A longstanding problem in geostatistics is that kriging usually assigns significantly greater weights to end samples in strings of data than it does to central samples. These weights are theoretically valid, but suboptimal estimates may result when there are geological trends in the variable near contacts, that is, large weights may be applied to samples that are systematically lower or higher than average. A number of ad-hoc corrections exist, each with pros and cons; none are fully automatic with a well-defined measure of optimality. A new method for estimation in a finite domain is proposed. This method is referred to as finite domain kriging. The method is based on kriging with a successively larger number of data. The total number of relevant data (n) is established, and then n kriging matrices are solved. The first matrix has the closest single data value (n-1 weights are set to zero); the second has the two closest data (n-2 weights are set to zero) and so on. The final matrix has all n data. The kriging weights used for estimation are the average of the weights from the n successive kriging runs. Each kriging run is optimal, yet with different smoothing and a different treatment of data at the end of the strings. The result is a set of weights that does not give undue influence to data values at the end of strings. The methodology is developed with examples. Cross validation shows that finite domain kriging outperforms conventional kriging.

The initiation of a panel cave is an extremely important and infrequent event in the life of a large underground caving operation. A new cave was initiated at the Henderson Mine in 1991, 15 years after its first cave had been developed in 1976. The original cave was started after a half billion dollars had been invested in the development of the mine, mill and 23 km haulage system. Many things had changed since 1976, the most significant of these being much lower realizations for molybdenum. In 1976 the high demand for molybdenum and uncertainty of caving characteristics, formed the basis for a very conservative cave initiation sequence with miles of boundary weakening and inspection drifting. In 1991 the highly competitive molybdenum market in conjunction with 15 years of caving experience made for a very different mining climate.

In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

Geologic maps are indispensable tools in the modern search for mineral and fossil-fuel resources. They are the first essential step in understanding the lithologic nature and structure of rock units that form the land surface and that lie beneath it. They provide the basic foundation for planning mineral resource exploration programs and form the superstructure from which subsurface investigations are projected. In view of the economic application of such maps, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Government entered a formal agreement in 1960 to map Kentucky geologically on a scale of 1:24, 000, or one inch map distance equals 2,000 feet on the ground. A 7. 5-minute quadrangle would comprise the unit map area. A resolution which urged the preparation of a new geological map of the entire State was passed by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers in February 1959, and was presented to the Governor of Kentucky, the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Department of Economic Development (now Department of Commerce), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Kentucky Geological Survey with a request for support and action. The request was subsequently endorsed and actively supported by numerous civic and professional societies as well as representatives of various facets of Kentucky government, commerce, and industry. Monies to initiate the program were appropriated by the next session of Kentucky legislature; this appropriation was matched by federal funds (Hagan, 1961). Kentucky's state-wide topographic mapping project was completed in 1956, just four years prior to starting the geologic mapping program. The recently completed modern 7. 5-minute, 1:24,000 topographic maps made ideal bases for plotting areal geology. Had they not been available, it is doubtful if a geo- logic mapping program so large and comprehensive could have been undertaken.

The in situ mining of uranium is the process whereby chemical lixiviant is injected by means of wells into, and flowed through, an ore body. The lixiviant reacts with uranium which has been previously oxidized making the uranium soluble. The solution is then brought to the surface by means of producing wells. In situ mining disturbs the ground-water quality in the immediate area. Since ground water is a natural resource used by man, care must be taken not to allow the lixiviant to escape the local mining area. Also, when the ore body is mined out, the area should be restored to as near its original state as is reasonably achievable. The return of ground-water quality to its original state can occur naturally over a long period of time or be enhanced using appropriate technological means.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) established a Technical study panel (the Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the belt evaluation laboratory test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 91 - 107 cm (36- to 42-in.) wide conveyor belt. Due to today’s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 183 cm (72 in.) and wider conveyor belts. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

Flotation of fine and coarse coal after multistage addition of the frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. It was observed that the lowest ash content, specific gravity and reactivity of coal was associated with finer size fractions. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA) with calorimeter attachment. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, the removal of mineral matter affects the reactivity through the physical changes brought about by the ash removal. In the char combustion stage the mineral matter seems to influence the reactivity through the catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/incombustible material, internal pore structure and roughness.

