Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

The operation of the pilot plant for the S-C Copper Process during 1976 has provided the basic data for the design of a commercial-scale plant. This paper introduces the commercial aspects of the S-C Copper Process through the presentation of a process flow diagram, a schematic flow diagram and basic design parameters for 75,000 tonnes per year (tpy) copper rod production from chalcopyrite concentrate. Basic operating requirements are outlined and a preliminary estimate of operating and capital costs for a Western Canadian location are summarized. The results have been compared with a modern smelter/electrorefinery to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these two alternatives and to show why the new S-C Copper Process technology should be of interest to the copper industry.

"The Outokumpu Flash Smelting Process was put into commercial operation in 1949. The original process was based on the use of preheated air. The adoption of oxygen enrichment of the flash smelting process air in 1971 was a crucial improvement, especially for smelter capacity. Oxygen use according to the Outokumpu method means selection of the most suitable oxygen content for the process air on the basis of the concentrate composition, capacity and matte grade. The furnace is not bound to only one fixed degree of process air oxygen enrichment; the oxygen content may vary from 21% to 100%.The degree of oxygen enrichment and the matte grade are the most important process parameters in reducing the operating costs of the whole system, including smelting, converting and acid production. Raising the matte grade allows more efficient use of the reaction heat in the smelting stage. Sulphur is recovered in a high-strength, constant-flow gas stream. The blowing time in the converters is reduced considerably.Oxygen enrichment and high matte grade improve the energy efficiency of the plant complex as long as the surplus heat from the system is not wasted. When the operating costs and investment expenditure of the total plant complex are taken into account, a reasonably high degree of oxygen enrichment (35-80°/0) is the best alternative in practice. Existing operating smelters have achieved single-stream thoughputs of over one million t/yr of concentrates.HistoryLocal capital and operating costs as well as lower energy consumption per unit of metal produced are now the crucial factors in determining the choice of process. In the late I940s, the same reasons prompted Outokumpu to develop the original flash smelting process in Finland. Between 1900 and 1940, very few technical changes in pyrometallurgical copper production took place. However, the commercial use of the flash smelting technique began a new era in metal extraction from sulphide concentrates. The characteristic feature of the method is that the concentrate is smelted in suspension: this offers the most favourable conditions for heat and mass transfer, and thus high reaction velocities. Outokumpu was the first to exploit the known advantages of flash smelting in a commercial installation at Harjavalta in 1949."

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate that has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for copper-bearing and copper-activated minerals. Characteristics such as improvement of recoveries with lower dosages and high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31.The most improved results have been seen insphalerite flotation. Plant trial work carried out in the zinc circuit at the Louvicourt Concentratorin northern Quebec has produced data showing superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attain-able with other reagents effectively. The improvement over SIPX adds up to an almost$1,000,000 annual improvement on the mine’s bottom line at present zinc prices.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthates, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by Tennants Research Technology Applications (TRTA), a division of Charles Tennant & Co. (Canada) Ltd., produced a chemically enhanced SIPX that has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The new product has been named FLEX 31. Currently, FLEX 31 is manufactured at the Prospec Chemicals, another division of Charles Tennant & Co. (Canada) Ltd.A large amount of laboratory testing pro-grams have been carried out with FLEX 31 todate (MacPhail and Cousins, 1995; Cousins and MacPhail, 1996). One of the minerals that has a defnite affinity to improved fotation is sphalerite (ZnS). Once activated with copper sulphate, sphalerite has produced some of the most spectacular test work when FLEX 31 is compared directly to SIPX. Plant trials of FLEX31 at Aur Louvicourt Inc. carried out in 1995show that FLEX 31 is far superior to SIPX for activated sphalerite flotation."

