The newly discovered South Arturo deposit is a Carlin-type, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located on the Dee Mine property at the north end of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The Dee Gold Mine was discovered in 1981 by Dee Delamar, a Cordex geologist. The property was put into production by Rayrock Mines in 1984. During its 16-year mine life, the Dee Mine produced about 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of gold from oxide ore at an average production rate of about 1.24 to 1.55 t/a (40,000 to 50,000 oz/year). In October 1997, Bar-rick Gold Exploration acquired the right to earn a 60-percent interest in the Dee property from Dee Gold Mines through an exploration farm-out agreement. Barrick Gold Exploration began exploration activities on the property in 1998 and vested in its 60 percent operating interest in 2004. However, the discovery hole at South Arturo was not drilled until July 2005 from atop the historic mine dumps located 300 m (985 ft) south of the Dee openpit. The discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 75.6 m (248 ft) of oxide mineralization grading 1.9 g/t (0.055 oz/st) gold beneath 260 m (855 ft) of dump material and post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Oxidation within the deposit extends to depths greater than 610 m (2,000 ft). The deposit has passed the prefeasibility test and is presently in the feasibility stage. Exploration is on-going to enhance or enlarge the known deposit. The current resource for the deposit stands at 40.4 t (1.3 million oz) of gold. The South Arturo discovery is an example of an historic mining property yielding a new discovery through the diligent application of area selection criteria of the model type and persevering when early results were generally negative. Barrick?s original exploration pro-grams on the property were focused on the discovery of deep, high-grade sulfide deposits that would likely be mined by underground methods. As it turns out, South Arturo is mostly oxidized and will be amenable to mining by openpit methods

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. When overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in openpit coal mines, the use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play. However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilise crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realise reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

At one time explosives were the only economical means of rock tunnel excavation. Except in relatively long tunnels in the right rock explosives are still the cheapest means of rock excavation where they can be used. Today the most economical means of rock tunnel excavation is increasingly not the choice of the contractor. A good part of our work is for public agencies in urban areas and the public today is increasingly less tolerant of the disruption caused by our efforts. Owners in many cases have to direct their engineers to write specifications which severely restrict noise and vibration levels during construction. Sometimes specifications allow drill-and-shoot for starter tunnels only or even eliminate powder by fiat. Recent advances in the use of explosives such as sequential firing have made blasting more palatable to the public but are not enough in all situations. Thus the roadheaders on construction projects. In recent work I have seen the Alpine Miners, a Paurant Miner and the Robbins Mobile Miners used in several rock formations and now believe this type of equipment has a place in the tunnel constructor's choice of equipment. Rudy and I have not attempted to present a formula for choosing the best alternative excavation method in any given case because, of course, of the variables involved. We have simply tried to describe our experiences on a particular project and hope our observations will be of some value to tunnel constructors.

Brightwater West (BT4) represents the state of the art in utility tunneling, namely a long relatively small diameter, soft ground tunnel, with no intermediate shafts, under significant groundwater pressures, requiring very precise survey control in order to hit a small exit window. The tunnel is over 6.4 km (4 miles) in length, is expected to encounter active earth pressures of over 5 bars in glacial geology, and a planned hole through into a shaft eye constructed at 45.7 meter (150 feet) below the water table. Despite the fact that all of these challenges have been previously overcome in larger diameter tunnels, the technical solutions are much more challenging in a smaller diameter due to the lack of space available for implementing the equipment and techniques required. In addition to the technical challenges, the project is faced with many of the constraints designed to minimize the impact of these types of projects on the neighboring community and environment. The work shaft for BT4 is within 15.2 m (50 feet) of Puget Sound and is on a site that was previously occupied by petroleum storage tanks, and all of the tunnel muck has to be removed from the site by barge as trucking is not allowed by contract. The paper addresses the work performed during the preparation for tunneling stage of this project both in assembling the TBM and in preparing the site for its arrival.

BACKGROUND The history of the Pine Point Mine is a rich one. This property once boasted one of the largest and most profitable lead-zinc mines in Canada's long and storied mining history. The Pine Point mine used open pit technology to extract the ore, but they faced several challenges. In addition to logistics problems with haul distances and metal prices, the mine faced the challenge of a large in flow of water from the Great Slave Lake. Eventually, the Pine Point Mine was closed leaving behind a large deposit of lead-zinc ore. Following the closing of the Pint Point Mine, Tamerlane Ventures Inc. acquired this property which includes approximately 70 million tonnes of lead-zinc reserves. The initial phase of this project will concentrate on the R-190 deposit as a test site to prove their new approach for extracting the ore. The R-190 reserve is believed to have approximately 1,014,000 million tonnes of high grade ore varying from 5% to 52% combined lead-zinc. Once the pilot project proves the approach is valid, the process will be repeated in approximately 33 other ore bodies on the property. This paper is written to discuss the design process to determine the most effective means of placing production and service equipment in the same shaft. Currently the design work and the mining scheme is complete, but lead-zinc pricing has prevented Tamerlane Ventures Inc. from moving forward with the project.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

Recent epithermal gold discoveries in Chile and Bolivia provide increasing evidence of a belt of intermittent, epithermal, precious metal mineralization east of the main Andean porphyry copper belt. This relationship may be the result of an easterly decrease in the age of magmatism and erosional levels, in¬crease in depth above the underlying Benioff zone and consequent changes in magma chemistry, or some other unrecognized factor. Examples are: • The Choquelimpie gold-silver mine in Chile and numerous other epithermal prospects (such as La Riviera, Bolivia) in late Tertiary volcanics along the Chile-Bolivia border. These lie east of the belt that contains the Toquepala, Quellaveco and Cuajone porphyries in southern Peru and the Cerro Colorado, Copaquire and Quebrada Blanca porphyries in northern rhila

The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

All mining operations are superimposed on natural hydrologic systems. As a result, mining operations are influenced by natural hydrologic processes and require water management systems to successfully conduct mining activities. Managing water and mining-related solutions is a critical task at all stages of the mine life because of the time-dependent nature of natural and mining-related flows. Effective operation of the mining water management system requires a “systems” approach that integrates the time-dependent effects of all water and mine solution handling components. This paper discusses the concept and application of dynamic systems modeling to address the time dependent nature of mining water management systems.

Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. Herrenknecht has developed a mechanized shaft sinking method for soft and medium strength rock. This system combines innovative technologies which allow simultaneous excavation, removal of cut material and the installation of rock support. This Shaft Boring Roadheader ?SBR? is flexible in diameter and can be used in shafts with changing diameters and different shaft support requirements for depth up to 2,000 m. During regular excavation personnel are not required to access or work on the shaft bench. The boom used to cut the shaft profile is based on roadheader technology.

The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

The Homestake Mine included the open cut and underground workings up to 2,484 m (8,150 ft) deep. The mine ceased mining activities in December 2001 after 125 years of operation. Pumping from the underground workings continued for 18 more months until June 10, 2003. Homestake had completed a comprehensive hydrologic evaluation on post-closure underground flooding prior to the shutdown of pumping. After closure, the mine was selected by the National Science Foundation as the site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). An interim laboratory facility will be set at the 1478 m (4850 ft) Level. The final facility will be set at the 2256 m (7400 ft) Level or deeper. Pumping from the underground workings began on June 5, 2008 by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). During the period of June 2008 through March 2009, the pumping rate increased from 41 L/s (650 gpm) to 81 L/s (1,290 gpm) with an average rate of 60 L/s (950 gpm). As a result, the water level had been lowered more than 95 m (310 ft). It was found that the observed rebound and later decline to date is in close agreement with the model projections. Because of this, the authors of this paper reject claims of a lack of sufficient measurement devices in place and a lack of understanding of the hydrologic system at the Homestake Mine prior to shutdown of pumping in 2003 (Davis et al, 2009). Furthermore, it is believed that this validated model can serve as a useful tool for the SDSTA to manage future underground dewatering for the DUSEL operation. This paper evaluates the hydrologic conditions in the Homestake Mine area and projects the post-closure groundwater rebound and decline due to DUSEL pumping.

Tunnel boring machines continue to develop to take on not only larger and larger diameters but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar has required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunnelling machines that can not only safely excavate the tunnel but do so in an efficient, cost effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This paper will review the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied.

A recurrent concern in mining operations is how to deal with the large volumes of fresh water used which in turn generates large volumes of effluents that have to be treated. Water treatment can focus in one of two main strategies: treat the effluent as it is produced, or use a simulation tool to optimize water use in the process and reduce volume of effluents, contaminants concentrations, operational costs, and so on. This article shows a successful tool developed in Matlab-Simulink® that allows modelling a mining process and simulating potential improvements to evaluate the results. This tool has been proven in Cu-Mo operations and recently it has been used in poly-metallic operations. This article reviews the 4 Key Steps required to achieve our goals: a) Elaboration and verification of the mining Operation?s Block Diagram, based on a field survey; b)Model construction and input flows and qualities in selected streams; c)Model Validation and Simulation of new alternatives like recirculation, changes in reagents and dosage, partial treatment, flows merges/separation, and others; d)Development of the Optimal Solution which consists on determining the CAPEX and OPEX.

Increased consumption of concrete in the Pacific Northwest has pushed aggregate resource development pressure from urban areas west of the Cascade Range to rural areas east of the Cascades. Some recent development has focused on barge and rail accessible off-reservation Indian allotments that are exempt from state and county regulations. These lands have their own unique set of challenges, especially when Federal and Tribal governments have conflicting goals and attitudes pertaining to resource development. This paper discusses issues of leasing, reclamation, Federal vs. Tribal authority, cultural resources, and the history of allotment.

To keep Homestake's Bulldog Mountain silver and lead mining and milling operation in southwestern Colorado workable, natural ground water and decant water from the mine's sand backfilling operation must be continually pumped from the workings. Left untreated, this water exceeds maximum allowable levels for various contaminants that may be discharged to the environment. To comply with regulations, a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit was obtained and a mine water treatment plant for heavy metals removal was constructed in 1977. Due to equipment capacity and operational problems, and the lack of on-site technical personnel and analytic equipment, the first water treatment plant could not consistently meet permit limits. In 1979, Homestake entered into a consent decree with EPA and the Colorado Department of Health, calling for the construction of a water treatment facility to meet NPDES permit limits. Initial construction began in the spring of 1980 and the plant now produces effluent acceptable for discharge.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char) which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal -3.4 mm gasifier slag (~85% ash) to separate high (~100%) ash slag from low (~50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71% was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1 mm in size.

The evolution of longwall mining is briefly traced from its inception in England in the 1620's. In the beginning this method recovered 90% of coal with roof closure controlled by packs and walls. Mechanization began with kerf cutting, crude face conveyors, and improved face support. Full face mining was accompanied by the introduction of self- advancing hydraulic supports. U. S. longwalls evolved a retreating system to recover blocks of coal outlined by room and pillar panels. Computer control combined with the most modern technology have greatly increased productivity. Past trends are used to predict future technological directions.
