In support of its objective to conserve mineral resources by minimizing premature failure of materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted a cooperative study with the U.S. Department of Energy on the erosion and abrasion resistance of hard materials for valves in coal conversion systems. This report describes a newly developed erosion-testing apparatus and presents data on the erosion resistance of over 200 materials. Erosion resistance of most metals was comparatively low. In contrast, ceramics and cermets such as B4C, WC, SiC, Si3N4, and TiB2, when fabricated to minimize porosity, displayed greater than five times the erosion resistance of metals. Coatings such as boron diffused into Mo and WC, chemical-vapor-deposited TiCN, and electrodeposited TiB2 were highly erosion resistant if applied in thicknesses ranging from 60 to 75 µm. Erosion resistance of cemented carbides was inversely related to metal binder content.

A fatal explosion in a sealed area at the Sago Mine in 2006 prompted researchers and regulators in the United States to re-examine the requirements for explosion-resistant mine seals. Seals are used in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from active workings. Prior to the Sago disaster, mining regulations required seals to withstand a 140 kPa explosion pressure. Recent research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that pressures from explosions can far exceed this pressure. U.S. mining regulations now require much stronger seals. Current research focuses on understanding the science, engineering and management of sealed areas of coal mines. Scientific efforts seek understanding of how explosive methane-air mixtures accumulate using measurements and models of the sealed area atmosphere. Additional scientific efforts aim to understand the explosion pressures that can develop using a combination of numerical modeling and experiments. Engineering efforts aim to produce design guidelines for seals that can resist the new higher pressure design criteria. NIOSH researchers are also developing guidance for monitoring of sealed area atmospheres and inertization of potentially explosive gas mixtures within sealed areas. This paper seeks to encourage scientific discussion among international peers since preventing explosions within sealed areas is of interest to underground coal operators and regulators.

Sulfur compounds have long been recognized as damaging pollutants of the air. A number of investigations have been made to determine the amount of such compounds existing in the air of various cities; moreover, some study has been given to the conditions affecting the concentrations. This paper summarizes published investigation and includes a bibliography on the subject. The methods of obtaining data have differed to the type of sampling, analysis procedure, hour of sampling, number of locations, and number of determinations made. Sampling methods include both the continuous type, covering a day or a number of days, and what can considered the ?snap? type, covering very short periods. Continuous sampling has, given data representing the average concentration at the location chosen but no information regarding variations from hour to hour, are none that might be said to represent the average for a city. The snap-sampling method, while not giving a true average for any one location or area, has in some instances made available date regarding variations of concentration during different hours of the day and at various locations or zones within the area chosen. Although the sulfur compounds in the air nay include sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and organic compounds of sulfur, most investigators report on the basis of sulfur dioxide. This gas unites with moisture to form sulfurous acid.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,938,200 for the 1.03-million-ton-per-year (MJ.Vl tpy) mine to $31,435,500 for the 3.09 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,607,200 to $51,982,000 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $9.11 to $8.06 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.

The purpose of this paper is to indicate some of the benefits that have been derived in the Zeigler No. 3 mine by using roof bolts under extremely adverse roof conditions J with the thought that much better results could be obtained in other mines with more normal roof conditions by applying some of the practices that were developed in this mine. Some of the benefits that have been obtained in this mine, which will be shown in this paper, are: 1. Increased tonnage per man-shift at the face when roof bolts are used, as compared to the tonnage under similar conditions when conventional timbering methods were used. 2. Increased efficiency of roof bolting by giving the foremen a definite plan to follow. 3. Reduction in delays caused by failures of the trailing cables of loading, mining, and drilling machines. 4. Reduction in the number of accidents after roof bolting was adopted. Inasmuch as the success that followed roof bolting in this mine was obtained under one of the most treacherous roofs in the Middle West, it is reasonable to suppose that correspondingly better results could be obtained under more favorable roof conditions by using the same procedure.

