The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.

The Clyde Power Project, and its Clutha Valley Development forerunner, has taken widespread investigations for various hydroelectric purposes both along the valley floors upstream from Alexandra and on the higher schist terrain. As part of this work the nature and extent of many of the alluvial deposits have been resolved and the ages established with varying precision. Gold values have been approximately appraised in some areas as an element of environmental assessment.

Sampling and metallurgical test work during various phases of engineering?studies?is of?paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flow sheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical test work supports the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development.The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical test work are just as important as the metallurgical test work itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should take into account the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical test work program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design.Snowden has observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical test work carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Thank you for your introduction and the opportunity to speak at such an important forum. I feel honoured to be the Tas McKee speaker for this yearÆs conference. I can honestly say that Tas McKee typified the spirit that has ensured the survival of the mining industry despite the modern-day challenges that we encounter. He was one of the most influential people in the New Zealand minerals industry. In 1938, with his father and brother, Tas established Lime & Marble Limited. Over its history, this company evolved from its original base of marble mining to diversify into gold mining and exploration for other industrial minerals, uranium, precious and base metals. He was truly a pioneer that persevered against the odds.   That leads me to the subject of my discussion today. I am going to delve into todayÆs challenges as they apply to gold companies. While we gold miners should be generating record returns, the gold industry shareholder return performance in this buoyant market has barely equalled that of the gold price. It is a dilemma but one that can be resolved with the right strategy.

Most of the world's economically significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VSM) deposits are considered to have formed in submarine arc and backarc settings. While the Kermadec-Tonga arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic arc setting, it remains largely unexplored in terms of submarine mineral resources. More than half of this arc (~1400 km of the >2500-km-long feature) lies within the EEZ of New Zealand, where it is defined by at least one sub-aerial and 33 submarine volcanoes. The NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) cruise of March 1999 provided a systematic assessment ofhydrothermal activity on the southernmost 13 submarine volcanoes along the southern Kermadec arc. Using prospecting techniques based on the physical and chemical detection of hydrothermal plumes, we discovered that more than half (7 of 13) of the southern Kermadec volcanoes host one or more active hydrothermal systems at depths ranging between <200 to 1800 m. Chemical results show that the fluids discharged are compositionally diverse among volcanoes and between sites at a single volcano. Plumes over more than half of the volcanoes are gas-rich (He, CO2, H2S) relative to mid-ocean-ridge (MOR) plumes. In addition, most sites are highly enriched in Fe, yielding Fe/Mn values that far exceed those for MORs. One interpretation consistent with these observations is compositional overprinting by addition of magmatic fluids, which are typically highly enriched in gaseous and ionic components. Regardless of the source, it is clear that the ligands (HS-, Cl-) required to efficiently transport base (e.g. Cu, Zn, Pb) and precious (e.g. Au, Ag) metals to the seafloor are abundant in Kermadec arc fluids. We conclude that modem analogs of VMS deposits are likely forming at multiple sites along the Kermadec arc and within the EEZ of New Zealand.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. This paper identifies the challenges and opportunities for mining companies and communities in investing in human rights compatible, credible, effective and representative company-community relationships.   The paper draws on the work of Professor John Ruggie, Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, and his Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, The CDA Collaborative Learning Project, and the experience of Oxfam Australia. This paper begins with the premise that Australian companies commence operations offshore with high expectations and a willingness to work harmoniously with local communities. However, as companies increasingly engage in global operations - particularly in weak governance and conflict zones - the challenge to establish and sustain rights compatible, meaningful, corporate community relationships and grievances mechanisms becomes both more complex and necessary. Establishing trust and honouring commitments made to communities, including legacy issues, is a critical component in good corporate community relations.   The second part of the paper will identify some of the impacts and challenges of mining that need to be addressed in corporate community negotiations and consultation. Respect for indigenous people's rights and their right to give or withhold consent for a project to proceed is increasingly evident, as is the growing global expectations with regard to revenue transparency. As such, key challenges include: grievance mechanisms; free prior and informed consent; transparency and accountability; the gender impact of mining; resettlement, compensation and benefit sharing; and security issues.   Finally, the paper will provide practical guidance to companies on how to establish effective corporate community relationships. It will include examples, such as human rights impact assessments, gender impact assessments, and establishing local level grievance procedures. The paper will include an Oxfam Australia case study of a dialogue mechanism at Tintaya copper mine in Peru.

Efficiency demands that mine geologists devote the most time to tasks where they can have the biggest effect on production. One of the most time-consuming tasks is geological interpretation of the orebody and turning this into a block model for the planning engineers.The current best practice for mines that require a geologically constrained resource model involves capturing the interpretation of geologists as three-dimensional (3D) wireframes. However, there is significant overhead in the production of valid wireframes from sectional and plan interpretations. This overhead consists of the mundane tasks of digitising polylines, then building 3D wireframes and validating them. While software can simplify this task, the current process is not the best use of a geologist’s time. Under time pressure exerted by planning engineers and the time required for modelling from polylines, geologists are forced to roll-up the presence of other elements or impurities into the interpretation and encode them in the polylines, even though it is often desirable to consider these other factors separately.While it might seem unlikely that mine geologists can produce constrained geological models without the intermediary of wireframes, the technology to accomplish this is getting closer.In this paper, the results of a trial at the Savage River magnetite mine, which is owned and operated by Grange Resources Ltd, are reported. The trial was for a ‘direct-to-block’ implicit geological modelling method. The focus was on creating a geological attributed block model from drill hole geological log data; resource estimates were not determined. The categories modelled were air, waste, low-grade ore, medium-grade ore, and high-grade ore. The block model outputs either resulted in a proportional block model (categories expressed as percentages within equivolumetric blocks) or a sub-blocked model (parent block and one sub-block), which is the preferred block model output at the Savage River mine. When compared to the traditional best practice modelling method, which takes 43 work days, the wireframe-free modelling method took only 26 hours from initial modelling, using both exploration and grade control data. An update using appended drill hole data is achievable within one day. These results represent time savings of more than one order of magnitude compared to the traditional workflow, and, as such, these figures merit serious consideration for the use of the direct-to-block modelling approach at other operations.With these time savings, geological and estimation models can be kept updated constantly; geologists will not need to set aside two months for quarterly or half-yearly modelling of the drill hole data for resource review. Such dramatic time savings will allow for the better use of highly skilled geologists, who are in short supply in the current market, and will also impact directly on downstream mining engineering workflows.

