"Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. In this paper, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models under atmospheric pressure phase, it has a reference value to the study of characteristics and models to single component gas."

The purpose of the project is to divert flood flows of North Potato Creek. The project is located in the southeast corner of Tennessee near Copperhill, approximately 160 kilometers north of Atlanta, Georgia. The project consists of: a 28-meter high dam, a 90-centimeter diameter outlet conduit; an emergency spillway; and a 4.0-meter diameter hard rock trans-basin diversion tunnel. This floodwater management system was part of Cities Service Company mine safety program for the Cherokee orebody which is partially located within the stream channel. The following paper describes the entire project development from feasibility studies to design and construction management.

Convergence measurement across the 17.4 m (57ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 by 9.6 m (38 by 31 1/2 ft) I.D. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2 3/4 in.) and 5.7 cm (2 1/4 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to examine and improve airborne dust capture and methane removal performance of flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous mining machines using a blowing face ventilation configuration to reduce respirable dust exposure to shuttle car operators. Several testing conditions were examined to minimize shuttle car operator dust exposure without adversely affecting continuous miner performance and production. Curtain-to-face setback distance of 9.1 m versus 15.2 m (30 ft versus 50 ft), face ventilation airflow of 226.5 m3/min versus 339.8 m3/min (8,000 ft3/min versus 12,000 ft3/min), and the use of side-body-mounted blocking sprays (on versus off) were the three primary parameters compared. Scrubber airflow was set and maintained at 198.2 m3/min (7,000 ft3/min) throughout testing. An examination of slab cuts versus box cuts and the location of the shuttle car (present behind the continuous miner versus not present in the entry) was also performed to demonstrate the effects of these constantly changing scenarios on scrubber performance. Results show that the best blowing face ventilation setup for minimizing shuttle car operator dust exposure for the tested parameters uses a 15.2-m (50-ft) curtain-to-face setback with 339.8 m3/min (12,000 ft3/min) face ventilation while operating the side-body-mounted blocking sprays. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in U.S. underground coal mining operations, potentially leading to coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (black lung). The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that respirable dust exposure to coal mine workers does not exceed a 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (79 Fed. Reg. 24814 (2014)). Although using a blowing face ventilation configuration on continuous miner (CM) sections is beneficial for removing methane emissions from the mining face, it can be detrimental for dust control for shuttle car (or ram car) operators and any other workers on the return ventilation side of the CM when compared to exhausting ventilation. Even with machine-mounted scrubbers on CMs, shuttle car operators still have some of the higher dust exposures with blowing face ventilation systems (NIOSH 2011, Beck et al. 2015). Although scrubber discharge air is not completely clean, dust being blown around the scrubber inlet and therefore not being captured by the scrubber can further increase these dust exposures (Goodman 2000). Dust control problems are also caused by inadequate face ventilation quantities causing scrubber face airflow recirculation issues (Schultz et al. 2010). In order to minimize respirable dust exposures on blowing face ventilation sections, ventilation, water spray, and scrubber parameters were experimentally examined to improve operating ranges for both dust and gas control. Several blowing face ventilation factors were examined with respect to CM spray systems and scrubber operation. Curtain-to-face setback distance and side-body-mounted blocking sprays were previously examined in the laboratory for dust control on a full-scale CM model using a scrubber on a blowing face ventilation system (Goodman 2000). The blocking sprays produced larger dust reductions at the CM’s rear corners and return for a 6.1-m (20-ft) curtain setback distance as compared to a 12.2-m (40-ft) curtain setback distance with equal face and scrubber airflows of 169.9 m3/min (6,000 ft3/min). Because face ventilation airflow quantities, shuttle car operator locations, and tracer gas concentration gradients were not previously examined during these experiments, additional research was required to determine improved operating parameters for blowing face ventilation systems.

During the testing and design of the Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine, it was found that a much higher carbon loading was possible with CIC (carbon-in-solution columns) than with CIP (carbon-in-pulp). In an effort to keep the carbon handling minimized, an emphasis was put on forcing gold to the CIC circuit rather than the CIP. After considerable study, it was found that a circuit with two thickeners and an interstage leach would force 90% of the gold to CIC. Computer modelling indicates that the benefits of the hybrid circuit include higher recovery, less carbon handling, fewer leach tanks, and lower reagent costs.

