Researchers from the U.S. Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members (the captain and both gasmen). Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. A new polyhalite fertilizer mine is currently being developed in the UK by Anglo American Crop Nutrients. The project includes the construction of a Mineral Transport Tunnel almost 37 kms long to house a conveyor belt that will move polyhalite from the production shaft at the mine to a materials handling facility at the port. The project sets a new standard in terms of an ultra-long tunnel drive and sustainable, environmentally friendly and efcient material transport. The paper highlights in particular the . m diameter TBM in use for the construction of the ultra-long tunnelling section.

Coal mined-out areas have a significant impact on mining safety and affect the pressure distributions of neighboring coal faces. The PFC3D software is used to study the goaf mechanical characteristics, and the core loading test verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The results from the numerical modeling showed that the void ratio, particle size ratio, and particle size distribution of the rock particle sample (RPS) had a significantly remarkable influence on the compression deformation characteristics of the rock block. The parallel-bond tensile strength and parallel-bond cohesion had a notable impact on the compression deformation traits of the rock block only when the axial stress level was lower than 12 MPa. By contrast, when the axial stress exceeded 5 MPa, the effective modulus significantly influenced the compression deformation features. However, the stiffness ratio, loading rate, and parallel-bond friction angle had almost no effect on the compression deformation characteristics. Furthermore, when the stress level was less than 10 MPa, the stress–strain curves from the rock core samples’ numerical simulation and loading tests were approximately linear. In addition, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the stress–strain curves suggest that the goaf zone’s core numerical simulation results had a robust correlation with the loading test results. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for the field application of PFC3D software and safety assessments in goaves.

A combined size reduction- liberation model of grinding has been developed to predict the product size distribution for both free and locked particles. The model is an extension of the population balance model for size reduction. Locked (or composite) particles have been subdivided into discrete classes of different compositions to obtain more detailed information. The model has been tested on a sphalerite ore from Tennessee. Liberation data have been obtained using an areal scanning technique on microscope images of polished particle mounts.

In the ultrafine coal cleaning process, small coal particles (-400 mesh) are produced during the pulverizing operation. After the coal cleaning process, these ultrafine particles are very difficult to dewater, and create problems in coal transportation, storage and handling at utility plants. Research work on ultrafine coal dewatering and briquetting has resulted in the development of a single stage operation that is potentially more effective and economic than conventional thermal drying and briquetting processes. The final coal product have a moisture content of less than 15% and possess high strength and water resistance that satisfies coal transportation, storage and handling requirements.

The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. The latest resource estimate for the Caspiche gold/silver/copper project in the Maricunga region of Chile was released by gold explorer Exeter Resource Corp. The resource is low grade, but bulk minable and drilling to date has shown a NI 43-101 compliant inferred resource of 1,117 Mt (1.23 billion st) grading 0.55 g/t (0.016 oz/st) gold, 3.81 g/t (0.111 oz/st) silver and 0.22 percent copper. Exeter said these findings make the in situ metals amounts of 609 t (19.6 million oz) of gold, 4.4 kt (137 million oz) of silver and 4.84 billion lbs of copper, which the company relates as 33.7 million gold equivalent ounces using assumed metal prices of $23.33/g ($800/oz) for gold, 35 cents/g ($12/oz) for silver and $2/lb for copper. The deposit is almost midway between Barrick?s Cerro Casale gold deposit and Kinross? Refugio Mine. In a statement Exeter chairman Yale Simpson said ?This updated resource estimate places Caspiche firmly among the world?s largest gold-copper discoveries in recent years and clearly supports our decision to aggressively drill the property, despite the global economic decline. ?We expect that the very substantial copper and silver credits will be extremely important, and will markedly impact the potential viability of Caspiche. Specifically, using metal prices of US$2/lb copper, $23.33/g ($800/oz) gold and 35 cents/g ($12/oz) silver, the 4.84 billion lbs of copper and 4.2 kt (137 million oz) of silver are equivalent to 376 kt and 62 t (12.1 and 2 million oz) of gold, respectively. ?Our recent drilling has defined what appears to be a coherent higher grade central zone associated with a definable early stage diorite intrusion. We expect this zone will be important in developing various mining and economic models for the project,? Simpson said. Exeter is still drilling the deposit to expand the re-source estimate further to the southeast and at depth and to upgrade the higher grade central zone to the indicated category. Simpson said, ?Exeter intends to enhance the value of Caspiche by continuing to de-risk the project through ongoing exploration, metallurgy, engineering, water and environmental studies. These studies will continue through the next 12 months and will lead to a conceptual development study. A timeline for the release of that study is being formulated. The project budget for the next 12 months is C$14 million.? Mineweb reported that Caspiche is likely too big of a deposit and at too high of altitude for Exeter to handle alone. Exeter will be looking to other majors, or perhaps the Chinese, to help develop this huge orebody. But, in the meantime, it also has its high grade Cerro Moro deposit in Argentina, which could be brought to production relatively quickly and at relatively low cost.

"Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years. However, many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize, and even embrace, the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process.Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation, but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple orebody realizations to provide a thorough unbiased picture of the geologic uncertainty. However, most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter.Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this article presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid- to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The aim of this article is that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system, mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

There has been a recent revival of interest in concentrated coal/water slurries as a substi¬tute for fuel oil or for coal/oil mixtures, particularly in electric power generation. The idea is not a new one. Coal/water slurries were transported by pipeline in the U.S. in the early nineteen-sixties, and the Black Mesa coal pipeline has been in operation for several years, while in Germany, coal/water slurries were being burnt for power generation in the early nineteen-seventies, as described by Merten and Höner (1972). Since coal is not a pure substance but a carbonaceous mixture, the different chemical and physical behavior of coal/water dispersions from different deposits must be understood in order to optimize the properties of the result¬ing slurry fuels. Since minerals which are minor constituents of coal may also strongly affect slurry properties, coal chemistry may vary considerably even within a single deposit. Thus it is unlikely that there will be a single formula for optimizing the slurry properties of all coals, and even the answer for coal from a single source may change with time.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a wellrecognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulfide ores and concentrates. The pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores was first commercially applied in 1985, at Homestake Mining Company’s McLaughlin mine in the United States. Since that time numerous refractory gold and other high temperature pressure oxidation facilities have been built throughout the world. The design of each facility was met with unique challenges and opportunities which have led to an array of plant configurations, pressure oxidation autoclave sizes, and sulfide oxidation capacities. This paper presents a historical review of high temperature pressure oxidation operations and current projects in execution with a focus on the autoclave vessel design, circuit configuration, and unit sulfide oxidation capacity as a basis for characterization and comparison.

Approximately 40 concentrators throughout the world have successfully adopted computer control for flotation circuit operation since 1969. Successful use of flotation control, gaining up to 2% efficiencies, has largely derived from effective employment of on-stream slurry analyzers and integration of key measurement data through digital processors. Requirements for reliable measurement have also led to improved functional reliability in magnetic flow meters, pH, reagent feed, and other key elements. Methods used in computer control of flotation will be reviewed and variations in operating philosophies will be described with reference to the approaches taken to flotation automation.

The U.S. Department of Energy has undertaken, in a cost sharing partnership with industry and utilities, an extensive coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion program in a number of promising applications. One of these is the injection of COM through tuyeres into a blast furnace in lieu of oil. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing oil, fired facilities. The issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: 1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable operation, and 2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically.

Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are estimated using friction factors and shock loss factors. The efficient planning and designing ofmine ventilation systems depend on the accuracy of the friction factors as well as the shock loss factors that are taken into consideration. While there is a much more acceptable knowledge of what constitutes friction loss in mine roadways, the shock loss factors are in general readily not available for all possible contexts of flow separation phenomena in mines. One such special case of shock loss in mines is the train of mine cars in the airway. Mine cars are widely used for the transportation of material, and the information on shock loss factor for mine cars is limited. This paper examines the pressure loss occurring due to a train of mine cars in an airway using scale model studies and numerical investigations. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies are conducted using four different turbulence models. The performance of different turbulence models is analyzed by comparing it with the experimental results. The study suggests that the boundary layer resolution method is significant in the simulation of shock loss. From the study, it is found that the shock loss factors from presently available model overestimate the pressure loss by 7 to 15 times. A better prediction model for the shock loss factor of a train of mine cars in the airway is proposed using the experimental results.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE).
