Present day capital costs are analysed for a 2 000 metric tonne per day (MTPD) pyrite burning plant and compared with a sulphur burning plant of the same capacity. Power, raw material and steam production rates are then compared for the two facility types. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to highlight the impact changing sulphur, pyrite, capital and operating costs have on the relative economics of these feeds. Technological improvement effects on capital cost and energy recovery are also discussed. Besides the steam produced from the burning of pure sulphur or pyrite, plants using an advanced form of heat recovery can produce up to 10 bar steam using heat from acid formation. The quantity depends on the overall water balance which is influenced by such factors as gas strength and product acid concentration. Modern materials and innovative process design also improve the ability to increase the high pressure steam from the roaster boiler in pyrite plants above the traditional 1.25 kg of superheated steam per kg of acid produced.

"Platinum-based alloys are being developed with microstructures similar to nickel-based superalloys for potential high-temperature applications in aggressive environments. Since the chemistries of nickel and platinum are similar, Pt-based alloys can be made with gamma prime ~Pt3Al precipitates in a gamma (Pt) matrix. Currently, the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru system is one of the bases for developing Pt-based alloys, where Al allows the formation of thePt3Al precipitate and also gives protection from the alumina scale formed, Cr provides oxidation resistance and stabilization for the L12~Pt3Al phase, and Ru provides solid solution strengthening in the (Pt) matrix. Four Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V and two Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V-Nb alloys were made, with compositions based on a quaternary alloy, ~Pt82:Al12:Cr4:Ru2, which hadpreviously been identified as having optimum properties. Four of the as-cast alloys had the targeted two-phase structure of ~Pt3Al and (Pt), and two were single-phase ~Pt3Al. Vanadium partitioned more to (Pt) than to~Pt3Al. There was an improvement in hardness compared to the quaternary alloys. The best addition of V was ~15 at.%; higher additions resulted in brittle intermetallic phases of the Pt-V system. The effect of Nbcould not be ascertained because of its high losses."

This paper describes the evaluation of a limit equilibrium model to simulate the behaviour of crush pillars in platinum mines. An analytical model was derived to calculate the residual average pillar stress (APS) values of the crush pillars. The values predicted by this model were compared to the numerical values obtained from TEXAN simulations. In general, the limit equilibrium model appears to be very attractive for simulating pillar failure as the gradual crushing of the outside of the pillar and the transfer of stress to the intact core can be replicated. The value of the TEXAN crush pillar model was further demonstrated by simulating an idealized layout with crush pillars between two adjacent panels. The simulations illustrated that oversized pillars will not crush close to the face and this may lead to seismic failure in the back area. An important finding of the study is that closure measurements may prove to be a very valuable diagnostic measure in crush pillars layouts. Distinct differences in magnitudes of closure were simulated for a scenario where the pillars crush as expected, compared to the scenario where an oversized pillar is left. Experimental closure data collected in a crush pillar stope provided further evidence regarding the value of closure measurements in these layouts.

Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

The Impala No. 1A ventilation shaft is located approximately 15 kms north of Rustenburg and is accessed via the R510road from Rustenburg to Northam/Thabazimbi. This situation is shown on the location plan in Figure 1. The geology at the site consists of an upper layer of black turf of about 1 metre in thickness, grading into weathered norite. The depth of weathering is generally less than 5 metres. Zones of deeper weathering may occur along fracture zones associated with faults and dykes. Groundwater occurs mainly within the weathered/fractured aquifer system. The ventilation shaft is a 5.1 m diameter upcast shaft ,and forms part of a system of ventilation shafts to complement the existing infrastructure as mining progresses down the new twin decline extension of Impala 1 shaft. The principal reason for these shafts is to lessen the risk of an extended RAW and also to counter the effects of the heat build-up as the mining goes deeper, with the resultant effect that the existing cooling centre (fridge plant) becomes more remote from activities. The No. 1A shaft (upcast) is positioned approximately 1,2 km on down dip from the main shaft and the No. 1Bshaft (downcast) approximately 1,2 km further. Geological information was used from a borehole 1,2 km away on strike from the upcast shaft. The first shaft (1A) is a 5,1 m diameter hole to be fitted with two 2,2 MW fans, whilst the second shaft (1B) is 4,1 m diameter to accommodate a 7MW fridge plant.

