The depth capability of engineering seismographs has been greatly increased by the use of signal enhancement, a technique in which seismic waveforms created by repeated impacts are digitized, stored, and summed. Summation amplifies the signal and partially cancels background noise. This gives a clearer picture of the wave aid makes it possible to determine the travel tune of signals from 'eater depth. Signal enhancement combined with continuous display of waveform, permanent recording of waveform, and precision digital readout of travel time has opened new fields of application in mining and engineering. Recent work has clown that replacement sulfides can be distinguished seismically from country rock at Bistee, Ariz. Work on the Iron Range of Minnesota indication,: that, by using a 300 pound weight as the source, the Biwabik iron Formation can be traced down dip to several hundreds of feet traverses over known areas show that reflections can sometimes be identified. Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

"The execution of classical building services in underground mining operations is more truth than myth. From small concrete foundations for conveyor belts to the construction of huge workshops for large machinery maintenance, nearly every operation requires building services. By creating such fixed facilities, these services ensure the efficiency of the production. A distinction must be made between fixed facilities which directly enable the production and auxiliary facilities which only indirectly support the production. The construction costs of such auxiliary facilities are often roughly estimated because they do not immediately contribute to mineral extraction. The research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’ seeks to address the question: ‘Can the construction costs concerning fixed auxiliary facilities be neglected e.g. within a prefeasibility study?’ The presentation will show the monetary relevance and significance of these auxiliary facilities and introduce a guideline for cost estimators. PROBLEM DEFINITION The overriding interest of an underground mining operator is to exploit the commodity with the maximal quality by minimum cost and time expenditure. If a new operation shall be installed, it has to promise profitability. Therefore, predictive economic feasibility studies are performed in advance of installation. Herein, all cost expenditure for installation and operation of the future underground mine is determined and compared to the expected income by selling the raw material. The described interest of the mining operator is the starting point of the research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’. While economic feasibility studies for future operations are focused on the profitable exploitation of raw materials and the efficiency of the accompanying necessary production processes, auxiliary actions are only considered rudimentary. Necessary production processes, as well as auxiliary actions regularly require classical building services, which are normally performed in construction business on the surface in the same manner. By performing building services like masonry or concrete works in underground mines, fixed facilities shall be set up in order to enable or support the raw material production. Production enabling fixed facilities are varying from small concrete foundations for conveyor belts or other infrastructural elements to upstream processing plants situated in the mine workings. While such fixed facilities are essential parts of the production process chain, supporting facilities underground shall increase the efficiency of the mining operation. Workshops, control rooms and social installations are only a few examples for supporting facilities. Those could be situated on the surface as well, but the efficiency increases significantly by installing them underground. Especially supporting facilities are evading from the main interest of the mine operator, since they are only indirectly connected to the production process. The formation of elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite in aqueous systems was investigated. Hallimond tube flotation tests showed that unoxidized sphalerite did not float well without a collector. Flotation recoveries of greater than 95 percent were obtained without the use of a collector or frother after the sphalerite had been reacted with oxygen under pressure and water at pH 2.8 at room temperature. High flotation recoveries also resulted when sphalerite was reacted in acidic solutions in the presence of platinum sponge, titanium sponge, 316 stainless steel, copper turnings, or [10-5M++]. Conditions which produced high flotation recoveries of sphalerite yielded contact angles of 37° to 40° and also produced elemental sulfur. The increase in elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite was detected by elemental sulfur extraction with petroleum ether, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and the electron beam microprobe. The quantity of elemental sulfur formed was insufficient to be detected by infrared or Raman spectroscopy, or by the optical microscope or by the scanning electron microscope. An electrochemical type reaction for the production of elemental sulfur in acidic solutions was proposed. The cathodic reduction of oxygen was the slow step which needed to be catalyzed. A chemical type reaction which produced H2S rather than elemental sulfur was evident in non-oxidizing conditions.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. The various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or matt not effect the adsorption of collectors. In yet another mechanism, the depressant nay participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature are discussed to highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

The iron disulphide minerals, pyrite and to a lesser extent marcasite, are ubiquitous to coal and coal associated rocks and are the source of nearly all the environmental problems associated with the mining, processing and utilization of coal. The iron disulphides as well as the other minerals in coal exhibit systematic spatial pat- terns of distribution on both regional and local scales and show predictable associations, most of which are determined by the geochemical-sedimentological controls under which they form. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the geochemical-sedimentological conditions responsible for the formation of coal minerals with special emphasis on the formation of iron disulphides, to illustrate the regional and local patterns of mineral occurrence within coal, to present the microscopic associations of the iron disulphides and finally, to discuss the most important single environmental aspect of the iron disulphide content of coal and coal associated rocks; the production of acid mine drainage.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

