"Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine was one of the top two producers of mercury metal in North America in 1988 and 1989. As a by-product, elemental mercury is produced from cyanide soluble mercury minerals, primarily to reduce the health risks incurred with the refining of precious metal precipitate containing elemental mercury and mercury amalgams. A discussion of the design, primarily the Merrill-Crowe units, and permitting for the safe production of mercury will be presented. Additionally, laboratory testwork to determine the effect of mercury on reagent requirements in the Merrill-Crowe process will be discussed.

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

The results obtained from hatch, flotation experiments on two coals were used to develop relationships between the recoveries of water and solids into the concentrate. When the recovery of non-ash material (RN) for any size fraction is plotted against a parameter X, defined as [x _ Amount of (W) recovered x Collector dosage (C)in the concentrate (cc)(kg/t)] a single "non-ash recovery curve" is obtained. Non-ash recovery curves thus obtained from different size fractions are used to get a unique "modified non-ash recovery curve" for a given coal, using the reduced efficiency curve concept. Similar observations have been noted in the case of recovery of ash material (RA) also. The amount of water recovered into the concentrate is plotted against a parameter "Water Recovery Factor (WRF)," defined as [WRF = T.F.(1+C)] where T is time (in sec) and F is frother dosage (in kg/t). Plotted in this form a characteristic water recovery curve, for a given coal is obtained that may be defined by the following equation: [W4=W_(1 pWRF-e] The above relationships have been verified against the experimental results obtained from three more coals and are found to give satisfactory predicted values.

Similar to modern day petro-chemical processes, the flotation column is a complete break from the conventional manner of floating on a batch basis in cells. The column has a reputation of being only suited for cleaning applications, particularly that of molybdenum cleaning. The original column, invented and developed by Column Flotation Co. of Canada, Ltd., was developed as a Rougher-Scavenger. Only after proving its capability in this field was cleaning allowed. One rougher-scavenger column in closed circuit with a cleaner column produced better grade and recovery than a conventional cell plant consisting of one stage of roughing, two scavenging and four stages of cell cleaning. Three cleaner columns replaced 13 stages of conventional cell cleaning and resulted in higher grades and recoveries. The gentle countercurrent action of the column itself together with complete automatic control enable this machine to produce such results.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the feasibility of incorporating in situ stope leaching into active underground metal mines. Stope leaching, a modified in situ leaching technique, proposes to recover metals by leaching fragmented ore in existing underground openings and collecting and processing the metal-bearing solution to recover the valuable metals. If leaching solutions escape from the stope, either through geologic discontinuities or highly permeable zones in the rock, valuable metals dissolved in the solution may be lost. Escaping solutions may also contaminate ground waters. Consequently, in fractured rock, the characteristics of the fractures in the vicinity of the leaching stope must be understood before introducing actual leach solutions into the stope. Effectively characterizing a rock mass requires the integration of several disciplines including structural geology, borehole geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, and mining engineering. This paper will focus on the general geologic and geophysical techniques that can be used to characterize the rock mass at an underground simulated stope leaching site. The results of several geophysical logging methods, tested at the site, are compared to the geologic core descriptions. Then, the? effectiveness of the different geophysical techniques in delineating fracture zones will be assessed. Knowledge gained through the geologic and geophysical analyses can be used to supplement results from hydrologic testing. This information can also be utilized in designing blast patterns and developing strategies for controlling or blocking movement of escaping leach solutions.

The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media is investigated by the Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through rubblization. By producing a maximum block diameter of 4 m, injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

"Titanium and titanium alloys are commonly selected for pressure oxidation autoclave vent piping and pressure control valve components, as well as autoclave internals and other process piping. In the autoclave vent application, titanium ignition risk is controlled by limiting oxygen concentration, and preventing high gas velocity gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration is dependent on the autoclave pressure and temperature operating conditions and therefore oxygen concentration and the associated titanium ignition risk is dependent on standard operating procedures, process control interlocks and permissive conditions. It is not uncommon for these standard controls to be deficient during atypical operating conditions, or for operations to deviate from the operating procedures, increasing the potential for a titanium ignition incident. Titanium ignition risk caused by elevated oxygen concentration in autoclave vent systems can be reduced with the introduction of an online autoclave overpressure calculation and the configuration of associated interlocks and permissive conditions. INTRODUCTION High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a well recognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulphide ores and concentrates before conventional leaching with cyanide. Titanium and titanium alloys are highly corrosion resistant in pressure oxidation process conditions and are therefore commonly selected as materials of construction for many components including: autoclave internals, agitators, process piping, and components in autoclave vent systems. Operations that anticipate or have experienced aggressive corrosion in the vent system often have little choice in material selection other than the use of titanium (Krag & Henson, 1992). Titanium is not suitable for use with elevated oxygen concentrations and is considered a restricted material because of its high pyrophoricity and combustion propagation properties (Beeson, Smith, Stewart, 2007). Several serious incidents have occurred in which titanium materials have ignited in autoclave applications (Zawierucha, McIllroy, Million, 1995). In autoclave vent applications, titanium ignition risk is reduced by preventing elevated oxygen concentrations, maintaining low gas velocities, and minimizing the potential for gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration in the autoclave vapour phase and vent system is dependent on the autoclave operating pressure and temperature conditions and therefore titanium ignition prevention controls typically include process interlocks and operating procedures based on the selected nominal design operating conditions. However, it is not uncommon for these controls to be deficient or for operations to deviate from the nominal operating conditions over time, increasing the risk of titanium ignition. The introduction of an online calculation of autoclave overpressure and a maximum target autoclave pressure as well as associated process control interlocks and permissive conditions can alert the autoclave control room operator and prevent an elevated oxygen concentration from developing, and therefore reduce titanium ignition risk in autoclave vent systems."