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the un-fractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

"The risk of spontaneous combustion is well known in the South African coal mining industry. In the coming years it is very possible that the incidence of spontaneous combustion will increase from current levels, due to factors such as an increased rate of mining, re-working of previously mined seams, more stooping and total extraction for underground mines, and higher stripping ratios for surface mines, leading to more spoils. It is also fairly certain that coal mining will face tougher environmental emissions legislation in the near future. To determine the areas where the risks of spontaneous combustion are high, it is necessary to improve on our current laboratory procedures for testing and evaluating coal samples, combining the results with site and field data, and if necessary revising the laboratory rating system to refine our understanding of South African conditions.Currently, laboratory tests are conducted in order to determine both the Wits-EHAC index and the crossing-point temperature which, when combined, give an indication of the spontaneous combustion propensities of the coal samples. This procedure has enabled the establishment of a database of results to review and evaluate South African coal seams. Using this database, the high-risk areas in terms of spontaneous combustion are identified. Tests have been undertaken for five consecutive years, between 2008 and 2012. In total, 119 coal samples from different coal seams and production coalfields have been analysed and classified through a series of laboratory tests. A comprehensive database of these results is available, and is continually being updated as new test results are added. This database will continue to expand, and to provide the basis for an improved risk evaluation methodology for spontaneous combustion"

This paper presents a study on the ability of the King stratification modelto describe density stratification patterns that are achieved under idealizedconditions. Tests were conducted in a batch jig using artificial particles inseven density classes. All particles in a density class had essentially thesame density, size, and shape. Tests were conducted for particle systemsinvolving from two to seven components. Good agreement was obtainedbetween measured and modelled data to an extent that gave strongendorsement of the mathematical appropriateness of the core equation inthe King model. Somewhat ambiguous results were found with regard toclaims about the independencies of the single experimentally-determinedparameter required by the model.

The objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the rock mass surrounding a stope or a tunnel on the seismic signal so that the rockburst damage on the excavation can be derived. It has been shown that the transfer function of rock mass surrounding an excavation can be modelled using a damped oscillator. The method of estimating the transfer function is extended in this paper. The parameters of a damped oscillator are estimated using inversion techniques and the transfer function is modelled as a time-varying system. The technique is tested on data acquired at three different sites in two deep gold mines. Employment of a modal model of the transfer function was suitable in two cases. Application of this technique is essential to track the time variation of the natural frequency during ground motion caused by a seismic event.

"In mechanized mining, poor equipment efficiency (availability, utilization, productivity, and quality) can endanger the success of the operation. This case study will show how an initiative to improve equipment performance developed into a comprehensive turnaround plan for the mine that placed it in the forefront of performance achievement.As part of a company-wide review process, poor overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) was identified as a major reason for the mine not achieving its targets. A project to improve the OEE identified eight improvement areas (elements) that contributed significantly to the poor performances. Measurement metrics were determined for these elements, followed by determination of baseline and target (improved) key performance indicators (KPIs). Cost savings associated with the improved efficiencies were calculated and tracked throughout the project. The mine team determined the specific actions required to achieve the target KPI in each element. These were individually developed and managed like mini-projectswith allocated responsibilities for delivery. The paper will indicate how this OEE improvement initiative triggered an improvement in almost all sections of the mine. Soon after launch, the initiative gathered momentum as the KPIs starting to improve. A visible tracking system exists at the mine and each employee can see the improvements and feel the success. The original eight elements were extended by five more, and the mini-projects grew as participants saw the success of the initiative.This paper concludes that through management and worker involvement, visible measurement and controls, and carefully chosen improvement elements, the mine was turned around. It is now achieving and exceeding its targets, and employee relations and motivation as well as safety have improved considerably. All of these achievements are reflected in the bottom line."

