During the last 12 months, Sandvik?s Technical Service Group has carried out nine Scoping and Pre-feasibility studies for the application of In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) for large mining companies; the majority in conjunction with the Snowden Consulting Group. During these studies several key and recurring drivers have been identified: 1. Mining schedule issues ? there are several issues which crop up repeatedly, including: ?the unnecessary curvature of pit walls, ?very high rates of vertical advance which are (created by schedule optimisers to minimise stripping at all times) which are at the limit of what can be realistically achieved (and which of course make it harder for IPCC to achieve any impact), and ?The allocation of material to semi-mobile systems to maximise the ability for IPCC to be an effective alternative. 2. IPCC productivity issues ? the key issues are the IPCC system operating hours achievable, and the system throughput (both instantaneous and the average). 3. IPCC Risk issues ? there are perceptions about the risks associated with the use of IPCC which are a mix of reality and fiction, but which nonetheless create negativity towards the use of IPCC. In this paper, the authors wish to address specifically the factors affecting the IPCC productivity.

In the copper electrorefining process, the dissolution of anodes is significantly reduced or even stopped when the passivation phenomenon occurs. The results of this phenomenon are increasing energy consumption, residual formatting, and voltage levels in the cell. In this study, the electrochemical behaviour of blister copper in the presence of sodium persulfate (PDS) was studied. The electrochemical methods of LPR, Tafel, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The results showed that the addition of sodium persulfate activates the electrode surface and increases the open circuit potential. In the presence of PDS, the polarisation resistance of the electrode shows an increasing or decreasing tendency, based on the PDS concentration. This tendency is probably due to the formation of surface layers (such as slime layer or copper sulfate) and dissolution of this layer at various concentrations of PDS. The lowest polarisation resistance of 1.8 ohms and the highest corrosion current of 60.6×10-3 and 36.6×10-3 A/cm2 from LPR and Tafel techniques respectively were obtained at the concentration of 40 g/l PDS. Based on the results of potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, the addition of sodium persulfate to the solution reduces the corrosion resistance, therefore the passivation time of the blister copper anode increases. The historical development of materials engineering in the mining industry Is briefly reviewed, and some of the factors currently influencing the industry in South Africa are discussed. Material usages in various parts of the mining operation are surveyed. The predominant mechanisms in the degradation of materials in mines are wear, corrosion, and fatigue. The issue of corrosion-abrasion Is considered, but it Is concluded that abrasive wear predominates in most rock-handling and comminution applications and that, in general, little economic benefit Is to be gained in those applications by the use of existing corrosion-resistant alloys. However, alloys with a measure of corrosion resistance find profitable application elsewhere in the mining environment. The use of other engineering materials such as polymers, ceramics, al1l1inium, and various ferrous alloys may be economically viable in a variety of niche situations. Identification of the most cost-effective material in each case calls for a systematic approach and some patience.

Tornados are the most violent weather events in the world, and we have all seen the forces and phenomena created by tornados in nature. Airgrinder AB has been working with a material treatment technology, which most easily could be described as an artificial tornado. The process consists principally of one air fan providing a high-velocity airstream that enters a mechanical cyclone. When the gas enters the cyclone, an outer vortex is created. This outer vortex rotates next to the cyclone wall, and at the bottom of the cyclone funnel the gas stream is turned and an inner vortex is created. The control of the air flow is tuned by a special device on top of the cyclone. The gas outlet is at the top of the cyclone and the material outlet at the bottom. The material is fed through a feeding device into the air stream channel prior to the inlet into the cyclone. The process is basically an improved grinding and dehydrating system, which is very efficient and environmentally friendly and can even be employed with very sticky materials. Also due to its rotating comminution, the material particles become rounded during grinding, hence more free flowing and easier to handle. MEFOS has already tested more than 30 different applications in the pilot equipment. The materials tested range from metallurgical slags containing 2?3% moisture to sludges with up to70% moisture. This technology has a potentially strong impact on mineral beneficiation, including the drying of sticky fine-grained materials, improved and selective gas scrubbing and the manufacture of free flowing powders.

