"INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."

Currently many underground coal mines worldwide have installed or been planning to install a tracking system to trace miners mainly for their safety. Although many systems have been reported functional, a lack of sophisticated and systematic error correction methods apparently is still an issue for them; often it results in a low system resolution. To improve the system resolutions, this paper introduces two position adjustment methods for mine tracking systems. The first is an entry-matching method that optimally adjusts an off-course tracking device to the closest tunnel (entry). The second is a distance measurement adjustment method that accurately adjusts the position of a tracking device along an entry according to a measured distance from the device to a reference point. The coplanar node-path network mine model is used as the foundation for the development of these two methods.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe diamond drilling was conducted under the general supervision of McHenry Mosier, chief, Mining Development Branch, Minerals Technology Division, Region VIII, and the direct supervision of Kenneth M. Earl and the writer as project engineers. Drill cores were logged by Paul K. Sims of the Federal Geological Survey. This report documents the work performed and the results obtained in a 2-year development of a Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Bureau of Mines Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. The performance requirements of an inert gas generating system for the Remote Sealing System were clearly established. A thorough review of seven possible system designs meeting these requirements was conducted. An air cooled, distillate oil fired combustion type inert gas generator was selected for further detailed design, hardware fabrication, and performance testing. The Inert Gas Generator constructed under this program has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hours. The system has met or exceeded all important performance requirements. The system was used in the fire fighting efforts at the Bethlehem Mines Corporation Cambria Division Mine 33 fire and contributed to the successful containment of the fire. The system was also employed in the demonstration of entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the fall of 1978. The system is currently avail-able for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests on samples of pozzolaniccement concrete to develop a low- strength backfill . Results show that support costs can be lowered by replacing a portion of the portland cement in mine backfill with pozzolan ( fly ash ) and lime . Unconfined compression tests on various ratios of fly ash to cement in 84 samples produced compressivestrength curves that can be used to estimate the best backfill mix for any mine .

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and in coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing and evaluating administrative controls and a list of possible administrative controls are reported.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the principles of support-rock interaction, based on structural matrix methods which permit mathematical formulation of the problem and computer solution. The principles are given under two main sections: the first discusses the idealization of the tunnel support structural system for matrix analysis; the latter discusses the analysis procedures necessary for carrying out the solution. A general frame matrix computer program and a medium-size computer should be sufficient for carrying out the procedures involved. The example problem consists of a circular tunnel support which is subjected to a uniformly distributed vertical load, Three wall thickness-radius ratios are studied in combination with four support-rock modulus ratios. This problem illustrates the main procedures of the support-rock interaction analysis involved, and examination of the results reveals the influence of the relative rigidities of the support and the rock.

The Bureau of mines investigated thermodynamic properties of MnSO4 and 2CdO CdSO4 to obtain basic thermodynamic data applicable to the treatment of mineral concentrates during roasting and sintering processes. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. The Bureau of Mines oil-shale program, initiated in April 1944, is concerned with the future utilization of oil shale in the United States as a source of liquid fuel. One phase of this program is the accumulation of information on the location, extent, and richness of oil-shale deposits that may be suitable for processing to oil and related products. A previous publication5/ presented, by means of logs, the oil yields of sections of the largest known oil-shale deposit in this country -the shales of the Green River formation occurring in adjoining portions of the states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. This present supplementary report presents the oil yields of cores from 48 holes drilled during 1952 to 1954 in the Green River formation of Colorado, which is distributed over an area of more than 1,000 square miles. The oil yields of the 48 oil-shale sections, involving the assay of 9,651 samples, representing 22,451 feet of core, are presented by means of logs. In addition, the oil yields of samples comprising the maximum sections of 15 gallon-per-ton shale are tabulated for these cores and for the 28 cores from Colorado which were logged in the previous report.

