An integrated pilot plant for the development of the S-C Copper Process was constructed at Fort Saskatchewan in 1975 and operated in 1976. The pilot plant was designed to treat 9 tonnes per day of a pyritic copper concentrate. A demonstration run conducted during the last quarter of 1976 averaged 90% on-stream time, and confirmed that the process is operable as a stable and integrated unit. The paper describes the parameters and equipment developed for thermal activation of chalcopyrite copper concentrates to make them amenable for the dissolution of iron and zinc, and their subsequent separation and recovery. The resulting high-grade copper sulphide was leached with return electrolyte and oxygen to extract 98.5% of the copper into solution. The copper was electrowon at 650 amps per square metre from purified solution, to produce cathodes analyzing 0.1 ppm Se, 0.1 ppm Bi, 4 ppm Pb and 10 ppm S. The electrical conductivity was >101% lACS and the spring elongation value [ ]350 mm. Elemental sulphur and gangue are removed from leach residues to make a concentrate containing over 95% of the silver and gold and most of the unleached copper. Conventional construction materials such as stainless steel, titanium, Hastelloy, acid brick, rubber and plastics performed well. The containment inherent in hydrometallurgy provided high standards of hygiene and safety.

Successful technology commercialization occurs when a company is focused on creating shareholder value by providing a reliable product at a price point attractive to the market, while at the same time maintaining strict control of its internal cash burn rates. Developing a technology platform and a market platform are equally important in the commercialization of new technologies such as fuel cells. This paper will discuss some of the key barriers that may prevent successful market entry for emerging and disruptive technologies, such as: R&D priorities, supply chain / manufacturing issues, materials, cost reduction strategies, customer needs, developing a market pull strategy, institutional barriers such as existing regulatory/approvals processes and/or current design/purchasing practices, product reliability and resilience, and finding the right path to market. SDTC is an arms length foundation that aims to financially support the successful market entry of emerging and disruptive technologies that can provide significant environmental benefits to Canada. The fuel cell industry, which represents one such technology, is at a critical point in its evolution where market receptivity and the technology platform are converging to potentially create significant customer advantages for fuel cell products being developed today. Since its inception in 2001, SDTC has received over 850 business cases from which it has identified successful strategies to overcome the noted barriers to commercialization. While maintaining commercial confidentiality, the SDTC database will be mined to: Identify specific success stories that have overcome various barriers and discuss their strategy; Identify specific fuel cell related industry experiences that hinder successful market uptake. The general attributes and trends of successful technology developments identified in this paper will hopefully provide guidance to technology developers and prepare them to successfully tackle the next set of hurdles on the path to commercializing their technology, once they have proven their technology works in the laboratory.

"An investigation carried out to determine the tendency of coals to heat spontaneously in terms of time-temperature curves coupled with the resulting oxidation products in an adiabatically controlled laboratory setup is described. Tests were made at differing moisture conditions, including oxidation and also oxidation with either adsorption or desorption of water vapour on coal.From the experimental evidence, there is reason to believe that the oxidation of coal, although an important factor, is not the predominant one in the development of spontaneous heating. In addition to the temperature increase in coal and the gaseous products evolved due to auto-oxidation, the process is accelerated by adsorption and retarded by desorption of water vapour on coal."

"The nature of minor element values and impurities are important both in the assessment of new properties and in the continuing improvement of operating plants. Impurity elements are frequently present as fixed solid solution impurities in association with the constituent minerals of a deposit or process streams in a concentrator. This paper uses five case studies to illustrate the application of simple regression analysis to the evaluation of minor element distribution in both operating mines and new deposits using analytical information readily available. This information maybe used to determine opportunities for improvements to the performance of an operating mine, to the economic assessment of anew deposit, or to the subsequent planning of an experimental study.IntroductionThe nature of minor element values and impurities are important, both in the assessment of new properties and in the continuing improvement of operating plants. Minor element values often contribute appreciable incremental revenue to a complex base metal deposit. Examples of valuable elements include precious metals, but may also include elements such as indium and bismuth which can be recovered at a profit by smelters provided with the necessary recovery circuits. During preliminary metallurgical studies of a new property there is usually a strong incentive to maximize the recovery of such valuable by-product elements. For example, the extent to which the by-product gold in a porphyry copper deposit is associated with chalcopyrite rather than pyrite may determine theeconomics of developing a new property.The nature of impurity elements in base metal concentrates is correspondingly important in minimizing the penalties which may be imposed by smelters in the treatment of such concentrates. Penalty elements include silica, dolomite (magnesia), arsenic, antimony, mercury, nickel and cobalt. The mineralogical association of these minor elements determines the ability of the mine to remove them in the concentrating process. This paper discusses means of assessing the mineralogical nature of such impurities without the use of sophisticated micro-analytical techniques."

