"Petroleum engineering is a comparatively new branch of engineering, with which few people, even petroleum operators and mining engineers, are thoroughly familiar. Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."

"INTRODUCTION These inspection standards have been prepared for use as a guide for the Federal inspection of anthracite mines. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7231 in January 1943 and used as a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes in the original standards have been made, due in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part to need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions and practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared.Throughout these standards reference is made to determining the methane content of the mine air by using a permissible flame safety lamp. The Bureau has approved various electrical devices for the detection of methane, but it is recognized that new devices for determining the percentage of combustible gases as well as the percentage of oxygen, might be perfected for general use in mines, and therefore it may be necessary to revise certain standards to include the use of such equipment if and when the device is accepted as being permissible.About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however, failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also lead to loss of life.With continuing change in mining methods, some of these standards may become inapplicable, and further revision will be advisable. Therefore, question regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau, so that changes may be made from time to time. Numerous changes proposed by mine operators and by State mining departments have been incorporated in these standards."

[Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. Tantalum is a rare element ; estimates indicate that there is less tantalum than gold in the earth's crust . After remaining a laboratory curiosity for many years , it was used to a limited extent and for relatively few years (1903- 1911) for incandescent electric-light -bulb filaments . Another wave of interest in tantalum appeared when its electrolytic-valve action was taken advantage of in charging storage batteries , especially for radio work . Tantalum chargers were eventually displaced by other types of chargers , but for a time they were manufac tured in sufficiently large numbers to create a demand for the metal and to bring about its production on a commercial scale in the United States . As tantalum became available in larger quantities and at substantially lower prices , and as high prices for platinum encouraged the employment of tantalum as a substitute , the metal was put to many new uses . Ferrotantalum was made and sold before the World War , and patents have been taken out for a number of special alloys for industrial purposes , but probably the largest use for the metal to-day is in vacuum tubes .

It has long been recognized that one of the principal ways of combating dust in coal mines is by means of water sprays. However, spray systems, currently in use, clog or plug frequently, thereby reducing the effectiveness of dust control aid, in turn, possibly increasing the health hazard to mining personnel. Moreover, the maintenance and replacement of spray system components, e.g., nozzles and filters, can be expensive in terms of direct costs of labor and material, and the consequent loss of production. Recognizing these problems, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a research project on the "Development of a Non-Clogging Water Spray System"; this project was carried out by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. The overall objective of this project was to develop a non-clogging water spray system suitable for use in underground coal mines. Since most of the dust formed is at or near the working coal face, emphasis was placed on face equipment such as a continuous mining machine. To accomplish this objective, a two-phase project was carried out. The first phase involved determining the causes of spray nozzle and spray system clogging, determining the availability of spray nozzles or systems that could be modified to be non-clogging, and developing a non-clogging water spray system. Phase two was concerned with the fabrication and the laboratory and field testing of a non-clogging system. In each phase, there were both laboratory and field investigations, and the results of these investigations are presented in this report.

"INTRODUCTION This is the third report of investigations by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with industry to establish the value of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of ferrous and nonferrous alloys. The manganese was produced by the Bureau at its Boulder City pilot plant from domestic ores and by the process developed by it. 4/ The work was done under the direction of R.S. Dean, assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, metallurgical branch. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steels 5/ and the second with its use in acid electric or open-hearth low- and medium-carbon steel castings. 6/The present report treats of the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of low—carbon rimmed and killed steels. A résumé of these three investigations and two others appeared in the magazine STEEL. 7/ Further reports will be published as tests are completed at some 70 industrial plants. All tests were made on full—scale heats or melts, and the resultant product was processed and used commercially."

A method is being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for recovering lead metal from galena without the generation of SO2. Lead chloride is obtained by leaching lead concentrate at a temperature of approximately 100° C with FeCl3 solution: PbS + 2FeCl. " PbC1 2 + 2FeC1 2 + S. Electrolysis of the PbCI 2 product in a fused-salt bath results in deposition of molten lead metal at the cathode and evolution of chlorine at the anode. The chlorine can then be absorbed in the spent leach solution to regenerate FeCl3 for recycling. Optimum electrolyte composition was a PbC12-LiCl eutectic containing 7.6 wt-pct LiCl. The PbCl2-NaCl eutectic also proved satisfactory. Electrolysis in the PbCl2-LiCl bath at 450° C yielded 99 pct current efficiency at a current density of 5 amp/in2 with an energy requirement of only 0.24 kW-hr/lb metal produced. This compares with 98 pct current effi¬ciency and 0.26 kW-hr/lb metal produced for the PbCI2-NaCI bath. A typical lead deposit contained less than 100 ppm total detectable metallic impurities. At the low temperature employed for electrolysis, there was essentially no vaporization of Pb or FbC12.

