The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a Fast Air-injected hydrocyclone-Shallow Tank (FAST) flotation system. Conventional flotation cell kinetics are a compromise between two conflicting requirements, the need for an agitated zone for rapid bubble-particle collision, and a quiescent zone for bubble-pulp separation. The Bureau of Mines has designed a flotation system in which bubble-particle collision and bubble separation are carried out in two discreet unit operations. A bubble slurry was mixed with an ore slurry at a high rate in a modified air-injected hydrocyclone for rapid bubble-particle collision. The mixture was then fed into a unit specially designed for rapid separation of the bubbles from the pulp. A conventional flotation cell required 2.8 min to obtain 90 pet recovery at a 7-pct Cu rougher concentrate grade, whereas the FAST flotation system can obtain 85 pet recovery with a 13-pct Cu rougher concentrate grade in 0.28 min, and 92 pet recovery with a 7-pet Cu grade in 0.56 min. The Bureau's FAST flotation system is adaptable to a wider variety of flow sheets and could potentially allow for replacement of conventional flotation cells with smaller and faster units.

There exists a wide array of industrial byproducts that produce beneficial responses in the soil/ plant environment. These materials range from clean-coal-technology residues produced during the generation of electric power (particularly those high in gypsum) to mineral fines produced by the aggregates industry (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). A number of these materials are examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems are discussed.

Dorreh barite mine located in the central part of Iran is one of the largest barite mines, in the country. The mine is subdivided into three blocks, which are called block 1,2,3 according the barite quality. In the central part of each block, a heavily concentrated grid of exploratory drill holes have been drilled and the reserves of area was calculated based on these holes, some years ago. It was decided to compute the reserve of the area by geostatistical methods, in the form of an M.Sc. project. In order to study the area, three regionalized variables including density, thickness and density-thickness (accumulation) was studied and the spherical variograms were fitted to these variables. These models were evaluated by cross-validation method. The optimized block size was chosen in order to compute the reserves by kriging method. The reserves of explored parts of each block of mine was calculated and the results were extended to the whole area of the blocks. The reserve of the explored parts and the total reserve of the area were calculated to be 96,000t and 1,670,000t respectively.

With full production from the Casteel Mine in 1987 The Doe Run Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fluor Corporation, encountered a significant increase of copper and iron to the Viburnum Mill. This major change of the lead, zinc, and copper metal ratios in the ore created circuit problems which adversely affected concentrate quality. Recognizing the problem, the company embarked on a metallurgical research program to include laboratory, pilot plant, and plant testing. The program developed an innovative copper prefloat process which both increased copper recovery and significantly improved concentrate quality. The process was tested and first operated at Doe Run's Brushy Creek Mill then installed at the Viburnum Mill in 1992. A brief history of development, plant operating data, and other potential applications for the patented processes will be described in the paper.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.