A great amount of aggregate is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway infrastructure, concrete production, etc. Igneous rocks are the preferred raw material due to their high strength and abrasion resistance. Rock quality assurance is a key factor and has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous aggregate rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure, i.e. disintegrate and degrade. This phenomenon has a great influence on the quality, strength and durability of aggregates. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as the glycol test, the methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test, have been introduced to distinguish rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these wet-chemical methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and are only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been severely limited. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used in the day-to-day routine of a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. Our research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. Our new approach is based on two rock parameters: magnetic susceptibility and loss on ignition. The measurement of these parameters provides reliable information on the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. Our new approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies and has been implemented on the drill-cuttings of a basaltic andesite quarry. The results of the experiments are discussed in detail, including their impact on increasing resources and environmental protection.

"Introduction Many operators in western Canada, with a background in the minerals industry, talk of ""coal beneficiation"", whereas the coal industry generally uses the term ""coal preparation"" . The sophisticated cleaning circuits and thermal drying units found in western Canada makes the term beneficiation particularly appropriate. This chapter uses standard coal preparation terminology(l,2J and assumes general knowledge of coal preparation unit processes and equipment(3,4,5). The geologic setting and mining methods of western Canada, described elsewhere in this volume, present for preparation run-of-mine coals which have particular problems. As a result the cost of preparation is a higher proportion of the total minesite production costs than in other coal fields . Preparation requirements are determined by the types of coals being produced and the markets in which they are sold. Western Canadian coals have a low sulphur content and do not require cleaning on this account. Prepared coal from western Canada has to be shipped vast distances -to the Pacific Rim countries and Ontario in particular -and the savings in transport costs justify the high costs of preparation. Factors which dictate selection and operation of the preparation processes are: i) Market specifications and coal rank. ii) Size distribution of particles and particularly the liability of coal and refuse particles to degrade during handling and processing. iii) Quantity and characteristics of the associated refuse. iv) Washability characteristics (the distribution of particles by specific gravity within each size fraction). v) Surface characteristics of the fines. vi) Variability of the raw coal. Where the product (coal or discard) has a high fines content special consideration must be given to dewatering, the removal of surface moisture, to give acceptable handle ability characteristics. In the severe winter climate of the western foothills and mountains thermal drying is necessary to prevent freezing of washed coal in stockpiles and railcars."

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

MR. N. T. AVARD : I would like to congratulate Dr. Cameron on his presentation of some pertinent facts about the Coal Resources of Nova Scotia. There is no question but what there is something very definitely wrong about the coal mining situation in this Province. These are times when we can with profit look facts in the face and attempt to solve some riddles. Perhaps now is the time when we can bring some of these coal mining facts into the open and look them over. Co-operatively, we might evolve some helpful solutions. However, I would like, first, to make some specific reference to the Joggins coal field, not as a mining expert, but rather as an executive who has evolved some ideas after some years of practical contact with this field. Dr. Cameron states that existing operations in this area will probably continue for a few years. As a matter of fact, under normal conditions, these mines are good for another twelve years. With the installation of more powerful equipment for hoisting, pumping, and ventilation, an additional five years could be counted on. With one exception, that pretty well clears up mining from the outcrop, hitherto the only method of approach in this field. The chief reason for this present limitation is prolific 'bootlegging' operations. It is too bad that these should have been permitted to ruin a valuable coal field. Moreover, I am cold by competent authorities that this need not have been so. At one time shortly before war broke out there were 74 bootleg operations within an area of one square mile around Joggins. However, despite the fact that these operations were illegal, I could not find any means of stopping then and I believe the same conditions existed in many other coal areas in the Province. For some reason, the eyes of the law were closed. The result is that many outcrop possibilities have been permanently ruined. The exception noted in the so-called Queen seam, which has definite possibilities for approach through the outcrop. This is probably the best coal in the district.