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. Ihr Einfluss über das Verhalten von stillgelegten Bergwerken lässt sich analysieren. SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Bergwerksbetrieb, Stilllegung, Mechanik, Beständigkeit, Ausbreitung, Aussolung, Solewasser. RESUME: L’article est consacré à deux aspects majeurs liés à l’abandon d’exploitations de sel : 1)- Le risque d’une instabilité à long terme de la surface du sol et son incidence sur la sécurité des personnes et des biens. 2)- La dissolution à long terme et le transport de sel sous l’effet d’une communication avec des eaux souterraines. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. Dans la deuxième partie, les principaux traits du comportement mécanique du sel (fluage, endommagement) ainsi que les processus de transport de ce matériau sont présentés. L’influence de ces aspects sur le comportement à long terme d’exploitations abandonnées de sel est ensuite analysée. During galena flotation of Rosh Pinah milled material, metal ions and salts contents of various water resources (deionized, simulated circulated, lead concentrate thickener, lead tailing thickener and borehole) influenced mineral recoveries, upgrade ratios, selectivities, froth stability and flotation kinetics. The various water resources employed during galena flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed by the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) were released into the flotation pulp. Lead concentrate thickener water caused depression of sphalerite and pyrite, increased fast floating fractions for silver, copper minerals, sphalerite and quartz (unwanted), and improved slow floating rate selectivity against pyrite and sphalerite. Lead tailing thickener water enhanced sphalerite recovery during galena flotation (unwanted), and increased fast floating fractions of pyrite. Western borehole water did not affect galena recovery, but sphalerite and pyrite recoveries were unacceptably too high. Ions from copper, lead, and zinc salts tended to release high amounts of ions, such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, and manganese from gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) during milling. During galena flotation, lead ions depressed sphalerite, pyrite and dolomite at a lead concentration of 400 ppm, but sphalerite was activated at a concentration of 800 ppm. Sphalerite was activated with copper ions (89% recovery, 2.09 upgrade ratio) and depressed with zinc ions (maximum recovery of 25%). This corresponds with findings in previous investigations. Dolomite and quartz were slightly activated with zinc ions. No evidence was found that lead and copper ions activated any gangue minerals during galena flotation. Iron ore fines are agglomerated to produce sinter, which is an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the height and time dimensions. This model can further be used for establishing empirical relationships between modelled parameters and measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions. Submodels describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. The model was applied to typical sinter test conditions to illustrate the results predicted, and to test sensitivities to parameters such as feed void fraction, feed coke percentage, and the fraction of combustion heat transferred to the gas phase. A model validation and improvement study should follow, ensuring sinter test results are free from experimental errors by conducting repeated tests.

As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Des changements considérables dans les variables sismiques ont été observés dans des intervalles d’extraction entre 100 et 120 mètres, ce qui pourrait être significatif pour l’espacement des piliers dans la conception de la disposition des mines de fond. Resultierend aus den zunehmenden Tiefen des Bergbaus in der südafrikanischer Goldbergbauindustrie stellt sich die vom Bergbau hervorgerufene Seismizität als bedrohliches Problem dar. Es war eine der Strategien innerhalb der Industrie, das Problem dadurch einzudämmen, daß regelmäßig plazierte Stabilisierungspfeiler in den Bergbaulayouts inkorporiert wurden. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht. Bedeutende Änderungen in den seismischen Variablen wurden an Bergbauspannen von 100 bis 120 Metern beobachtet und könnten für Abstandsbemessung von Pfeilern im Design des Tiefbergbaulayouts von Bedeutung sein.

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

Titanium bearing resources can selectively be chlorinated at temperatures below 200°C if the Ti02 in the feed is nitrided before chlorination. However, the nitriding reaction is highly endothermic, requires highly reducing conditions, is only thermodynamically favourable at elevated temperatures, and is affected by mass and heat transfer restrictions. At the required processing conditions, problems might also be experienced with sintering and with melting of slag forming components in the raw materials. A test programme was undertaken to study the effects of raw material type, temperature, gas composition, bed depth, carbon to raw material ratio and residence time in order to simulate conditions required for scaling up a nitriding process. In contrast to previous experience with low-grade titanium-bearing slag containing about 30% Ti02, ilmenite and chlorinateable slag do not form melting phases under the studied nitriding conditions and hardly sintered at all. Both feed materials can readily be nitrided with conversions in excess of 90% at temperatures around 1300°C and using bituminous coal as reducing agent with fixed carbon in excess of 1.1 times the stoichiometric requirement. The conversion decreases as the bed depth of the feed material increases and the N2/CO ratio in the gas decreases. Analysis of the relative rates of mass and heat transfer into the reacting beds of ilmenite and slag showed that the heat transfer rates are more limiting than the mass transfer rates. In order to increase the throughput that can be achieved in a kiln, it would be necessary to take special measures to enhance the heat transfer rates into the mass of reacting material. One such a measure is to pre-form the mass of reacting material into thin-walled, hollow brick shapes prior to introducing it into a kiln. Depending on bed depth, temperature and N2/CO ratio, required residence times in the high temperature zone of the kiln can vary between about 6 and 10 hours. "Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.

On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.
