Before 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. When considering expansion, it was decided that the existing process would not lend itself to a program geared toward processing the total output of copper precipitate and copper concentrate from KUCC mining and concentrating operations. During 1989 and 1990, several smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy) of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy). The smelter facility that used the Noranda technology was shut down in May 1995. The flash smelting furnace operation began in June with the flash converting furnace start-up a few weeks later.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at tem¬peratures as high as 1200 °C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Forma¬tion changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has recently completed design for the Bi-County Water Tunnel Project. The project will include a 10-foot diameter, 5.3-mile long hard rock tunnel located within the Piedmont Physiographic Province in Montgomery County, Maryland. The rock formations present along the alignment are comprised of igneous and metamorphic lithologies. This paper presents the steps taken to characterize the complex geology along the tunnel alignment into a single ?Engineering Unit? based upon the intact rock and rock mass properties. The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is planned to be used as the basis for dividing the ground into three ?Excavation and Support? classes. This RMR approach was selected to establish contractual baselines as presented in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) and is intended to facilitate management of the ground support characterization during construction.

The Price Road Drainage Tunnel was constructed for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in 1988 and 1989 to provide surface water drainage for the proposed outer Loop Highway (SR 117). The 5.4 km (3 mile) long, 6.6 m (22 ft) excavated diameter tunnel was driven through sand, gravel and cobbles utilizing an open face digger shield. Precast concrete segments were erected for initial ground support. A second-pass reinforced concrete final lining was placed, which was followed by contact grouting. This paper will consider the owner's representatives' view of the effectiveness of using precast concrete segments for this project. Topics discussed include segment design and erection, ground support, geotechnical instrumentation, segment erection verses contact grout interactions and tunnel production.

Interpretive geotechnical investigations were performed for the construction of approximately 15,250 m (50,000 ft) of wastewater interceptor tunnels in Austin, Texas. Subsurface materials consist of claystone (or clay shale), siltstone, altered volcanic tuffs, chalk and limestone. Special conditions include multiple crossings of Onion Creek with cover ranging from about 1/2 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft.), and the potential for mixed-face conditions consisting of water-bearing gravels overlying clay shale or siltstone. The methods and results of the geotechnical investigations are discussed and the inferred construction conditions are compared to those encountered during tunneling. A suggested format is presented for interpretive geotechnical reports for underground construction projects.

A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits, thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d?Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long hole stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23 Mt of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 Mt are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km radius of the mine site. In addition to managing mass blasts, means must also be found to mitigate the vibrations produced by the blast to diminish the disturbance to the neighbourhood. Therefore, the mine used numerous tools to properly plan the blasts and reduce the impacts. A program to control vibrations was one of the first tools put in place. The program?s aim was to draw up an action plan to ensure a follow-up of the homes by inspecting them. The second tool was to develop a methodology to plot a reliable attenuation curve and to adequately determine the maximum charge weight for each blast. Finally, effective communication tools were developed to inform the neighbourhood. There was a huge amount of work to be done in relation to the bench. Reliable and fast loading techniques had to be found to load large blasts in a very short period of time. Adequate logistics had to be developed to send underground more than 20,000 kg of emulsion per day while performing the daily underground operations. Technology had to be developed to adapt the i-kon electronic blasting system to large blasts. Since the control of the charges was the major factor to reduce surface vibrations, it was important to employ loading techniques that would permit decking of the long holes to reduce the charge weight per delays without adversely affecting the loading. All of this work requires an enormous amount of energy but also close collaboration between the different stakeholders (various departments, suppliers and consultants).

Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

An experimental study on the oxidation of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) particles was conducted by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The oxygen concentration in the process gas was set to 40% and 70% (by volume) and a heating rate of 40°C/min was used. Response variables included the temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic heat of reaction, particle mass, morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Based on the experimental data and phase stability calculations, reaction mechanisms were proposed to represent the behavior of the particles during oxidation. The reaction mechanisms were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the oxidized particles and by thermochemical and mass balance calculations to reproduce the DSC and TGA data. Overall kinetic models were developed to represent the evolution of the exothermic heat of reaction as a function of time.

Introduction Fluorspar demand or consumption has been taken for granted in recent years, except for those that produce, market, or consume the commodity. Thinking used to be that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources. It created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The US and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. Goals for the government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. US production and distribution Fluorspar Fluorspar shipments from US mines reached an all-time high near the end of World War II in 1944 at 375 kt (413,800 st). Eighty-two mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) each, and 10 mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st.) each. Illinois supplied 43% of total shipments. Consumption in 1944 was 372 kt (410,200 st), of which 56% was used by steel producers and 32% by HF producers. This was the last year that US production exceeded US consumption. The post-World War II record for fluorspar shipments occurred in 1951 at 315 kt (347,000 st) 58 mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) and eight mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st).

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail for analysis causes inefficient operation and hence sub-optimal energy and water use. It is difficult to analyze the performance of mining and metallurgical processes without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. To take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. This paper presents an infrastructure with advanced tools that sift through available data, identify and eliminate gross errors, and transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. Collaboration is a key component of improving efficiency of energy and water use, and the evolution of Web technology enables collaboration and troubleshooting of plant information to more quickly act on issues to reduce wasteful operation. More than 220,000 diamonds have been found in the United States that range from microdiamonds to 40.42 carats in weight (Table 1). Some reports suggest diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have also been found in this country, although these reports have not been verified. The source of most of the diamonds in the United States is a group of kimberlite pipes, dikes and blows in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district and a group of lamproite pipes in the Murfreesburo, AR area. Other areas where diamonds have been found include the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Coast and the southern Appalachian Mountains. The latter two regions are generally not considered favorable for diamond deposits. This is based on exploration models. They suggest commercial diamond deposits will be restricted to kimberlites emplaced in Archean cratons and to lamproites emplaced in Proterozoic mobile belts accreted to the cratons.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.
