Most high, purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz-generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found which is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies - Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco, Inc. - mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, Illinois. Both companies mine from various locations within a ten mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Company mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The operation of an electrolytic refining tank house is an art as well as a science. If the electro-refining industry is to progress, a better understanding of the refining process is necessary. This would help to reduce the amount of training necessary to produce competent tank house operators who, in turn, would be able to increase both quantity and quality of the tank house product. To aid in understanding this process, quantitative relationships between the critical tank house variables must be established. The inherent major contributor to inefficiency in most tank houses is short circuits. By quantifying the effect of short circuits on each of the other variables in the system, as well as their effect on over- all system performance, better decisions regarding manpower allocation can be made. Current distribution under short circuit conditions, which has always been somewhat of a mystery, can be studied in detail. The relative importance of electrolyte balance, proper anode-cathode spacing, low contact resistance at points of electrical connection, and other system variables can be determined, With a better understanding of these variables, the steps necessary to increase current efficiency are more easily defined. Relationships between most of these variables are described in qualitative terms in the literature, but quantitative relationships between tank house variables have never been established. A realistic mathematical model of the tank house could be used to test the effect of variations in a single variable on other variables in the system, and thus define the quantitative relationships between tank house variables. It is not the purpose of this paper to establish these relationships, but to describe a recently developed model that can assist in their establishment. A computer program implementing this model has been applied to examine the effect of short circuits on overall current distribution. Some of the results are given here as examples of the utility of this program.

At the, Crescent Valley Mine of the Hanna Coal Company, several 10,000 ton unit trains of 41" x 0 strip coal are loaded per week during the lake season. This is accomplished without the use of any accumulation of prepared coal. A large raw coal pile is built up during the winter months adjacent to two truck dump bins. This is added to whenever trucks are coming in from the pits and trains are not being loaded. During the loading of trains, trucks from several pits dump into the truck hoppers and coal is also dozed in from the pile. At a rate up to 3200 tons per hour this coal is screened, the plus 6" hand picked, the plus 4" crushed, and' all weighed and sampled as it goes directly to railroad cars being handled on two tracks by car retarders. With such an arrangement it is possible to exercise some control over coal quality, if it can be assessed rapidly. For instance, if the moisture rises to a level where it seems probable the BTU per pound will be reduced to the point where the contract calls for penalties, the trucks from, the wettest pit may be stopped, more or less coal may be moved in from the stockpile, or other measures taken to assure that the average BTU of the trainload will be satisfactory.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

Block cutter machines have been extensively used in natural stone industry, which is a sub-section of mining industry. In this study, the costs occurring in plate losses cut from Bilecik beige marble with a circular saw block cutter machine have been predicted using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. One of SPC techniques is Shewhart control charts such as mean control chart. These charts have been efficiently at determining the plate losses. The costs occurring in plate losses have been calculated by using the result of Shewhart control chart. Finally, this study presents the necessity and usefulness of SPC techniques in assessment of natural stone industry.

This paper outlines patterns of methane emission in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations and the effects that these patterns have on the decision as to whether the methane is most economically handled by ventilation alone or by means of a methane drainage system in addition to ventilation. The costs of handling the methane in the ventilation system and the costs of implementing the methane drainage system will be discussed as well as the costs related to the production of coal. The important issue of production slowdowns and gas outs will also be discussed as well as the proper response of mine management to such a situation. Suggestions concerning the keeping of production records related to methane problems will be made as well as justification for more intensive economic analysis of coalbed methane extraction and utilization.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

Instrumentation engineers have recently devised practical methods of metering the net solids flowing in a hydraulic mixture. The solids flow rate is determined by measuring the specific gravity and the flow rate of the mixture. T e specific gravity is measured by a variation of the bubbler system. The flow measurement is made by a somewhat unorthodox orifice requiring field calibrations. The linear mixture flow signal is then multiplied by the specific gravity signal, which is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the mixture, to produce a linear solids Slow rate signal. The computations in this system are performed by Sorteberg pneumatic relays. Having obtained this measurement, integration and automatic control of hydraulic solids flow are available. This system is useful in mining, drilling and dredging industries. It provides maintenance of the net solids flow rate and reduces power consumption. Automatic control will provide rapid stabilization of net solids flow rate and release operators from making menual adjustments. The advantages of this application are economy of operation and increased pump efficiency, This paper describes a hydraulic solids flowmeter system installed aboard a dredge. Traditional aggregate sources, that is the riverbeds, the alluvial fans, located relatively close to the developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As the sand and gravel reserves are depleted, those production plants are unable to secure additional adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. We promote development, we promote the paving of streets, the building of houses, and industrial and commercial centers, and because of economics, we tend to favor those developments located close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors who soon become our detractors. In general, urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. The neighbors don't like the view of the pits or the quarries, they complain about the "dust", about noise, about trucking . . . in general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

The world market for bunkers represents some 140 MT (1980) of marine fuel oil and distillates. This is equivalent to 23CMT of coal, a potential market for steam coal larger than the total seaborne trade of steam and metallurgical coal today, and an obvious area which could contribute savings in world oil consumption. Oil bunkers are lifted fairly evenly throughout the world, the main supplying regions being Western Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America and Japan (Figure 1). Not surprisingly, the main customers are the tankers representing about 50 percent of the world market - (95 percent of the Middle East Market) - dry bulkers represent some 30 percent and general cargo ships the rest.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

In May 1975 the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a long-wall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting head.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the pillar over onto the conveyor (Figure 1). There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system of which perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area2 and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in equipment horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 10,000 psi with an estimated flow rate of 50 gpm than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.

Rock from underground mining has a size-distribution, that varies from mine to mine, depends on rock conditions and mining method and on how much explosives etc, that is used. Because at the high costs, associated with full-scale studies of the size-distribution of blasted rock in a mine, detailed information is seldom published about such size-distributions. However, some facts can be noticed. Rock from tunnelling and other types of development work has a fine fragmentation. Cut-and- fill mining is a method that normally results in blasted rock with an advantageous size distribution. Block caving on the other hand often results in large amounts of boulders, since blasting of the rock is normally not used.

The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. It has been estimated that 30% of the United States coal reserves occur in the Western States at depths which would preclude exploitation by surface techniques. Much of this coal occurs in seams considerably thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country. Recognizing the lack of technology and experience in exploiting the thicker seam range the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is implementing a major "Mining System for Western Coal," research program which has as its ultimate objective the development and demonstration of underground mining methods and technology for extracting these seams. One investigation, being carried out by D'Appolonia Consulting engieers, under contract to the Bureau of Mines, is concerned with design of an entry system for longwall top slicing of thick western coal seams. This presentation presents an overview of some of the problems which have to be faced in designing such layouts.

"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

One of the most commonly employed set of calculations in mill design and research is the material balance, known in wet beneficiation plants, as an Ore and Water Balance. For mill designers, the balance is one of the principal requirements in determining the proper size of launders, pipelines, process equipment, etc. In process development, one of the major goals is the establishment of an optimum balance. The usual procedure for calculating a material balance involves a manual technique utilizing reference tables, pre -obtained data, and a slide rule or desk calculator. With these, the engineer must perform a series of calculations which are repetitious in nature and time consuming. Figure I is the flowsheet of the grinding and flotation circuits for a copper concentrator. The initial ore and water balance was calculated manually and required approximately 24 manhours. Later, a number of changes were made in the balance, each of which required an average of 8 manhours.