The question of beneficiation of iron ores for this purpose is therefore receiving much attention as more deposits are developed. Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. For magnetic roasting as applied to iron ore beneficiation, the present question is "Can it be economically justified in situations where it appears to produce good results?" In the mining industry, decisions regarding the type and number of comminution tests to be completed typically rely on geologists? observations and conclusions when studying drill cores. Given that these decisions are based on visual observations, they are essentially approximate and often inaccurate from a comminution viewpoint, causing a sizeable margin of error in estimating characterization test needs. Consequently, companies are often forced to perform more tests than necessary, requiring a significant quantity of material, and accruing significant costs. Recently, a new device, called the Hardness Index Tester (or HIT), was developed, offering users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the comminution parameter A*b and the Bond Ball Mill Work Index at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core. In late 2016, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited initiated a trial to investigate if having an HIT device installed in a core repository would make it possible to identify the different rock properties more accurately and determine the number and type of comminution tests required. The application of the HIT was not to replace the standard comminution tests, but rather to generate a high number of comminution and geomechanical parameters for the rock mass. Ultimately, the objective would be to determine the uniformity of the rock mass and, therefore, easily distinguish any potentially problematic zones. With this method, the appropriate number of standard tests could be determined, making the HIT not only an excellent complement to the standard laboratory tests, but also an indispensable device for a geometallurgical characterization. This paper presents the results from the HIT trial using samples from the Odyssey Project, which is a Mine Canadian Malartic property.

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. "A four-inch compound water cyclone (CWC) was tested to evaluate its gold recovery characteristics when processing -4.8 mm run-or-pit, placer material. Neutron activated placer gold particles (840 to 37 microns) were used as radiotracers (/98Au) in a closed circuit ewe test loop to determine concentrator recovery; a procedure believed unique to this study. The effect on gold recovery of gold size and shape, feed pulp density, feed pressure, vortex finder clearance (VFC), ewe cone type, top-size of the feed solids, presence or absence of heavy minerals in the feed, and the quantity of-37 micron slimes in the feed was investigated in over 300 tests.CWC concentration ratio and the top-size of the underflow solids were both affected by cone type, VFC, and feed pressure. Gold recovery was significantly affected by gold size, gold shape, and concentration ratio. These effects are complex, because significant size-concentration ratio and size-shape interactions exist. Radiotracer techniques showed gold particles had a residence time within the ewe of approximately one second. This study suggests ewe gold recovery is a concentration. This work suggests ewe gold recovery is a function of particle size and shape, and the flow rate through the cyclone. CWC cone ""bed density"" is considered important only as a thin, protective layer, which shields coarser gold particles from the entraining currents and facilitates their movement through the CWC.IntroductionCompound water cyclones (CWC), or automedium cyclones, are enhanced gravity concentrators for the beneficiation for slurries of sand, coal, and ground ore (Fig. 1). They are called compound water cyclones because of the compound slopes of their basal cones (Fig. 2) and are operated to suppress classification phenomena in favour of gravity concentration effects. The compound water cyclone is not a new wet concentrator. It was developed in the late 1950s by Dr. Jan Visman through research sponsored by Canada's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources. Since that time, it has become a common unit in coal washeries for cleaning fine coal. CWCs and other versions of concentrating cyclones have also shown promise for heavy minerals and precious metals recovery."

