Exceptionally low yields in the coking-coal fields of the Soutpansberg area in the northern Transvaal, are taxing the skill and ingenuity of preparation engineers. The coals are highly intergrown, and a series of crushing and washing steps may be required to extract the maximum usable tonnage. In addition, novel preparation techniques may have to be employed. This paper, which is a case study of work recently undertaken, gives a general account of raw coal properties, emphasizing those related to maximum recoveries, and outlines the steps involved in the design of appropriate flow sheets based on laboratory studies.

You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. "Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

The phases in a project, particularly the early phases, are examined, and project organization is described and contrasted with a functional line-management type of organization. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive definition, which is vitally important to the achievement of the goals of time, cost, and quality set for a project.

Colloquium and General Meeting A General Meeting and Colloquium was held on 'New Advances in Non-ferrous Pyrometallurgy' in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 17th March, 1976. MacGillivray Mr President and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate the authors on presenting a most interesting paper on a very important subject. After several attempts at finding suitable reserves to extend the life of Welgedacht Exploration Company's Utrecht Colliery a block of coal rights was acquired south west of the town of Utrecht. A study of these reserves showed that they would enable a satisfactory return on capital invested to be achieved. It was decided therefore to open up what is now called the Zimbutu section of Welgedacht Exploration Company, to produce 41 000 metric tons of coal per month. The decision to open this section was taken in August, 1968 and due to certain allocation requirements it was necessary to bring it into production by the 1st of January, 1970. Fortunately a fair amount of statistical data had been collected prior to August, 1968 from the old Utrecht Colliery in anticipation of opening a mine and a fairly detailed rechnical report had been prepared. As a result the dead line was only missed by four days. Main features of the Design A feasibility study was carried out on three possible shaft positions and the final position was selected from these three on economic grounds. As the coal seam at the selected shaft position was only 21 metres below the surface it was decided to sink two twin incline shafts to enable rapid establishment of through ventilation and alternative hauling arrangements for quick development. This also allowed the final vertical ventilation shaft to be placed at some distance away to avoid the nuisance of fan noise. Second outlet requirements are also very well met by these twin inclines. Again on the basis of economics and also due to the uncertainty of roof conditions it was decided to use hand loading methods underground. However, to allow for future possible conversion to mechanised loading, should this become economical through rising wages, a conveyor belt was installed in the hauling shaft. This conveyor belt is fed from an endless rope haulage in the east companion by means of tipplers, a bin and a feeder. The main development heading was left clear for the future installation of a conveyor belt which would afford easy conversion to mechanisation.

There is often a need to increase capacity through existing mist eliminator installations without significant tower modifications. Often there is not enough extra space outside existing vessels unless more expensive changes can be justified. Also, plant downtime must be considered. The challenge in retrofitting is to overcome velocity limitations inherent in the design while at the same time extend performance capability. The solution most often is to create new ways to add extra filter area while remaining constrained to the existing space. This strategy, however, can dangerously backfire if basic design principles are not followed. Mist eliminator design is a complex integration of many conflicting performance parameters. Often the objective is to increase scrubbing capacity while maximizing collection efficiency and service life and minimizing operating pressure drop (energy cost), particle regeneration (re-entrainment) and overall maintenance costs. Results of plant retrofitting using mesh pads, impaction fibre beds and diffusion fibre beds are presented based on actual plant projects. Often the retrofit project can be more effective by increasing the scope and combining other new plant equipment with the upgrade such as new tower components. In some cases, the type of mist eliminators can be upgraded from impaction type (velocity dependent) to Brownian diffusion type (velocity independent) if additional downstream protection or reduced emissions are desirable, especially at turndown rates. Trade-offs between different fibre bed types and styles are discussed as they relate to performance and maintenance.

