A high proportion of damaging rockbursts are thought to be underlain by seismic events that represent shear or rupture along planes of weakness (faults, joints, dyke contacts). Such events are controlled by shear stresses and friction properties along the plane. Excess shear stress (ESS) is a measure that can be evaluated numerically and that, in principle, can be used in an assessment of the possible magnitude and relative likelihood of seismic activity. Methods for the calculation of ESS in practical mining contexts, and for the estimation of the magnitudes of possible seismic event progressions, are briefly reviewed. The effects of variables such as depth, stoping width and, in particular, virgin horizontal stresses on general shear-type seismic hazards are investigated. Attempted back-analyses of two large rockbursts are described.

The ore mined at Black Mountain is of a complex nature, being composed of both magnetic and massive sulphides, which have greatly varying metal values. Because of this, there is need for a rapid method of assaying for the continuous monitoring and control of the process streams, and the Outokompu Courier onstream analysis system and the Proscon process-control computer systems have therefore been installed. Geostatistics In view of the continuing demand, the Department of Mining and Mineral Sciences in association with Special Courses Division, Department of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, both of the University of Leeds, will offer two further courses on A Practical Introduction to Geostatistics in 1981, each covering ten working days. In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. Abstract In the Kiirunavaara underground mine, crude ore is transported through ore passes from the production levels to the main haulage level. Failure and stability problems have occurred in some of these ore passes, with increasing frequency as mining depths increase. In this paper, selected results are presented from a research project run by LKAB. The presentation focuses specifically on stability analysis. Numerical models were used to identify failure mechanisms, in conjunction with empirical data and engineering judgment. The most important controlling factors governing failure and damage in ore passes were quantified. A causative model was established in which failure mechanisms and failure development were described. This model was used to formulate a prognosis of future ore pass stability, and for recommending remedial measures. Résumé Le transport du minerai entre les niveaux de production et le niveau principal de transport, à la mine de fer de Kiruna, se fait par des passes à minerai. Avec la profondeur d'extraction grandissante, les problèmes de stabilité au niveau de ces passes à minerai se sont multipliés. Les résultats d'un programme de recherche sur la stabilité des passes à minerai à la mine de fer de Kiruna sont présentés dans cet article. Les mécanismes de rupture ont été identifiés à l'aide de modèles numériques, de données de terrain et du jugement empirique des ingénieurs. Les facteurs principaux controllant l'instabilité des passes à minerai ont aussi été quantifiés. Un modèle a été établi dans lequel les mécanismes de rupture et le développement des dommages ont été décrits. Ce modèle a été utilisé à fins prédictives et remédiatives. Zusammenfassung In der Grube Kiirunavaara wird das gewonnene Erz über Sturzschächte von den Abbauebenen zu der Hauptförderebene gefördert. Mit zunehmender Tiefe des Abbaus sind vermehrt Standsicherheitsprobleme in den Sturzschächten aufgetreten, die teilweise zu Verbrüchen geführt haben. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer Forschungsarbeit des LKAB präsentiert. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen gelegt. Zur Ermittlung der Bruchmechanismen wurden numerische Modelle in Verbindung mit empirischen Daten angewendet. Die wichtigsten Einflußfaktoren für das Versagen der Sturzschächte wurden ermittelt. Es wurde ein Modell zur Beschreibung der Bruchmechanismen und des Versagensablaufs aufgestellt. Dieses Modell wurde verwendet, um die Standsicherheit zukünftiger Sturzschächte zu prognostizieren und um Sanierungsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten.

The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the 'sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.

The results of small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot-plant investigations at Grootvlei Proprietary Mines Ltd, President Brand Gold Mining Co. Ltd, and Western Areas Gold Mine Co. Ltd are reported. At each mine, a pulp was fed simultaneously to a carbon-in-pulp plant, allowing a direct comparison of the metallurgical performance of the two processes. With the Grootvlei pulp, gold was extracted more efficiently by resin than by carbon owing to the Iow concentration of competing base-metal cyanide complexes in solution. With the Western Areas pulp, the reverse was true because of the high concentrations of copper and nickel in solution. Finally, with the President Brand pulp, resin-inpulp was significantly superior to carbon-in-pulp owing mainly to the inherently slow rate of gold extraction from calcine by activated carbon. Results are presented that show the efficiency of the elution of gold and other elements with a variety of reagents from the loaded resins arising from these three campaigns. At Western Areas, a detailed investigation enabled a preliminary cost evaluation to be made of three techniques for the elution of strong-base resins.

The paper briefly outlines the history of the successful development of vegetating techniques for mine-residue deposits. It seeks to place on record the major roles played by M.J. Mrost, who initiated and systematically developed the concept, and W.H. Cook, who continued the trials and successfully directed a stupendous large-scale project. The vegetating techniques currently practised are outlined, and it is concluded that vegetating is still the only surface-stabilizing technique of any significance that is employed throughout the world.

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

The paper gives an assessment of the available data on the linear elastic fracture mechanics involved in stress corrosion cracking and in the behaviour of reactor pressure-vessel materials exposed to a simulated pressurized water-reactor environment. As a result of the different experimental techniques used in the various studies mentioned, only a few detailed conclusions can be drawn. The data from constant-displacement wedge-opening loading (WOL) tests, with the exception of one study, exhibited very limited or no crack extension during exposure periods of up to 14000 hours. The data from constant-load tests indicated evidence of crack extension, but the nature and extent of the crack extension are still unclear. When crack extension did occur, it was exclusively transgranular in nature. Certain differences in the available test data are tentatively explained in terms of the experimental procedures used, and the need for a consistent code of experimental techniques is highlighted.

The induced elastic stresses in the sidewalls of gold-mining tunnels at a depth of 4000 m in the Witwatersrand exceed the peak compressive strength of even the best-quality quartzite rocks. Laboratory tests measuring post-yield stress versus strain response show that brittle fracture occurs, followed by a loss in strength associated with strain-softening behaviour. Numerical modeling based on an assumed Mohr-Coulomb criterion fitted to the test results shows that large ongoing deformations of the sidewall occur, leading to total tunnel failure without adequate support. A methodology is presented to enable a quick assessment to be made of support requirements in terms of ground characteristic curves for numerically derived pressure versus displacement. From these curves, estimates can be made of the force levels for cable bolting and of the thickness and strength requirements for shotcrete linings. As an example of its application, the methodology is used in a comparison of the relative stability efficiencies of a square-shaped tunnel and a horizontal ellipse-shaped tunnel.