Due to the current cost and availability of crude oil in Brazil, Samarco Mineracao S. A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. In 1900, placer gold was discovered on the beach of Nome, AK on the southern coastline of Alaska's Seward Peninsula (Garnett, 1991). The site is about 800 km (500 miles) from Anchorage. Nome is connected to Anchorage only by air (daily) and by sea (summer). Total onshore placer gold production from Nome's immediate vicinity was more than 155.5 t (5 million oz). Alaska Gold Co, has continued to produce gold onshore with, until recently, two bucketladder dredges, each of 255-L (9-cu ft) bucket capacity. Small-scale marine dredging for gold has been at- tempted several times this century (Garnett, 1991). Western Gold Exploration and Mining Co. Ltd. Partnership (WestGold) is the only company to have been successful in achieving a significant offshore production. The Nome bucketladder-dredging operation from 1986 to 1990 constituted a unique marine-mining experience in the United States. \Inspiration Gold Inc., WestGold's predecessor, acquired six offshore leases in 1985. The total lease area of 87 km2 (21,551 acres) extended from the coastline to the 4.8-km (3-mile) offshore limit (Fig. 1). Those leases al- ready had been partially explored. Drilling was conducted off the shorefast winter sea ice. Therefore, it was rarely more than 1.6 km (1 mile) from the shore or in water deeper than about 9 m (30 ft). In 1985, estimated reserves comprised of a 5-m (17-ft) vertical thickness of sediments below 6.3 m (20 ft) of water. This meant a mean digging depth below the mean sea level (msl) of 11.3 m (37 ft). It was thought that the offshore Nome deposit possessed a feature that is common with many terrestrial gold placers - the secret of profitable exploitation of the marine deposit lay in maximizing the dredge throughput to minimize the unit costs. The inability of the project to withstand the prohibitively high cost of a new dredge was recognized. So Inspiration Gold purchased a used unit. This was the world's largest ocean- going bucketladder dredge (Fig. 2). Binzn was an 850-L (30 cu ft) bucket capacity dredge that was lying idle in Singapore. Originally constructed in the Jurong shipyard of Singapore in 1979, Bima was designed by Mining and Transport Engineering, a subsidiary of IHC Holland. Billiton Marine used the dredge for tin production at Pulau Tujuh in Indonesia (Dieperink, 1978) before it was laid up in mid-1985. Bima underwent a nine-week refit before departing Singapore on June 4,1986, with 800-t (880-st ) of deck cargo. It was dry-towed for 32 days to Alaska. A slower, less expensive, wet-tow at the authorized 5.5 kmthr (3 knots/hour) would have delayed the dredge's arrival in Alaska untl almost the onset of winter. The 13,000-km (8,100-mile) voyage was made on the deck of Smit Lloyd's "Giant-4" submersible barge towed by its 7.8- MW (10,500-hp) tugboat. The first season's dredging revealed several major shortcomings in Bima. Further repairs and modifications were undertaken at Tacoma, WA. The dredge returned to Nome for the June start of the 1987 summer dredging season. The refitted Bima worked offshore at Nome from 1987 to 1990. It produced 3.67 t (118,078 oz) of gold at an average recovered grade of 824 mg/m3 (0.0204 oz/cu yd). In 1991, the dredge was dismantled and sold.

Hematite ore pellets require a much higher induration temperature than magnetite ore pellets because no exothermic heat is generated due to oxidation inside during induration-like magnetite pellets. Carbon is used as in situ heat source in hematite ore pellets which can reduce temperature requirement in the induration strand and hence decreases energy consumption. Many investigators have reported that a 0.8–1.25% addition of carbon in hematite pellets can improve the pellet properties also. However, to investigate the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets, its reaction mechanisms and kinetics study are required which have not been done so far. Therefore, the reaction mechanism and its kinetics have been studied in this investigation. It has been found that carbon reaction happens in pellets from the surface towards the center in a topochemical manner which is controlled by pore diffusion of gas, and its activation energy is around 52 k J mol− 1. It is also found that apart from in situ heat, carbon in hematite pellets enhances diffusion bonding which improves pellet properties. This study ascertains the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets which may help operators to use carbon effectively to reduce energy consumption and improve pellet properties.

Between 2005 and 2021, a NIOSH internal review showed that haul trucks were involved in 54 incidents at surface mines in the United States. Haul truck collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can assist in preventing accidents at surface mines. CXS use technologies to detect people or objects and alarm to alert haul truck operators. Robust testing can help ensure that they detect objects without excessive false positive alarms. Testing and validation would increase confidence in and encourage implementation of a CXS. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed documents related to the evaluation and validation of CXS with two objectives: (1) to identify methods and parameters used to evaluate detection performance and (2) to identify gaps in CXS test methods and in detection performance. Stakeholders can use the findings from this research to guide implementation of CXS to improve safety at surface mines.

Natural resins, those derived from coal and those mined in the Uintah basin, face challenges from synthetic resins that are derived from petroleum sources and rosin or wood sources. In the past, fossil resins from coal were produced by various companies, the last one being Hercules, Inc., which sold BLACKHAWK resin until a fire destroyed the plant in the mid 1970's. Approximately four to fjve million pounds of BLACKHAWK were produced and sold mostly to the printing ink industry. Uintaite, more commonly known as Gilsonite® resin, was widely used by various industries, notably in printing inks, coatings, stains, adhesives, foundry, asphalt paving, and oil well drilling muds. Gilsonite has lost market share over the last thirty years to various synthetic resins particularly hydrocarbon resins that are derived from petroleum sources.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

It is difficult to decide who most deserves credit for discovery of a mining district that has produced over 19.8 Mg (7,000,000 fine oz) of gold and still contains a large reserve of low grade ore. Fred Culver may have made the first discovery. In the summer of 1867, the ship's log of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s steamer Otter stated that Fred Culver had been found nearly lifeless from wounds, without provisions, but with some 2.3 kg (80 oz) of rough, placer gold in the bottom of his canoe; he told of finding a rich creek and an attack by Indians that caused the death of his two companions. The place of rescue was about 24 km (15 miles) southeast from the present site of Juneau. Possibly John Muir, the hero of modem environmentalists, should be given important credit. In 1879 he reported finding mineralization along what later became to be known as the Juneau Gold Belt, and it was his report that induced the cantankerous German mining engineer, George Pilz, to grub- stake some of the prospectors who had drifted into Sitka from the declining gold placers of Cassiar, British Columbia. Pilz also offered rewards to Indians who might report gold discoveries.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined utilizing underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GMbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gaga probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 as thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.
