All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

As part of the 3RPORT and NEBT Projects, 5-mile Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnels were excavated with a 19 ft diameter Slurry and 26 ft diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machines. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, both tunnels were excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 2 and 5.5 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of both projects while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthroughs that took place in deep shafts excavated in urban environment as part of the projects.

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. A leach pad’s fluid flow characteristics greatly affect the recovery of metals from heap leaching. However, because there are other factors such as particle size distribution, application rate and method, and chemical reactions to consider, mining companies often overlook potential problems associated with fluid flow until it is too late. In an effort to better understand the dynamics of fluid flow in leach pads, a series of experiments were preformed using temperature probes. A model leach pad was set up using a particle size distribution, fluid application rate, and application method common to modern leaching methods. Variable water temperatures were applied in succession and data gathered from the three dimensional grid of temperature probes built in to the model. Current work is analyzing these data along with visual observations of the model, computer simulations, past mining experiences, and other related research, in an attempt to develop a low cost test that could be performed prior to large scale leaching to determine the fluid flow characteristics of a particular ore. This paper will summarize the work and findings to this point as well as suggest areas of additional related research.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

Recognition of mineralogical and chemical zoning patterns associated with mineralization is an integral part of mineral exploration. Even though the origin of zoning may not always be known, zoning patterns as expressed by the systematic distribution of ore and gangue minerals, alteration or elemental assays (soil and rock geochemistry) have received much attention and are extremely useful in guiding exploration efforts toward locating economic mineralization. By contrast, the potential of using zoning information recorded in solid-solution minerals to address practical geological-engineering problems has received less attention. Solid-solution minerals can provide critical information for common problems faced in exploration, mine development and valuation. Mineral zoning information from solid-solution minerals can now be easily obtained because advances in electron microprobe instrumentation have made these instruments a most efficient, accurate, economical and practical tool for analysis of large numbers of samples. Now entire mines and districts can be studied in a timely and cost-effective manner as required by modern mineral exploration and mining practice. This article shows how knowledge of the composition of fahlore minerals can be used in addressing important problems in exploration, development and valuation. Situations are described in which drilling intersected "low grade zones" (Case one: Orcopampa, Peru, precious metal system) and where there was a need to determine the "lateral correlation of multiple ore intercepts" (Case two: Sheep Creek, Montana, sediment-hosted sulfide deposit).

Dr. Roussey Roussev The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on fig. 3, in conjunction with Figs. 1 and 2. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected. The supportive discussion and verification by Dr. Roussev, with results similar to that of the paper, is appreciated. I will try to answer the additional questions he has raised. To begin with, the mill was fitted with six lifters of approximately one-quarter inch height. There has been extensive lab and plant level work to understand downstream influences of using dispersants like XFS-4272*. In sulfide ore processing, which is the area in which most industrial scale testing has been performed with this approach, neutral to positive influences have been observed. For example, positive effects (e.g., increased recovery) have been noticed in flotation operations involving ores that have a tendency to produce excessive slimes upon grinding. (1) Also, the use of a dispersant has been shown to demonstrate a positive influence on classification by improving the sharpness of separation and preventing a decrease in d50 value that usually accompanies increasing flow rates to classifiers.(2) The biggest potential downstream problem is in thickening, which at the dosages involved, has not been a problem in plant scale usage. The commercial price of dispersants like XFS-4272 is quite variable depending on source, concentration, etc, but a typical cost of XFS-4272 to achieve a 10% increase in throughput in industrial mills has been between 20 and 35- US per ton of feed ore (1981).

Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

Montana sapphires were first discovered in alluvial deposits in the Helena area in 1865 and subsequently were discovered in other alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana and also in a lamprophyre dike at Yogo in central Montana. From about 1900 until the late 1930?s, when synthetic sapphire began to come into widespread industrial use, Montana sapphire mines produced large quantities mainly for watch bearings with lesser production for the gemstone market. The Yogo deposit is now mined for the gemstone market and two of the alluvial deposits are mined to produce sapphires for the fee-sieving of sapphire-bearing gravel and for the direct sale of gemstones. The generally pale-colored sapphires from the alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana are heated to enhance their colors whereas the generally blue sapphires from the Yogo deposit require no treatment. Markets for sapphires from both the alluvial deposits and the Yogo deposit are strong. In spite of reported historic production in excess of 70 tonnes, mineable resources appear to remain at most major deposits. Also abundant untested lamprophyre dikes in central Montana may host sapphires similar to those at the Yogo deposit.

Agenda 21 calls on the countries on national level as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations on international level to develop a concept of sustainability indicators to measure the progress towards sustainability. This paper deals with the development of an evaluation system for sustainability in the minerals extraction. By their application, aspects of sustainable development in the raw minerals industry are to be systematically conceived and assessed. Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The pregnant solution is processed by a conventional closed circuit Merrill-Crowe system. The pregnant solution is clarified through three 158 L/sec (2500 gpm) US Filter Auto-jet clarifiers. JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) became the first entity to sign an exploration contract for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts (Crusts) with the ISA (the International Seabed Authority). The contract was signed on 27 January 2014, and 15 years exclusive rights for exploration activities had started in the contracted area, located in the North-Western Pacific Ocean. JOGMEC had already conducted basic scientific surveys around the contracted area from 1987 to 2012. Activities by JOGMEC that will be undertaken during the first 5 years of the contract include examination of geological and acoustic surveys, environmental baselines surveys, and undertaking basic studies of R&D in mining, processing, and smelting technologies. Geological surveys will include analysis of rock core samples, using BMS (Benthic Multi-coring System). Deep-towed TV Camera will be used to estimate the distribution of crusts deposit and to get basic environmental data of deep-sea megabenthos. Water sampling, marine sediment sampling, and installation of mooring systems on the seafloor will also be conducted as a part of environmental surveys.

Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

Currently six economic heavy mineral deposits are known on the Penholoway Terrace. These are (from south to north) the Green Cove Springs Mine (GCS), Boulogne Mine, Folkston Mine, Mission, Lulaton, and Ludowici. The GCS deposit is located to the west of Highway 17 between the towns of Green Cove Springs and Palatka in the state of Florida and has been mined since 1972. To the north, the erosion created by Black Creek restricts the northern extension of the orebodies and to the south a karst depression and erosion by the St. Johns River restrict southern extensions. The deposit is 20 miles long and up to 4.5 miles wide. Deposit thickness is from 5 feet up to 45 feet. The deposit is a series of regressive barrier island sequences deposited during the Pleistocene along the ancient Penholoway and Wicomico shorelines. The initial transgression of the ocean up to the location of the western Henry orebody was an extensive sea-level still stand as evidenced by the unit thickness and stacked transgressive regressive sequences. This period was followed by sporadic regressing seas and still stands, progressing eastward and stranding the sand bodies which make up the East Extended, TE, and East TE Ridge orebodies. The orebodies are underlain by predominantly non-mineralized fluvial sands and occasional back barrier lagoonal deposited clays. There is a predominance of wetlands on the southern extents of the zone as the surface elevations decrease due to a large karst depression.

Parameter estimation of the inverse distance estimation algorithm is presented. The objective function to be minimized is a sum of squared cross validation errors. The unknowns to be estimated are the exponent of the inverse distance estimator and anisotropic angles and ratios that are used in determining the distances in the algorithm. Ground engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these ?consumable? items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corporation to predict the consumption of excavator teeth. This paper presents the results of a Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. Many, if not most, of today's pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don't have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I'm referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I'm referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of' "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of' when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let's look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site.
