estimated. The variables considered in this study were the following: duration of leaching, volume percentage of hydrochloric acid, temperature, and pulp density. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride increased with duration of the leaching, volume % of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and temperature. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride decreased with increase of pulp density. The optimum conditions found to be pulp density (10%), hydrochloric acid concentration (30%), duration of leaching (2 h), and temperature (348.15 K). Iron was removed by treating the leach liquor with hydrogen peroxide and by raising the pH to 3.5–4. The purified leach liquor was subjected to spray drying for producing high pure magnesium chloride.

The problem of the freezing of moist raw materials, such as concentrates, in railroad cars during winter shipment has been a continuing source of both economic and operational trouble to the industry and to the railroad companies. The difficulties center around the discharging of frozen cargoes into the plant materials handling system. Because of cargo freezing, appreciable delays in car-dumping schedules occur each winter and cause additional expense for demurrage charges and for slowdown of plant operations. In one plant during one winter, a car dumper rated at 40 cars per day could dump only 3 cars per day in bad weather. Delays became so serious one winter, that 500 cars held in the yard became so badly frozen, that they were sent to the southern part of the United States to thaw after they accumulated an average of two months demurrage charges. These delays in car unloading become critical if unit or integral train concept is applied to the movement of raw materials. Anticipated savings in transportation costs through better equipment utilization are largely based on rapid loading and unloading cycles of whole trainloads. If freezing problems cannot be adequately solved, unit train operations cannot be operated to achieve the potentially large reductions in transportation costs. The freezing problem may tend to become even greater in the years ahead, because the unit train concept will allow the trains to run faster and consequently the heat loss will be accelerated due to the larger heat transfer coefficient. A compensating factor, however, will be the shorter travel time. Further, the sources of raw materials being mined are located farther north than before and the ambient temperatures during transit are going to be lower.
