Domestic production of Metallurgical-grade manganese has contributed such a small percentage of the United States industrial demands that areas known to contain large tonnages of low-grade manganese ore have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines to reduce this country's dependence on foreign ores. A major source of low-grade manganese is the Cuyuna iron range in Minnesota. The entire Cuyuna iron range is covered by an overburden of glacial drift that, in some places, reaches depths of 200 feet or more. Prospecting and exploration must be guided by geophysical methods, drilling results, or projections of exposures found in operating mines because there are no outcrops near the productive parts of the range. Past drilling for the purpose of outlining iron ore generally was confined to the highly oxidized zones. Much of the manganese with which the Bureau of Mines is concerned occurs in thin-bedded unoxidized iron formations, too low in iron content to have been of interest to those seeking commercial iron ore. The primary objective of the core-drilling reported here was to obtain cores of different classes of manganiferous rocks and to determine whether or not the samples were amenable to beneficiation.

From 1986 to 1989, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 59,600-acre Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-054) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Emery County, UT, about 24 miles east of Castle Dale, UT. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified two uranium prospects in the Wilderness Study Area, and three copper prospects nearby. One-hundred ninety-five rock samples were taken.

The tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Piute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computerized oil and gas well data retrieval system from studies of the waterflood potential of a producing reservoir. This system stores pertinent information about each well completed in a reservoir and facilitates selection and manipulation of large volumes of data. Use of the system enables reservoir information to be supplied rapidly, accurately, and at less expense.

China?s New Steel Complex Postponed. - The planned $5 billion Baoshan Steel Works near Shanghai is being laid aside for 6 months to a year, and may be abandoned altogether. The second phase of construction, in which Wean United, Inc., of Pittsburgh was a major participant, has definitely been cancelled. Over $1 billion had been committed to the 6 million-ton-per-year plant. U.S. Firm Develops South African Fluorspar. - The Armco Bronne Co. of Middletown, Ohio, plans to spend $27 million to develop a fluorspar mine in the Republic of South Africa, With fluorspar reserves at 20 million metric tons, the project is planned to produce 200,000 tons Per year of fluorspar for export starting in 1983. U.S.S.R. Resumes Sales of Titanium Sponge. - Against a background of increased U.S. titanium sponge supplies, the Soviet Union is offering limited quantities of this commodity to the U.S. market at approximately $10.00 per pound, down from $25.00 per pound last year.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group&apos;s ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. This Bureau of Mines report proposes a new methodology for estimating industrial dust explosion hazards in terms of three probabilities or co-factors: The dispersion of the dust, the existence of a flammable dust concentration, and the presence of an effective source of ignition. This method or rationale is proposed as a replacement for the "explosibility index" that was first suggested 25 yr ago, but which, by consen-sus among leading researchers in the field, is now outdated. This report presents a detailed critique of the deficiencies of that old, material-oriented index, and develops the logical rationale for its re-placement by an approach that is better suited for quantitative hazard evaluations. A variety of such evaluations are illustrated, which show how a quantitative prediction of explosion frequencies can be obtained from laboratory measurements and operating conditions in a given indus-trial facility. The method has some pitfalls, particularly as they re-late to the correlation of events or their randomness. These are discussed, as well as the method&apos;s other limitations and uncertainties. This work is intended to provide a beginning to a quantitative approach to explosion hazard assessment. To that end, a new method is proposed for estimating thermal ignition probabilities in terms of the measured laboratory autoignition temperature of a dust, its relationship to the operating temperature, and its distribution within a given industrial system.

A vertical air shaft in the Birmingham, Ala., iron district was sunk with a circular cross section and lined with concrete at a relatively low cost to provide needed ventilation for an iron-ore mine. The method of sinking the shaft is described, and the costs are stated in mar-hours with a descriptive list of equipment and a statement on the size and use of temporary buildings. Preparation began May 2, 1955, and the shaft was completed at a depth of [680] feet by September 22, 1956. By October 1956, all temporary building and [aft]-sinking equipment had been removed. The total direct-labor cost for the operation, including preparation and dismantling, was 50,700 man-hours, or 30.2 man-hours per foot. Total rock and dirt removed amounted to 17,523 cubic yards (in place), and the shaft lining required 4,635 cubic yards of concrete to form a circular air shaft with an inside diameter of 16 feet.