Two very successful schools on 'The design and operation of plants for the recovery of gold by activated carbon', were held from 14th to 18th October, 1985, and from 24th to 27th February, 1986, at Mintek. They were arranged by the Institute in close co-operation with Mr. Peter Bailey of Gencor, who was course leader. Computers and mathematics APCOM 87, the 20th International Symposium of the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries, is to be held in Johannesburg from 19th to 23rd October, 1987. Interested people are invited to submit titles and synopses in any of the following topics or others. Papers can cover theoretical developments, practical applications, case studies, and software and hardware systems. Tunneling '88 The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy is pleased to announce the holding of 'Tunneling '88', the fifth international symposium and exhibition in the series, from 17th to 22nd April, 1988, at the Kensington Rainbow Exhibition Centre, London, England. Centenary exhibition and conference The major trade show to take place in the year of Johannesburg's centenary will be the 7th International Mining and Electrical Engineering Exhibition- ELECTRA MINING 86. The theory of firing of electric detonators is developed insofar as it affects the design of blasting circuits. Practical values for the firing conditions suited to detonators of local manufacture are tabulated. The design principles of blasting circuits are outlined. This information can be used by mine management to ensure that electric blasting will be done efficiently and economically.

Changes in the pattern of computer systems for mine planning and geologic evaluation are occurring as a consequence of the introduction of 3-D high performance graphics terminals. The VULCAN system is described and an outline of its functionality is discussed. Increasingly, the integration of both database systems and graphics and databases will occur, allowing a greater degree of information access to mine operators. The system covers areas of database, drillhole graphics, mine design and layout, surface and solid modelling as well as reserve inventory generation. The design of the software is such that it is fairly commodity-independent and entirely menu-driven, to enable non computer-trained personnel easily to access the system.

The diamond-drilling machine has for many years been the most important exploration tool In the search for and subsequent evaluation of Witwatersrand-type ore deposits. With a view to increasing the range of services that can be provided and, at the same time, counteracting rising drilling costs, new techniques are continuously being developed. Many of these techniques have equal application in surface and in underground exploration. This paper reviews drilling techniques such as non-coring pilot holes and deep wire-line drilling, as well as the design of core-barrels and drilling bits to cater for the specific nature of the job on hand. Special drilling fluids and aluminium rods to assist in normal drilling operations are also discussed. Special mention is made of a bore hole's natural tendency to deviate in a certain direction. The factors that cause deviation are used to the advantage of controlled drilling techniques.

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

Reference is made to the approach to mine cooling in which the service water is used as one of the means of distributing refrigeration, and attention is drawn to various engineering disciplines or functions necessary for effective distribution and reticulation of cold water from refrigeration plant. The demand for service water is intermittent, the peak flow-rates being typically two to three times the average flowrate. The refrigeration plant, on the other hand, must preferably be operated steadily throughout the day and night, with the result that a large storage dam for cold water must be incorporated into each system in order to even out the surge in demand for water. These dams should be operated as constant-temperature, variable-volume reservoirs. The conventional cascade system involving dams on each level is not the best for sending water down mines, and schemes are described that avoid the need for such dams. Reference is made to various tests that were carried out, and to several large systems that were installed. Management and organizational problems that could arise as a result of new technological developments in mine cooling are referred to, and cost figures are quoted to indicate the large potential savings, In addition to the improved environmental conditions, that can be achieved through the use of integrated water systems.

With a number of new mines at the feasibility stage and beyond and with several pellet capacity expansions well underway to reduce sintering activity, Alex Broad looks at the impact of worldwide environmental legislation on the iron ore industry. 'Environmental impact assessment' has become something of a buzz term in the metals and mining industry over the last few years and is sure to be an integral part of any green or brown-field project worldwide by the turn of the century, if it is not already. Given the number of iron ore projects springing up, most notably in deposit-blessed Australia, it is not surprising that the subject of environmental approval has been raising its green head. At the very least the process can slow down a new mine project, or at worst have it deemed unfeasible but in general a government is unlikely to put up unnecessary barriers to a project with the beneficial financial implications of an iron ore deposit.

Permitted explosives in South Africa are those explosives approved by the relevant State authority for use in fiery coal mines. The main tests that an explosive must pass for this approval are the gallery tests derived from the Buxton (U.K.) classification. These tests are described briefly. In addition, the safety of permitted explosives is affected by their ability to deflagrate, and to produce a naked flame after blasting, rather than to detonate fully. Tests done on this phenomenon are discussed. A further potential hazard of explosives is after-blast fume. The testing and behaviour of several permitted explosives in this respect are covered, both in the laboratory and in the field. Performance testing of permitted explosives, specifically the double-pipe, underwater, and ballistic mortar tests, and their relationship to field use, are considered in some detail. The application of traditional and new tests to permitted explosives leads to guidelines for the safe and efficient formulation and use of these products.
