"Copper anode slime is a precious secondary source for the recovery of silver. However, current recovery process are constrained by either sever pollution or high cost. To cover the drawbacks of current process, this research employed a novel strategy by using the manganese dioxide as the oxidant in acid solution, which avoided the generation of sulfur dioxide while high silver extraction rate was achieved. The effects of manganese dioxide, sulfur acid concentration, stirring speed, temperature and leaching time on silver extraction rate were investigated. The silver recovery reached to 91.68% under the conditions of 1.2 g manganese, 2.0 mol/L H2SO4, 300 rpm, 80 °C and 6 h. INTRODUCTION Copper anode slime is generated from the electrolysis refining of copper and is extremely precious for its containing noble metal such as silver (Chatterjee, 1996; Amer, 2003; Yldrm et al., 2014; Syed, 2016; Wang et al., 2017). Therefore it is of great significance to extract silver from anode slime for the full utilization of resource. Pyrometallurgy is the most mature process for the extraction of silver because of its stability and adaptability (Hait et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2017). However, it also suffers the drawbacks of high operating cost, low extraction rate of silver and severe pollution of smoke dust (usually containing lead and arsenic) (Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). To cover the drawbacks of pyrometallurgy process, more and more attentions are giving to the semi-hydrometallurgy process which usually includes a pretreatment process of sulphatising roast or low temperature oxidizing roasting (Tishchenko, 1964). After pretreatment, the refractory silver bearing phases (silver selenide, silver sulfide and silver) are converted into readily leached forms which are often extracted by ammonia, sodium sulfite in alkaline solution (Valiuniene et al., 2010; Wojciech, and Kitka, 2017). Despite its relatively high extraction rate and low investment, it still has the disadvantages of releasing harmful gases since the sulfur dioxide are generally generated in the pretreatment process. In addition, the use of ammonia can easily lead to a leaking into the atmosphere once not carefully dealt with (Aylmore and Muir, 2001). As for silver recovery by sulfite leaching, the consumption of sodium sulfite is rather high which often results in a pipe blocked (Yang et al., 2006)."

A large scale a polymetallic mine in north China is a refractory ore containing many useful com-ponents: W, Mo, Cu and Fe. Mineralogical investigation shows that the deposit is a quite complex one due to fine disseminated size and unevenly distribution of valuable, intergroth of sulphide and tungsten minerals, concurrence of scheelite and calcium minerals. Based on ore characteristic, a flowsheet is used by the floatation processing of sulfide minerals superior to scheelite. Bulk sulphide flotation is used in sulphides. Mo and Cu are floated in sequence after sulphides regrinded. Tungsten mineral is floated using combined depressant that is an effective depressant to gangue, and can improve the grade of rough tungsten concentrate. Compound depressant has high effective in removal of collector in gangue and sulphide, and tungsten is activated also. High quality of tungsten concentrate is obtained at satisfactory recovery. The test production obtains Mo concentrate with grade of 48.16%, recovery of 81.43%; W concentrate with grade of 66.47%, recovery of 78.19%; Cu concentrate with grade of 23.14%, recovery of 56.6%; Fe concentrate with grade of 67.33%. The valuable metals are recovered comprehensively and well techno-economic index is obtained. The mine enterprise profit is increased greatly.

In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

Cone crushers are used in the mineral, mining, and aggregate industry for fragmentation of rock materials. Control systems for cone crusher settings are widely used to compensate for wear and to protect the machines. The eccentric speed in a cone crusher affects the number of compressions the material is exposed to and thus the particle size distribution of the product. Eccentric speed also affects crusher capacity. However, the speed of the crusher is mostly fixed, because speed changes must be made by shifting pulleys, a process which is quite time-consuming. By applying a frequency converter, which has decreased in cost during recent years, it has become possible to adjust the speed continuously. By also applying mass-flow sensors to the process, the crusher can be run optimally to yield the most sellable products in a given moment. Existing systems normally only protect the machine. The sensors can be mass-flow meters, e.g., conveyor-belt scales. To analyze data from the process and calculate the appropriate value for the speed, an algorithm has been developed. The developed algorithm was tested and evolved at a crushing plant for aggregates that produces around 350 kton a year. The algorithm was implemented in a computer that could communicate with the frequency controller, retrieve data from four mass-flow meters, and also interact with the opera-tor. The computer was reachable over the Internet for the researchers at Chalmers and the algorithm was tuned and improved on-line. The result is a crushing stage that consistently and maximally produces the most desirable product. The performance (yield of required products) increased by 4%. As a bonus, the lifetime of the mantles increased 27% on the evaluated crusher.

