The use of plastics in the coal mining industry is making slow progress whereas these materials could make a greater contribution to safety, to a reduction of working costs and to the higher productivity of mine workers. Possibly the reluctance to experiment with the new material of our age is due to the low profit margin of coal mining. This note has been prepared to present a brief survey of what has been done in the last few years and to mention some of the investigations the author has made and is making in an attempt to develop more use of plastics in the industry. Some of the plastics used on the mines have taken their place in the industry in the same manner that they are used in everyday life while others have been introduced because there has been a need for them. New uses and applications are being developed and these are the ones that are most interesting. The plastic that is specially developed to give the maximum benefit and not the one that is a modification of some other everyday product is the next development in the field. Many manufacturers are keen to promote such investigation but are not aware of the problems the mines wish to solve and therefore it is only through management itself that this development can be carried out. This note deals with plastic material under three headings: (a) Plastic as the superior material, and briefly describes how plastic has replaced a few major items which are better when made from plastic. (b) Plastics of necessity, being a short summary of how plastics had to be introduced because of laws and conditions making it a necessity. (c) Development of new ideas, being briefly some of the ideas being developed overseas and some of the ideas being tried by the author. Plastic items in common use such as in housing, electric cables, laboratory equipment, awnings, nylon bearings, locomotive brake linings, etc. being well known are not discussed. PLASTIC AS THE SUPERIOR MATERIAL Plastic belting underground Following a fire in a belt road in England resulting in the deaths of many workers, and subsequently a fire accompanied by fatalities in a belt road in a mine in this country, a law was introduced which states that only flameproof belting is to be used underground. This ruling forced the mines to use P.V.A. belting as no other was available. This belting has non-inflammable characteristics that are superior to rubber. Due to the high tension on long-distance belts used today the need for stronger belting material called for something better than cotton and the answer to this was nylon. Nylon also has the ability to withstand dry-rot which reduces the life of a belt very quickly.

This paper captures the essential steps employed in developing Outotec?s new FloatForceTM mechanism. The development of a flotation mechanism essentially revolves around the efficient transfer of installed power, or capital cost, to optimum flotation performance. Optimum flotation performance will be achieved if a balance between metallurgical results, operating and capital costs is maintained. The development of the FloatForceTM mechanism was done by careful evaluation of each of these three areas. This paper focuses on how experience, CFD and laboratory equipment, pilot and plant tests are used to test and evaluate a new flotation mechanism. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. Metallurgical and mechanical design considerations are not covered in this paper. Besides using the FloatForceTM mechanism in new flotation equipment, the FloatForceTM mechanism can be used in existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented.

VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

The slags arising from ferrochromium plants were simulated by additions of CaO and Fe2O3 (6 per cent each), Cr2O3 (7 and 12 per cent), and Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 together (6 and 12 per cent respectively) to slags in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. These additions were made to slags having an SiO2 content of 45 per cent and an MgO-to-Al2O3 ratio of 4 to 3 or 3 to 4. The effect of these oxide additions on the liquidus temperatures, electrical conductivities, and viscosities was determined. The additions of CaO and Fe2O3, although having little effect on liquidus temperatures, decreased viscosity and increased electrical conductivity. The addition of Cr2O3 raised the liquidus temperatures considerably, and tended to decrease viscosity in the temperature range 1 700 to 1 800°C and to increase electrical conductivity.