"The EarthScope Transportable Array (TA) of broadband seismometers (www.usarray.org) was deployed across southwest Wyoming from November 2007 through May 2009. During this time period the Array Network Facility (ANF, anf.ucsd.edu) detected and located a total of six seismic events near the trona-mining district. This lack of seismicity is atypical compared to coal mines employing similar mining methods. In this study, eighteen months of continuous seismic data from several nearby TA stations are reexamined using conventional and correlation-based methods to detect seismic events. Waveform cluster analysis and epicentral locations are used to discriminate between mining induced seismicity (MIS) and seismic energy generated from surface blasts at nearby coal mines. The locations and magnitudes of the 143 newly detected MIS events are compared to regional subsidence as measured by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). INTRODUCTION An abundance of natural resources and a favorable political climate have made southwest Wyoming home to multiple large mining operations. Among these operations are five underground trona mines located approximately 50 km west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The trona mines employ room and pillar, longwall, and solution mining methods over an area roughly 900 km2, and produce a sizable portion of the world’s soda ash (Brown 1995). Historically, in the Rock Springs mining district, several relatively large magnitude seismic events have occurred. These events are thought to have been related to mining activity and have caused notable subsidence (Case 1997). The largest event in the region recorded by seismometers, ML 5.1, has been confirmed as the 1995 Solvay Trona Mine collapse (Pechmann et al. 1995). In addition, blasting at surface coal mines near Rock Springs produces significant amounts of seismicity; approximately 50% of all daytime seismic events in the Mountain time zone from 2007 to 2009 locate near an active surface mine in this region (Astiz et al. 2014). Much of the current research related to surface subsidence and induced seismicity focuses on wastewater impoundment (Ellsworth 2013) and hydraulic fracturing. The observable seismicity in geological injection environments is widely variable and McGarr (2014) has argued that, in such environments, the maximum amount of seismic energy that can be released is proportional to the injected volumes. Like injection environments, in extraction (mining) environments seismicity is highly variable depending on many geological and operational variables (Boltz et al. 2012; Carnec and Delacourt 2000; Fritschen 2010; Iannacchione et al. 2005; Sen 2013) and does not always correlate well spatially with subsidence, a surface expression of extraction at depth."

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." "The solvent extraction of cerium(III) and samarium(III) from mixed solutions of all rare earth elements (REEs) except promethium using PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), an acidic extractant, was investigated. The effects of aqueous equilibrium pH, various acids (sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3 )), initial metal ion concentration and extractant concentration on the solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III) were systematically studied. From the experimental results, HNO3 and HCl were found to be the preferred aqueous media for the solvent extraction of both Sm(III) and Ce(III). The most promising experimental conditions of pH, PC88A concentration and metal ion concentration were identified for the extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III). Separation results showed that H2 SO4 at pH 2 provided the best separation between Sm(III) and Ce(III). IntroductionIn recent years, demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has increased significantly because of their many commercial applications. REEs have especially important high-tech applications owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, and they are used in a wide range of areas such as catalysts, ceramics, magnets, lasers, glass, neutron absorption and alloys. As REEs have very similar physicochemical properties, their separation and purification from each other is challenging and gaining significant interest. Samarium (Sm) and cerium (Ce) are found in different REE minerals, including bastnäsite ((Ce,La,Nd(CO3)F), xenotime (YPO4) and monazite ((Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4) at major production sites in the United States and China, as listed in Table 1 (Bleiwas and Gambogi, 2013). The most common acidic organophosphorous extractants used for REEs extraction and separation are DEHPA (di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid), PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), Cyanex 272 (bis-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid) (Sarangi, Reddy and Das, 1999; Surampally et al., 2012; Tian, Jia and Liao, 2013). Out of these extractants, PC88A is known for providing higher separation factors (Acharya, Mishra and Misra, 2015). El-Hefny et al. (2010) investigated the kinetics of the solvent extraction of Sm from chloride media using sodium salt of Cyanex 272 and reported the extracted species to be Sm(OH)A2•2HA. Lee et al. (2005) investigated the solvent extraction of Sm(III) with PC88A and saponified PC88A from chloride solutions and found the stoichiometry of the extraction reactions to be 1.5 with PC88A and 3 with saponified PC88A."

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine pl aces its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks, Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinate) and heading (yaw), are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: A scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system that employs ring-laser gyroscopes. This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to the remote positioning tasks of a continuous mining machine. Included are field test results of each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating mine in West Virginia.

