Dolomite is an essential raw material for the refractory industry, a flux in the iron and steel industry and also for the extraction of magnesium metal. Generally, particle size reduction, screening and classification are used for the preparation of the high-grade sized material for different applications, whereas low-grade fine fractions are not utilised. These fines or low-grade overburdens are dumped at the mine site for future utilisation, which creates environmental issues along with inadequate space management. In the present investigation, a detailed study was carried out to decrease the silica content of the low-grade dolomite fines from Gomardih , India, containing 28.6% CaO and 20.1% MgO along with 8.3% silica. Different process flow sheet options were evaluated with a combination of dry classifier, wet classifier, gravity concentrators as well as flotation. Different process variables were assessed along with mineralogical characterisation to optimise the process for efficient rejection of siliceous gangue minerals. Results indicated that dolomite, calcite and quartz are the major mineral phases present in the ore along with other minor minerals. It was concluded that two-stage flotation was an effective process for the reduction of silica up to below 1% after grinding to a particle size below 212 μm. A process flow sheet with a combination of gravitation air classifier and flotation can produce a concentrate with silica content below 4.5%. Leadbeater The present reviewer approached the above book as a relative novice on the intricate details of fracture mechanics. Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. In April 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. Since the high shell temperatures recorded in the tap-hole area resulted in the furnace being switched out for relining, the tap-hole area was excavated systematically. A refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area with affected hearth and sidewall refractory was obtained in elevation. The carbon ramming paste in front of, above, andbelow the tap-hole was worn, as was the SiC with which the tap-hole was built. A clay mushroom formed but was detached from the refractories. Thermodynamic and mass-transfer calculations were conducted to quantify the potential for wear by chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area. It was found that chemical reaction between refractory and slag or metal could offer only a partial explanation for the wear observed; erosion is expected to contribute significantly to wear.

The mining industry has yet to fully accept and embrace the strategic role of technology and innovation in successful business planning and execution. In this study, we empirically determine the factors that influence acceptance of technology solutions in the mining industry in South Africa, assess critical success factors influencing adoption of advanced technology in the South African mining industry, and explore challenges faced by the mining industry in South Africa in adopting advanced technology in its operations. Thematic content analysis is employed in the data analysis. Results show that critical success factors to the adoption of mining technology include learning culture, knowledge sharing, high labour costs, and behaviour of other firms in the industry; commonly identified challenges include inadequate engagement with external stakeholders, uncertainties, the cyclical nature of the sector, and high risk related to the adoption of unproven technology and performance systems focused on volumetric production. The study encourages mining companies to implement usage of technology. This can be properly done through regular engagement with the Minerals Council South Africa.