The Kiruna area is an important mining province in northern Sweden, which is dominated by Fe- and Cu-Au deposits. Economically most important for the region, are the apatite iron ores with an annual production of c. 43 M ton of crude Fe-ore and a total production of more than 2000 M ton of ore the last 100 years. The apatite iron ores in the Kiruna area are dominated by either Magnetite or Haematite and contain varying amounts of apatite giving them a content of Fe and P, which varies between 30-70 % and 0.05-5 %, respectively. A typical geochemical feature of the ores is the strong enrichment of REE that is caused by a high content of REE in apatite and the occurrence of Allanite and Monazite containing 22.4 and 69.8 wt% REO, respectively. At Kiirunavaara, the content of REE in apatite varies between 0.07 to 1.57 wt% REO with a dominance for the light rare earths. The variation in REE-content of apatite depending on textural and paragenetic aspects is not known but apatite grains may display a strong LREE-depletion due to hydrothermal alteration. Monazite occurs as rod-shaped or tabular inclusions in apatite and is suggested, to have formed in response to hydrothermal alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. Inclusions are mainly found in the central part of apatite grains occurring in veins and schliren, while they are rare in apatite occurring disseminated in the ore. Monazite also occurs as larger grains outside apatite and together with Allanite is found in texturally and paragenetically different settings within the ore. These occurrences of REE-minerals may largely be a product of LREE mobilized by alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. However, REE-minerals including Allanite and Monazite might also have formed directly from late magmatic fluids. "There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

Granite ores are composed of silicate minerals and a variety of valuable REE (rare earth elements)-bearing minerals, however the processing technique to recover these valuable minerals is not yet developed. In this study, the recovery of REE-bearing minerals by dry magnetic separation and wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS)-settling from surface sample and from drill core sample, respectively, of a granitic REE-Zr-Nb ore deposit was investigated. The two samples have different mineralogy however in both samples, light REE are commonly contained in REE carbonate minerals while Y and heavy REE are commonly contained in zirconium silicate minerals and pyrochlore. The liberation size of the REE-bearing minerals in the two samples ranges from 10-250 ?m. Previous flotation testwork conducted on the drill core sample reported high recoveries of La2O3 (88%) and Ce2O3 (88%) but low recoveries of Y2O3 (42%), ZrO2 (17%), and Nb2O5 (29%). The objective of this study was to obtain higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling. Both processes implemented the application of a low magnetic intensity to initially separate the ferromagnetic minerals then a high magnetic intensity to recover the REE-bearing minerals. The results showed higher recoveries of Y2O3, ZrO2, and Nb2O5 by dry magnetic separation and WHIMS-settling indicating the potential of magnetic separation and gravity separation in recovering the heavy REE-bearing minerals. WHIMS-settling is more recommendable than dry magnetic separation because of its applicability in treating a wider range of particle size. In the WHIMS-settling, the light REE, Y, and Zr minerals were recovered mainly by applying four stages at high magnetic intensity of 21,500 gauss while the weakly magnetic pyrochlore was recovered mainly by decantation of the nonmagnetic slurry after a short settling time of 0.25 to 0.50 h. Within a phosphorus producing submerged arc furnace it was found that the continuous fluctuation of the furnace between a flowrate-driven state (high throughput) and a thermodynamic-driven state (low throughput) caused both techniques to have similar overall, predictive abilities and resulted in a linear, ARX-type, adaptive prediction model as the model of choice. Secondly, this pre-diction model was developed, tested and then shown to have a reasonable, 8-hour-ahead predictive accuracy (R2, coefficient of determination) of 30% (±6%) on future Pslag values. This inherent relationship exists because, at the precise moment of a Pslag prediction, the furnace already contains the metallurgical memory (input variables to the linear model) needed to ensure that some predictive possibilities will always exists - all as a result of the long residence times in the furnace. Residence time, however, is not a directly adjustable variable but rather a fully dependent variable and a function of an array of interconnected and interactive variables. In fact, this applies to virtually all input variables, reemphasising the importance of innate metallurgical memory. Thirdly, predictive control possibilities were explored by simulating the set-points of two fully independent variables used by operators to control the process: the ratio of fixed carbon-to-P2O5 and the ratio of silica gravel-to-pellets. This linear, predictive control model showed only a slight improvement with an 8-hour-ahead predictive accuracy of 35% (±7%). This highlights how ineffective current adjustments are in optimally steering the process and how difficult even incremental improvements in feed-forward and predictive control can be. Finally, it is shown that fundamental design-, sampling- and process restrictions currently associated with the process will always limit the predictive and especially control accuracy or meaningfulness of any dynamic model. These restrictions include the size of the furnace resulting in long residence times, 8-hours sampling intervals, an extremely complex and interactive process and a 16% spatial analyses variation on the Pslag values ? the very value that the model is to predict. The point is made that, given the current status quo, even the perfect dynamic prediction model can not improve on an 8-hour-ahead prediction of 30% (±6%). This barrier can only be pierced with e.g. tidier and more frequent sampling regimes and other upfront capital investments, a decision that becomes a cost accounting exercise and that can only be taken by the management structure. An investment demanding ever-increasing attention is CFD software and it?s potential to shed more light on the complex interactions within the furnace.

