A new pillar strength formula is presented, incorporating a function P of size and shape, which takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive-strength test results as function of P clearly reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

The stability and integrity of protective coal pillars between the longwall working face and development roadways are greatly affected by the mining activities such as the development face advancing or retreat mining. Due to underground strata pressure, the coal pillar cracks could be further developed and then the air leakage passages (mainly cracks) could be produced greatly. The air circulation caused by the atmospheric pressure difference between the two sides of the coal pillar may also provide suitable conditions for the possible spontaneous combustion of the residual coal in the mine gob. In this paper, a typical the protective coal pillar in a Chinese coal mine is studied. The deformation and stress of coal pillars during the mining process of longwall working face are simulated by using FLAC3D. The displacement and strain of coal pillars are analyzed. Two indexes, the linear fracture rate (LFR) and area fracture rate (AFR), are introduced to characterize the development of internal cracks’ development within coal pillars. By using field measurement, the air leakage intensity distribution due to coal pillar cracks is obtained; the equation of air leakage resistance of coal pillar under the influence of mining is derived. Then, the possible location of large air leakage of coal pillar is determined, which can be used as guidelines to study the possibilities of coal spontaneous combustions happening in pillar or mine gob. The research results help to control such potential hazards in advance.

Respirable dust poses long-term health issues to personnel working in mining and civil projects where mechanized mining and tunneling machines are used for hard rock excavation. Machines, such as longwall shearers, roadheaders, or continuous miners, use consumable picks to cut rock. However, rock dust is generated in the work environment each time the pick tip contacts the rock surface. Additionally, the generated dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production, such as at transfer points. The purpose of this study is to characterize respirable dust particles generated at the pick tip at two stages of pick wear: new and moderately worn. Understanding dust characteristics in terms of concentration, size distribution, and particle shape throughout the life-cycle of the pick will provide a basis to mine and tunnel operators for changing out picks to mitigate dust generation at the source. This paper discusses the dust characteristics generated from preliminary full-scale cutting tests in a laboratory of an igneous rock block cut with conical picks at new and moderately worn levels of wear. The moderately worn pick generated a size distribution that favored smaller particle sizes compared to the new pick. The moderately worn pick also generated more overall dust, as the concentration level in mg/m3 was over double the amount of the new pick. Lastly, both picks generated particles that had similar aspect ratios and roundness measures.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.

Molybdenite is the world’s principal source of rhenium (Re), a critical element in multiple high-tech applications. However, the Re contents in molybdenite vary by orders of magnitude on scales ranging from single grains to whole deposits. In order to better understand the systematics of this variation and what geochemical factors control molybdenite Re concentration, and hence overall Re resources, we examine global patterns in molybdenite Re contents through a compilation of > 3000 measurements of Re in molybdenite from > 700 mainly ore-bearing moderate- to high-temperature hydrothermal systems of different types. Our results are similar to but expand on those of earlier studies. Rhenium concentration in molybdenite has a lognormal distribution and varies systematically with type of geologic system, intrusive lithology, and Mo grade. The lowest-Re molybdenite occurs in greisens (geometric mean 1 ppm ± a multiplicative standard deviation of 9), quartz vein-hosted W-Sn deposits (2 ± 5 ppm), unmineralized granites and granodiorites (12 ± 8 ppm), intrusion-related deposits (24 ± 8 ppm), and porphyry W-Sn deposits (16 ± 11 ppm). Rhenium is most enriched in molybdenites from volcanic sublimates (23,800 ± 5 ppm), with skarn Fe and Au (560 ± 5 ppm and 540 ± 3 ppm respectively) and porphyry Cu and Cu-Au deposits next (470 ± 4 and 430 ± 7 ppm respectively). Among porphyries, skarns, and quartz vein-hosted deposits, Re is most highly concentrated in molybdenites from Cu and Au systems and its concentration decreases systematically through Cu-Mo, Mo, Sn, and W deposits. In nearly all cases, molybdenites from systems associated with intermediate igneous rocks contain more Re than molybdenites from systems of the same type with more felsic rock associations. The disparity between Re contents of molybdenite in felsic and intermediate systems is largest for porphyries, quartz vein-hosted, and skarn deposits and is near zero for subeconomic or barren granite and granodiorite Mo systems; felsic intrusion-related deposits have slightly higher molybdenite Re than their equivalents associated with intermediate intrusions. In most systems, molybdenite Re content does not correlate with metal grade, but may have an inverse correlation with Au grade in intrusion-related deposits (based on a small number of data points) and does exhibit a strong inverse correlation with deposit Mo grade. Dilution of Re through larger amounts (higher deposit grades) of molybdenite explains about 40% of this correlation, but the relative enrichment of Re in molybdenite from low-Mo deposits must also reflect some selective enrichment of Re/Mo in porphyry Cu systems compared to porphyry Mo systems. We found no evidence for secular increase or other systematic temporal variation in molybdenite Re content. The data regarding the use of molybdenite Re content as a proxy for mantle influence are ambiguous. Nearly all observed empirical correlations can be traced back to differences in redox state and sulfide concentration, the two geochemical factors identified here and by previous experimental work as the controlling influences on Re mobility under hydrothermal conditions. Hydrothermal systems with reducing conditions (W- and Sn-rich) tend to have low molybdenite Re even though compiled whole-rock data indicate that their source rocks have as much or more Re as those of more oxidized systems (e.g., Cu-rich). Vapor-phase exsolution, crustal assimilation, and mixing with external fluids may all enrich molybdenite Re concentrations in individual deposits and deposit types, but their extent and importance in overall hydrothermal concentration of Re is uncertain. Thus, it appears that the available molybdenite Re resource in an ore deposit largely depends on how the deposit’s redox and sulfidation conditions have varied over time and space during the timespan of hydrothermal activity. Oxidized, high-sulfide conditions tend to concentrate Re in molybdenite, whereas reducing conditions tend to leave Re dispersed at low concentrations in the bulk rock.