Following World War II, the rapid increase in both military and civilian activity in the area served by the Alaska Railroad stimulated interest in the availability of local sources of nonmetallic minerals that might be used for building materials. Except for abundant sand and gravel and some pumice, the construction industry of the area depended entirely on high-cost imports for building materials of mineral origin. Because continued rapid growth was anticipated, development and use of local sources of such materials was advocated by both military and civil authorities to reduce the high costs of con¬struction and bolster the unstable economy of the area. The U.S. Department of the Interior began a program On included examining the numerous deposits of nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad to determine their possible use as raw materials for the construction industry. Preliminary field investigations were made by the Geological Survey. The more promising deposits were subsequently examined and sampled by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the samples were subjected to the laboratory tests necessary to indicate the chemical and physical characteristics of the raw materials or their products. Such field and laboratory investigations were conducted on clay, shale, argillite, limestone, gypsum, and pumice taken from various parts of the area. In initial phasees of the work, done irate 1948 through 1952, many of the deposits examined were suitable for proctoring building materials. Results of the work completed during that period have been published in a Bureau of Mines report3 giving general information and detailed data on more than 35 deposits that were investigated.

As a part of it investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explocibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmospheres may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that report enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust ran, uses present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.

To enable the mining industry to be kept informed as to the availability of equipment developed by mining equipment manufacturers in their constant endeavor to keep a step ahead of changes in mining techniques, the Bureau of Mines periodically issues lists of equipment approved subsequent to the last previous listing. The present list covers those approvals issued during calendar years 1953 and 1954. It supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953. The procedure established in Bulletin 543 of numbering items in each category consecutively to indicate the chronological order of the approvals has been continued in this circular. Information on approvals issued later than January 1, 1955 may be obtained by referring to Coal Age, a monthly magazine issued by the McGraw-Hill Publishing Co.

A complete list of permissible mine equipment , tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1 , 1947 , was published as Information Circular 7432.27 A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 was published as Information Circular 7465.3/ The present list supplements Information Circular 7432 and includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar years 1947 , 1948 , and 1949. It therefore supersedes Information Circular 7465. The list also includes an appendix ( No. 2 ) giving the symbol that must be used by every cable manufacturer in marking trailing cables that have passed the test for flame resistance as stated in the amendment of October 21 , 1947 , to Schedule 2E . The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification . Thus , Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list ; five additional compressors , Nos . 7 to 11 , inclusive , in this category were approved during 1947 , 1948 , and 1949 . Several items that were listed in Information Circular 7432 have been repeated in this circular where it was necessary to show that approvals of such equipment were extended to cover an additional voltage rating or other changes . Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found , upon inspection and test , to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal -mining industry . The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy , as well as in those that may become so , is earnestly recommended in the interest of safety . This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines , devices , and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incident to coal mining . This circular and Information Circular 7432 give the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications .

The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

The Federal Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process has been modi¬fied to produce a concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow that could be dewatered more effectively by filtration or centrifugation. This change was accomplished by redesigning the Bureau&apos;s two-stage flotation pilot plant facility and running the second-stage flotation step with undiluted or only partially diluted first stage coal froth concentrate. Results of the pilot plant flotation tests showed that substantial sulfur reduction could be achieved by flotation with undiluted pulp but some dilution is recommended for maximum selectivity. For example, coal-pyrite flotation in slurry of 25 percent solids yielded clean coal products analyzing as low as 0.7 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject products containing slightly over 3.0 percent pyritic sulfur. In comparison, coal-pyrite flotation with pulp diluted to about 12.5 percent solids yielded clean coal containing as low as 0.4 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject of 5.6 to 6.7 percent pyritic sulfur. Despite the need for some dilution, it was concluded that excellent coal-¬pyrite flotation selectivity could be achieved without diluting to 6 or 7 per¬cent solids as done in the earlier work. Thus the economics of coal-pyrite flotation would be improved by easing clean coal dewatering problems and by reducing second-stage flotation cell volume requirements.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,540,700 for the 1.06-million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $44,720,500 for the 4.99 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,850,700 to $75,693,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $8.76 to $7.53 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

This is the eighth in a series of reports en properties of commercial meter fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C. F. R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data en meter gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report, covering 1,679 samples, represents the products of 118 companies plus these from the Pacific coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. The throe groups of data en samples of regular, premium, and third-grade gasolines arc averaged separately. The number of samples and brands representing each grade are as follows: Regular price, 869 samples, 76 brands; premium price, 452 samples, 45 brands; third-grade, 358 samples, 82 brands. In this report the same marketing districts are retained as were used in the preceding report, and as far as possible the actual sampling points in each area arc indicated on table 1.

"Purpose and Origin of Investigation.For many investigations of mineral products such as metallic and ceramic materials, especially refractories, a knowledge of thermal conductivity and specific heat at high temperature is required. Such data have been needed by the Bureau of Mines for checking heat balances in kilns, and computing heat loss through furnace walls.Design of apparatus for thermal conductivity tests was undertaken by the Bureau early in 1922, an industry at that time indicated that no equipment intended for extreme high-temperature observations was elsewhere available or likely to be in the immediate future.The Bureau's investigation was begun by C. R. Greenslade, assisted by F. A. Hartgen, and temporarily discontinued owing to their resignations in the summer of 1922. The work was later turned over to the writers of this report, and has been carried forward at intervals, along with other problems."