I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

Hydraulic mining shovels can be successively used at open-pit mining operation in severe climatic zone with air temperature interval from -700C to +450C typical for some northern region of the world particularly of Russia, Canada and Sweden, if they would be equipped by special preheating facilities for their diesel engine, water, hydraulic oil and lubrication systems. All shovels manufactured by the Komatsu Mining Germany GmbH for operation at ambient air temperatures down to -50¦C have cast and forged structural design elements, bolted connections made of special steel grades, electric cables with special insulation, flexible high-pressure hoses manufactured by ICE-Champion with connectors made of special steel grades.Generally at the temperatures below -25¦C the ordinary machine has to be stopped, the attachment should be placed in the parking position, the generator should be switched on, or the external electrical power supply connected, for the preheating equipment. For rapid start-up in winter after a long shutdown of a hydraulic shovel, there is a procedure for preheating of the main systems. It is applied for the following systems: engine cooling system, engine oil, hydraulic oil, pumps and drive motors of the propel gears, electric cabinets, machinery house, especially near the ventilation inlets and outlets.Start-up of the main drive engine is permitted at a hydraulic oil temperature of -20¦C, when it has a viscosity of 1000 cSt. In this case the rotation speed of the diesel engine crankshaft is lower by two times than the nominal value and this is the most favourable condition of start-up of the engine and hydraulic pumps and motors, which work with half of their rated rotation speed until the hydraulic oil reaches a viscosity from 100 to 10 cSt. After that the hydraulic system and the entire shovel begin to operate under normal conditions.

This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) owns and manages the Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) located outside Orange in the state of New South Wales. RGM is a new underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is ramping up production to 4 Mtpa. The success of the SLC method at RGM is strongly influenced by production drill and blast practices. Distinguishing features of the Ridgeway SLC operation include choke blasting against broken rock, drawpoint brow preservation, loading of blastholes with different in-hole bulk emulsion densities, precharging of production rings and routine drawpoint fragmentation assessment. These areas are described in the context of RGMÆs required blasting objectives, production drilling and charging activities and innovative practices.

Gold mineralisation was first noted in 1983 at the Wapolu Point area of Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea (PNG) during a follow-up regional reconnaissance program. Subsequent exploration programs through to late 1987 completed 22,147m of costean trench sampling, 553 aircore/RC/diamond core drill holes (16,970.5m total) and metallurgical testwork, predominantly on the Wapolu grid in two mineralised areas.Subsequently in 1988, geostat-istical global and polygonal resources were calculated for the main mineral-ised zones, Didigayagaya and Dagwalala. In 1992, a 'probable total reserve' of 1.9Mf @ 2.4g/t with a 1.2g/t cut-off was calculated for these prospects.

Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? PT Indo Muro Kencana (PT IMK) is a surface gold and silver mine located in Mt. Muro area, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The mining operations of multiple open pits using combination of excavator and haul truck is operated. This operation is performed in two shifts in a day. The articulated dump truck (ADT) with capacity of 40 t and 60 t deliver ore to the mineral processing plant and discard waste material to the waste dump area. Overall, PT IMK’s mining operation department is consisting of two sections, namely mining operation section and drill and blast section. Firstly, mine operation section is responsible to manage loading, hauling, pit service (mine dewatering, earthwork, road maintenance) and mine operation engineering. Secondly, drill and blast section is in charge to manage drilling and blasting (blast engineering, blasting operation, explosive permit and magazine or explosive storage). Additionally, conventional blasting method (ore-waste blasting) with non-electric initiation system is used and sleep blasting is undertaken as bulk explosive is buried for maximum two days. The first purpose of this paper is to elucidate about role of mining engineer in mining operation department (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer). At this point, mining operation engineering practice (fleet management system, production control and mining manpower management) and also blasting daily practice will be elucidated. Daily blasting practice is consisting of surface blast design, explosive engineering, sleep blast practice and the concept of scaled depth of burial to ensure a safe work environment in blasting activity. Next, the second purpose of this paper is to explore workforce evolution and future skills for mining engineer in surface mining operation. Furthermore, strategy to advance future skills such as mining continuous improvement program, training and skills development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer) in order to develop their skills is also discussed. It is expected that in the future, these future mining leaders will become new mining leader, for instance mining superintendents, D&B superintendents and mining managers. In conclusion, it is clear that awareness about workforce evolution, professional development, training, skills development, mining economics awareness and mining continuous improvement program are essentially required as professional development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer), in order to be commercially competitive in their future career and in order to be adapted with future workforce evolution in mining.

AustraliaÆs strong position as an aluminium producer and potential magnesium producer combined with rapid market growth in the automotive industry, proximity to Asia and other natural advantages points to considerable opportunity for downstream processing and manufacture with light metals in this country. Development of a vertically integrated light metals industry in Australia needs to be pursued with vigour, as does the continued development of global strategic alliances through the value adding chain.