1. The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists nine beds that arc being mined in Logan County, of which the Cedar Grove and Chilton are the most important. The Cedar Grove group, No. 2 Gas, and Alma beds have the largest remaining reserves, in the order given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 5,411 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,939 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimate reserves.

Procedures of mining high-calcium limestone underground at the Kimballton mine of the Standard Lime and Cement Co. in Giles County, west-central Virginia, are described. Drilling and blasting procedures area discussed in detail, and direct mining costs are tabulated in percentage of total cost. Output, about 1,725 tons of limestone a day, is attained with heavy trackless equipment by the room and pillar method of mining modified by benching floors. Operating features include underground air compression, electric-eye control of curtained doorways, use of a single jumbo drill rig for all drilling, and an effective plan for maintenance of equipment. The company's safety program has contributed to an outstanding safe mining record. The mine is integrated with a plant on the property which converts the stone to metallurgical and chemical grade lime.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., conducted a rock mechanics study at four widely spaced horizons in a deep mine shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to measure and analyze rock deformation and lining behavior during construction of a deep shaft in a high in situ stress field within an isotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were monitored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. This report discusses the general trends and magnitudes of data from the four test sites, and relates the data to a proposed anisotropic constitutive model for the rock mass. A design procedure is then outlined for specifications of liner thickness and support installation sequences for future shaft sinking.

COMBINED tonnage or natural abrasive materials sold or used in the United States in 1962 was 10 percent greater than that of 1961 and value was 9 percent higher. Production of crude artificial abrasives in the United States and Canada was up 14 percent in volume and 9 percent in value. Value of grinding-wheel sales increased 13 percent, and the value of coated-abrasives sales was up 10 percent. The value of imports and reexports declined, while the value or exports increased. [ ]

The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the methods of constructing and operating representative types of plants in the United States used for removing the light hydrocarbons from petroleum by continuous distillation, such plants being commonly known in the trade as topping or skimming plants. In the discussion of each plant an endeavor has been made to arrange the text similarly in order to facilitate comparison and to emphasize the important features. The various experimental values for the specific and the latent heats of the oils apply approximately to the oil treated. Careful experiments with each oil and its commercial fractions were not justifiable in view of the purpose of this report. It is regretted that limitations for recording data at the different plants made impossible the determination of a heat balance for each, which would have provided an equitable method of comparing efficiencies. The plants described are all in California where the topping industry has had its growth accentuated by the character and the use of the oil handled. The scarcity of suitable coal made the adoption of other fuel necessary, and the heavy oil of California supplied the need. To raise the flash point and to dehydrate this oil, various plants have been developed. However, the topping industry is represented in other fields; the Roxana Petroleum Co. of Cushing, Okla., and the Warner-Quinlan Asphalt Co. of New Jersey, are operating Trumble plants, and Texas and Oklahoma operators have been experimenting with different pipe retorts for continuous running. In addition to the reasons for topping cited above, in California topping has other purposes which give the plants practically a universal field in the oil industry. These additional purposes are (1) to remove the lighter constituents of the oil prior to storage for a long period, thus reducing the losses from evaporation, (2) to dehydrate and clean the oil, and (3) in conjunction with a complete refinery, to remove the lighter fractions cheaply and quickly, leaving a residue to be rerun for lubricants, coke, and other products. The reader in studying a plant for possible adaption to his own use should note that local considerations enter into the design and size of a plant. Several questions present themselves, as follows: 1. What type is suitable for the oil? 2. How much money is available for construction? 3. Will the volume of residuum be large enough for heat exchange with the crude? 4. Can the heat content of the vapors be used to reduce the cooling-water requirements? 5. What method will best recover the heat from stack gases? 6. Are the various pieces of apparatus adequate in size and best adapted to their purpose? 7. Is every possible provision made for the recovery of waste heat? 8. What products will be made, and what volume of each? 9. Is there provision for the recovery of light vapors? 10. Will the saving of fuel justify the capital and maintenance charges on the regenerative apparatus contemplated? It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished. The reader will find fuel economy and heat recovery emphasized throughout the descriptions. The conservation of the available petroleum supply is of the utmost importance, and the Bureau of Mines presents this paper to encourage the hearty cooperation of operators to that end. The Baume gravity scale used throughout the report is that of Tagliabue with a modulus of 141.5 for conversion to specific gravity.

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1940, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circu- lar 71103. Information Circular 71584, published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved during the calendar year 1940. The present list contains the information given in those two circulars, as well as approvals issued during the calendar year 1941. It embraces electrically operated air compressors, coal drills, conveyors and loading machines, electrical equipment for mine fans, mining machines and trucks, mine pumps, rock- dust distributors, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives, storage-battery power trucks and shuttle cars, mine telephones, junction and distribution boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, flashlights, methane detectors, and single- and multiple-shot blasting units. The equipment listed is not approved by the Bureau of Mines until found by inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in "schedules" prepared upon the basis of many years of ex- perience in dealing with safety problems confronting the coal-mining in- dustry. The use of such equipment in mines that are known to be gassy,. as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining.

