This paper examines the recent trend towards sustainability reporting and the application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) æSustainability Reporting GuidelinesÆ. It also reviews reporting in the context of the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management, as well as the status of public sustainability reporting globally in the minerals industry. The public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades. Initially, separate and to some degree disparate documents were produced to report performance in each distinct area. In the early to mid 1980Æs some organisations had begun to report their environmental performance through some minor commentary in their annual financial reports or through ætokenisticÆ leaflets, often used as public relations exercises. Due to more media coverage and an elevated level of public scrutiny, organisations are no longer merely reporting their good performance, but also their bad and indifferent performance. In recent years these once separate environment, health and safety and community public reports have further evolved to become more integrated, reflecting organisations embarking on the reporting of their progress towards sustainable development. The primary factor in driving the evolution of sustainability reporting has been the increasing influence of stakeholders. Two groups of external stakeholders that have had a significant influence over public sustainability reporting in recent years have been non government organisations (NGOs) and socially responsible investment funds. Significant expenditure is involved in the preparation and publication of a sustainability report however many organisations do not appear to have examined in detail what they are really trying to achieve from their public reporting process. It is important to establish objectives for the public reporting process to achieve maximum benefits. Without a framework of public reporting objectives, the benefits of the reporting process to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that by focussing on the process rather than the document, significant benefits to the organisation can be gained. Indeed, with a proper framework of objectives and targets, the reporting process can be used as a vehicle to drive organisational change, implement management systems and improve performance. An idealised framework for a public sustainability reporting process sees the organisationÆs sustainability policies drive the entire process and determine the sustainability objectives. Specific targets are then set to realise those objectives. The targets will govern performance indicators that should be used to measure the success of target achievement and which will also define what data need to be collected. Evaluation is a key component of the reporting process to measure the success of target achievement and progress in realising objectives, as well as review the need for new targets to be set. The actual production of a public document is only one, albeit important, component of the overall reporting process. The challenges that lie ahead for sustainability reporting primarily relate to the integration of environmental, social and economic performance reporting as organisations integrate their approach to these areas. This will only happen as the culture of an organisation changes to not only accept the principles of sustainable development but to implement those principles in daily operations. The reporting process has the potential to drive that cultural change by communicating the organisationÆs sustainability objectives and setting challenging targets for their realisation. Public sustainability reporting will only achieve its maximum value when it forms an integral part of an organisationÆs sustainability management system and culture.

Fine coal particles have been examined with respect to dustiness and its connection with various physical and chemical properties. It appears that a given coal will tend to be dusty ifthe moisture content is low and if the inert maceral content and overall rank are high. The hydrophobicity ofa coking coal (Young-Wallsend) and a steaming coal (Blair Athol) was examined in detail by a dynamic contact angle technique. The YoungWallsend coal had a higher contact angle, on average, than the Blair Athol sample. This result has important implications for dust suppression and associated processes.

Draft tube circulators are now widely used instead of Pachucas for suspension of slurries in large tall tanks.Precipitators in the alumina industry are an example.Draft tube/tank diameter ratio is critical. Two independent criteria are given for optimum ratio. The hydraulic and energy relationships are defined. These require an impeller of very high specific speed. For a stable and efficient system the impeller should have aerofoil blades with a pitch angle which decreases from hub to tip.The draft tube must be matched to the impeller with inlet baffles above the impeller and flow control vanes below it. Tip recirculation must be suppressed. The tank itself should have a filleted flat bottom.Such a system exhibits the behaviour of axial flow devices with the characteristic undesirable behaviour at low flow.Installed and operating power requirements depend critically on hydraulic design and to a lesser extent on speed reducer efficiency.The problems of re-suspension have been overcome by a patented slot system which also improves behaviour at low flow to permit a more economic design. A number of other practical operating considerations are also discussed.

