Embankment dams are often constructed on soft rock foundations in Japan, so it is important to precisely predict deformation of the foundations due to fill placement at the design stage. In order to accurately evaluate the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction, the influence of the scattering of the deformability of foundations on the deformation behaviour should be investigated. In this paper, a method of evaluating the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction was studied with stochastic deformation analysis considering the scattering of the deformability of the dam foundation. Based on the analytical results, a dam foundation design using the deterministic method considering the scattering of its deformability was discussed. Da in Japan Uferdämme of auf weichen Felsfundamenten gebaut werden, ist es wichtig, die Verformung der Fundamente auf Grund der Platzierung der Aufschüttungen bereits in der Planungsphase genau vorherzusagen. Im Zusammenhang mit einer genauen Beurteilung der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten sollte auch der Einfluss der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Fundamente auf das Verformverhalten untersucht werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Bewertungsmethode zur der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten mit Hilfe von Wahrscheinlichkeitsanalysen der Verformung unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Dammfundamente untersucht. An Hand dieser analystischen Ergebnisse wurde das Design der Dammfundamente dann enthusiastisch mittels deterministischer Methoden hinsichtlich der Streuung der Verformbarkeit diskutiert. Comme les barrages en remblai sont souvent construits sur des fondations rocheuses tendres au Japon, il est essentiel de prévoir précisément les déformations des fondations causées par la mise en place du remblayage durant la phase de conception. Afin d’évaluer avec exactitude le tassement et la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction, l’effet de la dispersion de la déformabilité des fondations sur le comportement de déformation doit être étudié. Dans cette étude, l’auteur a étudié la méthode d’évaluation du tassement et de la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction en procédant à une analyse aléatoire/stochastique de la déformation et en prenant en considération la dispersion de la déformation des fondations du barrage. En se basant sur les résultats de l’analyse, la conception des fondations de barrage avec la méthode déterministe considérant la dispersion de sa déformabilité a été activement discutée.

Many minerals processing operations result in crushed rock being mixed with a liquid. Sometimes, the rock particles have to be dried before the next process begins and there may be a considerable distance between the equipment carrying out these processes. Bateman Engineered Technologies (BET) developed, patented and commercialized a method of simultaneous pneumatic conveying and drying. A joint project to assist with optimizing the process is under-way. Part of it is a numerical simulation of the process. The simulation is done using a dedicated program written in MATLAB, (commercial software which is widely used in engineering). It accounts for heat and mass transfer as well as particle transport. The main part of the program consists of a loop containing a series of equations which are evaluated sequentially. During any particular iteration, the properties are changed one at a time. Since the properties are changing relatively slowly, this method gives good results. The outputs of the simulation are consistent with the operational experience of BET’s engineers. The output is very comprehensive and all numerical. Since the program is currently being used for research purposes, flexibility is very important. Thus the output is converted into a spreadsheet file. Variations in the output quantities are displayed graphically using MS Excel. Some simulation could have been done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The advantages and disadvantages (technical, financial and skills requirements) of the two approaches for this particular type of simulation are compared briefly. The South African narrow reef hard rock mining industry has been stuck in a time warp with relatively little change in the mining process in the last century. This paper presents a methodology on how to implement change in narrow reef hard rock mining. It then explores a number of technologies that have been introduced into this mining industry and the impact that they have had on the mining process. The author then presents his view on whether the defined change process has been followed and sets out to identify the most critical aspect of ensuring that change is successfully implemented. Future demand will also be speculated on.

Job evaluation and the changing wage pattern by D. L. VAN COLLER, B.A.(Cape Town), M.A., B.Litt.{Oxon.) (Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a 'many stepped' job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.

The effects of nitrogen alloying on the corrosion properties of austenitic stainless steels were investigated by a combination of potentio-dynamic and surface analysis techniques. The results indicate that nitrogen undergoes the phenomenon of anodic segregation, affecting both general and localized corrosion resistance. Nitrogen alloying is found to be beneficial to general corrosion resistance in a de-aerated sulphuric acid solution, but to be detrimental in an aerated solution of sulphuric acid This phenomenon is explained in terms of an ammonium-ion polarization effect. Localized corrosion resistance is found to improve dramatically as a result of nitrogen alloying, the nitrogen improving the formation, maintenance, and stability of the passive film in environments that promote pitting various theories that have been proposed to account for these phenomena are discussed.

