Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

Mine pit slopes in the Pacific Rim are a geotechnical challenge because of the complex geology in which they are developed. Mines are currently being fast-tracked to meet the increase in commodity prices, often resulting in some reduction in ground studies and short-cutting of design procedures. In addition, the resources boom means that skilled personnel are in relatively short supply. At a time when mine pits are getting bigger and deeper, and the engineering is getting more demanding, there is an increased demand on managers to effectively implement the work.   Experience both in New Zealand and the Philippines, display the complex range of geological environments in which pits are being excavated. Working in these conditions has shown that successful geotechnical design requires a strong geotechnical model based on sound geology. An appropriate level of investigation and analyses results in a certain level of understanding for the mine design. There is a point where additional expenditure (on investigation and analyses) is not warranted based on the expected minimal impact on decreasing the level of perceived risk on the project. For most projects in our experience the analytical methods and complexity of geotechnical assessment changes increases as the level of knowledge grows.

A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

Mining dilution is one of the most important factors affecting the economy of mining projects. Instead of quantifying dilution in mining studies, it is common to assume a general dilution such as 5 per cent for massive deposits. Dilution increases the operating costs in the plant by increasing the tonnage of material to be milled. It prolongs the mine life by reducing plant’s effective capacity. It also reduces the feed grade. In most cases, lower feed grade means lower plant recovery. Dilution also increases the cut-off grade, which in turn reduces the overall ore utilisation of a mine. In this study has been investigated applying pre-concentration by dry magnetic separation for decreasing of dilution impact on reserve estimation and open pit design in low-grade iron ore mine. Based on the preliminary open pit design and assumption 3 per cent as dilution factor, the mineable ore in life-of-mine (measured + indicated) has been estimated with Fe = 25 per cent, SiO2 = 49.7 per cent. Based on the experimental test work on the ore, by dry low intensity magnetic separation of dry HPGR product grinding circuit, it is possible to remove diluted waste material and liberated gangue before concentrate plant, so that around 34 per cent rejected and Fe grade increase from 25 per cent to 33 per cent and by weight recovery 66 per cent. The results of the test work showed that this methodology could decrease largely the impact of dilution in the feed to the plant. It also slightly effect on the reducing of dilution factor impact for open pit design and optimisation and leads to increase the mineable tonnage in the low-grade magnetite iron ore mine.

"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. In recent years, there has had a greater recurrence of studies and projects that consider tailings filtration followed by dry stacking to reduce the consumption of fresh water, the space required for disposal, and, eventually, to reduce the costs of the project. In addition, this technique could be required to meet new environmental restrictions to extend the life-of-mine of existing plants or to enable the development of new projects, especially in areas of high social interest. This article is intended to describe the most relevant technical aspects of the design and implementation of an iron ore tailings filtering system and its final overland disposal as well as physical and metallurgical surveys, and laboratory and pilot testing. Furthermore, it is presented how these activities are inserted in the project development to rationalise the resources. The case under study considers an iron mineral wet magnetic concentration processing plant. The outcome tailings are dewatered by means of thickeners, where the overflow water is recycled back to the plant. The underflow slurry is pumped into intermediate storage tanks before proceeding with further dewatering and final disposal. The project consists of a tailings filtration plant, belt conveying systems, a temporary stockpiling system, trucking loading and transportation system, moisture-conditioning facilities (spreading and airing), and final disposal facilities (compacting). Due to the stickiness of the filtered tailings that governs the belt conveying system design, the operating moisture range must be established. Besides, proper technical aspects such as planning, executing, and analysing both the laboratory and the pilot testing data to validate process design parameters; selecting filters; defining spare filtering capacity; handling the out-of-range filtrated moisture; sizing the belt conveying system; configuring the equipment involved, must be considered.

"Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. South Australia pioneered metal mining in Australia and was the main source of copper for several decades. Gold discoveries and mining also contributed significantly to the development of the Colony. Across the State can be seen the holes, the mullock heaps and, in some instances, the remnants of machinery of the past era. In this, the centenary year of the discovery of the Teetulpa goldfield, considered by some to he the most significant discovery of gold in the State, it is appropriate that we should present a paper on the history of gold mining in South Australia. South Australia has not been a major producer of gold with recorded production a little in excess of 15 million grams (15 t). This represents about 0.25 per cent of the Australian total and ranks last of the States of the Commonwealth. The outstand- ing feature of gold production in South Australia has been the succession of short periods of rela- tively high production immediately following a discovery, with payable dirt being quickly exhausted, a fact clearly illustrated by the graph of South Australian gold production (Figure 1).

The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. To improve efficiency, the plant is controlled by the outlet air temperature from the bulk air cooler û the first in the world to be controlled in this fashion. Engineering solutions to address environmental considerations were incorporated at the design stage through features such as the use of ammonia (a greenhouse-friendly gas) as the refrigerant, zero atmospheric discharge and a wastewater collection and re-use system.