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

Native asphalt was produced in 1978-79 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output in-creased 37% in 1978 to 1.7 million tons and decreased 5% in 1979 to 1.6 million tons while value increased 39% in 1978 to $19.3 million and 33% in 1979 to $25.6 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

"This paper is based on the results of work conducted of the bureau's experiment station at Berkeley, Calif., in connection with the investigation of properties and methods of utilizing Western magnesite. The experiments described herein were made under the supervision of the writer, by W. C. Riddell and E. H. Delius, of the station's staff.In calcining magnesite for the production of magnesium oxide to be used in the preparation of oxychloride cement, the calcium carbonate present in the original rock may remain unchanged or appear in the finished product, either as CaO, or in combination with SiO2, A12O3, etc. As there is reason to believe that free CaO may have an effect on the behavior of caustic magnesia in the cement reaction, it is desirable to have a method for the determination of the relatively small amounts of free CO in the presence of a large quantity of MgO.The extraction of the free CaO with water free from CO2 at once suggests itself as a possible method. The solubilities of Ca(OH2)2 and Mg(OH)2. are given by Seidell in his book an ""Solubility of Inorganic and Organic Compounds."" (2nd Edition, 1919) as follows:"

"SUMMARYThe Ione-Carbondale clays area is 2 miles northwesterly of Ione, Amador County, Calif. It was explored during the war by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data on the alumina content and to recover representative samples for beneficiation tests for alumina recovery.Seventy holes, aggregating 8,837 feet, were drilled, and about 10.3 acres of land was cleared of underbrush. Maps and cross sections were compiled showing location of holes, analyses, and other pertinent data.The clay beds vary in thickness from 13 to 196 feet, and are covered by a loose overburden, averaging about 11.9 feet in thickness. The ratio of overburden to clay is 1 : 8.2. Analysis of a composite sample showed the recoverable alumina (A12O3) and Fe2O3 content to be in the order of 23.6 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.Topography of the clay area is ideal for open-pit mining methods and plant site.INTRODUCTIONInvestigation of alumina-rich clays for the possible production of aluminum was made during the recent war period, when the shortage of bauxite was becoming critical.Results of field examinations by the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that one of the most promising areas for the development of alumina-rich clays is in the Ione-Carbondale district."

A separator for minerals of low magnetic susceptibility and fine particle size in a water suspension is described. A ring-shaped matrix of ferromagnetic fragments rotating so as to pass successively through magnetic-field and field-free regions provides for the separation. Application is illustrated in the separation of hematite and ilmenite from quartz.

"INTRODUCTION During its wartime program of exploration for minerals essential to the national economy, the Bureau of Mines was instructed to investigate sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel. As a part of this investigation, some work was done on the iron deposits on the Neutral and Aztec claims on Buckhorn Mountain Canogan County, Washington, which was designed chiefly to indicate the nature and behavior of the ore deposits below the surface exposures. Diamond drilling was started in June and completed in July 1945. Preliminary laboratory tests on iron, ore from Buckhorn Mountain were completed during the fall and winter of 1945. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Previous Work . The Bureau of Mines reported a survey of bond clays for graphite crucibles at the American Mining Congress which met at St. Louis in November , 1919 *** . The report contained information in regard to : (a) tests carried on to determine the effect of substituting Canadian and Alabama graphites for Ceylon graphite in varying proportions . The data indicated that Alabama graphite is superior to Canadian graphite and further , that Alabama can be substituted for Ceylon graphite to a large measure without lowering the quality of the ware . These tests were made on No. 70 size brass melting crucibles and were carried out under foundry practice . (b ) Tests were reported in which an attempt was made to modify the nature of Alabama graphite by heat treatment so as to resemble Ceylon graphite . Little advantage from the treatment was reported . With this general information as a basis , the experimental work proceeded along two lines : A study of bond clays for steel -melting crucibles and for brass -melting crucibles . Twenty- one sets of standard-size crucibles were made up of a body containing Ceylon graphite as standard , bonded with 21 bond clays . These tests were carried out under foundry practice as were the former tests . Three domestic clays proved to be superior to the standard Klingenberg clay formerly used in brass -melting practice while in the steel - melting industry , 13 domestic clays gave service superior to Klingenberg clay .

