Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. This paper summarizes the main achievements of our previous project entitled "Development of a technological system producing quality guaranteed fly-ash based binder". Furthermore, this study deals with the laboratory experience of lignite fly ash utilization for two different goals. On the one hand the fly ash was tested as a binder; on the other hand it was investigated as an underground mine backfill material. Considering the first goal, the utilization of a mixture of mechanically activated fly ash and lime for producing an independent binding composition has been assessed involving determination of relationship between the degree of activation of fly ash and the strength of the obtained concrete. The results confirmed that this hydraulic binder is suitable for construction of stabilization and capping layers or base layer. Regarding the backfilling application, this paper presents laboratory experiments, their results including settling tests, hydraulic permeability and strength measurements and dense slurry technology related results.

The mechanical properties of the rocks surrounding an orbital vibrator alter the shape and amplitude of the vibrator’s orbit. Detecting these changes with driving point impedance measurements promises to reveal fractures and, possibly, identify the in situ stress state and significantly increase the depth that can be investigated. Our research emphasis has been on detecting vertical fractures through casing. Experimental and numerical results to date indicate that our new logging tool has excellent potential for determining both the vertical extent and azimuthal orientation of such fractures. Fracture and in situ stress orientations are useful in mine planning.

The Canada Line is a 19km long automated light rapid transit system with 16 stations in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Concession was awarded to InTransitBC to design, build, partially finance, operate, and maintain the system for 35 years. The project must be complete by November 2009 to be ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver and Whistler, BC. The bored tunnel section consists of 2.45 km of twin bored tunnel and 3 stations. The station work is limited to the excavations and temporary support necessary to facilitate the bored tunnel works. A joint venture between SNC-Lavalin Constructors Pacific and SELI (SSJV) has recently completed the design and construction of this section. Work for the bored tunnel commenced in November 2005 with shoring and excavation works for the tunnelling operations pit that will become Olympic Village Station and will be completed in the spring of 2008. The tunnels were driven with a 6m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM) and lined with 250mm thick, 5.3m diameter precast concrete segments. Seven hundred and fifty meters of each tunnel were driven through glacial and interglacial deposits of sand, silt, and clay with granitic boulders. The paper discusses the challenges faced in negotiating these soils which contained unforeseen geological conditions. These conditions were overcome by developing a systematic approach to Risk Management that included thorough risk assessments, regular risk management meetings with the participation of two of the world?s leading EPBM experts, Professor Eisenstein and Professor Kovári, and by the ability of the construction team to effectively analyze and mitigate problems.

For the past several years, copper producers have faced a tough business climate. Nagging low prices forced many them to reduce their production and make other drastic cutbacks just to breakeven. And sometimes even that did not work. But, like other downturns in the industry, this latest dismal copper market allowed technology to make further inroads into mining and processing operations. Now that the copper market appears to be making a turn for the better, those years spent investing in technology by equipment manufacturers and forward-thinking mining companies should begin paying off.

Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. Voluntary Restraint Agreements with 21 steel exporting nations limited im¬port penetration to about 20% of the domestic market. It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. One of the best kept technology secrets in U.S coalmining history involved a robust coal geophysics program used by a local coal company to detect and map various geologic anomalies and man-made structures ahead of mining for nearly 15 years. Several original mine plans were changed as a result of findings from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic data. They indicated the presence of geologic anomalies in reserve areas that could adversely impact future mine development and longwall production. By combining the surface seismic and exploratory drilling methods, the coal company learned how to properly leverage its risk by gathering a lot of useful subsurface information before making major commitments.

Mining companies and contractors are looking at Wirtgen Surface Miners to provide flexibility at their operations. Wirtgen Surface Miners have been used in the surface mining industry for over fifteen years. The principle behind the Wirtgen Miner is a rotating drum equipped with tungsten carbide tipped cutting tools that excavates and sizes the material. The drum helix augurs the mined material to the center of the drum where it is loaded onto the primary conveyor belt. From there the material is conveyed to the discharge belt and into a truck bed. The cutting drum is located in the center of the machine, near the center of gravity. This permits the machine to cut hard materials as the entire machine weight is converted into cutting forces. Conventional mining practices are process, equipment, and labor intensive. Furthermore, strict environmental requirements pertaining to noise levels, dust pollution, and blasting, near buildings or urban areas, limit the application of conventional methods. Mining/ Construction contractors are using Wirtgen Miners in various limestone excavation projects, such as highway expansion projects, and new roads in housing developments. Mining companies in the industrial minerals and coal industry are using Wirtgen Miners to load directly onto trucks, eliminating the rehandling process and ultimately, primary crushers.