Mine rehabilitation is a sustainability issue that has been revisited ad infinitum; however, the persistent lack of demonstrated on-the-ground performance and an increasingly intractable rehabilitation liability in Queensland continue to erode the credibility of the mining industry and regulatory bodies. For at least ten years the need to change the current, process-based approach to rehabilitation to an outcomes-based approach has been apparent. The ISO 14001 series temporarily diverted attention from this important point, however it would appear the limitations of an ISO 14001 approach are now more widely accepted. It is proposed that a successful outcomes-based approach cannot be achieved without meaningful community engagement. The apparently intractable nature of the rehabilitation issue will continue to generate conflict and criticism unless all stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process of developing robust and practical outcomes for rehabilitation. Sharing the responsibility will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to recognise the valuable resources inherent in community groups, many of whose committed volunteers have considerable expertise in relevant areas. Community groups should not be seen as adversaries but as allies in the process of solving problems that affect the wider community. Several projects that can be seen as test cases for the engagement of stakeholders exist, and in this paper the process of achieving multiple stakeholder engagement in the context of Environmentally Sustainable Development is discussed.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

The world-class Waihi (>6.6 Moz Au, >41.8 Moz Ag) and adjacent Favona (>0.5 Moz Au) deposits are within a single volcanic-hosted epithermal Au-Ag district located in the southern Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Gold and silver mineralised quartz veins at both deposits are hosted in porphyritic andesite flows of the Waipupu Formation. Both deposits have veins surrounded by intense widespread hydrothermal alteration that is characterised by the assemblage of quartz, pyrite, adularia, illite or interstratified illite-smectite, plus less common chlorite and albite, which is locally overprinted by minor calcite or rare kaolinite. Quantitative mass transfer calculations using Gresen's general metasomatic equation indicate that hydrothermally altered andesite at both deposits is enriched in silicon, potassium, rubidium, barium, sulphur, gold, arsenic and antimony, whereas sodium, strontium and calcium are mostly lost. Iron and magnesium show mixed gain and loss. Element gain or loss can be directly related to the prevailing alteration mineralogy. Addition of potassium, rubidium and barium coupled with the concomitant loss of sodium, strontium and calcium in intensely altered wall rocks corresponds to the replacement of plagioclase by adularia or illite. Partial retention of sodium and calcium reflects the presence of hydrothermal albite and calcite, respectively. Mass balance calculations show distinct element gain and loss that can be related to the intensity and type of alteration mineralogy. However, because most rocks are intensely altered and the progression into less altered peripheral rocks is not observed in this study, the lateral extent of elements gain or loss is unconstrained with anomalies extending at least 200 to 300 m away from major veins.

The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

The refractory nature of residual gold in Kalgoorlie calcines is caused by occlusion in dense pyrrhotite formed by fusion within pyrite grains during decomposition. Fusion of pyrite increases as the rate of heating exceeds the rate of sulphur expulsion. By controlling these rates in relation to each other in a fluidised system fusion is limited and an expanded structure is formed. The increased area presented to cyanide solution, and the decreased diffusion distance, makes gold more accessible for extraction. Gold extraction from expanded pyrrhotite, before oxidation for porosity, is comparable with extraction from fully oxidised calcines from Edwards roasters. A method is suggested for standardised comparison of cyanidation residues.

Mining Lease SML 57 was registered to Mount Kasi on 5 January, 1995. The Mount Kasi gold mine is located in Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island and operated from 1932 to 1946 producing 261,000t of ore at an average grade of 7.5g/t Au. The deposit represents a structurally controlled style of high sulphidation copper gold mineralisation with peripheral low sulphidation mesothermal vein type gold mineralisation. The resource consists of 1,048,000 tonnes of residual soils (eluvium) containing 1.9 g/t Au at 0.5 g/t Au cut off and 1,240,000 tonnes of hard rock at 3.0 g/t Au and 1.0 g/t Au cut. 94 drill holes, 298 auger holes and 85 pits were modelled to outline the resource. 29% of the pits bottomed in mineralisation and it is likely the full thickness of eluvium has been understated. The pit is scheduled to produce 500,000 tonnes of ore per annum to yield 35,000 ounces of gold with an initial 2 years of eluvial ore followed by a further 2 years of hard rock ore. Total capital costs are estimated to be less than 10.0 million dollars with construction planned to commence in 1995. The likelihood of locating further ore is high.

