"The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

The aim of the project was to experimentally determine the coefficient of restitution, and static and rolling friction of Eskom-grade coal for discrete element modelling (DEM). These parameters will be used in further DEM studies to simulate the flow and behaviour of coal during conveyance. For the simulation to yield realistic results, the parameters for the different coal shapes identified in the samples were determined. DEM uses spherical particles, and it was found that the difference between the DEM default parameters and those measured is significantly different, by as much as 97%, which illustrates the importance of experimentally determining these parameters. The spherical particles in DEM can be used to construct the various coal shapes identified, and the parameters measured can be used to simulate realistic results. The conveyance system can then be optimized accordingly.

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country?s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress?s Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since then there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: ?A drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully ?The globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists and ?The introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its regulations, the much publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, its associated Scorecard, and the Draft Royalty Bill.

"While methods exist to allow the simulation and optimization of existing flotation operations, there is a deficit in the ability to predict the performance of a new ore type pre-processing. A laboratory scale batch flotation testing methodology has been developed to assess the flotation potential of ores (known as the JK Floatability Index or JKFI). Previous work conducted by Alexander and Collins (2008) showed that the test could be used to predict full scale results in base metal ores. In this work, JKFI tests were applied to three different types of ore and one blend from a greenfields gold deposit to show the test applicability to flotation of precious metals. The results from the JKFI test on one ore type were then used to predict the response of all ore types (including the blend). To validate the predicted kinetic parameters, a comprehensive survey was performed on a pilot plant where each of ore types was processed in the circuit. An acceptable agreement was found between the experimental recoveries and predicted recoveries which indicate the potential of this method for use in predicting the flotation response of an ore.INTRODUCTIONOver 100 years, flotation has been considered an efficient method to concentrate different types of sulphide and oxide minerals and coal. Thus, numerous research studies have been undertaken to find an appropriate model to predict the behaviour of particles in flotation circuits (Barnwal et. al., 2006; Bascur and Herbst, 1983; Cecile and Villeneuve, 1991; Deng et. al., 1996; Zheng et. al., 2006). Most methods are based on the ore flotation response in an industrial plant which is expensive and time consuming to characterise. It is difficult to reliably predict flotation response for new types of ores in industrial scale plants.The floatability component modelling (FCM) approach, developed within the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, has been used to derive models of operating flotation plants for the purpose of simulation and optimisation (Alexander and Morrison, 1998; Alexander et. al., 2000; Varadi, 2006). This approach has been applied at a large number of operating sites treating a wide variety of ores. The approach requires metallurgical surveys to be undertaken in conjunction with batch flotation tests and cell characterisation. This allows ore and machine parameters to be derived, which are then used in the P9 Flotation Model. The development of a FCM generally requires a large commitment of resources and time. While there has been significant support of this approach in industry, the FCM approach is limited to ores already being processed (Runge, 2004; Wightman, 2006)."

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. "A new approach to measure process conditions in flotation cells is presented. Real scale flotation cells in a Zinc circuit are imaged using Outotec LevelSense sensors based on electrical resistance tomography. The latest results from long period plant tests show that the sensors together with FrothControl analysis give new information that correlates well with other process parameters. The sensors can compensate for electrical contact contamination using an automatic calibration technique and they are basically maintenance free. The results indicate that using the LevelSense sensors and FrothControl solution, the process control and optimization can be done automatically, stabilizing and improving the metallurgical performance of the flotation process.INTRODUCTIONThe froth flotation process is widely used in mineral industry for the separation of minerals from low-grade ore slurry. Different property parameters of froth and slurry could be measured to monitor and control the flotation process: air bubble size distribution, flow dynamics, thickness of the froth bed, amount of solids in the froth, etc. Some techniques already exist that can be utilized in studying these important parameters on-line. Examples of the techniques are the high-speed video imaging, simple conductivity probes, ultrasound techniques, floats and pressure transducers (Maldonado et al., 2008). These techniques, however, often suffer from some limitations. For example, the video imaging only gives information from the surface of the froth, simple conductivity probes suffer from contamination and the floats may get stuck and therefore do not give reliable signal for process control and optimization."