"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

The most economical method of reclaiming land that has been mined, whether it be in urban areas or in rural areas, is when the final configuration of the mining area is that which is required by the subsequent use. Surprisingly, there are a number of examples of this situation. In the arid southwest where water production for the expanding population is a problem, many urban sand & gravel excavation areas subsequently serve as holding basins for ground water recharge. In other areas of the county where water is not in short supply, sand and gravel excavations can be planned in such a way that subsequent land uses such as parks and homesites can be enhanced by utilizing the excavated areas as a water amenity. Reclaiming land for agriculture is another example of utilizing the excavated area for a subsequent use providing the excavated area has not been mined too deep. Other than replacing the layer of topsoil on the excavated area, the final configuration of the mining area is in many cases ready for the subsequent agricultural use.

One hundred and eleven pyrite samples from 3 porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. In particular cases, pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada&apos;s Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. Also found in minor amounts are scheelite, apatite, epidote, calcite, tourmaline, and some arsenides (notable loellingite). Quartz

Automatic control of fine-coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of adequate sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for the on-line determination of ash contents in fine-coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73[±] 4% ash over a range of from 65% to 90% ash. While the results are comparable, the video-based system costs only a fraction of what a nuclear-based analyzer costs. The sensor is now installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant, which is owned by Pittston Coal Co.

"Formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an oxidizing agent stronger than oxygen, by chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is a copper iron sulfide mineral, during grinding, was investigated. It was observed that chalcopyrite generated H2O2 in pulp liquid during wet grinding and also in the solids when placed in water immediately after dry grinding. The generation of H2O2 during either wet or dry grinding was thought to be due to a reaction between chalcopyrite and water where the mineral surface is catalytically active in producing •OH free radicals by breaking down the water molecule. The effect of pH in the grinding medium or in the water in which solids are added immediately after dry grinding showed that the lower the pH value, the higher the H2O2 generation. When chalcopyrite and pyrite are mixed in different proportions, the formation of H2O2 was seen to increase with increasing pyrite fraction in the mixed composition. The results of H2O2 formation in pulp liquid of chalcopyrite and together with pyrite at different experimental conditions have been explained by Eh-pH diagrams of these minerals. This study highlights the necessity of revisiting the electrochemical and/or galvanic interaction mechanisms between the chalcopyrite and pyrite in terms of their flotation behavior.IntroductionHydrogen peroxide causes nonselective oxidation of sulfide minerals if present in pulp liquid. Oxidation of sulfide minerals takes place when they are exposed to atmosphere and during the grinding process when the particle size is reduced for flotation. The oxidation of chalcopyrite leads to iron dissolution from the particle surface and from a metal-deficient, sulfur-rich surface (Fairthorne et al., 1997). Other studies report the formation of iron hydroxide on the surface with the metal ion dislodged on the surface (Buckley and Woods, 1984; Chander, 1991). "Recent government initiatives and commercial activities have targeted asteroids for in-situ characterization, manipulation, and possible resource extraction. Though emergent technologies may be effective for such undertakings, uncertainties remain concerning the effects a space environment may have on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Various non-destructive rock characterization techniques can empirically predict in-situ rock strength on Earth; however, these techniques must be adapted to account for unique space conditions. In order to mimic one element of a space environment, various rock samples were evaluated after prolonged exposure to low temperatures ranging from -75°C to 0°C. Tests included uniaxial compressive strength, Schmidt hammer, and ultrasonic pulse velocity, while rock types included shale, limestone, and chalk. This data was used to generate a temperature correction for the non-destructive methods and evaluate the accuracy of these methods in predicting strength values. Overall, these results provide insight on the mechanical behavior of rocks at low temperatures and may be used to design robust systems needed for asteroid rock characterization INTRODUCTION NASA and various commercial entities have recently targeted near-Earth asteroids for exploration and scientific investigation to better understand their in-situ properties, mechanical characteristics, and formative processes. In particular, NASA’s Asteroid Initiative encompasses several studies and mission plans that will enable future investigations while vetting technologies that can be applied to deep space exploration. One component of the Asteroid Initiative is the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM). This multi-stage space mission proposes to rendezvous a robotic spacecraft with a large near-Earth asteroid. Upon approach and after landing, the spacecraft will prospect the surface and identify a multi-ton boulder (up to 5 m in its largest dimension) suitable for capture. The robotic spacecraft will engage the boulder, remove it from the parent asteroid, and return the sample to a controlled lunar orbit. Once the asteroid mass is in stable orbit around the moon, astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will engage with the retrieved asteroid for manned exploration that will include sample collection and geologic prospecting. Launch plans for the ARM robotic craft are expected as early as 2020, and manned explorations of the asteroid mass in lunar orbit are expected to follow sometime in the mid-2020s (NASA, 2015). Overall this mission will demonstrate NASA’s ability to intersect, manipulate, and redirect an extraterrestrial body, while supplying scientific information that is relevant for planetary defense and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) applications."

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

Unplanned ore dilution can have severe impact on the economics of a mining operation. The paper discusses and distinguishes between controllable and natural parameters influencing ore dilution, and how it can be minimized in longitudinal mining systems of narrow vein orebodies. It is shown through data of surveyed stope profiles and numerical modelling that unplanned ore dilution is a function of stope design and construction, orebody geometry, and rock mass characteristics.