"Underground coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the rib deformation and to stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand the performance of the mechanical bolts in coal ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted this work to understand the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of mechanical rib bolts. Different installation torques were applied to the tested bolts based on the strength of the coal seam. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response for mechanical bolts was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends mainly on the coal strength. Guidelines for modeling mechanical bolts have been developed using the tri-linear load-deformation response. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design.INTRODUCTIONThe design of rib bolting in U.S. coal mines is based on a trial-and-error process, which is insufficient to eliminate injuries and fatalities caused by rib falls. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 11 mines are bolting coal ribs, with 4 of those mines using the conventional mechanical bolts and the others using fully-grouted bolts. NIOSH researchers are developing an engineering design procedure for rib support. Pull-out test programs for mechanical and grouted rib bolts were conducted to understand the rib control mechanisms of rib bolts. Only the test results of mechanical bolts are presented in this paper.Mechanical bolt (or point-anchored bolt) is a tensioned bolt anchored down the borehole with a mechanical expansion shell or a resin-grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and occasionally a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type (Figure 1). The standard type shell is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the bar is generally 16 mm (? in) for the #5 bolt or 19 mm (6/8 in) for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled, since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the plug down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall."

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990's. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990's brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

There is general understanding of hoisting systems throughout the mining industry. However, the relative importance of the various parameters influencing hoist selection and utilization is not completely understood. In order to determine if these parameters can be identified and prioritized, data covering 613 hoist installations were compiled. The 613 installations represent hoisting systems in 30 countries on six continents. This study compares data to historical trends, correlates design parameters in an attempt to identify underlying selection criteria, and comments on the apparent trends in recent developments in hoist design.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

Scan electron micrographs, SEM's, will be shown of representative refractory clays from Missouri deposits, with counterparts from other localities. The story is in the pictures, ("1000 words in each picture"), but clay types include the following. Plastic, semi-plastic, and semi-flint "fire clays" of Missouri have textures which appear to retain certain relic texture of ball clay. Flint clay is composed of tightly interlocking packets, sheaves, and books of kaolinite. Diaspore and boehmite mineral textures characterize those "clays". Surface-boulder diaspore shows very pronounced recrystallization and crystal enlargement from original, unexposed first-grade diaspore.

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

This paper is a case study using new laser-terrain-mapping technology by EagleScan, Inc., for creating topographic maps. Holnam, Inc., has used this technology to create maps and volumetric calculations of several mines in the United States. The information is superior to conventional methods through accuracy, manpower, time, and cost. Holnam, Inc., was the first cement manufacturer to use the Digital Airborne Topographic Imaging System (DATIS?). The technology uses the DATIS? to produce high-resolution terrain maps and volumetric assessments of any area. DATIS? is a mapping instrument that integrates (1) a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) instrument to measure terrain elevation using laser light, (2) a large-format digital camera, (3) a relative position Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure aircraft position, and (4) an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to measure aircraft attitude. The DATIS? can measure up to 220,000 elevation samples per mil. The system continually collects data on the aircraft's position and measures the time for each laser pulse transmission to return from the ground, giving each sample a GPS reference. The system can operate at night, in overcast sky, and during high-wind conditions and can measure terrain below vegetation cover, unlike standard aerial photography used for traditional surveying and mapping. Surveyed ground-control panels are no longer necessary with this new technology, and only one ground GPS base station located within 60 mi from the aircraft position is required. A computer elevation-point data file is created with the x, y, z coordinates of each laser elevation sample. With this file, CAD engineering programs can create topographic maps that rival products using conventional aerial mapping techniques. Volumetric measurements of stockpiles and pits are also available due to the high density of points collected from an area. This new technology radically changes the turnaround time for map users, giving a product in the format used by today's cartographers. The time line from flight to maps is measured in days instead of weeks.

This paper outlines the methodology and results pertaining to the simulation of the U.S. coal industry in the context of an integrated, time-dynamic model of Long-Range Energy Developments and Supplies (LORENDAS). By way of background we will present first an overview of the overall LORENDAS model structure. We will, then, outline the characteristics of the formulation and data used for the representation of the U.S. coal industry. Finally, a series of model results will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the long term projections of coal production and distribution under different basic economic and/or political scenarios.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth
