SYNOPSIS Heart rates, oral temperatures, shovels/min and number of 3/4 ton cars/hour trammed over distances of up to 350 ft were measured in samples of 6-10 miners, engaged in tram-shovelling, at 76°, 84°, 86°, and 89°F wet bulb temperatures in stopes in a mine. From the results it has been concluded that a man with an 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity of about 2. 8 litres/min should be able to work: at 6 shovels/min, or 30 cars/shift per two men, at 76°-84°F; at 5 shovels/min, or 27 cars/shift per two men, at 86°F; and at 4 shovels/min, or 24 cars/shift per two men, at 89°F wet bulb air temperatures. INTRODUCTION A number of gold mines in South Africa still use tram-shovelling extensively. In this method of rock removal from the face of the stope, Bantu mine workers load rock into cars and tram the cars to a centre gulley where they are emptied. Previous studies from this Laboratory3 have shown that tram-shovelling is one of the most arduous tasks underground. The rate of energy expenditure is relatively high, being an oxygen consumption of about 1.4 litres/min over a period of some hours. In cool air conditions the upper limit to the rate of production of the well-motivated men employed on tram-shovelling has been shown1 to depend upon their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (as measured by their maximum oxygen intakes). However, in hot conditions the factors which set the upper limit to the rate of production are different. They are primarily the ability of the body to maintain a heat balance between the rate of heat production, due to physical work, and the hot atmosphere, so that the men do not develop excessively high body temperatures8. In order to give mine managers guidance on the 'optimum' rate of production of Bantu mine workers engaged upon tram-shovelling under different temperature conditions underground a study was carried out in a mine. The number of shovels per minute and cars per hour were recorded and heart rates and oral temperatures were measured throughout the duration of the shift on samples of 6-10 Bantu mine workers in different air conditions. The results of the study are recorded in this paper and conclusions are drawn as to the number of shovels per minute and cars per hour which Bantu mine workers of 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity should be able to produce at wet bulb air temperatures of between 76° and 89°F without either excessive fatigue or danger of heat illness.

Provisions of adequate thrust Conclusions INTRODUCTION In South African gold mines some 100 million tons of rock are broken each year by drilling and blasting. Only minor improvements to this method of rockbreaking have been made since the general introduction of pneumatic rockdrills for stoping 50 years ago and, more recently, of drillsteels tipped with tungsten carbide. The combined total cost of drilling and blasting amounts to almost R0,50 per ton of rock broken, which is just short of one quarter of the direct cost of stoping or development. Rockdrilling accounts for about R0,25 of the total cost of rockbreaking, of which RO,12 represents labour costs and R0,13 the cost of drillsteels, rockdrill spares and power. Mine air compressors use over 7 X 108 kWh of electric energy a year, amounting to 7 percent of the total electric power used by the gold mining industry. The efficiency of percussive rockdrilling is, therefore, of considerable significance to mining costs. Over the past four years the Mining Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of S.A. has been engaged in experimental studies of percussive drilling. These experiments were conducted at test sites on Robinson Deep Gold Mine and Vlakfontein Gold Mine, made available by Gold Fields of South Africa, Limited. Three rockdrills, designated types A, Band C, of different manufacture, were used in the experiments which involved the measurement of the following operating characteristics: 1. Throttle air pressure 2. Applied thrust 3. Penetration rate 4. Air consumption 5. Blows per minute 6. Drill steel revolutions per minute. The results of these investigations are presented in three parts. Part I, "The theory of percussive rockdrill operation" which provides a concise, mathematical description of the performance of a percussive rockdrill in terms of its principal mechanical dimensions and operating conditions, and an analysis of the bit and gauge wear of drillsteels. Part II, "Measurements of percussive rockdrill performance" in which the experimental results are presented in terms of thrust-penetration rate curves at different throttle air pressures and throttle pressure-air consumption curves, which are shown to agree well with the predictions of theory. In addition, data relating gauge wear on the drillsteel and penetration rate to the distance drilled are discussed. Part III, "Practical implications" in which an analysis of the status of thrusting devices is made and the benefits that would derive from using uptimum thrusts are discussed.

INCOME TAX: POST-GRADUATE STUDY COURSE CONCESSION As a result of representations made by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of S.A. and the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, engineers and scientists will now be allowed to deduct expenses incurred on post-graduate study courses from their taxable income. The conditions of this concession are set out in section 16 of the Income Tax Act, 1969, which reads as follows: 16. (1) The following section is hereby substituted for section 16 of the principal Act: 16. "Notwithstanding the provisions of section 23(a) and (b), there shall be allowed to be deducted from the income of any person who is a dentist or medical practitioner or practises any profession referred to in paragraph (a), so much as the Secretary may allow of any expenditure incurred by such person in the circumstances contemplated in paragraph (c), if the Dental Association of South Africa in the case of a dentist, or the Medical Association of South Africa in the case of a medical practitioner, or the "Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns" or the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa in any other case, certifies in such form as the Secretary may prescribe that such person- (a) if he is not a dentist or medical practitioner, is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences awarded by a recognized university on completion of a prescribed minimum period of study of not less than four academic years or the equivalent thereof and enabling the holder thereof to practise the profession of an engineer or a profession for which advanced and specialised scientific knowledge is required which relates directly to- (i) the development or exploitation of natural resources; (ii) mining or prospecting for minerals; (iii) the production of pastoral, agricultural or forest produce ; (iv) the breeding or care of farm animals; (v) any industrial process; or (vi) the training of specialists in any branch of science or technology connected with any aforementioned profession; (b) has practised his profession for not less than three years; and (c) has incurred such expenditure during the year of assessment in respect of the attendance by him of any postgraduate study course approved by such body to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in the Republic". (2) The amendments effected by subsection (1) shall first take effect in respect of assessments for the year of assessment ending on the twenty-eighth day of February, 1970. From this section it is clear that the concession will only be granted if the application is accompanied by a certificate, which certificate must be either signed by the Chairman of Die Akademie or the President of the Associated Societies. In terms of the authority granted such certificates must certify that: (i) the taxpayer concerned has practised his profession for not less than three years; (ii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer during the year of assessment indicated in the certificate; (iii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer in respect of the attendance by him of a post-graduate study course approved by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa or Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, as the case may be, to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in South Africa; (iv) the taxpayer is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences, which degree was awarded by a recognized university,

The Chemwes uranium plant treats old gold-plant residues from the Sttifontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines by acid leaching, belt filtration, countercurrent ion exchange (ClX), and Bufflex solvent extraction (SX). The uranium is recovered by precipitation as ammonium diuranate. Absorption and elution in the CIX section are achieved in four NIMCIX columns operating as two parallel streams. Each loading column is 4,85 m in diameter and contains 12 absorption stages. The elution columns are 3 m in diameter and contain 8 stages. The eluant used is 10 per cent sulphuric acid at ambient temperature. During the commissioning and initial operating periods reported here, the plant yielded an average barren solution of 1,6 p.p.m. of U3O8 from a feed with a mean U3O8 concentration of 132 p.p.m. The U3O8 concentrations in the barren solution were better than 2 p.p.m. some 85 per cent of the time, and better than I p.p.m.73 per cent of the time. Investigations are underway to institute an automatic control system that will result in the U3O8 values on the resin and in the barren solution being maintained at or near the target values in spite of changes in the concentration of uranium in the feed solution.

The construction of one of the world's largest goldrecovery plants to treat run-of-mine ore is progressing on schedule at the President Brand Gold Mine in the Orange Free State. Designed to treat 390 kt per month, the plant will recover 96 per cent of the gold from the ore at a capital cost of 160 million rands in terms of January 1983 money. It will replace the existing gold-treatment installation, as well as provide a 30 per cent increase in capacity. The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.

Discussion M. J. Martinson* (Associate Member): This is another interesting paper in the series which the Human Sciences Laboratory is publishing on the physiological cost of the more strenuous manual tasks performed underground. As a mining engineer-albeit presently an academic one -this contributor is more concerned with the practical significance of the study in the field of stope cleaning than with physiological niceties, but before discussing some of the practical issues raised by the paper perhaps the authors would care to reply to lay comment on three physiological matters. Firstly, in two places the authors make statements to the effect that the maximum oxygen intake of 'average' (sic) Bantu mine workers is 3.0 l/min. What do the authors mean by 'average'? Maximum oxygen intake in the individual is probably some function of inter alia age, physical fitness, state of health, ambient partial pressure of oxygen, diurnal and/or seasonal changes in metabolism, and possibly cumulative exposure to dust and other occupational contaminants. Since maximum oxygen intake is apparently such an important quality in manual labourers we ought to have a clear picture of its distribution in the entire labour force, and also know precisely how the individual's quantum is affected by factors such as those mentioned above. Secondly, arising out of the same statements and ignoring the reservation implicit in the previous paragraph, is it correct to say that the 'average' Bantu mine worker has a maximum intake of 3.0 l/min? In the August 1966 issue of the South African Journal of Science four of the present co-authors reported the mean maximum oxygen intake of a random sample of 338 Bantu recruits of different tribes to be 2.63 l/min with a standard deviation of 0.542 l/min, and these figures were repeated in a paper published in the November 1968 issue of this Journal. Admittedly the mean maximum oxygen intake of the six subjects used in the present study was 3.05 l/min, but since they were selected on the grounds of previous shovelling experience they can hardly be regarded as being 'average' recruits. Thirdly, it seems to me that the authors are perhaps a little uncritical in their acceptance of the '50 per cent of maximum oxygen intake' level of activity for endurance work. I am not unmindful of the evidence upon which this level is based, but I suggest that the evidence is at best tenuous and that the whole topic of fatigue and 'optimum' levels of productivity under conditions of high muscular activity and considerable psychological stress is a lot more complicated than would appear from the authors' ready acceptance of the 50 per cent level. Under present working conditions the question is largely rhetorical because it would need an army of supervisors to ensure that all members of a typical gang work at 'optimum' levels throughout the shift, but if individual performance should ever become more readily determinable the issue might become crucial to management and malayisha alike. So much for physiological matters; now a few random thoughts on some wider, practical issues raised by the paper. In the paragraph headed Material the statement is made that 'The mixture (of fine, medium-sized and bigger rocks) was considered to be representative of an average underground rock sample'. Elsewhere in the report the authors specifically draw attention to the effect of particle size on the oxygen consumption of men shovelling graded material, and intuitively one imagines that the size distribution of the material being shovelled would be highly significant in a study such as this. Presumably the authors were forced to assess size distribution subjectively because of the lack of objective data on the subject, and possibly the necessity for this assumption highlights how little we know quantitatively about any of the variables in stope cleaning systems. In this connection it may be remarked that although the present study was largely designed to show how dip and stoping width effect energy expenditure in shovelling, no data are given-nor, probably, are they available-to show how the industry's stoping tonnage is distributed in terms of these two factors. It seems to me that if the mining industry seriously hopes to improve stope productivity it must start by measuring the basic variables in existing systems. Elaborating somewhat on the previous paragraph, there also seems to be a tremendous gap between the present study-and its predecessors-and the prospect of gainfully using the information so carefully garnered by the authors. It would be reassuring to hear from the authors that their work on the physiological aspects is being integrated in some master plan for increasing productivity of manual labour. This I fear is not the case, and if productivity has changed at all in recent years I would hazard a guess that the change has been brought about by random factors rather than by systematic engineering design. The Human Sciences Laboratory has worked extensively in stopes in the past, and possibly the time has come when it should widen the ambit of its operations to include engineering-type analyses of cleaning systems, with particular emphasis on the economics of rapid cleaning by manual labour. Perhaps experiments could be conducted with stakhanovite-type gangs consisting of men selected for their high maximum oxygen intake and superior motivation; these men might be offered special incentives in the shape of extra pay