Physical principles of two-phase flows with a polyfractional solid phase have not received a sufficient theoretical interpretation as yet. Two-phase flows in the separation mode with a counter-flow of particles are even more complicated. Only statistical methods give an insight into general regularities of such processes. These processes can be interpreted best by analogy with the statistical model of an ideal gas developed by L. Boltzmann, although here a number of difficulties arise. The notion of a statistical system for such flows is substantiated. A mathematical estimation of a statistical system is presented. New notions are introduced, namely, potential extraction of a system and lifting factor. A relationship having the physical meaning of entropy is derived for a two-phase flow in the separation modes. The connection of this new entropy with flow parameters, such as the number of particles, separation factor and chaotizing factor, is established. Properties of this entropy are analyzed, as well as the analogy and difference between this entropy and Boltzmann?s entropy. The notion is formulated and the definition of the chaotizing factor of a process is suggested. In the framework of a statistical approach to two-phase flows in the separation mode, the notion of flow mobility has been formulated. Principal regularities of mass transfer in zone/apparatus sys-tem are analyzed. Principal ideas of a cellular model of the process are formulated, and main relationships for its description are derived. Proceeding from the cellular model, a dependence describing the degree of fractional separation of a narrow size grade is found. The analysis of this dependence makes it possible to reveal the crucial role of the Froude criterion for gravitational separation processes. It is found empirically that this parameter is a basis for the affinization of separation curves (Barsky E, Barsky M, 2006; Barsky, 1980).

This paper presents the preliminary results of a research programme conducted to assess the feasibility of a flotation technique in the remediation of soils severely affected by heavy metal contamination. The use of flotation in soil remediation is a recent practice. The main difficulties are given by the variety and peculiarity of the heavy metal containing species, and also by the grain size. Most of the studies reported in the literature concern the use of conventional collectors, such as xanthates, after a preliminary chemical modification of the metal bearing species through sulphidization. On the basis of the minera-petrographic characterization and of speciation, some classes of reagents have been selected, capable of acting both on metal-bearing species and all metallic cations to be separated. The design of the synthetic molecules has been based on the coordinative properties of the metallic centres and functionalized in order to act as collectors for a wide range of metals independently on their surrounding atoms. In laboratory experiments a sample of stream sediment has been utilized, whose contamination is caused by the runoff from Sardinia mine waste dumps and overflow from the settling ponds. The material showed contamination mainly from Zn, Pb and Cu and to a lesser extent from Cr, Ni, Cd, and Sb associated in mixed particles of Fe and Mn. Flotation tests on a laboratory scale have been performed on grain sizes less than 355 µm in laboratory cell Minerais & Metaux. The effects of the structure of collectors (functional group, chain configuration) as well as of the principal flotation parameters (such as pH, concentration of reagent) on the grade and recovery of heavy metals in the concentrate and in the tailings (remediated soil) have been investigated. The results of the laboratory tests substantially confirm the theoretical premises, and the most effecive reagents found belong to the classes ATP, MBT, MBO, fat acids and phosphates.