"After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP, or black lung) in the United States has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of rapidly progressive disease such as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 U.S. coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85 percent) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17 percent) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84 percent) of the individuals in that study worked in Kentucky, West Virginia or Virginia, and 169 (88 percent) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern Kentucky. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, there has been some concern that these reports may overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression — such that effective interventions can be devised.The notable uptick in CWP and PMF rates among miners in central Appalachia has led to this region being called a hot spot for disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2017). While the geographic clustering has been well documented (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Wade et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2013), the root cause is still unknown. Leading hypotheses have focused on the relative amount of rock being cut along with coal in many central Appalachian mines, as there has been a tendency to mine increasingly thinner coal seams over the past couple of decades (Laney et al., 2010; Schatzel, 2009). This shift has likely been accompanied by changes in specific dust exposure factors, such as increased abundance of particularly harmful dust constituents (e.g., silica or silicates) or increased frequency of harmful exposures (e.g., due to work in more risky environments) (Pollock et al., 2010; Blackley et al., 2016; Cohen et al., 2016; Douglas et al., 1986)."

"The effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. The effect of applied potentials and electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was assessed. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and biocatalysis of anodic oxidation. IntroductionIn recent years, the bioleaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores as well as their flotation concentrates has been receiving increased attention. Use of mesophilic bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite does not yield desirable copper extraction rates due to its easy passivation.Bioleaching of chalcopyrite using A. ferrooxidans has been reported to be very inefficient, and use of thermophilic bacteria at higher temperatures is recommended to improve its bioleaching rates. Bioleaching under imposed applied DC potentials or currents has been shown to enhance not only bioleaching kinetics but also to confer selectivity in mineral dissolution (Abhakumari, 1996; Chirpa Selvi and Natarajan, 1998; Natarajan, 1992a, b,c). Electrochemical principles governing electrobioleaching have been earlier illustrated (Jyothi et.al, 1989). The role of applied potentials on the activity and growth of A. ferrooxidans has also been studied (Natarajan, 1992b). Also, the electrochemical aspects of bioleaching of several sulfide minerals when present alone or in binary and ternary combinations have been reported (Jyothi et al., 1989). The electroleaching of copper-nickel concentrate (Natarajan et al., 1985) and electrobioleaching of sphalerite concentrates have already been studied (Selvi et al.,1998). However, it is possible to enhance the bioleaching rate of chalcopyrite in the presence of A. ferrooxidans under galvanic conditions in the presence of nobler minerals such as pyrite (Jyothi et al.,1989). Also, dissolution of chalcopyrite can be significantly enhanced under applied potential conditions. Ali Ahmadi and his coworkers recently studied the electrochemical bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrates using moderate thermophiles (Ahmadi et al., 2010, 2011)."

Several hydrometallurgical leach processes have been recently proposed for the recovery of copper from copper concentrates. These include the Cymet Process of Cypress Metallurgical Processes Corporation, the Arbiter Process of the Anaconda Company, and the Treadwell Process of Treadwell Engineering company(1). These processes and similar processes for recovery of other minerals, have several phenomenological similarities which make their quantitative description difficult at best. These include (a) the presence of more than one phase, (b) non-uniform mineralization of the feed concentrate, (c) surface and diffusional effects, and (d) a particle size distribution which varies with time. Semi-theoretical, rather than purely empirical, treatment of such processes in their developmental stages will result in a better understanding of the physico-chemical mechanisms in effect. This, in turn, will allow reliable process designs to be made on reasonable time scales for reasonable development costs. Once a production unit is built, such an approach will provide straightforward methods for process control and optimization. A research and development effort to determine criteria and procedures for semi- theoretically characterizing such mineral leach recovery processes has been initiated in a joint venture by the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the College of Mines at the University of Arizona. This group has as its task the mathematical characterization of hydrometallurgical leach recovery processes using semi- theoretical mechanisms for the underlying phenomena. The resulting models are experimentally verified and parameterized on the laboratory scale in such a way that they can be utilized with similarity criteria to provide reliable scaleup to production designs. This discussion will be centered around the elements of such an approach and how they fit together.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and 'results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

