My speech this morning is not a technical one, rather I will aim to tell you about the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited and how I see it fitting into the Western World aluminium scene.

Dense medium drum separator efficiency was analysed at two Western Australian iron ore concentrators. Efficiency data had hitherto been difficult to accumulate due to the high cost of analysing representative, and therefore large, coarse ore samples. To overcome this problem, recoverable density tracers, which are in effect artificial mineral and gangue, were manufactured in three different sizes (15 mm, 30 mm and 60 mm). Their use enabled partition curves to be studied within one hour of conducting a test: separation densities were generally lower than the feed medium density for all three sizes of density tracer. For a given set of operating conditions, the smaller tracers had lower separation densities and larger ecart probab/es than the large tracers. These phenomena are explained with the aid of a conceptual model of a drum separator, which assumes that the feed ore plunges to the bottom of the drum upon introduction. Particle rising velocities are, therefore, process determining.Medium rheology was altered by adjusting the proportion of solids in the pulp. This was accomplished by changing both the pulp density and ferrosilicon/magnetite ratio. Higher solids volume fractions invariably caused a decrease in separation densities and an increase in ecart probables, most markedly for the smaller tracers. A similar response was observed when feed tonnages were raised.An explanation for these phenomena is sought in the discussion which also suggests means of improving drum separator efficiency.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1·0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2·0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. Past successes of low impact mineral exploration and rehabilitation of mined areas in developed land of subdued contour provide little guidance for similar activity in more sensitive high country or mountain environments. Land management agencies and environmental pressure groups have expressed considerable concern about mineral development in these areas by land especially where the land involved has high environmental or productive values. Mineral explorers are responding with detailed proposals for integration of environmental assessment and mineral exploration at an early stage. A model programme for Fiordland National Park presented in this paper illustrates this approach.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.South-East Asia represents the world’s most productive tin province, mainly from placers. Kalimantan has been a major diamond producer, while in the 1980s a placer gold rush occurred in Indonesia and Malaysia. Reviewing extensive geological and mining data highlights phenomenal palaeo-environmental changes in the Sundaland region, interpreted to be responsible for generating ‘giant’ placers. Correlation of the Late Cainozoic stratigraphy has been facilitated from mine exposures and drill holes distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia, the Indonesian Tin islands and Kalimantan, including contiguous marine areas with extensive shallow seismic profiling data. Knowing the association of rich placers with palaeo-environmental episodes and stratigraphical units has been helpful to facilitate their discovery. All three placer commodities responded similarly to region-wide landscape evolution following Mio-Pliocene high sea levels. Commencing with major regression, important stages comprised: a long period of landscape stability with deep weathering during the maximum Sundaland extent gradually rising sea levels/precipitation initiated slumping of mineralised regolith to form fans, later reworked by braided streams with aggradation (Old Alluvium); during episodic pluvial periods downcutting upgraded placers significant change occurred around Middle Pleistocene time with peneplanation and pedogenesis from Late Pleistocene time ‘modern’ fluviatile deposition (Young Alluvium) filled incised V-shaped valleys.Placer seams show systematic variation in stratigraphic position, in particular cassiterite especially occurs in the Old Alluvium (equivalent Upper Dahor Formation in Kalimantan). Gold is commonly richer in gravelly younger deposits, partly because of secondary precipitation within permeable alluvium. Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. The copper-clay deposits consist largely of goethite and clayey mudstones carrying native copper, cuprite, and chalcocite. The mudstones are of Ordovician age, are interbedded with Fe-Mn carbonates, and probably contained syngenetic iron and copper sulphides. The secondary copper minerals have been derived from post-Devonian weathering in situ and also by deposition from surfaee and underground waters draining the adjacent mineralized volcanic rocks.

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), techniques have been developed to measure the electrical properties of the various minerals. The measured values will be used to model the behaviour of the various minerals in high-tension roll and electrostatic plate separators. The resistivities of ilmenite, rutile and zircon from a number of Australian producers have been measured by applying a DC voltage across a test sample and measuring the resulting very small current flow. By appropriate design of the measurement cell and attention to the experimental procedure, reproducible resistivity values have been obtained, ranging from 106Ωm for ilmenite to 1013Ωm for zircon. However, the conditions of measurement are radically different from those under which electrical separation takes place. It is not certain that the measured values reflect the resistivities seen under high-tension separation, during which the particles are subject to a high intensity corona field. Consequently, an alternative technique for measurement of resistivity under conditions of corona bombardment has been developed. It is based on the experimental procedure of Castle and Yelle (1979) used to measure the resistivity of fly ash under the conditions occurring in electrostatic precipitators. This paper describes the development of the segmented ground plane measurement surface and a high-voltage switched resistor network which comprises the in situ resistivity apparatus. Results are presented comparing the measurements made under corona bombardment with those made using the DC measurement cell. The equipment has also been used to study the current distribution from a corona wire, as a function of high-tension voltage and wire-to-plane spacing.

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017.