Discussion: M. D. G. Salamon* (Fellow): The theoretical principles behind the techniques of calculation used by the authors was formulated and published during the period 1962- 65. These principles, together with their practical implications, were summarized in a review paper in 1966.1 Now, in February, 1970, we have this long and comprehensive paper discussing the practical application of the theory. I think this is good progress. The large number of practical examples treated in the paper clearly demonstrates not only the skill and knowledge of the authors, but also the versatility of the techniques of analysis. I feel that the techniques described by the authors, and their improved versions, will revolutionize mine planning. I suggest that no shaft system or stoping layout should be planned in future without an adequate rock mechanics analysis. It seems that it will be progressively more difficult to white wash mistakes in rock mechanics and attribute their costly outcome to normal mining risk. We should not, however, become complacent. There is still a lot to learn and do in the future. I do not want to discuss tonight the question of further research but instead, I will raise two other problems which may hinder the future progress of practical rock mechanics. To carry out work similar to that described in the paper, mine managements require men who are capable of doing the work and who have the most efficient techniques of analysis at their disposal. As a research engineer I have been associated with the development of techniques of analysis. I can assure you that these have undergone an amazingly rapid development during the last six years. We have seen the change from the use of the electrolytic tank analogue and manual integration to the method described by the authors, that is, to the employment of the automatic network analogue and computer integration. But this is not the end. In a recent paper Prof R. P. Plewman2 and his co-authors described a completely digital technique. Here the process of calculating on- and off-reef quantities is integrated into one computer run. But these sophisticated methods of computation are useless without men to make intelligent use of them. During the last few years a new breed of mining engineers has appeared on the scene - the Rock Mechanics Engineer. I feel it is timely to call the attention of the senior members of this Institute to the fact that this new breed will succeed in carrying out its duties in a valuable manner only if we manage to attract to its ranks young engineers of the right quality. The requirements are high. The top rock mechanics engineers have to be good mine planners and they have to understand the essence of sophisticated theories. Without these attributes they will not succeed in the long term and the industry will not gain the benefit of available knowledge. To attract this quality of engineers the industry will have to ensure that rock mechanics is accepted by all concerned as a career which could lead to the top echelons of our profession. Finally, I would like to make one or two remarks concerning Part I of the paper. In Sections 3.1 and 3.2 the authors describe methods of determining the normal stress on the reef plane and the convergence distribution in the excavations. The description as given applies only to a horizontal reef. When the reef is inclined the situation is more complex since a shear component of stress on the intact reef and a ride component in the excavations must then also be determined. These can be calculated by methods similar to that described in the paper.3 The practical application of the method of calculating the released energy (Section 3.4) is in the comparison of various stoping layouts to establish an order of preference in terms of decreasing rates of energy release. To carry out these comparisons effectively, the calculations must be carried out in a manner by which the values of energy per unit area obtained are comparable. I would like to note in this respect that the method of calculation given in the paper is valid without reservation only if there is no elastic contact between the hanging and foot walls in the mined-out area. If there is contact then the calculated energy values are correct only if the mined out area is increased in small steps during the analysis. My second point in this regard is concerned with the practical method of calculation as described in Sections 3.4 (ii)-(iii). Firstly, I would like to suggest that the energy calculation should be carried out, as far as possible, by using always the same scale on the analogue. Secondly, the reading of current on a pin should be followed by the removal of that pin to obtain the corresponding reading of potential. The product of these two values will be proportional to the energy released during the mining of the small area corresponding to that pin. The method suggested by the authors tends to mask possible danger points in the layouts, since they obtain an average value for a time period, say, for six months.

A computer system to store, retrieve and process coal borehole and analytical data together with other geological, geographical or topographical information is described. As a result of the large volume and variety of data stored since its inception in 1979, as well as the basic versatility of the system, the National Coal Data Base has been performing a number of new tasks for which it was not originally designed. As considerable sets of data are used on almost every project, the use of statistical application programs has become an important processing tool.

A technique for the measurement of slurry consistency inside a grinding mil is described. The rate of slurry drainage from a sensing probe mounted through the mil shell is measured and correlated with the percentage solids of the slurry discharging from the mil. The response time of the measurement(obtained on a pilot bal mil) is compared with the response time of the viscosity of the mill discharge. It is shown that the new measurement should allow much tighter control of the mil behaviour, with concomitant savings in the consumption of power and steel.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the adsorption of gold cyanide on carbon in the presence or absence of electrolytes and acids proceeds by the same mechanism. Although the identity of the gold cyanide adsorbate is not known, the mechanism appears to have an initial adsorption stage that involves the adsorption of an ion pair: Mn+[Au(CN)-2]n where Mn+ is a metal ion (for example Na+, K+ and Ca2+) that has a lower solubility than the Au(CN)-2 anion in the adsorption medium, followed by a reduction step in which either a sub-stoichiometric Au(CN)x surface species or a cluster-type compound of gold is formed.

Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

In initial laboratory tests with a travelling submerged jet on artificially prepared clay it was found that the cavity depth is dependent on the stagnation pressure of the jet and the undrained shear strength of the clay. In addition, it has been observed that the increase in cavity depth with jet pressure is stronger at higher jet pressures. It is assumed that this can be explained by cavitation of the jet at higher jet pressures. At cavitation a cone of bubbles is formed around the jet, which reduces the exchange of momentum between the jet and the surrounding water. This results in a higher jet velocity and a higher stagnation pressure at a specified distance from the nozzle exit. In literature, no relation between the jet pressure of a free submerged cavitating jet and stagnation pressures was found. Additional tests were carried out to determine this relationship. Because practical dredging occurs at relatively large water depths, these tests were performed in a pressure vessel at different pressure levels. It is concluded that the efficiency of a jet (defined as the stagnation pressure at a certain distance divided by the jet pressure), for stand-off-distances smaller than 45 times the nozzle diameter, increases significantly by cavitation in comparison to the non-cavitating situation. However, the jet pressure required for a fully developed cavitation cone increases strongly with water depth. At dredging depths of 20 m and more, the necessary jet pressures are higher than normally applied in dredging practice. Thus in spite of the importance of cavitation in laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure, in normal dredging practice cavitation is of less importance.

