The major functions of longwall headgate entries are to provide access ways to the outby submains or mains for coal transportation and to the longwall face for fresh air and for transporting men and material during longwall operations. Any roof control problems such as cutter roofs or roof falls in the outby headgate entries could result in significant production delays to the longwall face and may be a threat to miners' safety Under a thinly laminated immediate roof and a high horizontal stress field, even a longwall headgate entry that has an angle of less than 45 degree to the maximum horizontal stress may experience roof deterioration in the outby headgate if the longwall panel mining sequence and retreat direction are not properly considered. This paper attempts to analyze the causes of the roof control problems experienced in the longwall gate entries at our Cumberland and Emerald mines in Pennsylvania and to determine the optimal longwall panel mining sequence and retreat direction for the future mining area at Cumberland

Due to ever-increasing stripping ratios associated with the No. 8 Seam at the San Juan Mine surface operation, BHP Minerals decided to implement longwall mining for the extraction of the substantial future reserve base. In preparation for longwall developments, BHP opted to first develop a small-scale pilot operation within the No.8 Seam on an adjacent lease to address geotechnical/geological concerns related to ground control, subsidence, caving, panel and entry design, and operational issues related to entry development and proper face equipment selection. Room-and-pillar mining methods are currently being utilized to develop a full extraction panel for a wide range of geological, geotechnical, and geomechanical evaluations aimed at characterizing and assessing the mineability of the No.8 Seam. Variable roof and floor conditions, coupled with a multi-bench coal seam, require that a number of mining horizons, opening geometries, and roof and rib support fixtures be evaluated relative to expediting gate and panel developments. Issues related to development of timely caves in areas subject to overlying sand channel deposits will also be addressed through underground in-seam stress and deformation measurements, and interburden and surface subsidence monitoring. This information will ultimately be used to evaluate face support and gate and panel pillar/entry development requirements. The current depositional model for the property, developed from an aggressive drilling, highwall mapping, and lineament evaluation program, will also be refined during the Pilot Mine study through extensive in-trine mapping, additional roof and floor drilling and physical property testing, and determination of the in situ principal horizontal stress field.

During the last decade mechanical rock excavation has become increasingly widespread in the mining industry and, more in general, in excavation engineering. This technology, especially the tools and their operating mode, has developed according to empirical procedures and for this reason their validity should be ascertained by systematically re-examining the rock breakage processes. This topic has been approached in the framework of a joint research project involving the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Wollongong (Australia). The investigation has been carried out experimentally as well as with the methods of numerical modelling which is based on fracture mechanics principles. The first results of this integrated research led to the proposal of an interpretation of rock breakage by means of drag tools and to the identification of a basic correlation between the rake angle of the tool and the grain size of the rock fragments produced and, therefore, the energy efficiency of the operation.

"There have been many design practices utilised within the coal mining industry to arrive at the minimum densities of primary ground support required during roadway development. This paper demonstrates the practical use of empirical databases, and focuses on the main drivers for ground support as demonstrated in conceptual models.Golder Associates’ empirical databases used for ground support include a Primary Roof Support Database and a Primary Rib Support Database. Both are based on successful ground support designs installed in mines in Australia, the US, the UK, South Africa, New Zealand, and Europe. The term “successful” refers to those designs that were used on a repeated basis for the purpose of roadway development.The Primary Roof Support Database indicates that the major factors influencing successful roof support designs are roof competency, expressed as the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and in situ stress. As roof displacement is essentially a function of horizontal stress and roof competency, in order to provide some form of measure as to the likely magnitude of roof deformation during roadway development, the depth of cover is divided by the CMRR to arrive at a “Stress Strength Ratio” (SSR). The database indicates that the higher the SSR, the greater the likelihood that the roof will require higher densities of support.In regard to the Primary Rib Support Database, it is evident from the current database that the primary factors affecting the capacity of rib support required for a successful design are roadway height and depth of cover. In order to provide some form of measure as to the likely magnitude of rib deformation during roadway development, the depth of cover is multiplied by the height of the roadway to determine a “Rib Deformation Rating” (RDR). Similar to the roof, the database indicates that the higher the RDR, the greater the likelihood that the rib will require higher densities of support.These databases have been used to help determine the minimum primary ground support designs required at many mine sites in Australasia, Europe, and the US. This paper will demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of these databases at two selected mines in Australia and the US.In order to improve the Primary Rib Support Database, this paper will also propose a new rib deformation rating based on the addition of site specific coal strength data for the Australian mines. The proposed rating attempts to capture the main variables that define the behaviour of a buckling column."