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. "The development and testing of a simple low-cost gauge for measurement of tension in a cable bolt grouted in a borehole are presented. Its principle is based on a resistance wire which is wound on a 70 cm length into the spiral grooves of the wire strand cable bolt. Readings are then taken by a robust automatic data logger with a several day autonomy or by a portable readout. In order to have a complete profile of tension along the cable bolt, a number of tension gauges can be installed along its length.This paper provides a description of the development and laboratory calibration of the tension gauge and addresses the two modes of loading for a cable bolt in a rock mass, namely pure tension and shearing at a joint location.In the second part of the paper, four field tests in underground and open pit mines are reported. The first test was used to substantially modify both the gauge and the readout unit principles while the other tests which are still on-going show a very satisfactory behaviour of the modified version of the tension gauge. IntroductionCable-bolting is often used as ground support in Canadian mines for a variety of applications. In underground mines, cable bolts can be installed vertically at the back of cut and fill stopes or in an inclined fashion in the walls of large open stopes. Alternatively, cable bolts at Mines Gaspe (Noranda Inc.) are used in a fan-shaped pattern from a drill drift to stabilize the inclined roof in 25 m wide open stapes. This new application oriented our research efforts toward the design of a novel instrumentation to monitor the efficiency of most commonly used 5/8-inch cable bolts."

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. "For mining operations globally, the scale and criticality of the grinding mill drive has meant that selection of the correct mill drive technology is paramount. With so much depending on the successful implementation of the electrical drive system— safety operation, timely installation, availability, energy efficiency, minimum maintenance and extend its use as tool to assist during mill liner exchange—customers are justified in their scrutiny and slow adoption of new drive technology. From the first installation of low, fixed speed synchronous motors to the introduction of the current source and further voltage source variable frequency drive, innovations require long periods of time and mining customers willing to push the industry forward. In recent years, the variable frequency drive has been the stepping stone for a new generation of mill drive technology. In use for decades in other heavy industrial applications, the drives allow for system optimization in a myriad of ways. The most dramatic of changes is in the design of the motor. Where in the past motor design was bound by line frequency, today the designer can optimize machine size and, more importantly, eliminate the need entirely for the synchronous motor. Induction motor design has now progressed to the point where low speed operation is possible at efficiency levels nearing those of the synchronous design. Moreover, the simplicity of the squirrel cage design means that availability, reliability and spare part requirements are greatly improved. As the next step in the evolution of large pinion driven grinding mills, the low speed induction drive offers a new reliable and robust system to the market.IntroductionAs deposit grades continue to decline, new ways of processing ever greater concentrator throughputs have been required to maintain throughput efficient and profitable operations. Furthermore, the high risk nature of mining developments requires a constant search for safer, higher availability and more efficient equipment design. Limitation of downtime is a key factor in ensuring mining operations can be sustained through volatile market conditions. Often processing the entire mine throughput through just 1 or 2 lines, the crushing and grinding circuits are of particular criticality to the uptime and, thus, profitability of any mining operation."

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- [ ] duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. [ ] The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. , I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which, thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes, where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OT THE ST. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. Coal mining has evolved into extensive use of continuous mining machines for development and production. This has resulted in an increase in dependence on the versatile continuous miners. The present-day continuous miners are powerful in terms of rated power but are still plagued by wear of bits which hinders development and production as the bits have to be continuously changed at regular intervals. Previous attempts to analyze bit wear has been either restricted to the theoretical approach and or laboratory testing. This paper discusses about the overall aspect of bit and drum design for different conditions. Using the laboratory model set up, numerical models and field testing, a new bit and drum design was analyzed to evaluate their performance under different conditions. The results proved that a newer bit design and drum design were successful in limiting the amount of wear as well as improving the performance of the continuous miner and production.
