Metalliferous sediments and/or saline brines have now been discovered in numerous sea floor deeps along 900 km of the axial rift zone of the Red Sea (Fig. 1). The Atlantis II Deep remains the most interesting of the the brine deeps both in terms of intensity of submarine hydrothermal processes and in terms of potential economic importance. In fact, successful completion of a pre-pilot mining test in 1979 indicates that the Atlantis II Deep may become the first deep sea base metal sulfide mine (Mustafa and Amann, 1980). Under the most optimistic scenario, the Atlantis II Mine might be established 4-6 years after completion of a year long pilot mining test in 1983-84. If established, mining would produce about 100,000 tons per day of wet mud with about 200 tons per day contained zinc, and proportional amounts of Cu and Ag. Expected mine life would be about 15-20 years (Anon., 1981). In addition to direct economic importance, the Red Sea brines and metalliferous deposits provide significant insight into exploration for sea floor brine-related ore deposits and for analogous ancient deposits. In this paper I will concentrate on the economic potential of Red Sea deposits and sea floor exploration for brine related deposits, but some ramifications of relevance to ancient deposits are extant.

The situation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, or Cominco, may be somewhat unique in that the Company is not only a manufacturer of ammonium nitrate, but as a mining company is a major user of its own product. This situation has resulted in highly successful application of ammonium nitrate-oil explosives. Several noteworthy techniques have been developed and others have been improved. Use of this material in the mining industry has led ammonium nitrate producers to adopt the term nitro-carbo-nitrate or INN for ammonium nitrate-oil blends. A small blending plant at Cominco's largest mining property, the Sullivan Mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is producing more than 80% of all the explosive used at the Sullivan, and is supplying two other Cominco mines. Application has required intensive research to determine the best forms of ammonium nitrate for use in small holes drilled for development and long-hole stoping. It has led not only to experiments to determine the best blending oil, but also to development of loading techniques to the point where NCN is being moved through loading tubes over 700 feet. It has required research into mining practices such as hole arrangement and blasting of development cuts. It has resulted in the development of a special product for secondary breaking. All this has been accompanied by the recognition of the importance of insuring safe practices at every stage.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolters' hazard exposure. A "micro-analysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries and a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. The re-search emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment design problems that lead to human error accidents.

NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. The Trolleyphone was the first successful application of carrier current techniques to a DC power distribution system to provide voice communication between fixed points and moving locomotives and traveling cranes, This was a significant breakthrough because this not only in itself provided a useful new tool for industry, but the knowledge gained in the transmission of voice communication is paving the way for many other things, chiefly, remote control and indication systems which promise to have a far reaching effect during the upcoming age of automation. Once it has been established that we can communicate between men who operate machines, the next step will be to operate the machines themselves.

"In July 2012 construction started on the Grosvenor project, a five million tonne per annum underground longwall mine planned for Moranbah in Central Queensland. Grosvenor is located immediately to the south of the existing Moranbah North mine which has been in operation since 1998. EPBM technology is being used for the first time in Australia for excavation of a coal drift. The TBM was used to build two drifts on the project, one for the coal conveyor which will transport to surface, and another for people and equipment to access the underground once the mine’s operational (as shown in figure 1). The TBM will pass beneath a steel archway roof that has been installed at the drift’s entrance and begin drilling into the ground to build the seven metre diameter tunnel, descending at an angle of one in eight until it reaches the depth of the coal seam approximately 160 metres below.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The first TBM used in a coal mine was in 1962, a Wohlmyer, in Westerholt, Germany. A further 75 km of tunnels were excavated in coalmines within Germany between 1971 to 1983. This paper will review the Grosvenor Mine project (Grosvenor) owned by Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (Met Coal) includes the construction of a new underground coal mine and surface facilities on the northern boundary of the town of Moranbah in the Central Queensland Bowen Basin coal precinct. The contract to undertake the underground development works was awarded to Redpath in 2012. The scope of the Grosvenor Project was to construct temporary office and workshop facilities, install 2 portal arches, backfill boxcuts and infrastructure, excavate by EPBM method 967 m of 1:6 gradient Conveyor Drift and 1,258 m of 1:8 gradient Transport Drift, development of 2,520 m of pit bottom area roadways and development of 10,550 m of the first longwall tailgate. A mining machine has been designed and fabricated to mine coal from room and pillar operations combining high pressure waterjet cutting and mechanical fragmentation. Waterjets are used to slot the coal face with an advancing plow wedge then breaking out larger coal pieces. The machine has the following advantages: - simply built around a disassembled longwall chock and gathering arm loader apron; - few moving parts which are simply and inexpensively maintained; provides immediate roof support in the face working area; - coal produced is larger, with resulting lower preparation cost; - no dust is generated; - risk of spark generation is virtually eliminated.