This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes sam¬ples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is made to R. D. Refuge chambers may potentially save the lives of miners during a mine emergency. For this reason, it is crucial that miners know how to operate them. Unfortunately, because refuge chambers provide so many services, they can be very complicated and difficult to operate. Therefore, NIOSH has created this document with suggestions for developing manuals and educational materials. A multidisciplinary team comprised of NIOSH engineers, sociologists, psychologists, health communication professionals, and geologists developed the recommendations contained in this document. These recommendations are based on an evaluation of manufacturers? instruction manuals from both the U.S. and globally, interviews with over 20 mining and safety experts, and an extensive literature review. This research, focused on the best practices for refuge chambers, led to the formulation of this document. It is intended to offer suggestions to manufacturers and mine operators on how to create effective and easy-to-understand training manuals for miners as well as tips to create the most comfortable and usable refuge chambers. It should be noted that these recommendations are not meant to substitute for manufacturer-supplied materials but rather to be used in conjunction with manufacturer?s materials. Manufacturers should always be consulted for up-to-date information about their chamber. Although different states and different mines refer to underground refuges by different names, this guide will simply refer to underground refuges nearest to the face as refuge chambers, whether inflatable from a skid or constructed from steel. Other popular terms for refuge chambers are rescue chambers, rescue shelters, and refuge shelters. Refuges that are nearer to the shaft, whether a prefabricated refuge chamber or one built into a crosscut, will be referred to as outby refuges because of their location in the mine. Outby refuges can be permanent, semipermanent, or portable and are usually located at every other SCSR cache. Outby refuges are sometimes called hardened rooms, outby shelters, and in-place shelters. When discussing outby refuges and refuge chambers collectively, this guide will refer to them as underground refuges. Other terms for underground refuges include refuge alternatives, locations of safety, and safe havens. This document is designed to be read either cover to cover or by specific section. It is recommended that on first read, this guide be read cover to cover. In subsequent readings, manufacturers and mine operators may find it easier to use the table of contents page to locate specific information on parts of the refuge chamber.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a FORTRAN computer program that can calculate stress states from overcoring measurements obtained from hollow inclusion cells, triaxial cells, strain gauges installed on the wall of a bored raise, doorstopper gauges, borehole deformation gauges, or a combination of any of these gauges. Such stress states are calculated with reference to global and principal coordinate systems. The background of the development of the program, its capabilities, and its special features, as well as the input required, are described in this report. Sample output is also shown in appendix C. Difficulties associated with numerical calculations of principal stresses and directions are pointed out. Threshold values for detecting these problems are reported; these values may be changed by the user as desired. Several test problems were set up to verify the computer program and were successfully solved.

"A new apparatus has been devised for quickly and precisely analyzing natural gas for its helium content. The following outstanding advantages make it far superior to any equipment now available for the purpose.3/4/5/6/1. It enables more rapid determinations to be made.2. It has far greater sensitivity than previous apparatus. 3. It is portable.Fifty or more samples may be analyzed in an 8-hour day with the new apparatus and procedure. A maximum of about 10 samples per day could be analyzed with previous apparatus. In the apparatus described, the volume of pure helium obtained from a sample is determined by measuring the pressures created by that pure helium when it is expanded into a constant calibrated volume. In older methods the pure helium separated from a sample is pumped into a burette and measured at atmospheric pressure. The new apparatus and Procedure used with it reduce the average time for an analysis from about 40 minutes to less than 10 minutes,Samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium may be analyzed as readily as samples containing 1 percent or more, This was not possible with former apparatus. Duplicate samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium have been analyzed, results checking to one ten-thousandth of a percent. Attempts to measure a corresponding volume of helium in a burette at atmospheric pressure become futile. The ability to determine very small quantities of helium has become of great importance recently in gas- and oil-field engineering studies such Os the utilization of helium as a tracer gas in following the movement of gases through underground structures.A complete apparatus was recently carried more than a thousand miles in a passenger automobile. It arrived without breakage, was .set up and ready to make an analysis in a few hours. .Former apparatus was not portable. The portability of the present apparatus permits taking the apparatus to the field for more efficient prosecution of field engineering problems. The only services required in the field are electricity, tap water, and a source of liquid air or liquid nitrogen.The principle involved is based upon the fact that large volumes of all the constituents usually found in natural gas, except helium, are adsorbed quantitatively on cocoanut charcoal that has been cooled to the temperatures of liquid air. A volume of sample is measured and transferred to a tube of cocoanut charcoal maintained at the temperature of liquid air. After adsorption of all the constituents other than helium, the charcoal tube is connected to a sensitive pressure-measuring device, and the Percentage helium originally in the sample is calculated from two pressure readings and the volume of the original sample."