This paper gives a brief outline of the mining and milling methods which will be used on the Stirling zinc-lead-copper ores by Stirling Mines, Limited, who have for the past two years been developing the Stirling mine in Richmond county, Nova Scotia, and who will bring the mine into production in November, 1929. No attempt has been made to give the paper a detailed technical character, for the main reason chat, since base-metal mining is something new in Nova Scotia, it is felt that a general description would be preferable before this Society, whose membership is mainly made up of chose engaged in the coal mining and associated industries. Furthermore, as both mining and milling operations will be governed to a certain degree by the experience gained after production commences, there are many points which cannot be definitely stated now. GEOLOGY Before discussing the mining methods, it is desirable to present a general picture of the geology and occurrence of the ore-bodies. The surface rocks in the vicinity of the mine consist of rhyolites of .pre-Cambrian age. These volcanic flows outcrop in very few places, usually along' the beds of creeks or on the shores of the numerous small lakes. Consequently, a detailed geological map is not available. The exploration work carried out to date has revealed a sheared zone extending through the volcanic flows for a distance of over 1,000 feet. Along this zone, there has been a replacement of the rhyolites by a carbonate rock for widths varying from 50 to 230 feet, and it is in this carbonate formation chat the mineralization at a later date took place.

"I.-IntroductionAn attempt bas been made in this paper to provide a basis for appraisal of the future of the coal briquetting industry in Alberta by outlining the processes used for briquetting various ranks of coal, by specifying the requirements of a briquetted fuel, by indicating .the status of the industry in the United States, by giving developments in Western Canada, by assessing costs of processing, and by discussing briquetting researches in progress. Much of .the detail bas been omitted since this might mask, rather than reveal, the more important phases of the problem. Reference will be made when possible to published articles where many of the details can be obtained.It should be stated at the outset that, in the writer’s opinion, there are three possible developments in Alberta as regards briquetting: (a) an expansion of the briquetting of the fines of • non-coking and coking coals of semi-anthracite, and of low and medium volatile bituminous rank; (b) the processing of the fines of high-volatile C bituminous coals; and (c) the upgrading of the lower rank high-moisture sub-bituminous coals. Details of the chemical and physical properties of these coals can be obtained in publications of the Research Council of Alberta (1, 2), and of the Fuel Research Station, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (3).Semi-anthracite and low and medium volatile bituminons coals occur in the mountain areas of Alberta, where, during the upthrust of the Rocky mountains, the coal beds served as the sliding surface. This resulted in the coals being; crushed and consequently they contain a h1gh percentage of fines. In some cases they are high in mineral matter and require to be cleaned before being processed. However, the cleaning of fine coal is both difficult and costly. Both the amount of fines present in the mine-run coal and the amount of mineral matter associated with the coal have increased through the introduction of mechanized mining and through the recovery of coal by stripping operations."

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. Plea se bear in mind that the over-all objectives were to increase physical availability and reliability."

"Most of the minerals employed in Canadian refractory production are imported; in fact, most of the refractories consumed in Canada are imported. Whereas this situation is partly due to a definite shortage of suitable raw materials, e.g., fire clays, it is possible that the potential of certain mineral deposits which could be usefully exploited has not been recognized. There are exceptions, notably magnesite and dolomite, from which refractories are produced in Canada.In many cases, known mineral deposits are located either in inaccessible areas or in areas where transportation would be a major economic factor. This paper lists some minerals and their respective known deposits which could be employed in the production of refractories, irrespective of economics."

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. "The Atlantic Coal Institute illustrates the potential for high technology employment in Maritime Canada, by using local talent and the latest equipment to address a national market. Since I983, contract research for industry and government has generated 31 man-years of high-tech employment, added $2.3 million to the local economy and contributed new technology for Canadian coal. Industry now has access to new procedures for coal minerals analysis, pyrolysis, and geochemistry applied to industrial problems of exploration, beneficiation, conversion and combustion.Research at the Institute is market-driven, based on cost recoveries from contracts. The financial performance to date exceeds that of similar industrial research institutes in major cities and demonstrates that small isolated laboratories are cost-effective. Economic renewal of Canada's resource industries will require increased R&D which in turn can be a source of local employment and pride. Small research teams are more efficient but require an enlightened policy of contracting-out by big business and big government."

"THE REVIVAL of the Mayo mining camp, with particular reference to the activities of United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, has been one •of the more spectacular and also one of the most important of the post-war developments in the Canadian mining field. The geological location of the camp, coupled with other natural disadvantages, have in the past limited the mining area to small-scale, highgrading operations, but the post-war improvement in metal prices has now broadened the possibilities and has led to the considerable success achieved by United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, and the present boom-type development by a whole host of newcomers to the field.LocationYukon which has an area of 207,000 square miles, is showing ever increasing possibilities as a mineral source of great value and more and more attention is being focussed on the Territory. The accompanying generalized map (Figure 1) shows the main transportation routes and mining districts.The Mayo Mining District comprises roughly the eastern two thirds of Yukon Territory lying north of McMillan river and south of the Peel. The district was one of the first in the Territory in which placer gold was discovered, but the occurrences proved of minor importance. Other minerals reported include ores of tungsten, tin, antimony, and several other metals, but of primary importance have been the ores containing silver-lead-zinc-cadmium now being developed and mined in the Keno area. Similar ores have been found over a very considerable area, extending some 50 miles north, 15 miles east, 30 miles west, and 10 miles south of the townsite of Keno Hills, Keno City, a total area of 2,700 square miles."