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted byproducts generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining, (2) dyke construction schedule, (3) size, shape and location of tailing cells and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailing-cell designs, decreasing the mining-cell volume and increasing the number of mining cells improves the net present value (NPV) of the operation due to increased operational flexibility.

Increases in the price of gold starting about five years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have caused a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United states except for a flurry of activity in Nevada occasioned by the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last five years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagueries of gold deposits. The present writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. Wm. Spence at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the united states. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corporation and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

Electroplating is a widely utilized but little understood process. The fact that the average person is in contact with dozens of plated items daily without even being aware that they are electroplated is evidence of the success of the process. Although a complete explanation of electrodeposition involves thermodynamics and modern theories of bonding and catalytic reactions, in its simplest form the process conforms to the following description. A metal salt dissolved in water partially dissociates into negatively charged and positively charged ions. In the case of nickel sulfate dissolved in water, for example, a portion of the salt dissociates into positively charged nickel ions and negatively charged sulfate ions. If an electrical potential is applied between two electrodes in this solution, the nickel ions migrate toward the cathode and the sulfate ions toward the anode. The negatively charged cathode has a high concentration of electrons, which combine with the positively charged metal ions to form neutral metal atoms with a stable electron configuration. These insoluble atoms thus form a deposit on the cathode.

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity to drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensuring the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures — such as road surface pavements, concrete slabs and transverse joints — vehicle dynamics, comfort level and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed, along with an application case.

The Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) is principal element of the planned second phase of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s (TJPA) Transbay Program. When complete, this regionally critical project will connect Caltrain’s regional rail system and the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s statewide system to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco via a 1.3-mile tunnel. Studied since the 1970s, the DTX has now received environmental clearance, and key stakeholders are aligned on the project’s configuration and its expedited delivery. This paper describes efforts to optimize the DTX configuration and develop an informed project delivery strategy that incorporates construction industry feedback on project phasing, contract packaging, and procurement methods that accomplish the project’s budget goals.

When paraffinic gases (ethane, propane, butane) are used as the gas phase in flotation systems, the initial rate of flotation and recovery are generally increased as compared with air. The mechanism of the effect of paraffinic gases in flotation was studied and it was shown that they co-adsorb with the collector ions on the mineral-aqueous solution interface. The effect of this co-adsorption was interpreted in terms of apparent increase of the effective chain length of the collector by the co-adsorbed gas. Adsorption densities, contact angles and flotation behaviour were studied on the following systems: a) Quartz - dodecyl ammonium chloride - ethane and propane b) Calcite - sodium oleate - propane and butane. The positive effect of the co-adsorbed gases is a maximum at low collector concentrations or where critical conditions for flotation with air prevail.

The Falconbridge Dominicana laboratory receives samples from all parts of the operation. Ore, metal and oil samples are taken by operating departments, gas and water samples by the laboratory staff. Physical sample preparation is essentially standard and produces comminuted samples for wet-chemical analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). T he main operating sections of the laboratory are described indicating in each case the type of instrumentation and method used, sample types analysed and comments on problems experienced. Emphasis is given to the sample preparation and X-ray sections especially with regard to the difficulties caused by our heterogenous ore material, calibration of the instrument and operational malfunctions. General problems related to our remote location and the tropical climate are discussed. Limited statistics on instrument availability, and stability, accuracy, precision, etc., are given.

"Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But, is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this article will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers.Engineers are different. There, it has been said. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot of individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for.Clash of culturesWhat distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain. Standards are maintained both through peer review and in academia, through ABET accreditation and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth.Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9):• Expertise — prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge.• Autonomy — the freedom to choose the means to solve a problem.• Commitment — primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty.• Identification — identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization.• Ethics — providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client.• Standards — committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals."

When I was originally asked to give this talk, I had certain preconceived ideas of the mining industry's reaction to Operations Research. It seemed at the time to be a rather simple task to collect these ideas for presentation here today. Jotting down these notions, I became concerned that overexposure to this activity called OR perhaps had clouded my outlook on what was actually being done on a nation-wide scale. I felt, to have a better cross section, a questionnaire of current industrial activity was in order. I solicited the response of some 75 mining companies varying in sizes and operating characteristics, and I am pleased to report that the response was good. I received answers from 51. The questionnaire was intended to measure the degree to which their concerns were actually engaged in OR efforts. With all due respect to the people who were so gracious as to answer the questionnaire, I feel that there is a tremendous misconception as to the designed purpose of OR. This is not to imply that there are no active OR groups in the mining industry. But by in large, the majority of the companies sampled appear to be somewhat confused as to what OR really is.

Silica flotation with amine salts has been a commercial process for years in certain non-sulfide mineral systems. Phosphate rock and feldspar deposits are notable examples. Generally, the quartz is clean and coarse. Primary amines and imidazolines are used, usually in a mole weight range 250-300, ad often fairly impure grades of collectors are satisfactory. As the production of magnetic iron concentrates grew in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and in foreign locations, the iron mining companies began to explore amine flotation of silica to improve these concentrates. Many of the mining companies, as well as reagent suppliers, government laboratories and university research teams, had already studied amine collectors for silica, but the application to magnetic iron concentrates presented a real commercial opportunity to apply the art. Amine flotation of silica has been accomplished by simple addition of a flotation cell, and possibly a regrind mill, at the end of the magnetic concentration process. The flotation system gave the mill operator a flexible method to control final grade caused by ore variations in the feed. It increased iron content with lower silica, which resulted in lower freight costs per unit Fe and better pellets for blast furnace use.

Size reduction models of cone and impact crushers have been developed using Whiten's generic computational structure for the description of crushers. They incorporate a laboratory single particle breakage test and the t-family of curves to describe the breakage behaviour of the feed ore. A quantitative model of 7-foot cone crushers has been developed, based on surveys of Svedala (Kobe) and Nordberg machines. Survey data on a Canica vertical shaft impact machine have been used to validate the impact crusher model. Given the crusher operating conditions, such as tonnage, feed size, set and liner condition, or rotor speed and radius, plus breakage information on the feed, the models provide good predictions of product size distribution, and appear to be robust over a wide range of conditions. They are incorporated in commercially available computer simulation packages.

This paper discusses the basic requirements covering the area between the initial discovery of a deposit and a decision as to whether or not the deposit will support an economically sound mining venture. The procedure for gaining the necessary information and the sequence of steps is in .some respects parallel to gaining like information on deposits other than the sand type. For the sake of simplicity the stages and sequence are presented as follow: first, the initial reconnaissance drilling; second, the exploration drilling to permit initial ore body estimates; third, metallurgical testing; fourth, the estimate of plant and operating costs; and last, the economic balance. The objective of the reconnaissance drilling is to collect sufficient information to reach a decision as to the advisability of further exploration or the abandonment of the area. This initial phase will comprise, in addition to some drilling, a thorough reconnaissance of the area, a study of the best geological and topographic maps of the region, and a study of any literature available, all under the guidance of a geologist.