An account is given of the performance of a 37 MVA electric-arc .furnace in which bottom stirring with inert gas by an indirect-contact stirring-plug system was applied. The system, which was developed and patented by Thyssen-Stahl AG, and which is the first inert gas stirring system to be installed in South Africa, was commissioned in January 1992. Initial problems were experienced due to the blockage of stirring plugs by molten steel. The causes of these malfunctions are examined, and an account is given of how they were overcome. The system is described and evaluated. A comparison with direct-contact stirring systems shows why Iscor Vereeniging Works considered it to be more suitable for their Vaal Melt Shop. The results show that, through the successful application qf this technology, Iscor Vereeniging Works has achieved an annual cost saving of more than R2,5 million.

KLAPWIJK INTRODUCTION It has often been stated that it is hardly possible in South Africa to classify Bantumade iron hoes according to their places of origin and manufacture. It is well known that these hoes were used for barter, and as currency in the purchase of livestock or the payment of lobolo, although reports of the value of the hoes differ widely. The difficulty in their classification has arisen from their distribution over a very wide area.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women?s employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

This paper describes the metallurgical aspects and properties of a duplex austenitic-ferritic steel SAF 2205. As well as having high yield strength and hardness, SAF 2205 combines the high resistance of ferritic stainless steels to chloride-induced stress-corrosion cracking and the excellent resistance of austenitic stainless steels to hydrogen-induced stress-corrosion cracking. Its alloying elements contribute to its mechanical and corrosion properties as follows: nitrogen increases its pitting potential and improves its strength, nickel increases its resistance to pitting and its toughness, chromium and molybdenum give improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. SAF 2205 has better resistance than steel types 316 Land 317 L both to pitting corrosion and to stress-corrosion. This makes it a very good material for pipes, tanks, and pumps in harsh environments such as those in petrochemical and desalination plants.

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is abetter indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

The nature of the coal and of the roof in No. 3 seam at Coal brook Collieries is such as to preclude the use, during bord and pillar mining, of conventional mining equipment that employs cutting and blasting in its production cycle. Continuous mining machines of the borer type, operating within a mining height range of 1,9-2,3 m, have been successfully employed in No. 3 seam since 1957.The experience gained with this type of equipment, the operational methods adopted, and the results achieved are described. The ventilation method used to eliminate the dust and methane hazards created by this type of equipment is stressed. The limitation on the minimum mining height that can be obtained with the borers in use has lead to the recent introduction of a Rotary Drum type of continuous mining machine. This equipment is capable of operating in areas where the seam width decreases to 1,5m. The production potential of the machine has been proved. The roof conditions created by the cutting action of the Rotary Drum type of miner are not considered satisfactory and a modified drum head profile is to be tried.

Tunnel 99’, the Swedish National Road Administration´s (SNRA) general technical specification for road tunnels requires that the load bearing system must be designed to withstand specified design explosion loads. This paper presents the results of an SNRA study to provide a perspective of design analyses tailored to comply with the new requirement. The paper provides an example of a design analysis for assumed tunnel conditions using a numerical model. Dynamic predictions of potential damage to the rock mass and ground support system (rock bolts and shotcrete) from the specified explosion loads are presented including the nonlinear response of the shotcrete. “Tunnel 99”, qui fixe les règles de l’Administration nationale suédoise des Routes (Vägverket) concernant la conception et la construction des tunnels routiers, requiert entre autres que la structure porteuse soit capable de résister à certaines contraintes spécifiques résultant d’explosions. Cette étude présente les résultats d’une étude effectuée par Vägverket en vue d’obtenir une perspective d’analyses de conception spécialement élaborées pour se conformer aux nouvelles règles. Il contient un exemple d’analyse en fonction de conditions déterminées, basée sur un modèle numérique. Des prévisions de’études dynamiques de dommages potentiels subis par la masse rocheuse et les systèmes de soutènement (boulons d’ancrage et béton projeté) du fait des contraintes libérées par la force d’explosion spécifiée sont également présentées, y compris dans le cas d’une réaction non linéaire du revêtement en béton. “Tunnel 99” - die Vorschriften für Strassentunnel der Nationalen Schwedischen Behörde für Straßenwesen - (Vägverket) - fordern vom Tragsystem eine Auslegung in der Form, dass es spezifischen Explosionsbelastungen standhält. Dieser Artikel präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Studie der Behörde, um einen Ausblick über konstruktive Auslegungen zu geben, die geeignet sind, die neuen Vorschriften zu erfüllen. Der Artikel zeigt ein Beispiel einer konstruktive Auslegung für eine angenommene Tunnelsituation mit Hilfe eines numerischen Modells. Voraussagen unter Beachtung der vollständigen dynamischen Berechnung zu potentiellen Schädigungen des Gebirges und des Ausbaus (Anker und Spritzbetonauskleidung) durch die spezifizierten Explosionsbelastungen, einschließlich des nichtlinearen Verhaltens der Spritzbetonauskleidung, werden gezeigt.

