Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 μm (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM10 level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine.

Highly variable milling properties within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corporation in Nevada made it necessary to estimate the copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. The estimation was made by first determining the relationships between the desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology (i.e. copper mineral type, rock type and copper grade). This relationship was then combined with the already estimated rock type, mineral type and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict the milling properties.

Since the late 60's, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70's. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

"The Soudan Mine was Minnesota’s first iron mine, operating from 1882 to 1962. The mine was donated to the State of Minnesota in 1963 and became a state park in 1965. The mine discharge contains elevated copper and cobalt concentrations and has been treated with an ion-exchange-resin-based system since 2009. The system includes flow equalization tanks, bag and cartridge filters, a carbon tank and two commercial ion exchange tanks. Although effective, the system’s high cost, inefficient removal of suspended material and substantial maintenance have been ongoing and troublesome issues.In November 2012, we initiated a pilot test using a peat-based sorption media. This media is produced from raw reed-sedge peat through a patented, low-temperature carbonization process that produces a hardened granular sorption material. The granules are uniform, have high hydraulic conductivity and maintain the high metal affinity of natural peat.Mine water was pumped through the peat-based sorption media without any pretreatment. Copper input concentrations typically ranged from 30 to 60 µg/L but increased to a high of 364 µg/L in the summer of 2013. Since startup, more than 60 million L (16 million gal or 32,000 bed volumes) have been treated, with average removal rates of 75 percent for particulate copper and 60 percent for dissolved copper. Backwash is required at about 4,000 bed volumes, but with a combination of air sparging and high-flow backwash, the suspended material is removedfrom the media.One tank of the peat-based sorption media was found to remove copper similarly to the first four components of the existing system. By reducing size and complexity, reductions in operation and maintenance costs are possible. A comparison of the estimated costs indicate that replacing the four initial components with the single media tank has the potential to reduce annual operating costs by more than half from around $163,000 to $70,000."

As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. Pillar stability continues to be a significant concern in multiple-level mining conditions, particularly for deep mines when pillars are not stacked or the thickness of interburden between mining levels is thin. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to investigate the stability of pillars in multiple-level limestone mines. In this study, FLAC3D models were created to investigate the effect of interburden thickness, the degree of pillar offset between mining levels, and in situ stress conditions on pillar stability at various depths of cover. The FLAC3D models were validated through in situ monitoring that was conducted at a multiple-level stone mine. The critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between the mining levels on top-level pillar stability was explored, where the top level mine was developed first followed by the bottom level mine. The model results showed that there is an interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of pillars in multiple- level conditions. A combination of these factors may lead to various degrees of pillar instabilities. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurred when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70%. On the contrary, the highest degree of stability occurs when the pillars are stacked, the underlying assumption is that the interburden between mining levels is elastic (never fails). Generally, for depths of cover investigated in this study, the stability of top-level pillars shallower than 100 m (328 ft) or with interburden thicknesses greater than 1.33 times the roof span—16 m (52.4 ft) in this study—does not appear significantly impacted by pillar offset. The results of this study improve understanding of multiple-level interactions and advances the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of pillar instability in underground stone mines.

Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in facilities with the ability to ship over 30 million tons of iron ore per year by early 1973. Confidence in such rapid future growth was evidenced by careful planning for the future expansion of those facilities provided for initial operation of the project which first shipped ore on 1 April 1969. Ore sales contracts totaling more than 300 million tons have been negotiated, thus justifying the optimism which led the joint venturers to provide over $200 million in initial investment and a like amount in capital required to finance the continuing expansion program. Members of the Mt. The multiple-criteria decision analysis is a technique that helps to find an optimal solution by evaluating conflicting criteria. In this study, an approach to perform multiple-criteria decision analysis for cut-off grade optimization, which considers the diverse stakeholder groups prevalent in the mining industry, is presented. The optimization model developed in this approach links the resource block model to the financial model, enabling the process to either maximize profit, net present value, revenue to the State, or extend the mine's life. To identify the optimal cut-off grade in each case, the Excel Solver function is utilized. Although it has limitations, the Solver function can still be modified to handle models with thousands of block values for determining input variables based on the target value. Following stakeholder engagement and dialogue, a single weighted average cut-off grade can then be determined. This approach is demonstrated for nine South African Witwatersrand gold mines.

This paper discusses the utilization of automation to increase productivity of continuous miners. Automation techniques are used during the design stage to decrease the time required and ensure the accuracy of the design. This is followed by automated manufacturing processes to reduce manufacturing time and improve the quality and consistency of parts. Combined, the result is a more reliable machine which can provide ongoing production capability. With the use of automation to enhance operator effectiveness and monitoring machine condition the productivity of machines is also improved.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.

