In June 1998, the world's largest grinding mill, the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter 20 MW Cadia gearless SAG mill, was commissioned. This was a leap of over40% above the largest operating SAG mill. A significant saving in capital cost gave the incentive necessary for a single mill line at Cadia, resulting in the selection of the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter mill. Now, after 18 months of operation, this paper will review the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation, and operation of this mill.

Typically, rougher molybdenite flotation and recovery from bulk copper/ molybdenum concentrates involves the use of alkalisulfides, Nokes reagents, cyanides, oxidants, and/or thermal treatment for the depression of copper sulfide minerals. The bulk copper/molybdenum feed generally varies from 0.2% Mo to 1.0% Mo, and with traditional reagents the single-stage rougher flotation recovery of molybdenite varies between 40 and 90% at a concentrate grade of 5 to 10% Mo. With ozone conditioning for copper depression, however, improved separations appear to be possible, as demonstrated by tests with Cu/Me concentrates from both the Phelps Dodge Morenci Operations and the Kennecott Copperton Operations. Single-stage rougher flotation after ozone conditioning can provide a molybdenum concentrate at a recovery of more than 90% and a rougher concentrate grade higher than 20% Mo in some cases. Subsequent cleaner flotation with additional ozone conditioning results in relatively copper-free molybdenum concentrates containing as much as 52% Mo. Preliminary analysis indicates that, with a multistage ozone conditioning/flotation strategy, the process is technically and economically viable and should be suitable for industrial application.

There will be 3 billion people moving into cities by 2050. Permitting is both the biggest obstacle and the biggest opportunity for mining. The problem is not if we have the right minerals, but how we can permit and produce it in a ?Sustainable? manner. A ?Permit? and a ?Sustainable Development Plan? may soon be the same thing. How do we produce the minerals we need with: 1. The lowest possible carbon footprint. 2. Social license from community outreach by being a catalyst and not a problem in a ?Green World.? 3. Enhanced water supply during all stages of production. 4. Meeting requirements of our customers for service, quality, & cost. How important is it to have a complete ?Sustainable Development Program?? First, no plan is complete!!! It is a work in progress subject to continuous improvement. We need to work together to get the results we want. The goal of the world communities is to become carbon neutral by 2050. What is the mining community?s goal? Do we have one???? When a Clorox, Colgate Palmolive, Wal-Mart, Toyota, or Caterpillar buys a product, what are your chances of getting an order without a good program in place? The answer is it will be difficult or impossible shortly and you will be requiring the same thing with your suppliers. This is an opportunity if you are in the lead and it soon will be a necessity for most mining and processing companies requiring much extra effort to catch up. For some mines it was a necessity to get most of the SD plan to get permitted. The number of companies in the extractive industries with a full Sustainable Development Programs is expanding rapidly as shareholder demands for transparency continue to grow.

Laboratory and small-scale continuous pilot-plant investigations made at the Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that the copper segregation process is applicable to the treatment of oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores regardless of the gangue constituents. The process comprises heating the ore to a temperature of 750° C. with small quantities- of sodim chloride and coke to produce metallic copper, which then is recovered by flotation. Tests were made on' 23 copper ores of different types containing 0.8 to 5 percent Cu, .The copper recoveries ranged from 73 to 96 percent in concentrates assaying 10 to 62 percent Cu, depending on the grade and type of ore, The direct operating cost for a 1,000-ton-per-day furnace and flotation plant is estimated at about- $3 per ton of ore.

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

The evaluation and development of the Eastern North Carolina phosphate deposit resulted in one of the world's largest and most modern phosphate mines and fertilizer complexes at an investment in excess of $90,000,000. The resulting ore beneficiation process showed excellent correlation with pilot plant data. A number of variations from current industrial practices were introduced and projected from bench scale tests through pilot plant to production. Principal among these variations were the following: 1) removal of magnesium by classification, 2) simultaneous flotation of coarse and fine phosphate, 3) the use of saponified fatty acid, 4) utilization of filter wash water for deoiling, 5) utilization of a rougher concentrate for acidulation, 6) calcination of flotation concentrates, and 7) elimination of grinding prior to the manufacture of phosphoric acid.

"A unique pumped hydro storage facility using the ocean as a lower reservoir, combined with solar PV to create consistent, clean power will be presented: the Espejo de Tarapacá Project is comprised of a 300 MW seawater pumped storage hydroelectric plant using the Pacific Ocean as its lower reservoir and an existing natural concavity at the desert as its upper reservoir. The plant site is located in Chile’s northern coast 90 km south of Iquique. The site is characterized by a rocky shoreline and about 600 m of flat terrain moving inland, with an abundance of rock outcrops, after which there is a steep 700 m cliff. The power house and all waterways will be underground. The main focus is to present the rocks being expected in the underground works. As one of the actual most tectonically active regions of the world the seismic activity is particularly relevant and will be outlined in the presentation. INTRODUCTION Valhalla Energy is an independent Chilean-owned power development company. It focuses on the development, ownership and operation of renewable power projects. Valhalla was founded in 2011 with the goal of developing Chile’s natural renewable energy resources and strategically diversifies the country’s energy matrix away from an overdependence on imported fossil fuels. Valhalla began developing pumped storage hydro projects to provide scalable, clean, competitive, and reliable electricity by combining Chile’s superior solar resources with the country’s unique and extensive coastline suitable for storage.The capacity for renewable energy supply is driven by two distinct and unique natural characteristics found in northern Chile: (1) the abundant and reliable solar irradiation in the Atacama Desert and (2) a coastal site that benefits from a steep cliff and a natural concavity both within a relatively small land mass (see Figure 1). There are several potential sites in the northern part of the country that can be developed. The “Espejo de Tarapacá Project” is the first one to be built and subject of the present paper."