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative longwall tailgate roof support and have grown in usage during the past few years. Heintzmann Corporation has been installing pumpable roof supports at the RAG Resources Emerald Mine in western PA since 1998, where they have provided effective roof control in their longwall tailgates. Despite the success of these supports in this application, questions remain regarding critical design issues for optimizing the use of this support technology. The support loading profile is characterized by a high initial stiffness with peak loading occurring at less than one inch of convergence, followed by significant load shedding with a post failure capacity comparable to that of wood cribbing. Therefore, the key to optimizing the support utilization is to provide sufficient load density to prevent convergence from occurring beyond the peak loading capacity. This requires an understanding of how the supports interact with the ground conditions, hence measurement of the ground reaction curve. In order to obtain this information, pumpable roof supports were instrumented to measure support loading. Roof deformation and roof-to-floor convergence measurements in the vicinity of the instrumented supports were also made. The experimental parameters for the installation were the support spacing and water¬to-solids ratio of the grout, which controls the grout strength and ultimately the maximum capacity of the support. The study clearly shows that at this mine a 24-inch diameter support is fully capable of providing adequate ground control under depths of cover of 750 ft as only 50 pct of the available support capacity was utilized outby the longwall face. It was also shown that the 2.00 to 1 water¬solids ratio, despite providing a slightly softer support response, is sufficient for maintaining the same degree of roof control provided by the traditional 1.75 to 1 grout mix. The 10-ft spacing of the supports did not cause any ground control problems outby the face. However, inby the face the performance of the support is degraded once the peak capacity of the supports is exceeded. It appears that the large load shedding behavior, which is characteristic of this support following peak loading, allows the immediate roof to separate. When this happens, the support is unable to regain control of the roof in time to prevent failure of the immediate roof beam.

It is shown that by monitoring longwall leg pressures in real time, warning can be given for significant weighting events and the formation of roof instabilities, such as roof cavities, several hours in advance. Longwall Visual Analysis (LVA) is a software package that continuously monitors shield pressures and shearer position in longwall mines. LVA has been running on 19 Australian longwalls for up to four years, and as a result a very substantial database of shield pressure trends in a wide range of longwall situations has been collected. This database has been analyzed to develop indicators that will give operators and geotechnical engineers advance warnings of developing conditions such as weighting events and difficult roof conditions. LVA displays live charts of data, such as shield leg pressures, loading rates, and yield frequencies. Data analysis techniques were applied to historical data records from multiple longwall sites in order to develop a ?Cavity Risk Index? (CRI). The CRI indicates the risk of roof cavities developing, and it is based on pressure trends that indicate significant yielding and loading rates spanning a region of relatively low support. Case studies from different longwalls are given, showing how the CRI can give real-time advance warning of the formation of roof cavities with their anticipated location on the face. The limited number of case studies done so far indicate that the predictions have a high degree of reliability, but more work is required to quantify this.

Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National institute for Occupational Safety and health are evaluating stress and displacement measurements in a longwall coal mine. The objective is to determine the best indicators of coal bump hazards during operations so that mine foremen and technical stall can make more informed intervention decisions to protect miners from coal bumps. Instruments were clustered in two panels, a yield pillar, and the immediate roof and floor of a two-entry longwall coal mine. Data were gathered continuously from a variety of instruments as mining proceeded toward and past the instrument cluster. Researchers and the mine's technical staff evaluated these data with respect to coal bumps and bump mechanisms. Selected graphs were then presented to mine foremen on a periodic basis to test their usefulness in identifying hazards. Of particular interest was the use of horizontal stress data from the immediate roof. To measure changes in horizontal stress, a new technique was devel¬oped for installing a grouted biaxial stressmeter in the roof. An evaluation of the development of this stress monitoring system in producing data beneficial to mine foremen is presented.