An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits in South Africa are the largest in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular ore bodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Crush pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. These pillars are designed to fail and the residual strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the in situ measurement, of stress within a Merensky pillar from Impala Platinum. These measurements were used to derive a stress-strain curve that includes pre and post failure behaviour. 2D FLAC modelling, with strain softening, was done to investigate how damage expands into the hanging- and/or footwall. Although the so-called ?squat? effect is always present, the modelling suggests that it does not dominate the pillar system behaviour at larger width to height ratios. Punching of the pillar into the hanging- and/or footwall increasingly controls the pillar system behaviour with larger width to height ratios. The paper investigates the behaviour of a system that incorporates the immediate hanging- and footwall, as well as the pillar itself.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS Given by Mr J. K. E. DOUGLAS, M.Se. (Eng.) (Rand) SYNOPSIS Lime is the most widely used and the cheapest chemical alkali known to man and virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture. Its use goes back to the earliest days of man and many ancient buildings and writings bear testimony to this. The manufacture of lime involves quarrying, crushing and screening of limestone and the burning of the sized stone in kilns of which there are several types. The earliest kilns were of very crude design and only in comparatively recent times have large capacity, automated and scientifically controlled kilns been developed. The history of the South African lime industry is largely that of the three main lime companies and their story is briefly told. No other material used in industry has a greater diversity of uses or more varied functions and lime has applications in most South African industries. The main applications are in the production of gold and uranium, iron, steel and ferrochrome, carbide, sugar and paper and for water treatment, agriculture and building. The Republic is well endowed with high quality limestone and the conclusion is drawn that many other minerals will have been exhausted before we run out of limestone with which to process them. The expansion of the lime industry has in the past kept pace with the requirements of industry and the future demand is expected to grow in parallel with the growth of these industries. Since the war this growth has been phenomenal and with our expanding populations and abundance of raw materials it should continue in the years ahead. Limiting factors are the shortage of skilled labour and the distance from export markets. Confidence is expressed that the challenges of the future will be met and that the lime industry will continue to make an important contribution to the growth and prosperity of South Africa. INTRODUCTION Lime, gentlemen, is known to all of you. Like myself, most of you have undoubtedly found it to be, on the appropriate occasion, a most pleasant flavouring for gin. But this lime, or rather its juice, was in earlier days more than just a flavouring. In the days of sail it was vital to the health of sailors as a deterrant against the scourge of all sea-going men-scurvy. It thus played a small but important role in the opening-up of trade routes around the world on which was based the original wealth of many of today's more advanced nations. I propose to address you on the subject of lime this evening, not the citrus variety I have just mentioned, but the most widely-used and cheapest alkali known to man, which, largely unsung, plays an even more vital part in modern industry than did its namesake in the development of inter-continental trade. In the time at my disposal, I propose to tell you something of the history, geology and technology of lime manufacture. Then I will briefly sketch for you the development of this industry in South Africa and indicate the role it plays in supplying the requirements of many of our important industries. Finally we will attempt to look into the future. The importance of this chemical alkali to our modern civilization is seldom fully appreciated-virtually every product we use or eat has required lime in some phase of its manufacture, either directly or indirectly. It is one of those basic materials, along with iron, coal, sulphur, salt and petroleum without which industry and, in fact, our modern way of living could not exist. Fortunately, nature has endowed the world with a plentiful supply of the limestone from which lime is derived and most countries have deposits adequate for their requirements. As a result, not only has there been little trade in lime products between countries but in the past the widespread occurrences of limestone have set a pattern of numerous small plants each serving a limited area. These plants were generally crude affairs incapable of producing a quality product. It is not surprising that, in an industry comprised of small producers with limited financial resources and in fierce competition with each other, there was little interchange of information. Technological development was therefore slow and the industry tended to be regarded as a backyard operation. Its popularity was not enhanced by the fact that lime is difficult and unpleasant to handle if proper facilities are not provided. In recent years the lime industry has undergone very radical changes to meet the more exacting requirements of today's more sophisticated consumers. Only since the war have the larger companies emerged with proper management, highly mechanized plants and a scientific approach. HISTORY Lime was one of the first chemical reagents used by man and consequently lime burning is one of the oldest of the chemical industries. The use of limestone dates back to the stone age when primitive man used limestone to build fireplaces, construct shelters and make crude tools and weapons. It is probable that lime was first discovered by him when the stone in these fireplaces disintegrated to a white powder which he could use for decorative purposes. The first recorded use of limestone was when huge blocks of limestone were used to build the pyramids of Egypt in 4,000 to 2,000 RC. It was not long after this that the beauty of marble, which is in fact a limestone, came to be appreciated and it found wide application in sculpturing and for decorative wall construction. Originally lime, mixed with sand, was used mainly as a mortar for building purposes, the earliest record of its use for chemical purposes being in 350 B.C. in a report of the wreck near Marseilles of a ship carrying a cargo of linen and lime 'for its bleaching'1. Cato mentioned the burning of lime kilns in 184 B.C. and the Romans made extensive use of both limestone and lime for highway construction. In the field of high temperature smelting processes there have been two dramatic changes in the past twenty years. These are, first, the application of tonnage oxygen for direct injection for the refining of molten iron and other metals and to provide the means of enriching air used for the combustion of fuel. Second, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures in place of the combustion of fossil fuels. Of these two developments the application of tonnage oxygen for the refining of molten iron has virtually revolutionised the steel industry throughout the world. The magnitude of this development is exemplified by the fact that less than 5 per cent of the world's steel production in 1960 was made by this process or 16 million tons out of a total of 350 million tons of steel produced, while in 1970 over 40 per cent of the world steel production was made by this process, ie, 251 million tons out of 628 million tons total. In the same period the proportion of steel produced by the old-established open-hearth process has shrunk from 75 per cent to 38 per cent. In the whole history of the development of high temperature metallurgical smelting processes there has never been anything remotely approaching this. The other development, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures has not had the impact of the oxygen injection process but I believe that what we should call the electric smelting revolution in metallurgical processes has very far-reaching ramifications for steel production and other pyrometallurgical processes. This may seem a bold and brash statement but it must be remembered that the oxygen injection process constitutes a link in the chain critically dependent upon the production of vast tonnages of molten iron from very large modern blast furnaces. The Achilles heel of this chain of processes, upon which such a large percentage of the world's supply of steel depends, is the availability of metallurgical coke in turn dependent on natural resources of coking coal. Without any exception each industrial country in the world faces a shortage of resources of coking coal and in some cases a critical shortage. Certainly within the present century the major iron and steel producing countries of the world will face this critical shortage of coking coal and major modifications to steel making processes will become inevitable. W. F. Cartwright (Deputy Chairman of B.S.C) said recently that there are considerable doubts as to whether the world will be able to provide enough coking coal to meet world steel demands from the late 1970's onwards if the B.F.remains the main means for making iron from ore. This is one of the supreme ironies of the world metallurgical situation to-day when the technology of iron and steel production has reached an extremely high peak of technical efficiency. The newest modern iron blast furnace capable of producing 6 000 to 8 000 tons per day of molten iron represents probably the most efficient piece of high temperature metallurgical plant and operation known to man. The conversion of this molten iron into steel by the oxygen injection process has made available to the engineering industry steel of a quality and at a price which is quite remarkable. Yet this vast metallurgical pyramid rests on the completely insecure and uncertain foundation of inadequate world resources of coking coal. The shortage of reserves of coking coal in this country is acute and it is possible that these resources will be exhausted within the next twenty years. Yet unless some completely unexpected catastrophe occurs the demand for steel in this country will probably rise at a faster rate than in the Western world due to the expansion of the Bantu population and the increased standard of living. To offset the inevitable shortage of coking coal are our much greater resources of bituminous coal which although of low grade provide a suitable fuel for electric power generation. The geographical disposition of the coal fields in relation to the great industrial areas of the Transvaal makes it inevitable that the development of the pyrometallurgical industries must depend heavily on electric power. The position in this country with regard to electrical power generation and consumption is rather anomalous. Per capita consumption of electric power is high - in 1964 almost twice the world average of 870 KWH and twenty-five times the average of 34 KWH for the Continent of Africa. In 1964 fifty-four per cent of the total world electric power was used in industry - the ratio being approximately 1/9 mining to manufacturing uses. As shown in Table I in 1969 67.2 per cent of the total output of electric power from ESCOM was used for mining and other industrial uses but almost in the ratio 6/4 mining to industrial uses. These figures emphasise the enormous importance of the mining industry to the economy of this country and underline the major contribution made by the gold mining industry. What is of very significant importance is that although the mining industry remains by far the largest single consumer of electrical power the consumption of power for industrial uses is rising rapidly as shown in Table II.

Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. The aim of this work was to compare the corrosion behaviour of thermal spray WC ? based coatings before and after annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the phases present in the coatings at various stages. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion (quantified by corrosion current density) and immersion corrosion tests showed that annealing appears to decrease the corrosion resistance of the coatings. From the XRD results it was determined that the phases that corroded preferentially were cobalt (Co), eta (Co6W6C) and W2C. Keywords: Corrosion, thermal spray, coatings, hardmetals.

The susceptibility of experimental low-nickel Cr-Mn-N stainless steels to hot cracking, sensitization, and pitting corrosion in the as-welded condition was investigated. These steels were developed for deep-drawing applications and are similar in composition to type 201 stainless steel. In order to obtain good formability, the rapid rate of work-hardening (characteristic of the 200-series steels) was decreased by the addition of copper. The behaviour of two sets of alloys during fusion welding was investigated: 17Cr-7Mn-4Ni-o.5Cu steels containing 0.001 to 0.27 per cent nitrogen, and 17Cr-7Mn-2Ni-o.1N steels with copper contents varying between 0.01 and 3.11 per cent. Al the steels in these two sets initially solidify as d-ferrite, which transforms partially to austenite during cooling. As the nitrogen level increases, the microstructure of an autogenous-weld metal ranges from large amounts of d -ferrite, martensite, and Widmanstätten austenite, to austenitic structures with small amounts of vermicular d -ferrite. The formation of d -ferrite during solidification and the presence of ferrite retained in the weld metal indicate that the experimental alloys will not be susceptible to hot cracking during welding. Except for the alloy with 0.27 per cent nitrogen, the resistance to pitting corrosion of the experimental steels in the as-welded condition is inferior to that of type 304 stainless steel. None of the experimental steels is susceptible to intergranular attack in the as welded condition. The alloys with 0.19 and 0.27 per cent nitrogen have properties (corrosion and microstructure) similar to those of type 304 stainless steel in the as-welded condition.

Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust, and in its purest form has a tin content of 78,6 per cent. South Africa has limited deposits of the mineral, and by its exploitation contributes about 2 per cent of the world's production. This paper gives a brief history of tin mining in South Africa, which dates back almost 3000 years. Over the intervening years, many tin-mining operations have flourished and as quickly disappeared. At present there are only three tin mines in operation, and a description is given of the methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting that are used. The properties and uses of tin are listed, together with relevant statistics.

Column flotation has been developed over the past ten years as an alternative to conventional flotation. It has been used mainly in the cleaning applications of sulphide flotation, where its ability to wash the froth of entrained gangue and produce a higher-grade product has given it a distinct advantage over other technology. The benefits of column flotation can be summarized as follows: Improved concentrate gradeby 2 to 5 per cent . Significantly lower operating costs . Savings in capital investment . Superior control. Since the initial development of the equipment, a number of design improvements have been developed that now form the basis of the Cominco column-cell design. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of those design innovations, and present some typical industrial results.

The development of a cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant gravity concentrates is described. This work was carried out as a natural consequence of earlier improvements to the recovery of gold in the gravity sections of existing gold plants. Concern about the environmental aspects of the conventional amalgamation process was further motivation in the development of an alternative procedure. It was found that the partial pressure of oxygen in solution was the most critical reactionrate determining factor. The rate of gold dissolution was shown to be controlled by the reaction rate below approximately 25°C and by diffusion above that temperature. Thus, the efficiency of pulp agitation and oxygen partial pressure permitted a high degree of control over the rate of gold dissolution. The use of oxygen rather than air significantly increased the dissolution rate of both gold and silver. The solubilities of sodium, calcium, and potassium aurocyanide complexes under simulated reaction conditions were studied, and it was established that the values for the sodium and calcium complexes were limited, requiring the use of lower pulp densities and higher reaction temperatures for the treatment of very high-grade concentrates. The presence of excessive amounts of tramp iron in such concentrates of up to 25 per cent by mass was found to result in poor gold dissolution owing to the cementation of gold under certain reaction conditions. The maintenance of high oxygen partial pressures, together with high cyanide concentrations, high pH levels, and the presence of calcium in the system, all aided in passivating the tramp iron. Copper, gold, and iron were shown to be the main cyanide-consuming elements. Optimum gold dissolution was obtained in a closed bench-scale reactor incorporating a flotation-machine type of agitator for effective pulp agitation and oxygenation, the oxygen being recirculated. The reactor was designed to operate under a very small positive pressure. After reaction times of 2 to 6 hours at temperatures in the region of 30°C, both the gold and the silver dissolution averaged 99,S per cent. In the case of very high-grade concentrates, it was shown that gold could be floated in the same reactor by drawing off the flotation concentrate through a port in the reactor. A flotation recovery of 87,4 per cent of the gold in 3,9 per cent by mass was obtained. The recovery of osmiridium from cyanide-leach residues and the electrowinning of gold from the pregnant liquors were also considered as processing aspects in the treatment of gold-plant belt concentrates. Final table tailings with a gold concentration of 10to 12 gft were obtained. The results of the investigation strongly suggested that an alternative cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant concentrates was technically feasible, provided the system included effective agitation and oxygenation. In the case of lower-grade concentrates, cyanidation followed by the electrowinning of gold appears to be the simplest route, while, for high-grade concentrates, flotation and smelting of the concentrate followed by cyanidation of the flotation tailings are suggested. The use of oxygen rather than air for sparging the pulp would depend largely on the grade of material to be treated. A preliminary comparison of the costs related to the amalgamation and cyanidation processes for the recovery of gold from such concentrates indicated very similar capital and operating costs. It was concluded that other considerations, e.g. toxicity, safety, and lower labour requirements, were more important than such small cost differences. Furthermore, the 'opening' of the gold-plant gravity circuit, which would be made possible by a cyanidation route, would further reduce the operating costs because of the subsequent decrease in the tonnage to be treated.
