Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. A PC image-based on-line coarse particle size analyzer has been developed to measure particle size distributions under plant situations where overlapped particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Although previous testing had shown satisfactory performance of this image-based system for separated particle size measurements (the non-overlapped case), it was necessary to modify original algorithms in order to solve the overlap problem and make the system suitable for plant operations. On-site testing has been conducted at a large copper concentrator in the southwestern U.S. for further investigation of the overlap problem.

The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because "whole diesel exhaust" is regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen" by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants; CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2' and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines using diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality.

Research activities performed by Cleveland-Cliffs Research and Hibbing Taconite plant personnel during the last decade have resulted in the development of an improved autogenous mill grinding circuit. Minus one (1) inch autogenous mill trommel oversize material, con-sidered to be a critical size, is magnetically cobbed and then crushed to 100% minus 3/8" prior to reentry into the feed end of the mill. Autogenous mill capacity increases, up to 25%, have been measured in pilot plant tests using this approach and are also anticipated for the Hibbing Taconite concentrator which presently has reached a 15.5% improvement.

To reduce the environmental footprint of hydrometallurgical processing of black mass from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a green leaching system based on glycine and sodium metabisulfite (Gly-SMS) was proposed. The leaching study demonstrated that the highest cobalt and lithium recoveries of 100 percent and 99.8 percent were achieved under optimal conditions. The leaching mechanism revealed that the dissolution of LiCoO2 in the Gly-SMS solution followed the shrinking core model. The apparent activation energies for cobalt and lithium were determined as 48.05 and 41.51 kJ/mol, respectively, indicating a surface chemical reaction controlling mechanism. The leachate was then processed by an acidification- precipitation technique with oxalic acid as the precipitant to remove cobalt. Glycine complexes with metal ions by zwitterionic ligand and recycles in the leaching-precipitation circuit, reducing the reagent cost. Compared to other studies, this leaching system has near-neutral operating conditions and is cost-effective, making it an economically viable alternative for treating cathode materials from spent LIBs.

In order to understand the flotation kinetic behavior of coal and associated mineral matter, a detailed investigation was conducted in a 2-liter Denver flotation cell using three high sulfur coals at three feed sizes, minus 28. 100 and 200 mesh. Subsequently. the flotation products were sieved into different size fractions and analyzed for their ash and pyritic sulfur content in order to delineate the effect of particle size on the rate at which each constituent floats. The results were tested with several different flotation kinetic models and the best model for coal was then chosen. The flotation rate constant and the ultimate recovery calculated from a kinetic model were used to delineate the effect of particle size, collector (dodecane) and frother (MIBC) dosages on the flotation kinetics of coal, ash and pyrite.

"Composite sprayed concrete lining (SCL), consisting of two layers of permanent sprayed concrete separated by a layer of spray-applied waterproofing membrane, represents the latest development in SCL tunneling, but presents several challenges to designers. This paper aims to address the following issues: (1) how to simulate composite action, (2) behavior of a composite SCL tunnel, and (3) how to utilize composite action to achieve lining thickness efficiency. It firstly sets out the background to the composite SCL concept, and then presents a strategy for numerical investigation. The main part of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the simulation results, focusing on the lining deformation, load sharing and the safety margin of both linings. Interface stresses are also examined. It is found that significant secondary lining thickness reduction may be achieved by utilizing composite action. Challenges for the design of composite SCL tunnels are briefly discussed at the end. INTRODUCTION Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnelling has seen rapid development over the last twenty years in the UK (Su 2013). One of these developments has been the replacement of traditional sheet membrane and cast in situ secondary lining with innovative spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining system, which has been adopted in recent major projects, such as Crossrail (Pickett 2013), and brings many benefits to the construction (Dimmock et al. 2013). The combination of sprayed primary lining, spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining is perceived to provide a structurally efficient lining system that outperforms the traditional lining system, which consists of sacrificial primary lining, sheet waterproofing membrane and cast in situ secondary lining. The claimed benefits in structural performance arises from the composite action between the sprayed primary and secondary linings via the spray applied waterproofing membrane, which produces a much stiffer cross-section and therefore a more efficient use of materials. Early investigations on the design of composite SCL tunnels were carried out without (1) definite and reliable long-term interface parameters, (2) a verified numerical modelling technique, or (3) consideration of different stress histories between primary and secondary linings (Thomas and Pickett 2011, Marcher et al. 2011). This paper reports the findings from a numerical parametric study on a typical composite SCL tunnel with varied secondary lining thickness. The results show that the true benefit of composite lining arises from the optimisation of the lining thickness (stiffness) ratio between the primary and secondary linings to achieve secondary lining safety and thickness efficiency at the same time."

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a combined tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) respirable dust monitor and cap lamp, configured to have dimensions and weight similar to those of a lead-acid miner’s cap lamp battery. The Higgins-Dewell (HD) cyclone design operated at 2.2 L min-1 airflow has previously been reported to have low bias relative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) convention. Previous reports have described the PDM as meeting the NIOSH Accuracy Criterion. In order to avoid certain analysis anomalies encountered during these evaluations, a different method of establishing the PDM relative standard deviation was employed. Re-analysis of laboratory data for both the early prototype and precommercial PDMs indicates that the PDM still meets the NIOSH accuracy criterion, and that the precommercial PDMs are more accurate than previously reported.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

The business of heap leaching requires accurate forecasting of metal production from the heaps. Business forecasts typically follow a format that project periodic (monthly, quarterly, or annual) product shipments based on anticipated operating results, e. g., tons of ore placed, grade of ore, and rate of leach extraction. Since revenue and cash flow are dependent on the metal production stream, forecasts of metal production are very important for project evaluation and business planning purposes. Nevertheless, production forecasts, particularly for new heap leach projects, have been prone to errors. The present paper identifies some of the pitfalls that would be encountered in preparing production forecasts for new heap leach operations and provides a checklist of considerations to assist in preparing a forecast. Also, the paper presents a case study of copper production forecasting used for the Sanchez Project, a heap leach operation located near Safford, Arizona, that is presently under development by AZCO Mining, Inc.

The use of chemical reagents in flotation has been studied in great detail, e.g. (1, 2, 3, 4). Important progress has been made on the understanding of surface chemistry concepts involved in flotation. However, such scientific studies are often very complex even for rather simple idealized systems. Therefore, the deve- lopment of predictive or quantitative tools for plant engineering evaluation is still in the evolutionary stages. Until further progress in fundamental work is achieved, the operating engineer is faced with semi-empirical physical testing of reagent changes on several sizes of the actual equipment under study to be confident of the economic viability of any change.

Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, operates an 86,000 STPD copper-molybdenum concentrator near Tucson, Arizona. Shortly after production commenced in February, 1970, it became apparent that the reduction crushing system represented a limitation to reaching the design capacity of 72,000 STPD. The development work performed on the reduction crushers in order to first meet design capacity, and to subsequently increase production to 86,000 STPD is described in this paper. The Sierrita plant is a conventional three stage crushing sys- tem. All crushers were supplied by the Allis-Chalmers Corporation and consist of two 58 x 89 Superior gyratories, four 138b EHD hydrocones, and ten 384 hydrocones. Screening is performed prior to and subsequent to secondary crushing and in closed circuit with the tertiary crushers. Typical throughput rates and equipment sizes are presented in Figure No. 1.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.