The last time Mining Engineering presented an issue with a special focus on Canadian Mining (ME, August 2008 pp. 28 to 40) things were going well. A feature story took a look at Xstrata?s Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury and the booming Canadian oil sands were discussed at length. Potash prices were soaring, large diamonds were being found and British Columbia was launching plans to find more workers. How things have changed in six short months. What began as a mortgage crisis grew into a credit crisis, then mutated into a financial crisis, that has taken its toll on the value of bonds, loans, stocks, real estate and commodities. Miners that were flying high on unprecedented commodity prices six months ago have begun scaling back with delays, shut downs and layoffs as they struggle to survive this most recent economic downturn.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.

When the original water-only cyclone patents were established in the 1950?s, the supplies of low cost oil and natural gas were abundant and low selling prices for metallurgical and steam coal provided little incentive for developing more sophisticated coal cleaning systems. Bituminous coal sold for less than $5.00 per ton, and in this period many domestic coal producers discarded to the slurry pond the coal finer than 0.5-mm. For many producers, the selling price would not permit the recovery of the capital and operating costs required for dewatering and drying the fine coal. Water-only Cyclones Clean Fine Metallurgical Coal The first broad interest in the water-only cyclone became evident in the mid- 19601s, and though some work was done on coarser coals, investigators were particularly interested in cleaning coal finer than 0.5-mm. Flotation was the only fine coal cleaning method that was broadly accepted, but short-comings were recognized and investigators were looking for an effective fine coal cleaning device or system. Because of the greater market value and the need for reducing pyritic sulfur in metallurgical coals, much of the development work of the 1960's was done on coking coals.

This project will expand sanitary sewer within the City of Columbus. It consists of 2.5 mile long, 72-inch finished diameter pipe grouted inside 10.8-foot diameter tunnel excavation in shale. This paper describes the multi-faceted geotechnical exploration to minimize the underground risks. The tunnel will cross below a buried valley with minimum cover of highly weathered rock. The risk mitigation to cross the valley includes contingencies and cost allowances. Provisions to prevent impact on adjacent groundwater resources will be described. Latest construction updates will be provided including contractor alternate shaft support and pre-excavation probing to mitigate tunneling risk below the valley.

Believe it or not, mine evaluation and feasibility studies are as old as the industry itself. In the first recorded writing on mining by Agricola (1556), he gave several clues as what to look for in evaluating a mine, to determine if it was economically feasible. Below is the guidance from Agricola, with my interpretation of what he would include today. Now a miner, before he begins to mine the orebodies must consider seven things, namely: ? The situation (the geography/topography). ? The conditions (the geologic/mineralogic and mining conditions). ? The water (availability, hydrology and ownership). ? The roads (plus the railroads, power lines, all other infrastructure). ? The climate (the weather-rainfall/environment). ? The right of ownership (the land and legal entitlement). ? The neighbors (the social environmental concerns of the area). It is amazing how much of his guidance has not changed in 455 years. Yet Agricola gives no guidance on determining the correct cost, or determining the correct commodity pricing. But he does give a few words of caution on the related ethics involved on buying mineral properties: ?A prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him.? Three hundred years later (1866), to further amplify this point, in the most famous thing that Mark Twain never said, as an introduction to a lecturer to an audience of gold-miners at Red Dog, CA, the famed author/humorist allegedly described a mine as ?a hole in the ground owned by a liar? (Farrar & Rinehart, 1935). So, one might conclude that between these two dates, the mining industry did little to improve its reputation. Unfortunately, since Mark Twain allegedly made those remarks, we have not done near enough to gain accountability for the mineral industry.

The Cannon mine, located in north-central Washington is mining gold hosted in silicified Eocene-age arkosic sediments arrayed along a regional strike-slip fault system. Branches of the Eagle Creek fault have broken the Chumstick Formation into blocks and wedges, and have caused intense deformation of stratigraphy in the mine. Mineralization at the Cannon mine (B-Reef) and O-Reef (L-O mine) is a bulk silicification with high grade cross-cutting veins containing principally electrum, silver sulfosalts and pyrite in a gangue of quartz, adularia and calcite. Orebodies have very irregular shapes, but tend to follow stratigraphy and high-angle pre-mineral fault breccias and splays developed adjacent to the major faults. Both B-Reef and O-Reef occur at significant bends in the regional trend of major fault strands. Mean gold grades decrease upward from near sea level to the 300 m elevation at the Cannon mine. A new discovery, the A-Reef is hosted by a moderately dipping structure which is at a low angle to bedding. Fluid inclusion studies of B-Reef ore zones indicate dilute ore-bearing fluids boiled at temperatures between 185 and 2850 C at a depth of 1 km. Many ore zones are bounded by sheared mudstone and claystone and a much broader halo of argillic alteration comprising illite, smectite and sericite. Trace and major element analysis by ICP-ES for 33 elements, LECO for S, Hg by CVAA and gold by AA-FA shows dispersion patterns hundreds of meters outward from the known orebodies in the Cannon mine. Geometric mean comparisons, hierarchical R-mode cluster analysis and single element spatial plots show that Hg, As, Sb, S and K/Al compose a suite of elements which are significantly dispersed away from, and increase toward mineralization. Ba, Ca, Na, Mn, V and Zr decrease toward mineralization. The suite is more selective than gold with respect to known mineralization within the exploration area.