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

"Arsenic released from the lithosphere by mining and metallurgical activities is a growing global environmental concern. Dundee sustainable technologies (“DST”) has developed a processing technology to sequester arsenic by means of vitrification. This method can effectively sequester arsenic trioxide without the need to oxidize from As (III) to As (V). Arsenic oxide is incorporated within a silica glass matrix that is stable as per the Toxicity Leaching Characteristic Procedure (“TCLP”) or EPA Method 1311. In this paper, the conventional treatment of arsenopyrite, commonly referred to as “two-stage roasting”, is discussed along with the options traditionally available for the remediation of the arsenic trioxide by-product. The drawbacks limiting the adoption of this processing flowsheet are discussed and a new processing route is presented for the treatment of arsenopyrite. This new flowsheet outputs an auriferous aluminosilicate highly amenable to gold extraction (> 96%) while eliminating the sulfur dioxide production associated with the second-stage roasting of pyrrhotite and ultimately uses vitrification as a definitive sequestration solution to arsenic trioxide.INTRODUCTION Faced with the depletion of conventional gold ores, the gold industry has witnessed a trend towards the exploitation of arsenical deposits. Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid often found in mineralogical association with gold. Many northern Canadian regions, from the Northwest Territories to Northern Manitoba, Northern Ontario and the Abitibi region are facing significant arsenic challenges. Projects are deemed uneconomic or prevented from going into operations due to the costs associated with handling arsenic material and there are penalties imposed to complex concentrates by smelters. In addition, Canadian mining operations have left an environmental legacy of gold tailings with grades typically of up to 9 grams per tonne with no processing solution as they also contain significant arsenic contamination at grades of up to 20%. Table 1 presents a list of Canadian deposits known to contain arsenic."

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

This paper presents a new type of bolt with full thread and uniform strength, and fabricated with a Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bolt-making machine designed by the authors. The mechanical performance of the new bolt is assessed with strength tests conducted with the bolt in acid, alkaline and saline water conditions, with increasing concentration. The purpose is to test the new GFRP bolt?s mechanical performance in harsh conditions, especially metal mines with acid or alkaline environments. Comparison of the color, weight, size and antistatic ability of the GFRP bolt before and after it is immersion in solution is presented. Changes in tensile and shear strength, torsion, and anchoring force were evaluated in the laboratory. The results show that the mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt are more sensitive in alkaline than in acid and saline water. However, the loss ratio of mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt is very small according to the results of tensile and shear strength, torsion and anchoring force. The new bolt can be useful for applications in acid or other harsh mines.

"Large variability of ore types, escalating variables operating costs and increased throughput require large investment in sensors and systems in mineral processing operations. Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

Rare earth projects are generally in the billion dollar US range or above, and thus failure to accurately predict any loss of revenue caused by impurities within the product or additional effluent treatment costs can destroy an otherwise viable study. Two prime sources of input impurity are considered: impurities in the material feed and from reagents. Running a wind turbine with a 30 tonne conventional magnet requires some hefty engineering and prohibitive investment. This comment is not a criticism of China; the details are from a 2012 white paper published by the Chinese Government that initiated a $6 billion environmental clean-up. Nor is China unique; other plants have had problems as well. There were toxic leaks in the 1990s from Mountain Pass, and the Mitsubishi Bukit Merah Plant (built in Malaysia in 1958) required a $100 million clean-up."

Bauxite resources in China are mainly diaspore ore with the characteristics of low ratio silicon to aluminum. In order to obtain high quality of alumina product, flotation process is generally used to extract the aluminum from diaspore ore. Small aeration rate is needed for bauxite flotation, which requires air to be controlled accuracy. In addition, productive froth from bauxite flotation is too sticky to effects froth transportation. Air-forced XCF/KYF flotation machines are helpful for aeration control, while self-suction GF flotation machines benefits froth transportation. Zhongzhou aluminum plant of China Aluminum Group (Chinalco) uses 7 series of XCF/KYF /GF combined flotation machines to process bauxite. Air distribution, suspension characteristics, froth flow velocity and Al2O3 recovery were investigated, to evaluate the performance of flotation machines in one series and determine recovery contribution of each cell to the entire flotation circuit.The air distribution degree varies from 3 to 4, which is enough for bauxite floatation process. Froth in the tank could flow smoothly with a flow velocity of 2.4m/min. The recovery of the first KYF-40 flotation cell is the largest. Flotation concentrate of Al2O3 is up to 64.29%, the total recovery is about 75%, and the ratio of Al/Si has reached 10.4.