"INTRODUCTION Burning refuse dumps are a common and by no means pleasant sight in most coal-mining distracts; they have been and largely continue to be accepted as a necessary, if undesirable, adjunct to coal-mining operations. The odor, smoke, and fumes emanating from the burning dumps have caused much property damage, as well as aroused unfavorable public sentiment in the areas thus affected; and there is reason to believe that, in at least some cases, they have had an adverse effect on the health of certain communities, adjacent to mines. In some instances such communities have been owned or controlled by the mining companies and in others they are incorporated towns.After the start of World War II, it was necessary for Great Britain to take prompt and effective measures to extinguish or at least blanket the burning refuse dumps at collieries, since the fires served as beacons for the enemy planes; the problem thus became a matter of national security rather than one of local inconvenience. If the United States should become involved in a bombing war, these dumps might became a source of national danger, hence now is a propitious time to at least make a start on available methods of solving this problem. Much progress was made in Great Britain in extinguishing the dump fires that had burned for years and in preventing newly made dumps from taking fire.Burning refuse dumps have not been a national problem in the United States, but they are a nuisance and frequently a danger and often a fruitful cause of poor public relations on account of the odor and fumes. Many progressive coal-mining companies are taking effective and positive action in trying to extinguish old dump fires and to build new dumps so they are less likely to fire.The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the problem as well as on ways to extinguish refuse dump fires, to describe methods of constructing dumps that probably will prevent them from firing, and to point out some of the danger that exists when dumps are improperly built and when they are on fire."

Mire No. 4 is located in the Swanzy district, in the southern end of the Marquette range, about 3 miles from Gwinn, Mich. The Swanzy district is an isolated ore-bearing formation, and Mine No. 4 is at the extreme southeastern end.

The flotation work on samples from nine fluorspar properties in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky., reported herewith was part of a wartime project that resulted in increasing the supply of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The samples were tailings, dumps, and waste rock that had been rejected in previous milling operations. All were treated successfully by flotation to yield metallurgical-grade concentrates with recoveries ranging from 77.5 to 98.3 percent of the fluorite. After the laboratory testing, the results of which were available to the owners and operators of the properties, many of the tailing ponds and rock dumps were milled. The real value of this report, therefore, is to show the operators of gravity concentration plants the possibilities of re-treating waste products by flotation either at some future time or currently with the gravity

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

A laboratory method for processing lead battery scrap has been developed that eliminates virtually all of the S02 emission that normally is produced when a reverberatory or blast furnace is used. The method employs a hydrometallurgical step to convert the PbS04 to PbO and CaS04 by mixing the battery scrap with a slurry of Ca(OH)2. The reaction is exothermic and goes to completion in 2 to 5 minutes at room temperature. The dried product is mixed with a KC1-NaC1 flux and carbon and reduced at 6500 C. A minimum charge ratio of 3 parts of carbon to 100 parts of battery scrap is required for reduction. The process produces lead reductions and recoveries as high as 97.0 and 94.9 percent, respectively. The KCI-NaCl flux is recovered using a standard counter-current water leach followed by evaporation.

"INTRODUCTION The reduction of washery losses of marketable coal is a phase of coal preparation important to many of the Alabama coal producers. The problem has wide scope, and this report deals with but one of its several aspects. The investigation on which this report is based was made by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines with the cooperation of the Alabama By-products Corporation and the University of Alabama. The Alabama Byproducts Corporation provided samples of table middlings from its Colta washery on the Mary Lee bed at Flat Creek, Ala.PRACTICE AT THE COLTA WASHYAt Colta run-of-mine coal is crushed in a hammer mill in closed circuit with 5/16-inch square-mesh vibrating screens and tabled without classification on eight rectangular-deck wet tables. The coal is more friable than the bone normally present, and hence the bone is concentrated in the coarser sizes. An unclassified feed of this character can not be tabled with high efficiency to low ash content because of the sizing action of a concentrating table, which is such that when the tables are adjusted to exclude the coarse bone from the washed coal, a large amount of fine coal is lost in the middlings. At the time this investigation was undertaken there was no market outlet for middlings, with the result that middling products had to be discarded with the refuse."

In this report estimates are presented of the impact of the passage of five recently proposed "acid rain" bills on electric utility costs for coal-burning utilities servicing the domestic aluminum smelting industry, and on the costs of production for affected aluminum smelters. As aluminum smelting is an energy-intensive industry, domestic increases in electricity prices could affect the industry's competitiveness. Energy costs in U.S. aluminum smelting are compared to aluminum smelting energy costs in the rest-of-the-world. Governmental policies affecting these energy costs are discussed.