At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, developed the property of the Tungsten Metals Corp. by surface trenching and diamond drilling from November 1940 to June 1941 and from August 1943 to December 1943. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves of tungsten in the downward extension and lateral eastern extension of three major tungsten-bearing quartz veins. The property is 50 miles south of Ely, White Pine County, Nev., in the Minerva Mining District. Tungsten ore was discovered in the district in 1915, and mining started in 1916. The tungsten ore bodies occur as shoots in quartz veins that occur along faults in limestone. With the exception of a small-scale leasing operation in 1932, the property was idle from 1919 until 1936, when Tungsten Metals Corp. was organized to acquire the mines. Production ceased in May 1945, and the mines were idle until leased in 1947. Development by the Bureau of Mines during 1940 and 1941 consisted of surface trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling 37 holes for a total of 6,959 feet. Subsequent drilling of eight holes, totaling 3,067 feet, in 1943 disclosed additional reserves. This report sets forth in considerable detail the exploration work completed by the Bureau and briefly describes the mining and milling methods employed. Diamond-drill halo logs and sample analyses are shown graphically in the illustrations that accompany the report.

Laboratory tests were made to determine if aluminum fluoride of commercial grade could be synthesized by reacting alumina hydrate with dilute ( 25 to 75 grams per liter of fluorine ) aqueous fluoride solutions . • Products containing up to 90 percent aluminum fluoride ( A1F ) were synthesized by reaction of alumina trihydrate ( A120 3H2O) with either dilute hydrofluoric acid ( HF ) or ammonium fluoride ( NHF) solutions , the ammonium fluoride solution resulting from ammonia ( NH ) desilication of a hydrofluoricfluosilicic acid ( HF - H₂ SiF ) solution . Fluorine recoveries of over 80 percent were obtained with either type of solution . The hydrated precipitates of AlF, and ( NH4 ) , A1F ( ammonium aluminum fluoride ) obtained by reacting hydrated alumina with these solutions were subsequently converted to anhydrous AlF, by controlled heating .

This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . Two samples from the Alma and No. 2 Gas beds , the lowest stratigraphically of the seams tested in Boone County , contained from 1.4 to 2.7 percent sulfur . Most Boone County coals yield

Laboratory experiments were conducted on several materials to determine their suitability for the production of mineral wool. By blending raw charges in the proper proportions and in some instances by adding lime, acceptable wools were made from samples originating in Alaska, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. It was shown that satisfactory wools can be produced from many kinds of raw materials if the ratios of acidic and basic constituents are properly maintained. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has facilities at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., for examining and testing mineral-wool raw materials. Samples are evaluated through small-scale wool-blowing experiments, aided by petrographic, chemical, and physical analyses of the raw materials and finished wools. When enough experimental data have been accumulated they are made public through Government reports and periodicals. This report of investigations follows that published in 19513/ and presents test data on samples received and examined since 1951.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping experiments have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of sulfite oxidation em¬ploying 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-1-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. The results show that sulfite autoxidation, catalyzed by Mn(II), involves not only the SO-3 radicals but also the •OH radicals. An addition of H2 02 to the sulfite aqueous medium significantly increases the •OH radical formation. This result provides new clues to the chemical mechanism of the sulfite oxidation and the sulfite toxicity.INTRODUCTIONStudies of the oxidation of the sulfite (SO 2-/3) ions under various conditions are of high current interest because excessive exposure to sulfite is toxic and the origin of this toxicity seems to involve sulfite oxidative pathways [1]. An important fact is that human exposure to sulfite is on the increase [1,2]. Some of the increase in the sulfite exposure is linked to the fact that SO2 is a major air pollutant [2] and in aqueous media SO2 exists in equilibrium with SO2-/3. In addition, beverages and foods are common sources of sulfite intake. For example, sulfite is used extensively in the wine industry as an inhibitor of yeasts and bacteria and is present in finished wines in concentrations up to 6 mM [1]. Sulfite is also often added to dehydrated fruits, vegetables and soups, as well as fruit juices and beer [1,3,4]. Because of these, the mean daily intake of sulfite from diet (in the United States) has been estimated to be between 0.0014 and 0.14 mM/kg body weight [1]. At such high levels, sulfite exposure can have toxic effects, such as the induction of an acute asthmatic state [5,6]. Sulfite also appears to have adverse genetic effects [7] and can act as a mutagen or comutagen [8] and a cocarcinogen [5,7-9]."