Anglo Platinum's Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex. Approximately 60% of the total concentrate received is from UG2 Reef, and 40% is from Merensky Reef. The concentrate is dried in two flash dryers, and smelted in a single 168 MVA furnace. A PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is cast, crushed and transported to Rustenburg for converting. The plant was commissioned in March 2003. The wet concentrate, containing 12-18% moisture, is weighed, sampled by one of two auger samplers, and off-loaded into a concentrate shed, either directly through a grizzly into a hopper, or onto the floor. From the shed the concentrate is conveyed to 12 concrete silos. Each of the two identical flash dryers can be fed from six silos. From the flash dryers concentrate is transported pneumatically to a 3 000-ton dry concentrate storage silo. The flash dryers are rated at a nominal 66 tph of dry concentrate at 14% moisture, while the furnace can smelt 90 tph of dry concentrate. Therefore both flash dryers are required to operate when the furnace runs at design throughput. Each flash dryer consists of a hot gas generator (HGG), a disintegrator and drying column, and a section for gas/solids separation. In the HGG, gas heated up to 700° C is produced from the combustion of coal peas in a fluidized sand bed. The hot gas and wet concentrate are introduced to the disintegrator at the bottom of the drying column. The disintegrator breaks up any lumps of concentrate, and throws the concentrate up into the drying column, where it travels co-currently with the hot gas. A fan draws the hot gas from the drying column and through the gas/solids separation section, which consists of three primary cyclones, a multiclone and a high-temperature bag house. The dry concentrate reports to a 450-ton dry concentrate storage bin. A portion of dry concentrate is recycled to the wet concentrate feed in a paddle mixer, so that concentrate that is too wet does not enter the disintegrator. The drying column outlet temperature is controlled at 120° C. Coal is received by road, screened for oversize and conveyed to a 400-ton concrete silo. From here it is pneumatically conveyed to a small feed bin at each of the HGG' s. The optimization work consists of process control improvements relating to the HGG outlet temperature, to control the drying column temperature during the ramp-up of the HGG outlet temperature and bag filters. Furthermore a heat balance is used to evaluate options to increase the instantaneous drying capacity of the existing equipment. The coal consumption derived from the heat balance is compared with the actual coal consumption. The purpose of the optimization work is to achieve an operating schedule for the flash dryers such that they operate simultaneously for as short time as possible. Most of the time one flash dryer should operate, allowing maintenance to be done on the other flash dryer, while drawing down the dry concentrate stock. The geological conditions in the Vierfontein area ~re such that conventional pillar extraction ~stooping) cannot be practised safely or efficiently. Both the open-end lift and the pocket-and-fender methods of pillar extraction have been tried with little success because of problems with roof control and ground stability. The main reasons for the difficulties are the coarse-grained sandstone roof, local weaknesses in the coal seam, and the rate at which the pillars were extracted. The mine has practised bord-and-pillar mining since it started production in 1952, and considerable reserves of coal are contained in the pillars. As an alternative to total pillar extraction, in which hand-loading methods were practised, a system of partial pillar extraction using mechanized-mining methods ~11"modified goaf-line support has been evolved. These remnant coal pillars (snooks) remaining after partial extraction ofthe pillar, together with the installation of 1,2 m" matpacks and a double line of fullcolumn resin roofbolts, ensure control of the edge of the area that has been mined out (goaf). Where roof conditions preclude the use of conventional pillar-extraction methods, this method holds promise as a safe and efficient alternative for the recovery of coal from pillars and for an increase in the volumetric extraction of the reserves within a mining panel.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,400. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Associate Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. Affiliates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Affiliate, is at the time of his application, already a Student member, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. Graduate Members shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which the attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate.