Newmont&apos;s Phoenix Project is located near Battle Mountain, Nevada and is scheduled to produce copper concentrates containing high precious metal values. High temperature pressure oxidation (PDX) of the concentrates was considered as a treatment option during process development. The metals content in Phoenix concentrates range from: 15-25% for Cu, 1-10% for Zn, 0-2% for Pb and ?27% Fe. The precious metals content of the Phoenix concentrates can range up to ?300 g/t Au and >3,000 g/t Ag. As a consequence it was necessary that any process for consideration should have the capability of recovering both the copper and precious metal values. Typically, gold can easily be leached from the autoclave discharge solids, but silver is chemically bound with the jarosite formed and cannot be directly leached. Laboratory investigations led to the development of a patented PDX process that minimizes the formation of jarosite so that the silver can be leached easily along with the gold. The process was confirmed with extensive pilot plant testing. Excellent solution extraction of copper and zinc was achieved, and both iron and lead were precipitated in the PDX residue. The process produces clean PDX discharge liquors with very low iron concentrations. As an example, conventional PDX techniques resulted in pregnant liquors containing ?5 g/L Fe. However, the Newmont process, which controls the iron and sulfate species, achieved high iron precipitation in the PDX solids and pregnant liquors containing <0.5 g/L Fe. High gold and silver recoveries were achieved by direct cyanidation of the PDX solids. This process has the added benefit of producing PDX solids that demonstrate superior settling and filtration characteristics.

Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

An historical background is presented to provide a basis for the lack of normally expected developmental effort over the first 20-25 years of viable zirconium production operations. This is followed by a description of developing technology, which is the result of years of research and piloting effort directed to the development of a more economical method to produce high-grade metallic zirconium. It is predicted that many of the process improvements described will have a significant impact on future zirconium production methods and consequently on future prices and markets.

"The objective of this investigation was to study the reaction mechanisms during the reduction of iron oxides in the presence of calcium chloride and carbon black as a simplified iron segregation process. The gas phase was analyzed by mass spectroscopy and the solid reaction products were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Mass spectroscopy, combined with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, revealed the presence of several gases at elevated temperatures over time, and the scanning electron microscope in combination with energy dispersive X-ray analysis illustrated the growth of a metallic iron phase on or near the carbon substrate. The results correlated well with similar copper and nickel segregation processes, but also introduced new insights that challenge the simplicity of the current models. The formation and transport of gaseous iron species to the carbon substrate in the presence of steam and hydrogen were evident during the reduction process that was studied; however, there is more happening at a mineralogical level, based on evidence of a liquid phase resulting in substantial growth due to an apparent fluxing effect created by the calcium chloride.These results help to better explain the chemical reactions and, in turn, the thermodynamics and kinetics of iron segregation processes related to the beneficiation of low grade complex iron ores. The results are also applicable to the production of metallic iron and concentrated titanium dioxide from ilmenite ores. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the iron minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional mineral processing techniques are unsuitable or incapable of upgrading the material."

GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.

C URRENT practice in the zinc concentrate roasting plant of The Consolidated Mining arid Smelting Company of Canada Limited, at Trail, B.C., involves passing the furnace effluent gases through an electrostatic precipitator for the recovery of dust. After removal of the dust the gas is treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide by conversion into sulphuric acid ( 1). However. as roasting techniques improved, and furnace productivity in-creased, the rated capacity of the precipitator was exceeded and it was necessary to consider various means of improving the dust recovery. A study of methods indicated that a baghouse using silicone-treated glass fabric, might be suitable for this particular application. Glass fabric was chosen because the temperature of the roaster effluent gases would range from 450°F to 500°F and tempering air was undesirable to avoid dilution of the sulphur dioxide gas.
