SYNOPSIS This paper demonstrates that the horizontal stresses induced by the creation of a tabular scope in a single mining step are always tensile at the centre of the stope span, but that compressive stresses are actively generated in hangingwalls and footwalls during sequential mining. A stress-distribution mechanism is introduced, and is used to explain the results for elastic behaviour, and for inelastic behaviour both during a single mining step and during multiple mining steps.

This paper reports the results of a literature review carried out on nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels and their properties. It was found that a large volume of work has been carried out on the subject, particularly with regard to the more common stainless steels such as types 304 and 316. No work appears to have been conducted on the highly alloyed steels such as type 310S. Nitrogen has been found to increase the stability of the austenite in stainless steels and to impart significant improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of these alloys. Importantly, nitrogen appears to increase both the ductility and the strength of austenitic stainless steels over a wide range of temperatures.

The development of a continuous recording scintillation counter mounted on a cyclometer by P. D. Toens (Fellow) and D. Visser (Visitor) In order to facilitate ground radiometric surveys the Atomic Energy Board has developed a continuous recording device attached to a scintillation counter which is mounted on a cyclometer. Details concerning the construction are given.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy collaboration with the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, arranged a colloquium to inform mine management of the current state of knowledge on the rockburst hazard associated with geological structures. The Colloquium was held at Mintek on 4th June, 1986, and attracted approximately 240 delegates.

The effect of varying aliphatic, olefinic, and aromatic groups in the N- and S-positions of dithiocarbamates was investigated in the selective and bulk flotation of a mixed copper-lead-zinc-iron ore. Selective and bulk flotation were found to be dependent on the type of functional group, as well as on the position of substitution.

The topic of 'Corrosion of Piping and Tubing in the Mining Industry' was very appropriate since the date had been chosen to coincide with that of the Electra Mining Exhibition.

A computer-aided blast design consultant system has been developed. The software consists of two modules: one uses theoretical and empirical formulae and procedures to design a blast based on user supplied geological and mechanical data, while the other is an expert system that analyzes blast vibration problems and recommends remedial action using knowledge based rules. The system is currently undergoing field evaluation.

A diamond-drilling programme conducted from 1971 to 1973 by the Phelps Dodge Corporation revealed three complex sulphide ore-bodies in the highly folded Namaqualand mobile belt on the farm Aggeneys, some 65 km west of the small town of Pofadder on the road to Springbok in the northwestern Cape. Of these, the Broken Hill occurrence is the most promising.

The authors and Iscor's management are to be congratulated on an interesting and detailed paper that discloses Iscor's philosophy, strategy, and action concerning what can also be termed productivity improvement. Aside from the pioneering work of Beeforth and Dicks regarding Dynamic Profitability Analysis at Vaal Reefs, there appears to be a shortage of papers on this topic from the mining groups.

The material presented is taken from studies conducted overseas, and it is recommended that similar studies should be conducted on mixtures containing South African coals, which differ from the coals of the northern hemisphere

A review of copper hydrometallurgy by J. C. PAYNTER, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Copper hydrometallurgy is discussed with special reference to the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates under South African conditions. The following processes are described and illustrated: Sherritt Gordon's ammonia pressure leachilng, the Arbiter Process, sulphuric acid pressure leaching, roasting processes, the Cymet Process, and the ferric chloride process developed at the National Institute for Metallursy. These processes are then compared with respect to the form of sulphur produced (elemental sulphur or sulphate), the character of the iron product and the handling of different types of ore.

A variety of processing problems in the hydrometallurgical extraction of uranium in the U.S.A. are contrasted with those in South Africa. In U.S. plants, for example, problems are often encountered in the separation of vanadium, molybdenum, and uranium, and in the contamination of the circuit with organic acids. South African plants often experience problems with dissolved silica in the feed, clarification of feeds, and problems associated with synthetic polyelectrolytes. Individual situations are examined, along with the analytical techniques that assist in solving specific problems. Successful approaches that have been applied to mechanical and chemical problems in' uranium solvent-extraction plants are discussed.