Gas management practices across the Australian underground coal industry have evolved significantly since the early nineties with the introduction of hazard management plans, directional drilling techniques, surface gas predrainage methods, and the widespread use of ventilation and gas reservoir simulation software.The improvements are evidenced by a substantial reduction in the occurrence of outbursts and gas related delays during a period where coal production rates have increased three to four fold. The development of effective gas predrainage strategies have been afforded by the use of reservoir simulators and a significant increase in the availability of measured gas reservoir data, in particular gas content and composition, adsorption isotherms and permeability. That said significant opportunities remain to optimise gas drainage designs and increase certainty in the gas predrainage design process through an enhanced understanding of coal seam permeability and how it is applied in the gas drainage design process.This paper describes the discrepancies between measured and actual seam permeability found during the recent assessment of two pilot predrainage programs executed in the coal measures of Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The results of those programs illustrate the need to better understand the validity of measured permeability data. The history match method employed in the pilot well assessments is proposed as an integral step in the routine gas drainage design processes that will ultimately lead to increased certainty and flexibility in gas predrainage practices.CITATION:Blanch, M, 2017. There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

I want to explore whether it is valid or even useful to talk about sustainable corporations. After 20 years of focus on sustainable development, the concept of a sustainable corporation is not particularly helpful and it may in fact be profoundly misleading. Why? û because it obscures the need for corporations to be recognised as part of a sustainable society, rather than achieving some kind of corporate nirvana divorced from the social, political and environmental reality. It is more helpful to ask whether corporations are ready to recognise that they are one player among many within society û with the demands this would place on them in terms of transparency, accountability and social responsibility. The achievement of sustainable development has become the new corporate orthodoxy of many large corporations. It has become a clichT to argue that corporations must become æsustainableÆ. The achievement of æsustainabilityÆ is encouraged, as the ultimate step in some form of corporate evolution. We are failing to recognise that sustainability a process û not an end in itself. An enormous array of instruments is being developed to measure when sustainability is or is not being achieved. For example, corporate reporting has burgeoned into an art form, which describes æsustainabilityÆ in a variety of ways. There is no external standard applied to such reporting. These descriptions are quite partial and often place the best possible gloss on the companyÆs activities. I have become increasingly uneasy about this rhetoric and this paper has allowed me the luxury of sorting out my unease. I will discuss, largely in the Australian context, the current debate and literature and describe the way some global mining corporations are dealing with these questions, and finally, offer some suggestions which might be helpful at the operational level.

"The innate ability of microorganisms to adapt to changing or inhospitable environments has often been exploited for industrial purposes and forms the basis of many current biotechnological processes. The ability of bacteria to adapt and adhere to specific mineral surfaces ensures that the energetic or nutritional requirements of the cell are met and often serves as a survival mechanism under unfavourable?growth conditions or conditions of stress. In this process, cells may rearrange or modify the macromolecules expressed on the cell surface itself or produce extracellular molecules, modifying mineral surfaces to render them more suitable for growth. The modifications that these molecules produce on mineral surfaces may result in changes to the surface charge and hydrophobicity of a mineral. As a result, these biomolecules may have some potential application as flotation collectors or modifiers.In this work, the effect of long-term exposure of Paenibacillus taiwanensis to goethite and common gangue minerals associated with Australian iron ores on the differential expression of membrane and extracellular proteins was determined. Both groups of proteins play a role in cell adherence to mineral particles. Cells were adapted to grow in the presence of each mineral over time. The proteins expressed on the cell membrane and the extracellular proteins excreted by the cell were isolated and analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D gel PAGE). Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.