In this paper, the application of the metallurgical residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts leaching process is studied in the area of wastewater treatment. The modification of the sulfuric acid leached residue and the adsorption behavior behaviour of heavy metal ions such as (Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II), As(III)) in the waste-water on the surface of the residue are investigated. The rate of adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions in the wastewater on the modified sulfuric acid leached residue is investigated. It is showed that when the initial pH value of wastewater containing heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and As(III) range from 1.4 to 1.9, with the use of the modified leached residue, As(III) ion can be selectively separated from wastewater, and the separation efficiency can reach 90%~100%. The adsorption efficiency is affected by pH, reaction time, amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH was natural pH value and the absorption equilibrium time was 2 hours. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions increases with the addition of adsorbent and de- creases with the increase of the initial concentrations of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The heavy metal ions polluted wastewater, of which concentration is about 22.5~793.6 mg/L, can meet the national disposal standard for industrial wastewaters in China very well, after 2 hours treated by 3.75~7.50 g/L modified adsorbent at room temperature. Standard methods were used to investaged investigate the absorption behaviour between abosorbentabsorbent and metal ions in the wastewater. It is concluded that the adsorption behaviour of Co(II), Mn(II) and As(III) ion fits Freundlich iso-therm, while the adsorption behaviour of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions fits Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption amount of the modified adsorbent is about 54.0~336.7mg metal/g?adsorbentabsorbent. It is suggested that the modified sulfuric acid leached residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts is environmentally attractive and meaningful as absorbent used in heavy metal ions polluted wastewater.

In this study, a montmorillonite organo-intercalation compound (MOIC) was synthesized by using a Na-modified bentonite (NaB) as a matrix and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide as an intercalating reagent under microwave irradiation. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), organic carbon content measurement, and adsorption density determination. The results show that, at 10% suspension concentration and 10 minutes irradiation in a 130-W microwave oven, the basal spacing d(001) of the synthesized MOIC increases to 2.209 nm from the original 1.218 nm of NaB. The MOIC has much higher adsorptive densities to nitrobenzene and aniline from aqueous solution than the NaB. The adsorption isotherm of nitrobenzene on the MOIC is linear, and the adsorption is mainly the result of nitrobenzene?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution due to MOIC?s hydrophobicity. The adsorption isotherm of aniline on MOIC follows the Freundlich equation and the increased adsorption is not only the result of aniline?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution but also that of the MOIC?s surface adsorptions.

"The effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases.Electrokinetic methods were used to elucidate the mechanism of surfactants adsorption and to correlate these findings with the optimum flotation conditions. The polymeric surfactants would reduce the negative values of zeta potential of quartz while the reverse is true for feldspar. After treatment of microcline with HCl, its electrokinetic behavior in the presence of Tritons X surfactants became similar to that of quartz.The obtained results would suggest that separation of quartz from feldspar using nonionic surfactants of octylphenoletoxylated alcohols having shorter oxyethylenic chain length at low pH could be achieved"

"Mineral comminution is often a costly process which also requires high level of energy. In the course of the studies carried out by the researchers of the Department of Civil-Environmental Engineering and Architecture at the University of Cagliari, aiming at the optimization of the reduction processes, it has been experimented, among of others, the effects of high-speed water jets on minerals grinding. As far as coal is concerned, some of the solutions initially adopted are presented in this paper, which essentially relied on the water jet power only, with secondary use of mechanical actions, to reach the most modern solutions that envisage the use of mechanical energy, normally used in traditional grinding machines, in synergy with hydraulic energy transferred by water jet.INTRODUCTION Mineral comminution can be rather expensive and demand a high-energy consumption, especially for fine sizes (Austin, 1979). Further interesting perspectives in this area may be offered by comminution means aided by high pressure water jets (Ciccu 2007), whose crushing potential is currently used for several operations such as cutting different materials, rock digging and industrial cleaning. The crushing action of water jets may induce a traction stress in materials where substances of a mineral nature, especially if characterised by permeable porosity, oppose a minor resistance (Griffith, 1920). The first solutions to this purpose essentially relied on the sole energy of water jets, with a secondary use of mechanical actions (Ciccu, 1993). Results were encouraging, despite the high values of specific energy for the low capacity of treatment. However, due to the difficulty in making the techniques mainly based on hydraulic energy practically applicable to solids comminution a solution was experimented, with some interesting results, consisting in the combination of mechanical energy, normally used in traditional grinding devices, with hydraulic energy transferred through water jets, in a synergic relationship (Ciccu, 1998; Tilocca, 2016)."