The capacity of grinding mills can be maximized by use of measurements of mill power and bearing pressures. The criterion is as follows. If the derivatives with respect to time of the power and bearing pressure signals have the same sign, the volume of the mill load is smaller than the optimum value; if they have different signs, the volume of the mill load is greater than the optimum value. Few attempts have been made to use measurements of bearing pressure in the estimation of absolute values for the parameters that define the state of the mill load (e.g, mass, volume, and dynamic angle of repose) because the bearing-pressure signal is a complex function of these and other parameters. This paper gives a mathematical model that relates bearing pressures to these parameters. The theoretical values obtained from this model are compared with experimental values, and it is concluded that the model constitutes a good description of experimental reality. If accurate measurements of the load supported by each bearing are available, the model can be used in the estimation of the mass of the load in the mill. If independent estimates of the volume of the load or the dynamic angle of repose are available, the other parameter can be estimated from measurements of the bearing loads.

Abstract This paper presents the results of a series of creep tests performed on a total of nine samples of Lac du Bonnet granite from the Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Canada. Each of the nine samples were subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of the average uniaxial compressive strength of the granite and were maintained at that level of constant loading for periods of time ranging between a few minutes and several months. Acoustic emission was recorded in order to monitor the development and accumulation of brittle microfracture damage in the samples throughout the long-term loading. According to previously published theoretical predictions and field results, as well as similar experimental results of creep tests in granite, samples should fail when loaded to 70% of their UCS for an extended period of time. Six of the samples did not fail when subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of their UCS over periods of several months and were subsequently subjected to uniaxial compression to failure. The average strength of the samples that had previously been subjected to long-term loading were comparable to the average published strength of this rock. Three of the nine samples had increased end confinement and these three samples failed under long term loading. Résumé Cet article présente les résultats d'une série d'essais de fluage de roche exécutés sur neuf échantillons de granite de Lac du Bonnet, du laboratoire souterrain de recherches près de Pinawa, Canada. Chacun des neuf échantillons a été alors soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de la résistance à la UCS moyenne du granit et a été maintenu à ce niveau du chargement constant pendant des périodes s'étendant entre quelques minutes et plusieurs mois. L'émission acoustique a été enregistrée pendant les essais afin d'obtenir des indications des dommages pendant le chargement à long terme. Selon des résultats théoriques précédemment édités et les résultats expérimentaux semblables des essais à long terme en granite, échantillons devrait échouer si chargé à 70% de leur UCS pendant une période prolongée. Six des échantillons n'ont pas cassé quant ils ont été soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de leur UCS et ont été plus tard soumis à la compression uniaxiale à la rupture. La force moyenne des échantillons qui avaient été précédemment soumis au chargement à long terme étaient comparable à la force éditée moyenne de cette roche. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Resultate von Kriechversuchen, die an neun Proben aus dem Lac du Bonnet Granit des "Underground Research Laboratory" bei Pinawa in Kanada durchgeführt wurden. Jede der neun Proben wurde Drücken unterworfen, die mehr als 80% der einaxialen Druckfestigkeit des Granites entsprechen. Diese Drücke wurden für verschiedene Zeitspannen von wenigen Minuten bis zu einigen Monaten auf einem konstanten Niveau gehalten. Während der gesamten Langzeitbelastung wurden akustische Emissionen aufgezeichnet, um die Entwicklung und gesamthafte Beschädigung der Proben durch Sprödbruch aufzuzeichnen. Wider Erwarten trat bei sechs der Proben kein Versagen ein, als sie mit über 80% ihrer einaxialen Druckfestigkeit über mehrere Monate belastet wurden; daher wurden sie im Anschluss bei einaxialer Kompression zum Versagen gebracht. Die mittleren Festigkeiten der im Langzeittest verwendeten Proben sind vergleichbar mit den normalerweise für diesen Gesteinstyp angegebenen Festigkeiten. Drei der neun Proben versagten unter der Langzeitbelastung; diese drei Proben hatten eine erhöhte Endflächenreibung.
