Altindag Foreword Some thirty years ago it was almost customary that articles in South African technical and scientific journals were followed up by discussions in which the reader(s) expressed criticism and/or added to the information contained in the article. This custom has obviously died out, be it that the articles are nowadays of such a high standard that nothing can be added or be it that the receivers of the Journal suffer from an information inflation and do not read the articles anymore. I now have the temerity to offer a discussion to an article that recently appeared in the journal, namely ?The evaluation of rock brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills? by R. Altindag (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metall., vol, 102(2002), pp. 61?66.

The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. ABSTRACT: Although individually both continuum and discontinuum numerical analyses provide useful means to analyze rock slope stability problems, complex failures typically involve mechanisms related to both existing discontinuities (i.e. discontinuum) and deformation and brittle fracture of intact rock (i.e. continuum). One such example is the 1991 Randa rockslide in the southwestern Swiss Alps, where failure involved several complex mechanisms, which require the consideration of progressive failure and rock mass strength degradation. This paper presents results from a series of hybrid finite-/discrete-element models directed towards the explicit modelling of brittle fracturing in natural rock slopes, enabling the modelling of progressive failure, from initiation, through to the development of catastrophic failure, transport and deposition. RÉSUMÉ: Si les modélisations numériques de type continu ou discontinu fournissent des outils utiles pour l’analyse de problèmes de stabilité de pentes rocheuses, elles montrent de sérieuses limitations lorsque des mécanismes de rupture complexes impliquent des processus liés autant aux discontinuités préexistantes qu’au développement progressif de nouvelles fractures. Ceci se retrouve typiquement dans l’exemple de l’éboulement de 1991 à Randa dans les Alpes suisses du sud-ouest, où la rupture a impliqué plusieurs mécanismes complexes nécessitant la prise en considération de la fracturation progressive ainsi que de la dégradation de la résistance des masses rocheuses. Cet article présente des résultats provisoires d'une série de modèles hybrides orientés vers la modélisation explicite de la fracturation de pentes naturelles, permettant la modélisation de fractures progressive de leur initiation jusqu’à leur développement, leur rupture catastrophique, leur transport et leur déposition. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Obwohl numerische Kontinuum- und Diskontinuum-Berechnungen einzeln nützliche Ergebnisse zur Stabilitätsanalyse von Felshängen liefern, sind komplexe Felsrutschungen typischerweise mit Mechanismen verbunden, die sowohl durch bestehende Trennflächen (s.a. Diskontinuum-Ansatz) als auch durch die Deformation und das Versagen intakter Felsbereiche (s.a. Kontinuum-Ansatz) bedingt werden. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Sachverhalt ist der Bergsturz von Randa 1991 im südwestlichen Teil der Schweizer Alpen, bei dem die Rutschung mehrere komplexe Mechanismen umfasste, so dass “progressive failure” und Verminderung der Gebirgsfestigkeit in Betracht gezogen werden müssen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt vorläufige Ergebnisse einer Reihe von hybriden Modellrechnungen (Finite-/Diskrete-Elemente). Diese haben zum Ziel, explizit das bruchhafte Versagen natürlicher Felshänge zu modellieren, wobei das progressives Versagen im ganzen modelliert wird, von der Anfangsphase über die Entwicklung zum katastrophalen Versagen und den Transport und die Ablagerung der Rutschmassen.

Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt eine numerische Studie über Tunnel im geklüftetem Fels. Das Verhalten und die Druckverteilungen in den unterschiedlich geneigten und geklüfteten Felsenmassen wird mit Hilfe des Discontinuous Deformation Analysis Programms (DDA) simuliert, und mit Laborversuchen verglichen. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.

The method used to assess the reactivity of lime was evaluated to gauge it usefulness as a quality control tool. The effect of particle sizes, different lime and water masses for a fixed s:l ratio and the same for various s:l ratios on the reactivity values obtained, were investigated. An attempt to introduce the amount of grit produced during the slaking reaction as an additional measure of limeís quality and reactivity, proved to be unsuccessful. It was also found that the relative amount of lime slaked during the different tests was independent of the reactivity value of the lime. The investigation confirmed the usefulness of the accepted test procedure as are liable method to measure the reactivity of lime, despite various reservations expressed from a theoretical point of view.

Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

In this paper, the computer program ‘SHAFT’ developed for estimation of support requirements for circular mine shafts is introduced. Theory of support design is based on the analytical solutions of circular excavations under non-hydrostatic loading (Detourney and St. John1), and Lame’s thick-wall cylinder theory (Timoshenko6). For rock mass strength property determination Hoek-Brown failure criterion (Hoek et al.2) is used. Mainly two types of support, concrete and steel are taken into consideration as a support member. Program is written in Quick Basic language. Input parameters of the program are shaft radius, number of zones having the same properties along the shaft depth, and depth, unit weight, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, GSI, and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock of each zone, and compressive strength and safety factor of support member. Output of the program is the graphical representation of shaft with the required support member and thickness throughout the depth of the shaft.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the strong interaction between the hardening shotcrete lining and the surrounding ground in NATM tunneling is investigated by means of axisymmetric analyses, accounting for the three-dimensional nature of the excavation process. The effect of the hydration of shotcrete on strength, stiffness, chemical shrinkage as well as microcracking and creep are accounted for. For the description of the mechanical behavior of the ground, a multi-surface plasticity model is employed. The performed analyses of the excavation process provide insight into the influence of each phenomenon accounted for in the material model for shotcrete on the response of the ground-shotcrete compound structure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In diesem Beitrag soll die Interaktion zwischen dem erhärtenden Spritzbeton und dem Boden auf der Basis axisymmetrischer Berechnungen untersucht werden. Derartige Berechnungen ermöglichen die Berücksichtigung des drei-dimensionalen Charakters des Vortriebprozesses. Die Auswirkung der Hydratation auf die Entwicklung der Festigkeit, Steifigkeit und der chemischen Schwindverzerrungen, sowie das Reißen und das Kriechen des Spritzbetons wurde berücksichtigt. Das mechanische Verhalten des Bodens wurde mittels eines Mehrflächenplastizitätsmodells simuliert. Die durchgeführten Berechnungen des Vortriebprozesses geben Einblicke in die Auswirkungen der Spritzbetoneigenschaften auf das Tragverhalten des Boden-Spritzbeton-Komposits. RÉSUMÉ: La stricte interaction entre le soutènement en béton projeté durcissant et le terrain dans un tunnel creusé avec la NATM est étudiée par des analyses axisymétriques, compte tenu de la nature tridimensionnelle des processus de creusement. Les effets de l’hydratation du béton sur la résistance, la rigidité et la contraction chimique, ainsi que sur la micro-fissuration et le fluage, sont mis en compte. Pour la description du comportement mécanique du terrain on emploie un modèle de plasticité multi-surface. Les analyses conduites mettent en évidence l’influence de chaque phénomène considéré dans le modèle constitutif du béton projeté sur la réponse de la structure composite terrain-béton projeté.

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. Existing processes for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from UG-2 ores place stringent requirements with regard to chromite content upon feed material to the plant. An alternative hydrometallurgical process for which this is not an issue is proposed that involves reductive roasting of the ore followed by leaching with HCl/chlorine, ion exchange, and recovery of PGM from the ion exchange eluate by reduction. Problems associated with leaching of PGM are discussed and results of laboratory testwork for each of the process steps are given.

South Africa?s re-entry into the fast moving and competitive global economy calls for some careful strategic planning and a good deal of co-operation between suppliers and end-users. The issues that need addressing are generally well known and include: ?South Africa was ranked 45th out of 46 i.r.o. productivity ?SMMEs contribute 1% to exports compared to 40-60% for the ?tigers? ?High unemployment ?Limited skills of the majority of workers ?Slow growth rate of the economy ?The vast majority of suppliers are not world-class ?The vast majority of suppliers are not export or marketing orientated. In order to survive, all parties, i.e. government, labour and business, will have to play their part.

Recent studies by the authors into the behaviour of jointed rock masses using direct shear testing have confirmed that joint spacing has a significant effect on rock mass strength. The rock mass failure envelopes assessed from these tests have been compared to failure envelopes obtained using the Hoek-Brown GSI criterion. Good agreement between measured and estimated GSI strength envelopes where obtained when joint spacing was considered in the assessment of GSI. Les études récentes conduites par les auteurs sur le comportement des joints rocheux employant l'essai direct de cisaillement ont confirmé que l'espacement a un effet significatif sur la force de la masse rocheuse. Les enveloppes de ruptures obtenues pour ces essais ont été comparées à l'enveloppe de rupture obtenue en utilisant le critère GSI Hoek-Brown. Une bonne corrélation a été constatée entre les enveloppes obtenues expérimentalement et les enveloppes calculées par la méthode GSI quand l'espacement des joints a été pris en considération dans l'évaluation de GSI. Kuerzliche Untersuchungen der Autoren betreffs Reaktionen von gebrochenen Felsmassen zu direkter Scherkraft, bestaetigen, dass die Abstaende von Rissen einen deutlichen Einfluss auf den Widerstand der Felsmassen hat. Die Bruchbereiche der Felsmassen die von diesen Untersuchungen entwickelt wurden, wurden verglichen mit den Bruchbereichen, die man mit der Anwendund der Hoek-Brown GSI Formulierung erhaelt. Eine gute Uebereinstimmung zwischen gemessenen und errechneten GSI Festigkeitsbereichen wurde erzielt, wenn der Abstand der Risse in der Berechnung der GSI in Betracht gezogen wurde.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

In 2002 a coal dust explosions occurred in the Polish collieries “Jas-Mos” and “Rydultowy” in the Upper Silesia coal basin. In the “Jas-Mos” colliery the coal dust explosion was initiated in the face of gallery by explosives and causing ten death. The stone dust barrier extinguished the flame, stopped the explosion development and saved forty nine miners working in that area. In the “Rydultowy” colliery methane inflammation caused three deaths and seven serious burns and ignited the coal dust explosion. The coal dust explosion was stopped by stone dust barrier and did not cause any victims itself. This paper presents the investigation carried out by the Central Mining Institute Experimental Mine “Barbara” and shows that the stone dust barriers remain still a basic mean for suppression of coal dust explosion in mines. The investigation were aimed at determining the cause of explosion and circumstances that led to their propagation. The evaluation of the state of dust explosion hazard in the areas of accidents have been performed, and the range of flame estimated.

The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flow sheet development and the associated metallurgical test work to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.