The Pennsylvania Joint Coal and Gas Committee Gas Well Pillar Study of 1956 is the bases for well protection pillar design in the US and many other countries. An update was necessary because the well construction common to the gas and coal industries as well as mine configurations, mine depth, and extraction thickness have changed considerably since 1956. As initially envisioned the update would involve a similar empirical study that formed the basis of the initial investigation. However, there are no records of any gas or oil well failures related to coal mining since 1956 when mines followed the initial recommendation, making an empirical study problematic. Thus, the study had to be more analytical, which in return required at least some fundamental research into the behavior of the interaction of coal mining and oil and gas wells. A call to industry about research they have undertaken resulted in obtaining excellent research on the subject from three companies; Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., CONSOL Energy Inc., and Range Resources. These research projects were initially undertaken for internal use and not previously published. John T. Boyd Company reanalyzed these studies and determined how their results would affect protective pillar designs. These research projects pointed to the importance of horizontal movement and shear caused by subsidence and the strength of pillars and their foundations. The importance of geology is important in understanding horizontal shear, ground movement, and floor strength. The failure modes of casing and pipe needed to be understood so the threshold of these movements and stresses could be determined.

EGAT Mae Moh Lignite Mine in Thailand produces about 16 million tons of lignite annually from open-cut mining. The coal is used to generate 2,400 MW of electricity. In the near future, however, the coal must be extracted from underground at 400? 500 m (1,312?1,640 ft) deep from the surface. The problem is the thickness of the coal seams. There are two coal seams that are about 25 m (82 ft) thick with 20?25 m (66?82 ft) of interburden between them. Up to now, many mining systems for thick coal seams have been used and improved in the world. However, where the thickness of coal seams is beyond the limitation of the current mining technology and system, an applicable mining system has to be introduced, considering influencing factors such as caving and subsidence. In order to investigate thick seam mining systems and propose a new mining system in ultra-thick coal seams in Thailand, a joint research group was established by Japanese and Thai researchers and mining engineers in early2009. This paper describes underground mining systems for thick coal seams and proposes an innovative underground mining system for thick coal seam, ?eco-friendly underground mining system?, considering geological, geotechnical, and environmental conditions in this mine. This paper discusses its applicability to this mine by means of numerical analysis from the geotechnical point of view.

A deep mining operation in the Lower Kelly (Imboden) seam in Wise County, Virginia experienced severe ground control conditions in its attempt to develop reserves situated under increasingly higher cover conditions. Ultimately one of only three mines capable of providing access to a large reserve area had to be abandoned. A thorough geotechnical exploration program was carried out to allow characterization of the critical roof and floor rock strata in accordance with the modified geomechanics classification system. The principal roof and floor rock stratigraphic sequence types were defined and mapped throughout the reserve area along with other critical geological factors. A ground control study based on the geotechnical findings provided a quantitative analysis of the causes of previous entry instability. Further analysis of pillar and entry stability identified configurations which would remain stable for the variety of strata types and range of overburden depths within the remainder of the reserve. Mine designs based on the geotechnical evaluation have, to-date, provided the stability required for long-term future development - of the reserve area. However, some areas of difficult ground were encountered which could not be anticipated with the drill data available at the time of the original study.

The design of support for underground excavations is a complex process in which the interaction between supports and the rock mass must be evaluated. The strength reduction method (SRM) is useful because it provides a stability factor of the supported excavation that can easily be compared between support alternatives. The method is based on numerical model analysis where the stability factor is determined by reducing the rock mass strength until collapse is indicated in the model. This paper presents the results of validation studies that were conducted using the FLAC3D stress analysis software to compare SRMcalculated stability factors to the empirically based Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and the Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS). The objective was to determine whether the SRM, with its basis in mechanics, would predict similar outcomes as the fundamentally different ARBS and CMRR methods with their basis in empirical observations. A total of 450 different scenarios were evaluated in which the geology, horizontal stress, depth of cover, entry width, support spacing, and support length were varied. The results showed that the SRM-calculated stability factors were able to satisfactorily capture both the ?weak bed? and ?strong bed? adjustments in the CMRR. The SRM results were found to be well correlated to the ARBS stability factors for the 450 cases considered. Further analysis showed that the SRM accurately captures the effect of bolt length, depth of cover, and entry width on the overall stability of an entry.