"The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."

"We studied the mechanism of structural and chemical transformations of columbite, tantalite, zircon and feldspar surface during the treatment by high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) using the methods of X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), analytical electron microscopy (SEM - EDX), Kelvin probe force microscopy and flotation experiments. According to XPS and SEM - EDX data, major changes in the atoms chemical state of investigated minerals surface are related with formation and modification of functional cover and changing in concentration (% at.) of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surface, leading to increase in the contrast of technological properties of the rare metals minerals. Research has identified the optimal parameters of HPEMP - treatment of rare - earth minerals Npuls ??104, Ttreatment ??100 sec. improving the selectivity of the flotation separation of columbite and zircon. The difference in mineral recovery into the froth (? e) before and after HPEMP - treatment was about 11 % and 24.5 %, respectively. No significant increase was observed in the flotation activity of feldspar. This study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of HPEMP - treatment in inducing a controlled change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving the process efficiency for the processing of rougher tantalum - niobium gravity concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of improving the processing methods of tantalum-niobium ores and concentrates is explained by the mineralogical properties of rare - earth ores. These are properties such as the variable mineral, chemical, and grain size composition, complex morphometric properties, and the dissemination of ore mineral grains of micro - and nanometric size. Iron oxide and hydroxide films on the mineral surfaces neutralize the surface physicochemical and absorption properties of the minerals. Both in Russia and globally, nonconventional (non - mechanical) methods are being developed based on physicochemical, electrochemical, and pulsed energy impacts to improve the efficiency of disintegration and liberation processes of disseminated mineral complexes and to enhance the contrast of the structural, chemical, and technological (floatability) properties of refractory ores. Ammonium-nitrate is a main component in blasting agents and dissolved ammonium residues may be discharged with mine water. The European Union aims to reach a good state of the water quality and recommends ammonium content below 0.5 mg/L for drinking water. Natural zeolites adsorb ammonium from water. In this work, the removal of low-concentration ammonium by commercial natural zeolites was studied in continuous tests. Natural zeolites made up between 83% and 95% of the mineral composition. The major zeolite minerals were chabazite and clinoptiolites and minor amounts of erionite and mordenite were as well present. The five natural zeolite samples, 500~710 µm, were conditioned to obtain zeolites in the Na-form. Ammonium adsorption onto natural zeolites depends mainly on the zeolite mineral type. The chabazite containing zeolite was superior over the four clinoptiolite samples for the removal of low concentrations of ammonium from water (pH of 7.5, flow 5 mL/min, room temperature). The adsorption capacity of chabazite was 48.3 mg NH4+/g zeolites, i.e. 73% of the theoretical exchange capacity 69 mg NH4+/g, during duration over 107 days and almost 6700 bed volumes exchanged. The four tested clinoptiolites had an ad-sorption capacity of 15.7mg to 25.0 mg NH4+/g zeolites. The natural zeolites were rapidly regenerated by an alkaline sodium chloride solution fed to the columns.

A processing scheme is presented to use one single chemical that has multiple functions to re-duce the use of chemicals and achieve more efficient mineral flotation and solids dewatering. Sti mulisensitive polymers which display hydrophilic/hydrophobic transitions in response to changes in temperature or pH have been found to be useful as such multiple function reagents. They can cause the mineral particles to be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic at one stimuli condition and the opposite at the reverse stimuli condition. Therefore, both particle surface wettability and inter-particle interaction forces are reversibly controllable. When the surface is hydrophilic, particle dispersion is achieved by repulsive inter-particle forces whereas when the surface is hydrophobic, particle aggregation is induced by inter-particle hydrophobic attractive forces. In addition, the hydrophobic surface condition allows for the attachment of particles to bubbles. Flotation and solid settling tests have been conducted with a silica suspension treated with the temperature-sensitive polymer poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM). The results indicated that PNIPAM can be used to induce a transition between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface character at temperature lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST around 32oC). Thus, both effective silica dispersion or hydrophobic aggregation and flotation without adding any additional collector have been demonstrated. In tailings treatment, rapid silica settling was obtained with hydrophobic aggregation at temperature above the CST and further sediment consolidation (and water release) occurred at temperature below the CST. Contact angle measurements confirmed the hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition induced by PNIPAM.
