In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver. Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

When Centaur Mining and Exploration produced nickel metal fromlaterite ore at its Cawse nickel project in January 1999, a new era in the nickel industry was heralded in. One of three new laterite projects commissioned that year, new technology and a unique process design has been combined at Cawse to launch what will be amongst the worldÆs cheapest nickel production. However, the road to success has proven to be long and challenging. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Examples from boreholes in an active iron ore mine in the Pilbara iron ore province in Western Australia are presented, as well as explanations for how NMR data can be combined with bulk density logs to provide a continuous dry weight density log based on the original density-porosity equation from Alger et al (1963).CITATION:Hopper, T A J, Trofimczyk, K K and Birt, B J, 2017. The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

Modelling and simulation are important aspects of flotation research, which may assist in the design of new circuits and the optimisation of existing ones. Flotation research in the AMIRA P9 project has developed a methodology for flotation plant modelling based on determination of cell (pulp) characteristics. froth characteristics, and ore floatability (using floatability components). The implementation of this methodology requires the determination of ore floatability, to which end a small flotation pilot plant known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) has been designed and then built and kindly made available to the AMIRA P9 project by Baker Process. The FCTR has a 2 tph capacity and consists of six 130 litre rougher/scavenger cells and six 50 litre cleaner/recleaner cells. The Mintek FloatStar pulp level control system is used to control the pulp level in all cells. A number of experimental procedures have been developed for using the FCTR to obtain the data required for the P9 flotation models. These procedures include how to determine the floatability parameters, Pi and mi, the bubble surface area flux, Sb, the mean residence of the pulp in the cell, t, water recovery. Rw, froth zone recovery, Rf, and the degree of entrainment, ENT. The flexibility of the FCTR allows it to be used in numerous flotation studies such as stream characterisation, reagent testing, grinding experiments, power studies, oxidation studies, and scale-up and simulation studies. This paper will describe the design and operation of the FCTR and the procedures that will be used to obtain data from the rig for modelling purposes.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Using a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a long vortex finder as the separator, a batch sizer was developed for the fast comparative sizing of the coarse solids normally encountered in mineral pulps.Operating times as short as 2 or 3 min gave separations ranging from 16 mesh down to the subsieve sizes.Reproducibility was good and sensitivity was adequate for most applications.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

How the Australasian and Canadian Codes (VALMIN and CIMVal) approach mineral property valuation is described. Brief comment is also made on the International Valuation Standards CommitteeÆs interest in a global valuation standard for Mineral (Extractive) Industries and the South African SAMREC initiatives to adopt a VALMIN-like Code. The conventional tripartite classification of valuation approaches into those that are Market-based, Income-based and Cost-based is outlined. It is best practice to use as many of these approaches as possible (and as many methods as reasonable in the particular circumstances), given the quantity and quality of the data available on the Mineral Asset (which depends upon the state of development of the mineral property). The use of specific methods must satisfy the basic considerations of logic and reasonableness and the purpose of the valuation. The competence, judgement and repute of the valuer are critical factors, since all valuations are time and circumstance specific. What constitutes æMarket ValueÆ in the different jurisdictions is discussed and definitions are given. Challenges facing the globalisation of a VALMIN-type Code for the international Minerals Industry are the influence of real estate valuers and the US jurisdictional idiosyncrasies. This is mainly due to a fixation on real property rights with a preference for using real estate-like comparative sales techniques (Market Approach) to the exclusion of Income-based approaches; a regulatory reluctance in the US to accept that Resources have considerable value; and the International Accounting Standards BoardÆs preference for Historical, rather than Current Value, accounting.

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

Rb-Sr measurements on total-rock samples of granitic rocks from the Mount Isa region have confirmed the existence of two periods of granite-forming activity. The Kalkadoon Granite, together with the Ewen Granite and possibly an older phase of the Sybella Granite, has been shown to belong to the earlier age-group at 1760 m.y.; the Wimberu Granite and a pegmatite associated with the Sybella Granite have been dated at 1540 m.y. The initial Sr ratio suggests that the Wimberu Granite may be new material of deep-seated origin.Further Rb-Sr measurements have confirmed previously-reported K-Ar results upon biotites from these rocks, whilst showing that, in this metamorphic terrain, biotites have lost varying amounts of radiogenic Sr and Ar, and therefore yield ages which are younger than the true age of the second event.

