Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.

The longterm aim of this research project is to find fast ways of simulating the recoverable reserves of a deposit for input into financial Monte Carlo simulations without having to conditionally simulate the whole orebody many times. The first step in this re- search is to visualize and quantify the ore tonnage T and the metal quantity Q above an arbitrary cutoff z. This paper presents detailed results for one specific distribution, the lognormal. These lead to a suggestion of a fast way of simulating QTz curves.

At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980's. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today's dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven't the courage.

Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

Nickel laterites throughout the world are similar in their gross aspects, but vary significantly in detail. The deposits occur in two separate and distinct geologic settings --those formed over ultramafic rocks which were mechanically emplaced, and those formed over ultramafic rocks that were intruded as melts. The source of the primary nickel in the parent rock may occur both as ionic replacement in silicate lattices and as nickel sulfides. Factors controlling the degree of laterization and nickel enrichment are dependent upon the parent rock characteristics as well as chemical and climatic conditions. Two chemically and physically distinct zones (oxide and saprolite) are commonly present in the laterized rock, but one or the other may be extremely thin or absent. Cobalt and copper may be present in recoverable amounts. Geologic, geophysical and geochemical methods are all utilized in exploring for these deposits. These methods are compared, evaluated and illustrated in the paper. Drilling patterns and ore reserve calculations are also discussed. In contrast to many ore deposits, processing costs are much higher than mining costs. The most efficient processing method is directly dependent upon the chemical composition of the ore. This variation in the chemical and physical characteristics of nickel laterites requires a detailed test program of the metallurgical response to representative samples and blends of ore. Detailed laboratory and bench-scale metallurgical tests are necessary prior to a full scale pilot plant test.

The West Gates Deicing Industrial Waste Pond Expansion project at Denver International Airport seeks to expand utilities to accommodate additional terminal gates. The project includes six tunnel crossings beneath taxiways and runways with lengths ranging from 239 to 2,025 linear feet. Excavation methods include shielded tunnel boring machines and steerable auger boring. Designed initial support includes liner plate, steel ribs and lagging, steel casing, and Fiberglass Reinforced Pipe and ranges in size from 24" to 132". This paper will discuss challenges associated with the overall layout and design of the project, including contingencies to protect critical infrastructure. In addition, a construction update is provided.

S. and the Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky fluorspar districts . Companies such as Allied Chemical and William- son Mining operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, Colorado, the Colorado Fluorspar Company operated mines and mills.

Power draw of the mill has been accepted as an indicator of the performance of the mill, yet the problem of predicting power under a given set of mill operating conditions still remains to be solved. In the literature, this problem of predicting power is attributed to a lack of knowledge with regard to the motion of the charge. Here a DEM based model is used to analyze the motion of the charge. The resulting information is used to predict the power draw of the mill. A 16-ft diameter mill is simulated. A factorial design study of the variables-mill speed, lifter configuration and ball size distribution-as independent variables is taken up. The power draw as a response variable is analyzed to establish the best operating condition of the mill.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

Early studies in the carbonate leaching of uranium ores led to the investigation of pressure leaching as a method to enhance the dissolution of the metal values in this system. The initial investigations conducted at the University of British Columbia supplemented by the work done by the group at the A.E.C. Grand Junction pilot plant, all established the higher efficiency and better economics of the alkaline pressure leaching system. This work was conducted either in laboratory autoclaves using oxygen overpressures, or in pilot plant sized horizontal autoclaves with air as an oxidant. Both of these testing vehicles utilized agitation provided by relatively high speed impellers (300 to 700 rpm), which apparently enhanced the oxidation of the uranium to the hexavalent state. The installation of vertical autoclaves on a production scale, which through design considerations require relatively slow agitator speeds (68 rpm), led to the studies of the utilization efficiency of the air addition and the use of catalytic type oxidants to effect a greater usage of the oxygen added through the aeration system. In addition to investigating the effects of the chemical additives, studies were also conducted on the effect of different impeller configurations on the extraction of uranium, which in itself is a measure of oxidation efficiency. The material presented in this paper was compiled in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, and the majority of the data was obtained in the Homestake- Sapin Partners mill, located at Grants, New Mexico.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done.As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal.Technology gaps targeted by the MINER ActThe MINER Act addressed several technology challenges:• Problems with donning and switching between self-contained, self-rescuers (SCSRs).• Poor visibility in smoke.• No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine.• Limited breathable air supply.• Inability to locate trapped miners.• Inability to communicate with trapped miners.• Failure of mine seals."

This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. A detailed strata-mechanics investigation and examination was carried out in the E2 Panel (ML-II/7) of the XVI Bottom coal seam, which is located in the Moonidih Colliery of B.C.C.L., Jharia coalfield, India. Above this panel, the XVI Top coal seam was previously worked out by a longwall panel. Based on intensive field study and on experiments in a number of longwall panels located within various Indian coal mines, the actual behavior of the coal roof strata was evaluated and new strata-mechanics concepts around the longwall panels were developed. These concepts resulted in new methodologies concerning the behavior of roof rocks, caving characteristics, etc. within longwall panels and in the area of strata mechanics. Based on these new strata-mechanics concepts, a very simple, but realistic, model was developed to determine the optimum capacity of the powered supports. This model considered the combined loads resulting from the detachment of strata and composite layer blocks from the face and, also, loads due to the deflection of strata and composite layers situated above the detached roof rockmass. This formula, along with the other related formulas by the author, prompted the determination of the optimum capacity requirement for the powered supports to be used in the XVI Bottom coal seam, located under the worked out area. This new concept in strata mechanics and capacity requirements of the powered supports in a longwall face may be an aid to Mining Engineers.

Apart from its role as an essential input to a wide array of agricultural chemicals and industrial processes, sulfur is interesting in that its supply involves competition between primary product and by-product. This general production structure is found repeatedly among markets for metals and other industrial minerals, and research results from the sulfur market potentially carry over to other markets with similar structures. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the recent and prospective market for sulfur. The analysis will rely heavily on simulation using a comprehensive model of the North American sulfur market developed by the author. Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control etc. development of realistic numerical/simulation models of in-situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop these simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-in variance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper the stochastic fractal models are reviewed and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been per-formed using coal sulfur data from a mined out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

Bigger flotation cells can result in larger froth surface areas and longer froth transport distances, this has been credited to impact froth recovery. Thanks to recent advancements, the newer flotation machines can be designed with different launder and crowder arrangements to enhance froth management. Nevertheless, lower head grades, complex ores and even larger mechanical flotation cells can lead to insufficient froth collection, even if the cell is equipped with the most recent flotation advancements like the center launder design. Aforementioned issue can become critical at the end of the flotation row. Increased crowding has been proven to be a solution to overcome inadequate froth recovery. However, scaling-up crowders for larger flotation cells can rise challenges, particularly in terms of structural limits and design for service. This paper presents the development journey for the Spider Crowder Upgrade, an advancement to improve froth collection in large flotation cells that are already equipped with center launders.