Tecflote is a new group of nitrile-based collectors for sulfide flotation. Water insolubility results in some interesting implications for the actual mechanism. It is not yet understood if Tecflote is directly adsorbed on the mineral surface as emulsion droplets or if it is only active at the air-water interface, affecting the interfacial rheology or electrostatic- and Van der Waals interactions, which have a direct impact on the bubble-particle contact. Different investigations including contact angle measurements, AFM studies and micro-flotation experiments are conducted to obtain a better understanding of the actual mechanism of Tecflote. Due to the reagent’s insoluble character, the Langmuir-Blodgett technique is used to investigate its behaviour in the air-water interface and to deposit defined layers of Tecflote on mineral substrates for the above-mentioned studies. An interferometric set up is used to investigate the influence of Tecflote on the film thinning between an air bubble and a mineral substrate. In addition, possible synergistic effects for the combination of Tecflote and conventional frothers (e.g. MIBC) are studied. Keywords: Sulfide flotation, insoluble collector

The Centenary Luncheon for Past Presidents was held on Thursday, 24 March, 1994 at The President's Room at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg at 12:30. Herewith the proceedings that followed. Dr H. Scot-Russell It is with great pleasure that my fellow Office Bearers and I welcome you, our Past Presidents, to this luncheon to mark the centenary of the SAIMM. Today one hundred years ago, a group of professionals met and agreed to draw up the constitution and by-laws of a society later to be called an Institute. The Presidents of the Institute, of course, become its Past Presidents and help to guide its progress. A number of our sister institutes cannot wait for their Past Presidents to move of their councils, and cannot understand how we can give such free reign to ours! We believe it one of our strengths. The successful cooperation between our Past Presidents and ourselves is due to the personalities of these men. They attend meetings not to ensure that the status quo is maintained, but allow the current Office Bearers freedom to lead the Institute as they think fit. But they are always present to give sound advice, a helping hand, and support to the Institute in every way.

This paper deals with the reticulation of deslimed tailings from surface to the stope face underground. Reference is made to the experience gained at the pilot plants operating on four of the gold mines administered by Gold Fields of South Africa, as well as at the full-scale system at East Driefontein which was commissioned recently. Mine-wide backfill systems are currently being installed on five other mines administered by Gold Fields. These six full-scale systems are capable of handling more than 270 000 tons of backfill solids per month. The type of reticulation system chosen, the selection of flowrates and the composition of the slurry, as well as the selection of the appropriate pipes and ancillary equipment are discussed. Both theoretical and practical aspects are taken into consideration. Other aspects covered include the design of underground storage dams and communication systems.

A 36-year-old A-S-H pump, manufactured to designs dating back to 1936, was recently presented to the Gold Mine Museum by Envirotech. The pump, a B-frame three-piece rubber-lined Hydroseal unit, was supplied by Envirotech's predecessor company, Denver Machinery, and was installed by South Roodepoort Main Reef Areas Limited on 22nd March, 1948. Metals, materials, manufacturing The 37th Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Metals will be held in Ballarat (Australia) from 13th to 17th May, 1985. 1985is the Sesquicentennial year of Victoria, and for the first time the historic City of Ballarat has been chosen as the venue for an Australasian Institute of Metals congress. Steel rolling Conferences on steel rolling, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISH), and supported by iron and steel institutes in many countries of the world, have been held since 1980. The first conference was held in Tokyo in 1980, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis, including a brief statement of conclusions. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler. H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory \matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.L) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, n, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and there. fore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .' . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publicatiol1 of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute asa body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. A class of gravity separation unit operations in ore-dressing relies for its operation on the production of a stratified bed. Heavier material gravitates downwards, and separation is achieved by splitting the ore horizontally, with the recovery of a dense stream and a lighter stream. The important ore-dressing unit operations that fall in this class are the jig, the Reichert cone and the pinched sluice. A new quantitative model based on Mayer's potential theory is developed here. This model is developed completely for the simple case of binary mono-size particulate materials, but the extension to units operating with feed material distributed over particle size and density is discussed in principle. The model can be used to predict the performance of these units and is very suitable for simulation. The model is tested successfully against experimental data obtained from a batch jig and a Reichert cone.

To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms.