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

This paper covers the commercial development of gravity separation of fine particles using a Lamella High Shear Rate REFLUX? Classifier (REFLUX? Classifier), focusing primarily on coal applications. The REFLUX? Classifier is a fluidized bed device that incorporates a system of closely spaced parallel inclined channels located above the fluidized bed. These channels make it possible to achieve a significant suppression of the effects of particle size, resulting in a highly effective separation on the basis of density. The improved gravity separation performance is shown to be remarkably high, with a significant reduction in the variation of separation density with particle size, and a significant reduction in the change in Ecart probable error (Ep) with size. The first full commercial-sized units of the REFLUX? Classifier were field-tested in late 2009 in coal applications. More recently, the technology has been applied in fine particle separation in minerals applications and there are a number of full-sized units operating in chrome applications in South Africa. Initially, pilot-scaled units (typically the RC?300) were trialled in iron ore, mineral sands, and manganese plants amongst other minerals, typically after other technologies failed to achieve the desired results. Currently a number of laboratories globally are carrying out more testing in minerals applications. More than 50 RC? units are now operating in coal and minerals applications. This paper introduces the REFLUX? Classifier technology, identifies commercial applications, and gives some commercial results.

This paper describes the development and implementation of amine-wide continuous stability monitoring system at the Declines Section, Anglo Platinum Union JV. The Declines Section at Union JV experienced a number of large panel collapses during 2005 and 2006. As well as posing a major safety risk, the panel collapses had a major effect on production since the Declines Section is a semi-mechanized operation. The collapses would often extend into the mechanized strike roadways, resulting in a loss of access to both current and future production faces. The collapses have been largely overcome owing to a change in support design and the implementation of a mine-wide stability monitoring programme. This paper describes the precursors to collapses, which were identified using continuous closure measurements and the remedial measures taken. It also outlines the design and introduction of a robust and reliable monitoring tool, which is now used on a mine-wide basis to provide early warning of large-scale collapses.

This paper was presented at the Coloquium on Management Techniques in the Mining and Metallurgical Industry, which was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held in Pretoria during June 1988. The author asks whether technical audits are of any use to management. Technical auditing he defines as an evaluation undertaken by an outsider of whether a technical activity is being carried out correctly. After examining the types of technical auditing, and its prerequisites and procedures, he describes its application in regard to quality, and to production processes and their adequacy. He then answers his question by saying that, not only are technical audits very useful, but they form an essential element in the provision of quality products. In addition, they give management the opportunity of testing whether the activities of the organization are being conducted correctly. This is their most important function in that they alert management to areas of potential growth, modernization, and innovation. However, the use to which technical auditing is put remains the key to its value; that is, its value depends on the positive action that each manager takes as the result of a technical audit.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

The locations of potential reserves of chromite ores throughout the world are discussed. Reference is made to the marked changes in international trade in chromite ores during the past ten to fifteen years, and to the change in locality of the production of ferochromium aloys, which is curently largely carried out in the country of origin of the ores. The influence of these changes has been very profound in South Africa, which has the largest smelting capacity and the largest production of ferochromium aloys in the world. A proportion of South African ore is stil exported to meet the demands for the production of chromium chemicals and refractories, including a large tonnage of foundry sands. Ferochromium smelters in South Africa have a capacity of virtualy 1 Mt of aloy per annum. Nearly al this development has taken place since the introduction of the argon-oxygen decarburization (A.O.D.) process for the smelting of stainless steels. Formerly, expensive Iow-carbon ferochromium aloys were required as raw materials, but the AO.D. process, which is being used world wide, permits the use of high-carbon ferrochromium, the main product of the smelters in this country. The production in South Africa of chromium-containing corrosion- and heat-resistant steels is stil on a relatively smal scale, but serious atention is being paid to the exploitation of low-carbon weldable feritic chromium steel.

Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). This paper describes tests on the performance of a continuous miner in cutting South African coal. Although coal cutting has been investigated extensively overseas, the results have not led to significant changes in machine design because these machines find little difficulty in cutting the softer overseas coals at a fast rate. In general, the results of the tests show that cutting efficiency improves markedly as the depth of cut per revolution of the drum increases, and that the best spacing of picks on the drum is twice the depth of cut. Pick shape is of secon¬dary importance in terms of cutting efficiency, only small differences having been found between the performances of conical- and chisel-shaped tools.