An investigation was carried out to study the microscopic structure of coal in order to understand the phenomenon of methane migration. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEH) was used to study the surface and pore structure of bituminous coal taken from an underground mine. Micrographs obtained showed the highly porous nature of coal which explains the large quantities of gases that remain within the pores in the compressed and adsorbed forms. These micrographs further showed that most of the pores within the coal matrix are the 'dead-end' type and do not contribute much towards the flow of gas. The most important finding was that solid coal has a network of cracks and fractures indicating that it is these cracks that are primarily responsible for the gas flow, rather than the pores. The size and distribution of the pores within coal influence the capacity of coal to retain methane but movement of the gas molecules is the responsibility of the microfractures. Any mathematical modeling to simulate gas flow through coal must take this into account. For purposes of modeling, the structure of coal can be considered to have dual porosity. First, the gas molecules are released from the pores and there is a gradual migration towards the fractures. Once the gas reaches the fractures, its movement is eased greatly along these fractures.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

In a solvent extraction (SX) plant, stage efficiency calculations are used to determine mixer efficiency. With modern extractants and mixing equipment, it is generally taken for granted that stage efficiencies will be above 95%, but this is not always the case. Dependant on mixer/solution conditions, stage efficiencies can occasionally be low, therefore leading to higher reagent usage. Proper methods to identify when stage efficiency performance is below expectations, and ways to identify if it is an equipment or chemical issue are valuable tools for a plant metallurgist. With these tools and skills an on-site metallurgist can more quickly return their SX plant to proper operation. This paper will discuss methods for analyzing stage efficiency, evaluating factors that may affect stage efficiency, and evaluating the impact of stage efficiency on the overall operation.

Longwall mining is a commonly used method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Longwall mining causes the immediate seam roof to break and fall into the void created by mining. The convergence of the surrounding strata towards the mining void causes subsidence on the surface. The subsidence magnitude is related not only to the mining depth, the topography, the geological features and the overburden materials, but also to the sequence of the strata overlying a coal seam. In additional to the vertical subsidence which is evident at the surface, there are also horizontal movements inwards toward the centre of the void, which cause the surface to tilt, bend, stretch and com-press. This paper presents a parametric investigation of the influence of the overburden stratigraphy to surface deformations due to longwall mining using 2D finite element models. Models simulate rock movement by applying equivalent edge load to the open roof.

Over 2,000 shale gas wells have been drilled in the Pittsburgh Seam longwall reserves. As longwall panels are laid out, some of these shale gas wells must be located in longwall chain pillars. With longwall mining on both sides and the constraint of chain pillar size, gas well in chain pillars are subjected to longwall-induced ground movements and stresses, which could induce deformations in gas well casings Casing deformations are associated with several factors such as overburden geology, surface topography, setback distance, and casing construction. Overburden geology is one important factor that largely determines the locations and levels of deformations in gas well casings Previous NIOSH gas well research has found that casing deformations above the coal seam horizon are smaller under deep cover than unde shallow cover and that casing deformations could occur at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. Recent mine-by cases have provided more insights into the locations and amount of longwall-induced casing deformations as well as the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon. This paper presents three recent mine-by cases with shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under different overburden depths. Casing deformations were measured by multi-finger caliper surveys and predicted with numerical modeling. With the established numerical model, the effect of overburden depth was further analyzed to investigate the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. These mine-by cases not only provide a general demonstration of how overburden depths can affect longwall-induced stresses and deformations but also give a good indication about the level of casing deformations that could occur under different overburden depths. The study concludes that (1) casing deformations reduce with increase of overburden depths at the gas well; (2) a cementing alternative with production casing uncemented is an effective means to eliminate production casing deformations; and (3) large plastic casing deformation could occur in the production casing at the coat seam horizon under deep cover. The experience and knowledge gained from these mine-by cases would help longwall operators and gaza companies to take appropriate measures to minimize the influence of longwall mining in shale gas wells in chain pillars.

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, there are all of the following rock types: oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently; overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw. Several possible methods for improving the blast design were considered and a geophysical method was chosen for testing. There had been reports in the journals that seismic methods were being used in Europe as aids for blasting design. A literature search turned up work by Haxby 1/ on use of a refraction seismograph for measuring pit bench rock strength. Using his work as a springboard, equipment was purchased and a program was planned and carried out for developing, evaluating and implementing the seismic method for routine mine use. Following are discussions of the development program and results.