"The primary control objective of the project is to achieve milling optimisation by ensuring that the energy available for rock breakage is used as efficiently as possible. This is achieved by increasing the level of mill filing until a process constraint is reached. Stable operation against this limiting constraint is then maintained to ensure long-term optimised operation.Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control optimisation presents a number of challenges. SAG mills have multiple inputs that are used to control multiple outputs (MIMO process). Secondly, the SAG mill loading process is a ‘high inertia’ process that can be approximated as an integrating process. This means that it is open-loop unstable. The hybrid control strategy presented implements an advanced ‘load stabiliser’, which transforms this integrator process into a more manageable first order process, which can be steered stably against the constraints. This SGS hybrid Expert control strategy implemented on both SAG mills at the Porgera concentrator therefore consists of two integrated parts responsible for:stabilising the mill load to a targetdriving the mill load target to the maximum determined by the process constraints (eg maximum power draw) to maximise efficiency and throughput. A comparative study is done between the operation of the plant for a period of a month before and a month after the implementation of this strategy. CRONIMET Australia in cooperation with Speciality Metals International, the mining lease holder of the Mt Carbine Tungsten mine, have demonstrated the preconcentration and processing of large (>12 million tonnes) tailings and mine waste dumps on site in far north Queensland. The first stage of this project has proven the economic viability of preconcentration using sensor-based particle sorting whilst ensuring high recovery of industry critical tungsten minerals – wolframite and scheelite. Sensor-based sorting technology have enabled the production of a sorter product to feed the existing wet gravity plant ensuring higher recoveries and increasing concentrate production. Processing of 1,000 tonne low grade samples using the TOMRA x-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorter installed on site, has reduced the volume of material entering the downstream wet processing plant by up to 60%. The sorted 10-25mm size range produced the highest upgrade ratio (product/feed) of 24:1 and achieved sorter concentrate grade of 1.52% WO3, sorter waste grades below 0.014% WO3 and metal recoveries of up to 93.4%. The appropriately sized, barren sorter waste material is also sold as aggregate and other quarrying products and thus adding to the overall economic benefit of the project. The utilisation of the sorting technology on site has produced an economically viable project, significantly reduced capital cost, and reduced the time to market of the final tungsten concentrate. The next phase of the project includes design and installation of a larger two sorter plant capable of over 150t/h feedrate.

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

Two years ago I was sitting in a big lecture theatre at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie at the annual New LeadersÆ Conference listening to a guy tell us all how much he loved his job, travelling the country ælegallyÆ blowing stuff up à and getting paid to do it. I would have paid to see and do the things he spoke of à now IÆm that guy. From finishing a mining engineering degree at the University of Ballarat, through the job hunt, to firing environmental blasts in Tassie and designing and implementing construction blasts in the middle of the Gold Coast. My name is Rohan Stevens and IÆm a blast-o-holic. While the æjob huntÆ we all embark on toward the end of our degrees is a stressful time, itÆs also very exciting in the current climate. There are a number of things I have learnt through both my hunt for the job that best suited me and working for the worldÆs largest explosives manufacturer. The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

Volcanogenic massive basemetal sulphide and gold mineralisation of predominantly low sulphidation style has been located within Lower Tertiary basaltic and felsic volcanic and sedimentary sequences at Ufuo, in the Left April River area, northwest Papua New Guinea. The four discrete massive sulphide bodies, which have been so far identified, occur within a 3 +5 km area situated within a north west trending structural corridor. The sulphide bodies are all localised on the margins of the corridor where the bounding major through going faults are transected by regional faults. Mineralisation is characterised by massive pyrite-bornite-sphalerite-barite-quartz-anhydrite deposition with later galena-tennantite-chalcopyrite. Minor phases include enargite, goldfieldite and bismuth sulfosalts. Jasperoidal silica lenses and bioturbated sediments are closely associated with the massive sulphides. Basemetal sulphide mineralisation is also closely associated with phyllic-style quartz-sericite- altered host rocks underlying the massive sulphide lenses. This mineralised phyllic alteration is localised to fractures, veins and breccias that cross-cut propylitic style alteration characterised by quartz, epidote, chlorite, adularia and zeolite. The mineralised system possesses several hydrothermal features consistent with a copper-rich submarine exhalative volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) system, ie discrete massive sulphide bodies with abundant barite, associated jasperoidal silica and bioturbated sediments. However, exploratory drilling of the alteration zone underlying each of the massive sulphide bodies has not identified a well-defined zoned alteration pipe that is characteristic of such systems. The alteration is also similar to that of a porphyry-related low sulphidation system in which phyllic alteration has overprinted a regional propylitic style assemblage. The presence of sporadic enargite (and ?tennantite/tetrahedrite) suggest there were intermittent pulses of acid fluids in the system probably derived from exsolved magmatic SO2 which flowed directly to the surface along reactivated faults. The occurrence of tellurium and bismuth minerals is also consistent with a magmatic contribution to the metalliferous hydrothermal fluids. It is proposed that the VHMS orebodies are the products of submarine exhalative deposition generated by a crystallising magma emplaced within crust of on-going tectonism. Ufuo mineralisation is similar to many VHMS deposits elsewhere in that it is unclear whether the metals are derived from the magma directly, or via seawater leaching of the wallrock. Additional studies such as oxygen isotope analysis may assist in resolving this issue. If the metals are shown to be of direct magmatic origin then there may be good prospects for discovering economic-grade porphyry-related mineralisation at depth below the massive sulphide deposits.