Petro-diesel is a common collector for fine coal froth flotation but partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DRO. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAHs were measured in tailings and concentrate streams, and coal recovery and ash rejection were tracked. Results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher DRO than tailing waters, and DRO in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. DRO again appeared to be limited to the WSF and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DRO. Results indicate optimal flotation performance should generally coincide with minimal DRO partitioning to process waters. Under typical operating conditions residual DRO should not present an environmental concern; however, conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat lying coal beds of the coastal plan are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the interrelationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

The interest in using halogens for extracting precious metals from ores has increased due to changes In ore characteristics, environmental concerns and regulations. The rediscovery of halogen leaching capability has been the topic of these and other writers1-30. Much work has been done on the performance of bromine, chlorine and iodine5-29. Of these, bromine and chlorine look most promising. Iodine is quite expensive and sometimes forms an Insoluble film on a precious metal surface22,23. Little experimental work has been published on the relative performance of bromine versus chlorine. The Pourbaix diagrams for the halide leach system (see Fig. 1-4) Indicates a significant stability advantage for bromine In forming complex ions with gold. This should result In greater extraction of gold under similar leach conditions and Is evaluated In this work. The regeneration of halogen from a spent leech solution is a critical requirement for an environmentally acceptable halogen leach process. Bromide can be oxidized In-situ to bromine ~ adding chlorine or ozone2,31. Bromide like chloride can be oxidized In an electrochemical cell to produce halogen on demand 13,15,17. Bromine clearly offers a number of possible regeneration pathways. This work strives to compare the relative ability of chlorine and bromine to extract gold from partially and fully oxidized ores. A commercially pressure oxidized sample was evaluated under a number of experimental conditions. The autoclave feed ore from the same mill was also evaluated after complete oxidation In a laboratory autoclave.

In many mining operations, particularly northern open-pit mines, large seasonal variations in grinding slurry temperature can occur. It is shown in this paper that this temperature shift can cause a winter-time loss in autogenous grinding efficiency of as much as 20Y. if it is not controlled. Laboratory experimentation indicates that much of this effect is due to increases in slurry viscosity as the temperature is decreased. An additional effect may result from changes in rock strength upon freezing, for which possible mechanisms are discussed. However, no effect clearly resulting from rock strength changes has been definitely confirmed.

Since mercury is chemically similar to silver, it tends to dissolve along with the silver and gold during cyanide leaching. Ultimately mercury is recovered along with the silver as mercury/silver/gold amalgam which requires retorting to remove the mercury prior to refining the silver and gold. A possible approach to separating mercury from silver and gold in cyanide leach solutions is to take advantage of the replacement reaction between [Hg(CN)4]2- and Ag2S, which results in precipitation of mercury as HgS while dissolving silver as [Ag(CN)2]-. Results are presented demonstrating that mercury can be removed from cyanide solutions with high effectiveness, while, at the same time, recovering additional silver in solution. Initial experiments with static flasks in the laboratory showed a high degree of mercury removal could be achieved. Results using actual metallurgical plant products in bottle roll tests indicate the process works on a larger scale, but also results in significant gold losses if the solution being treated has high gold levels, such as carbon stripping pregnant eluent solution.

As openpit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in openpit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep openpit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high-latitude openpit mines, due to a phenomenon known as atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In openpit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around openpit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CfD) program. Two-dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

A standard procedure for determining size-specific gravity distributions of fine coal (including the -400 mesh fractions) by sieving and centrifugal sink-float separation is described. The significance of using a centrifugal sink-float technique and the effect of the magnitude of the centrifugal force on the separation of fine coal are confirmed in the present study. The relative merits of cumulative versus incremental sink-float are discussed. The procedure is evaluated quantitatively using data obtained for the products of froth flotation of -100 mesh coal.

The advent of open nit mining permitted the development and processing of minerals never before thought possible. New equipment was needed; new techniques were devised; new methods were called for. This development and acquisition of new techniques, methods and equipment did not, however, stir the souls of our industry and educational leaders sufficiently to a recognition of the problem of people, especially the future development of the people needed in open-pit mining. The people problem has been and will be with us as long as there are two of them. The development of people will be required for the same reason. The problem of developing future personnel for open-pit mining is not what must be developed; that is known to all of us and can be briefly stated ashore and better of everything." As I see it, the real problem lies in determining (1) what personnel are really critical, (2) why are they critical and (3) how can we develop them.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favoured for this service due to the low capital and operating cost of the equipment, as well as improved metallurgical performance when compared to conventional flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of column flotation and discusses some important aspects of circuit design.