Magnetic surveying and map production is well established in land based mineral exploration. Magnetic data are routinely used to map geology in covered terrains, to estimate the depth to basement in overburden covered areas, and to identify altered zones, mineralization, bedding attitudes, and fault networks both regionally in map view, and through interpretation to depth in 3D. Best practices for magnetic survey methods and magnetic interpretation exist in all areas of land based geophysical survey methodology - mineral exploration, hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping, archeological mapping, and in military applications. At sea, and particularly under the sea, sophisticated magnetic surveys are being done, but it can be argued that these are primarily in niche applications, for example in naval mine-hunting and UXO applications. Magnetic data is not normally collected on AUVs and ROVs conducting mapping and hydrographic survey operations. OFG has developed physical and mathematical calibration routines so that magnetometers can be mounted directly onto AUV and ROV bodies where significant heading errors and magnetic gradients exist. This simplifies the routine deployment of magnetometers on AUVs and ROVs for mineral exploration and other magnetic survey applications without the need for towed bodies, ungainly mounting frames, or degaussing of the survey equipment. Our experience shows that magnetometers can be operated routinely on AUVs and ROVs and that with careful processing useful maps can be produced routinely at low cost.

Managers always look for systems with minimum hazards. The hazards create problems for performance of projects. The largest and most important hazards of working underground mine can be related to health, safety and environmental, because if one of these sectors be in hazard, maybe lead to close mine. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used quality improvement tool to identify the potential failure modes for measuring reliability of a product or a process. FMEA is performed by developing a risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of severity, occurrence, and detection ratings. On the other hand, with regard to uncertainty in the decision-making, fuzzy theory will be able to model this uncertainty. Fuzzy FMEA provides a tool that can work in a better way with vague concepts and without sufficient information than conventional FMEA. This article by using Fuzzy FMEA and based on HSE criteria evaluate hazards of Parvade No. 1 Mine in Tabas Coal Mine. The results demonstrate the most hazardous parameter is rock burst in this mine.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway is a new two-track subway line running from 125th Street and Park Avenue at the north, east along 125th Street to Second Avenue and south along Second Avenue to the Financial District in lower Manhattan, NY with 16 new stations and 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of track. The project has been broken into four construction phases. The initial Phase 1 operating segment includes three new stations (96th, 86th and 72nd Street stations) with a connection to the existing Broadway line at the 63rd Street Station at Lexington Avenue. Rehabilitation of the 63rd Street Station is also included in the scope of Phase 1. Subsequent phases extend service north and west to 125th Street (Phase 2), south to Houston Street (Phase 3) and finally to Hanover Square (Phase 4). The DMJM Harris/Arup Joint Venture (DHAJV) prepared the Contract Documents MTA for Phase 1. Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing the MTA with construction inspection services for Contract C-26002. In April 2007, NYCT awarded first Phase 1 for $337 million to S3 Tunnel Constructors, a tri-venture comprised of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone and Shea. Contract C26002 is for the construction of the tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) launch box and the mining of the TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street. The major part of the contract is to construct a shaft, commonly referred to as the launch box, from East 92nd Street to East 95th Street having dimensions of 244-m- (800-ft-) long by 18.9-m- (62-ft-) wide and a depth of 19.8 m (65 ft), including more than 91,000 m3 (119,000 cu yd) of soil and rock contained within its walls. The launch box will ultimately become the southern half of the 96th Street Station. The focus here is geological conditions at the launch box and existing structures along the launch box. These geologic conditions and existing structures had a major influence on the selection and design of the support of excavation system (SOE), the SOE bracing system, construction staging, the ground movements, dewatering and other challenges of constructing the launch box (Fig. 1).

Mining companies are continually looking for product-ivity and efficiency improvements with their equipment to reduce operating costs. This paper will review the results of a productivity analysis conducted at the Luscar Ltd. Boundary Dam and Bienfait mines near Estevan, Saskatchewan using a Computer-Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) installed on a track-type dozer. The CAES TTT system is a Global Positioning System that provides the operator with constant survey guidance. The study includes a productivity comparison between two similar test sites, one with the aid of the CAES system and the other, without. The CAES TTT system shows a productivity improvement of between 20 and 35% in the reclamation slope leveling application. Even with the CAES TTT system deactivated, some of the advanced features of the system were used to: retain terrain data for volume calculations; track the equipment position; and, accurately record and separate idle time from working time.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

In report the results of performance of research works on building up of the connected geoecological and geomechanical monitoring system for modelling and study of a state of mining massif in a region with large-scale underground mining works are discussed. The connected geoecological monitoring requires radical change of methodology of carried out works. To carry out modelling and researches it is impossible without construction of the integrated connected information model of region. Basis of construction of information systems and databases for all sections of Earth Sciences is the set of the approaches, among which, for example, methods of remote sounding, GIS- and GPS-technology etc. Computer technologies are basis on the "supercomputer" technology. The results of performance of some researches for regions of excavation of deposits of potash salts in Russia and Belarus are presented.