INITIAL PRECONDITIONS To solve tile problem of using the potential reserves of the different coal ranks efficiently (the coal reserves being many times superior in quantity to those of natural gas and oil) one must realise an integrated estimation of the coalfields' and coal deposits' reserves. The actuality of this problem increased especially in the recent years, when the Russian coal industry is being restructured. A structural reorgaisation of this industry, in order to in- crease its efficiency, covers a large spectrum of social and economic problems, comprising a withdrawal from mining the coal reserves that are unsafe from the standpoint of economy and labour protection. According to the information supplied by the 'Rossoogol' company, the Russian coal industry, accounting for abut a fifth of the world coal reserves, has a rather unsafe resource base, for about 5% of the reserves involved in mining do not correspond to the world practice conditions, regarding the coal grade, thickness, geological conditions, proneness to coal and gas outburst hazards. These concern first of all the Moscow, Kizelovsk and Donetsk coal basins, the Prokopievsk-Kiselevsk district of the Kuzbas basin and several other coalfields. Thus, the problem of efficient potential coal reserves' utilization calls for a paramount solution of two basic problems, namely: a) a comparative coalfields' and sections evaluation, and their ranging, in accordance with their industrial importance; b) choosing the 'active' reserves good to be efficiently mined under the present-day conditions. PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION The investigations that had been carried out make it possible to formulate the following basic principles of the coalfields' reserves' estimation (or assessment). 1. The necessity, possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation are determined by a set of natural, technical, technological, practical, economic, environmental and social factors, thus calling for an integrated and gradual approach to problem solving. 2. One cannot consider the results of same reserves' estimation as being invariable because the former depend both upon constant (mainly natural) and market demands for different grades of coal (those of different power engineering and technological situations), capital investments, material and labour resources, economic (price-forming), technical, technological, environmental and other factors. 3. The rational size and sequence of the operating mines' and reserve sections' resources' involvement into mining depend upon the final aim of posing the problem, whose variants may be (the corresponding limitations being considered) providing for a maximum run-of-mine output (these essentially featuring the past stages of the industry's evolution); providing for a maximum efficiency, measured possibly by the specific or absolute indices of profits an expenses, labour productivity e. al. ; providing for a maximum extraction (maximum integrate utilization) of the known reserves. In this case an important park goes to the economic evaluation (or assessment) of useful application of the by-products being extracted (methane, mine water, rack) compared to the expenses necessary for their utilization. Regarding the steam coal (posing the problem any way it be possible), and extreme limit to the absolute non-efficiency of the coal reserves' exploitation may be posed, using the proportion of energy obtained from the possible amount of the coal to be extracted to the energy consumption necessary to extract, prepare, haul and consume this amount of coal. 4. The most reliable and efficient solutions providing for opening the reserves can be obtained for group of mines, rather than at the level of an individual mine section or an individual mine because it is only in the former case that the possibilities to re- distribute the expenses necessary to develop the good for mining and worse sections and seams can be realized to the greatest extent. Therefore the prospective approach to be considered is the one providing for an integrated organization and choice of the optimum combination of the variants of the ways to use the mines in operation and the free sections of the region in order to satisfy the growing up requirements for coal rather than the one providing for individual mine sections' resources' evaluation. 5. The future possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation will depend upon the prospects to implant at the mines in operation and reserve sections new engineering and technological elements and coal extraction technologies which may essentially change the actual idea concerning the coal reserves worth of being developed in an efficient way. An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes models of fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. it is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

The advent of inexpensive computers has opened vast opportunities for improved planning and control of capital projects. The mining and mineral processing industries have welcomed the opportunity, and new and improved quantitative management techniques have abounded. This chapter will discuss commonly used computer applications for economic justification of the project, preparation of the cost estimate, planning the work schedule, monitoring work progress, and control of costs and productivity. Finally, there is a review of the degree to which the industry uses these applications. Our experience suggests that while we in the industry have been quick to adopt the new techniques, the quality of our input data has not always kept pace. During the next decade, our push should be toward improving the quality of the basic data and assumptions so that we can fully benefit from the sophisticated techniques. The GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) principle is a wellworn cliche, but it is especially valid here. One of the keys to getting good input is commitment. Unless the managers who are to use or benefit from the system are committed to it, the effort will fail. They must be com- mitted to the underlying principles of planning and control sufficiently to expend their time and resources on them; planning should be especially given emphasis. They can't be too busy to plan.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district, there are seven major deposits: Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the sub-district are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont property.

The concept of using powdered coal-in-oil-mixtures (COM) as a composite fuel to conserve oil resources and relieve import supply problems is being vigorously promoted by the Department of Energy via the sponsoring of various demonstration units (1). The idea of COM as a useful alternative fuel has been explored on and off for over 100 years (2). The approach must be capable of grinding, mixing, storing, and combusting COM with presumably only minor equipment changes on oil-fired boilers. DOE estimates that 56 000 m3 of oil (350 000 barrels) could be spared daily if a 50-50 COM was used to generate electricity. Of course, the ability of COM suppliers to prepare and deliver a stable suspension of COM at reasonable economic costs must be achieved if the concept is to be successful. This report reviews the various methods used to attain stable coal-oil mixtures. Various physical-chemical principles associated with each method of stabilization are also discussed.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV).