The condition of roadways in the Deep Main seam at Asfordby mine, operated by RJB Mining (UK) Ltd, is strongly dependant on drivage direction relative to the maximum horizontal stress. The mine is laid out with gate roads driven approximately parallel to the maximum horizontal stress giving favourable drivage conditions. This has led to particulary difficult conditions for face installation headings which have to be driven to an increased width and at a high angle to the horizontal stress. A solution to the formation of face headings is described making use of stress relief with the face heading being driven in the zone of reduced stress surrounding a previous heading. In implementing this solution use was made of results from computer modelling and detailed monitoring of roadway behaviour. High reinforcement densities including cable bolts were used in supporting the headings. The experience provides an example of a traditional technique being applied more scientifically. The results obtained demonstrate the effect of stress relief and reinforcement methods in altering drivage conditions and suggest possible alternative strategies for the formation of future face headings in these conditions.

Pillar recovery continues to be a significant ground control hazard. During the past decade, 10 miners were killed during pillar extraction operations in southern West Virginia. Studies conducted during the past decade have identified a number of "risk factors" that can be used to evaluate pillar extraction plans: Cut sequence Final stump Timber or Mobile Roof Supports Roof bolting Intersection span Depth of cover Roof quality Age of workings For each of these factors, rock mechanics science suggests which alternative would be expected to be more risky. For example, numerical models were used to evaluate different cut sequences, and indicated that less roof convergence occurred with the outside lift method than with the Christmas tree in the particular environment simulated. For many of the risk factors, accident statistics confirm the science. One finding was that currently almost 70% of the retreat coal in southern WV is being mined with MRS. In contrast, timber supports were used in 70% of the past decade's pillaring fatalities. This paper discusses each of the risk factors in turn, presents the relevant accident statistics, and shows how the risk factors can be combined to estimate the overall hazard. It also addresses the use of pillar design to minimize the risk of global stability hazards including squeezes. massive collapses, and bumps.

Mining in situations where there exists a potential hazard from inundation has always existed in coal mining, and often reserves were left unmined in favor of reserves with no such hazard. However, increased pressure on expanding the minable reserves and on producing low-sulfur coal, has made mining under water hazards necessary in many parts of the world. Recent joint efforts by the authors to develop case-history data bases of mining under water hazards has allowed the bringing together of Chinese and United States experience and guidelines for such mining. In China, mining under water hazards has been successfully accomplished for a number of years, allowing the development of a good data base from which to draw guidelines. In the United States, much more limited experience, and the longer delay in adopting longwall mining compared to the rest of the world, has forced reliance on a more limited data base and European experience. In the United States (and Canada), the data base is continuing to increase as more operations start-up. Developing a generally-applicable set of guidelines for international use, based upon extensive Chinese and other experience, appears feasible. The Chinese and United States experiences are detailed by case histories.

Jim Walter Resources, Mining Division, employs the retreat longwall mining system as the primary method of coal production. The strata control aspects of developing and maintaining roadways for retreat longwall mining have continued to improve and advance at Jim Walter Resources. New and innovative concepts in pillar design, roof and rib support, as well as longwall face support, have been combined to provide better strata control. Control of immediate roof breakup in the headgate and tailgate entries has been a problem at Jim Walter Resources' mines. The application of roof trusses as supplemental roof support failed to provide the desired strata stability. The immediate roof deterioration has been controlled through the installation of increased density of roof bolts in the affected roadways. Control of the rib sides has been a documented problem at Jim Walter Resources' No. 4 Mine since its start-up. The installation of 3/4 inch diameter roof bolts at 2 ft. spacing failed to control rib rolls. The development and application of a yieldable rib support system provided the desired results. Rib rolls have been virtually eliminated where the yieldable system of rib support has been installed. An evaluation of longwall panel development using the total yield pillar mining plan has been completed. Results of the strata stability and other operational data have been compiled. Coal production and gate entry stability were not adversely affected using the total yield pillar mining plan for longwall panel development. Strata Control on the longwall face is provided by the face support system. Excessive convergence and roof breakup along the longwall face have been experienced at several of the Jim Walter mines. In an effort to eliminate this problem, an evaluation of higher setting pressures for longwall face supports is being conducted. Results have been inconclusive to date. Each of the above strata control projects will be presented as case studies. Since Jim Walter Resources business is coal production, emphasis will be directed toward the application rather than the theoretical aspect of the projects.