Introduction Agrico Mining Co.'s Florida mining division has three surface mines and employs nearly 700 workers. The division produces some 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of phosphate rock annually. It is a good business. And Agrico has made it better by making it safer through a new approach to mine safety. In one year, Agrico - the second largest phosphate mining company in the US - recorded a stretch of one million manhours without an accident. That same year, the direct cost of accidents dropped to $9137 from a previous five-year average of about $50,000. Together with Don Roe, division manager of safety and security, Division General Manager Don Morrow made 1981 a watershed year for safety at Agrico. Morrow called on consultants from Safety Management Services of Du Pont's Specialty Services division to strengthen a safety program that was already better than average. From the late 1970s and into 1981, lost-workday cases (LWCs) were costing Agrico an estimated average of $22,000 each. And they were occurring with alarming frequency. In 1977, the company recorded six LWCs at an incidence rate of 0.64. This was followed by a jump to nine cases in 1978. In 1979, both occurrences and the rate increased - 10 LWCs at a 1.19 rate. The number of LWCs decreased to seven in 1980, with a rate of 0.71. Agrico instituted a far-reaching safety program in 1981, which began to take full effect in 1982. LWCs dropped from five in 1981, to three in 1982. And the direct cost plummeted from $110,346 to $28,828. In 1983, the mines recorded only one LWC. Its $9137 cost represented a reduction of $101,209 since the Safety Management Services of Du Pont had been called in. Through early 1984, the LWC incidence rate at the facility's three mines, phosphate drying plant, and transportation department was down to 0.26. This is 84% lower than the 1982 mining industry average, making it the safety leader among all Agrico companies, including its chemical plants. New Approach Agrico had the basics of a safety program in place when the Du Pont consultants arrived. In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

Precipitation of hydrous manganese/iron oxides in streams can be readily observed in much of the northeastern United States, and is apparently a common phenomenon in other glaciated areas (1,2,3,4). Deposition occurs when Mn-enriched ground or surface water enters the stream environment and encounters conditions of higher Eh and pH. The preferred location for deposition is in shallow, fast-flowing segments of stream; the oxides usually form as coatings on detrital material. The experimental studies of Hem(5) and a considerable amount of work on marine and lacustrine manganese nodules(6,7,8) suggest that given an appropriate substrate, deposition of manganese oxides may occur even when the water is undersaturated in Mn with respect to the oxides, due to catalysis by organisms or by silicate, carbonate, or ferric hydroxide surfaces. Once begun, manganese oxide deposition is autocatalytic (9). Studies of the distribution of oxides in various size fractions of stream sediments indicate that the thickness and prevalence of the coatings commonly increases with increasing particle size in the coarse sand and gravel size ranges. Figures 1 and 2 show a fairly typical distribution of leachable metals over nine size fractions from 62 microns up to 8-16 mm. The leaching solution used was neutral ammonium citrate with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, which effectively removes the oxide coatings without significantly attacking most silicates, carbonates or sulfides. Figure 1 shows metal content as ppm of the total sample; figure 2 shows' the same data as micrograms of metal per square millimeter of surface area.

The Freeport McMoRan Bagdad Solvent Extraction (SX) circuit is the oldest plant of its kind currently in operation. The plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second SX-EW operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant near Miami, Arizona. Over the years of operation, the configuration of the SX has gone through many changes to accommodate a variety of pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades and flows. Although modifications to the original plant configuration are numerous, the Bagdad SX circuit has maintained its general form consisting of multiple long and narrow settlers. The unique configuration of the Bagdad SX circuit presents a variety of operational advantages and challenges; however, it continues to operate at a level recognized in the industry as excellent.

The Atlanta Plane Train project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport employed the progressive design-build approach. This provided opportunities for collaboration between the design-builder, design engineer, and owner and the implementation of innovative design and construction approaches. The innovations have reduced risks, allowed for adjustments during design to accommodate new challenges, and provided open-book cost and schedule evaluations. The progressive design-build approach has also allowed for pricing of work to occur in phases—capturing the design/construction challenges as the project evolves and when they are more clearly defined. While this has allowed for pricing to be performed with better project understanding and therefore less contingency, the associated time frame for approvals has required careful consideration to avoid impacts to the schedule. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of the progressive design-build approach.

Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.

With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies, applying the latest information technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both a major opportunity and a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. The emerging component and object technologies are changing the way everyone can beneficially use their computer and networks to add to their corporate bottom lines. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All process equipment and control strategies require maintenance from local personnel at the mine. Integrated use of existing and emerging technologies is making it possible to implement an overall process effectiveness control index. This index is based on key indices such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is highlighted. An emerging plant integration paradigm is described to simplify the implementation of business enterprise resources management and distributed plant management systems.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. This paper describes a mineral dressing process for the upgrading of tin ores. The process described is called 'agglomeration' and. is similar in many respects to flotation. Many variables have been examined experimentally both on batch and continuous operations and are reported upon herein... Using a Mt. Pleasant tin ore, assaying 0.5% Sn, an upgrading to 8% Sn, with a recovery of 95% could be obtained by this process.

[For reasons well known to Mining Engineers, fine grinding in the wet form is quite universal inn plants engaged in the traction of metallic values from crude ore In the processing, of non-metallic and industrial minerals, however, fine grinding in dry form is the more common method. The crude materials generally contain less moisture than required for wet grinding, and the products are usually marketed or used in the dry form, most of them as powders. To grind wet would therefore entail the addition of water and the expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.