Ilmenite production in Western Australia commenced in 1956. There are now five producers, all in the Bunbury-Capel district, and current total production capacity is about 450,000 t.p.a.The deposits occur near the surface and average between 10 and 50 per cent heavy mineral. About 70-85 per cent of the heavy mineral is ilmenite. Other heavy minerals present include leucoxene, zircon, rutile, monazite, and garnet. The ilmenite contains 52-60 per cent Ti02. and is very low in chromium (0·03-0·04 per cent CrS03)Mining is done by sluicing, drag line excavation, or dredging. Primary concentration of the heavy minerals is achieved by spirals, revolving cones, or Reichert cones. After drying and screening, ilmenite is separated from the heavy mineral concentrate by various types of magnetic separator.Separate leucoxene, zircon, rutile, and monazite concentrates are also produced. Each plant uses a different technique and the processes used include chemical attritioning, screen plate electrostatic separation, high tension rolls, air tables, and dry launders.INTRODUCTIONThe treatment of beach sands in the Bunbury/Capel area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in Western Australia. Nevertheless, since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced (Table 1).The increasing world recognition of Western Australia as a major producer of ilmenite (Table 2) is due primarily to the low chromic bxide content of the mineral (0' 03-0' 04 per cent Cr203), combined with a medium to high titanium dioxide content (54-60 per cent Ti02), supported by large reserves, a stable government, and close access to good shipping facilities. Ilmenite is. produced from these deposits at low cost which enables the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from major markets.

The Cowarra gold mine is at latitude 36°O'S. and longitude 149°19'E. which is roughly 20 miles north-north-east of Cooma.The deposit was· originally worked towards the end of the last century, but the presence of sulphides associated with the gold in the primary zone caused cessation of work when that zone was reached.GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATIONThe principal country rocks are sandstones and shales of Silurian and Ordovician age, both very strongly folded with structural pitches ranging from a few degrees to almost vertical. The mine proper is within Silurian rocks and the main orebody (there are several minor parallel bodies) is developed within a shear striking approximately north, dipping approximately 70° east, and ranging in width from 2 ft to 15 ft but averaging about 4 ft.This shear is impregnated with quartz and sulphides with which the gold is associated. The predominant sulphide is pyrite though pyrrhotite is commonly present in quantity.Arsenopyrite and bornite are present in smaller amounts.Stillwell (1936, 1937a, 1937b, 1938, 1941) has published five mineragraphic reports on the ore.The various levels have been mapped in detail (Figs. 1-3) and the No. 2 level plan (Fig. 1) shows the general relationship of shearing, as now indicated by mineralization, and faulting. Individual specimens of sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode vary considerably in manganese and iron contents, even within the same orebody, so that study of the overall variation of manganese and iron content of the sphalerite calls for the analysis of a large number of specimens. This difficulty has been overcome by analysing a series of recleaned zinc concentrate products, prepared from stope samples and their equivalents, from most of the developed sections of the lode. The analyses reveal that during the formation of the sphalerite the concentrations of iron, manganese and zinc in the mineralizing solutions varied independently of one another from place to place in the forming orebodies, and also in time.The overall pattern of variation of the iron and manganese contents of the sphalerite in the several orebodies of the lode bears a general resemblance to the overall pattern of distribution shown by several other elements, notably, cadmium, lead, bismuth and arsenic. The iron content of the sphalerite indicates that it was formed at a temperature of 6000 C. or higher, but the variation in its iron and manganese contents demonstrates that Kullerud's method for determining the temperature of formation of sphalerite from its iron content must be used with caution if only single specimens of sphalerite are available.INTRODUCTIONThe four chemical analyses available of specimens of practically pure sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode (Table 1) reveal that the manganese content of the sphalerite varies considerably, and that there is a significant variation in its iron content. The variations revealed between individual specimens within the same orebody in the same mine suggest that specimen material is unsatisfactory as a basis for studying the overall manganese and iron contents of Broken Hill sphalerite, unless a great number of specimensis analysed.