The paper describes research undertaken on an ECSC/K HSE project which investigated several potential physical principles which might be harnessed to provide a non-intrusive means of determining the extent of failure in the near roof of mine roadways and tested the most promising in the laboratory and in the field. It was concluded that the principles which warranted further development were thermal response and laser vibration measurement. In the latter case there is a need to develop an efficient means of imparting energy to the seam to induce sufficient vibration. A new, SIMRAC funded Project will progress work in the field of thermal response.

This paper concentrates on subsidence measurements, applied over the thick and steep seam mining in the Rocky Mountains Region of Western Canada. The studies to date indicate that two new subsidence monitoring techniques appear to be the most suitable methods for these conditions. The computerized telemetry and aerial photogrammetry systems are being tested for the reliability of the systems during the winter months within the net- work of laser surveying over the workings of the new hydraulic mine.

The development of increasingly more sophisticated and powerful retreat longwall equipment has led to ever wider and longer panels. To maximize gateroad development efficiency, provide for effective face recovery, andlor reduce ventilation pressures, entries are cut across longwall panels in advance of longwall retreat mining. These entries must be supported to prevent falls of immediate roof in advance of the face. Recently, cut through entries and predriven recovery room entries have been supported with various combinations of roof bolts and passive support. The cost and relative success of these support systems has varied considerably. Eighty-Four Mining Company, Fosroc, and Sub-Technical have developed and implemented an efficient, yielding, multiple component, cement crib to support longwall panel cut through entries and pre-driven recovery rooms. The cutable crib consists of an inexpensive flyash cement pillar poured in a bag, within a temporary metal form. The form is moved to a subsequent cutable crib location after the initial hardening of the flyash pillar. The remaining entry height between the mine roof and the top of the flyash cement pillar is filled with a specially designed bag filled with Fosroc's Tekset cement formulation. The diameter of the pillar and thickness of the Tekset bag are designed to accommodate the anticipated front abutment loading and entry convergence.

The WTZ coal mine is located adjacent to an auxiliary dam in P. R. China. The mining-induced ground movements are calculated using a 3-D numerical procedure based on the finite difference method (FDM) to judge whether the extraction of the coal seam will have a negative impact on the dam. First, the values of the rock mass mechanical parameters in the numerical model are estimated using the available literature that relates intact rock and discontinuity properties to rock mass parameters. Then, based on available surface subsidence monitoring data for an area in WTZ mine, the main mechanical parameters of coal and rock masses are calibrated by a back analysis procedure that combines an experimental design technique with numerical simulations. Then the reliability of these rock mass parameters is verified. Finally, according to the planned mining sequence, predictions of mining induced surface subsidence are computed in steps, and the boundary of the ground movement area of each step is determined. The nearest distance from the boundary of the surface movement area to the edge of the dam foundation was found to be about 1347 m. The maximum surface subsidence within the mining area turned out to be 2.7 m, and the maximum settlement point was found to be close to west-south corner of A2 mined area. These findings led to the conclusion that the coal seam mining would not cause dam damage.

"The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) has been developed as an engineering tool for the prediction of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of an influence function. SDPS provides a reliable and fast method for the prediction of mining-induced displacements, strains, tilt, and so forth at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography. One of the key aspects in obtaining reliable ground deformation prediction results is the determination of the edge effect offset. The value assigned to the edge effect corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined out area. The objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset code within SDPS. Using known geometric equations, the newly developed code provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary line of the extracted panel for simplistic, as well as more complex, mining geometries. Assuming that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel by the user-defined edge effect offset distance. Surface deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel geometry. The MATLAB® program was used for development and testing of the new edge effect offset feature. In completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset features will be integrated into SDPS, further increasing the speed and reliability of the programs resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility. INTRODUCTION Underground operations have been known to cause mining-induced subsidence inside and outside of the mine permit area (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008). Additionally, subsidence can impact surface water bodies, such as rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015; Newman et al., 2016), as well as infrastructure, such as roads, railroads, pipelines, and buildings. With an increase in regulatory focus on mining-induced impacts to local structures, the calculation of mining-induced subsidence indices has become necessary in determining potential damage and mitigation efforts. The accurate prediction and evaluation of mining-induced ground deformations is required to obtain underground mining permits due to potential impacts to nearby structures, as well as hydrogeological sources. The prediction of ground deformation indices is often a complex task due to the number of input parameters required, such as mining geometries, overburden lithology, surface topography, the rate of mining (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008)."
