The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive. It may be quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is the rate at which the detonation wave propagates through an explosive within a blast hole or any restrained space. The unconfined velocity emanates when an explosive is detonated in the open. However, the confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually employed under a definite degree of confinement. This paper evaluates the increment of air deck volume and its effect on the VOD. The air gap (air deck) volume is increased stepwise from 10 to 30% of the total blast hole volume by reducing the stemming height in the collar zone. Thereafter, the VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column is conducted using the Dáutriche technique. It is observed that the VOD reduced with the increasing air deck volume and detonation failure is high when 30% of the blast hole volume is replaced with air deck. It is deduced that the increment of the air deck volume has an effect on the attenuation of the steady-state VOD.

Her talk contained a lot of fresh ideas, and practical versus theoretical concepts.”Talk about values, not economicsPraise was unanimous for Poulton, who gave a thought-provoking talk on “The New Face of Mining: The Culture Change for Compatible Mining.” Corporate social responsibility has been embraced by the metals mining industry, and it’s being done right, she said. “So why do we have more conflict? Why are there more protests? Why does permitting take longer and longer?” Poulton made a case for an approach based on compatible, rather than sustainable, mining to present a new face of mining that can be compatible with communities, cultures and the environment, and still be profitable. When the mining industry starts to talk about compatibility between what it is doing and what “me,” as the consumer, wants, what “we,” as citizens of a community, want, and what’s good for the “world,” we’re going to see the next culture change happen, she concluded."

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule in 2014 that required numerous changes in compliance dust sampling requirements for coal mine operators. Two key parts of this rule were the lowering of the respirable coal mine dust standard from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 and requiring operators of underground coal mines to use a continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) for compliance sampling. The CPDM currently approved for compliance sampling is equipped with a display that provides miners with in-shift information on their respirable dust exposure. The goal was to provide an indication of a potential overexposure and empower the miner and mine operator to implement changes in controls and/or operating practices to prevent an overexposure from occurring.

Shortcut methods are commonly employed for estimating mining costs for prefeasibility studies. Most of these methods, however, are suitable for earliest stage studies or for internal discussion purposes only. The experts at InfoMine?s CostMine division recommend that any cost estimate completed for purposes of significant decisionmaking or for compliance with Canada?s NI 43-101 requirements be completed using a determinative itemized method. The same basic principles apply for an early stage, intermediate stage, or advanced stage estimate. The only difference is in the level of detail and effort employed. ? Based on the results of a completed resource estimate, an itemized cost estimate begins with development of a conceptual mine plan. Using a surface mine as an example, four elements are crucial no matter what level of study is initiated. Basic geometry of the ore deposit and waste material, with a determination of the expected ratio of waste to ore, a reasonable pit slope angle, possibly requiring the completion of geotechnical studies to predict the waste-to-ore ratio with certainty. ? Determination of the assumed ore and waste production rates. ? Locations of all ore stockpiles and waste dumps. ? Segmental haulage distances and gradients for ore and waste.

Because cyanide is a naturally-occurring chemical, geochemical and biogeochemical mechanisms exist to retard or attenuate the movement of cyanide and its compounds in the subsurface and to degrade such compounds into low-hazard reaction products. The attenuation capacity of subsurface earth materials can be measured, predicted, and enhanced by simple and inexpensive procedures. The paper describes methods of testing the geochemical and biogeochemical attenuation capacity of the subsurface and offers general suggestions for methods of enhancing such capacity. It also presents examples of data which documents such attenuation.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

4.1 INTRODUCTION Metallurgical testing is required on any ore, waste or tailing material before amenability to heap leaching treatment can be accurately determined. The amount of testing necessary to determine and optimize heap leach amenability and conditions for any feed material is determined by the ore type, grade, size of deposit, and the overall financial commitment a particular company is willing to make. It is very easy to either "under-test" or "over-test" a particular deposit or feed material. A good heap leach testing program will provide the necessary design information without "bogging" down in too much detail. The three basic stages of ore testing include: • Preliminary--bottle roll tests and small column percolation leach tests; • Detailed--larger column tests, different feed sizes, and feed size optimization; and • Pilot-Scale--Column or field heap. The following subchapters describe the stages of heap leach testing necessary to put a viable property into production. 4.2 PRELIMINARY METALLURGICAL TESTING The two types of preliminary tests that can be undertaken include bottle roll or cyanide agitation tests and small column leach tests. Each of these is described below, along with information about what the test results provide in terms of furthering knowledge of ore qualities. 4.2.1 Bottle Roll Tests The first step in a heap leach testing program is preliminary bottle roll tests at a relatively coarse feed size to determine the ore&apos;s leachability. Bottle roll tests are usually conducted on reverse circulation drill cuttings samples (= 1/4 inch (6 mm) in size). Bottle roll tests provide initial information about precious metal recovery, recovery rate, and reagent requirements. The recovery results are to be considered maximums because attrition grinding creates fines and liberates recoverable values that would not be liberated from the material during a static leach. Bottle roll tests can be conducted on up to 25 lb (11 kg) ore charges of up to two inches (50 mm) in size. However, the coarser the feed the more attrition grinding occurs during rolling.

Near misses can enhance awareness of the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, the value of these reports and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks are unclear. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. The analysis provides insight into ways that risk-communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

"INTRODUCTION The existing Baltimore and Potomac (B&P) Tunnel accommodates Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) and MARC (Maryland Rail Corporation) service between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC and occasional local freight service. The Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel Replacement Project proposes new tunnel construction through Baltimore, Maryland along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) that maintains connections to Baltimore Pennsylvania Station. After the Replacement Project is constructed and operational, the disposition of the existing tunnel must be determined. The tunnel could be abandoned; however, considering its location in a congested downtown, alternative uses have been considered to take advantage of this unique piece of infrastructure by repurposing it. Alternative uses for the existing 140-year-old B&P Tunnel may end up being cost effective and should be considered, as the tunnel can be made accessible to construction crews for extended periods of time that will allow for efficient work activities unlike when it is fully operational. Possible alternatives include conversion for non-rail use, rehabilitation, or complete modernization for continued rail traffic. The following paper describes the four potential fates of the conceptual designs for the existing B&P Tunnel. The four concepts include: • No Build – rehabilitate to keep the tunnel operational. • Abandonment – complete or partial sealing of the tunnel. • Adaptive Re-Use –repurpose the tunnel with sustainable building practice. • Full Rehabilitation and Modernization – bring to current fire-life safety aspects. Of the four concepts, only the no build addresses maintaining the tunnel while it is under traffic. The remaining fates address the existing tunnel after the new tunnel is operational and railroad traffic has been diverted to it. Development of these conceptual designs were provided in a concept design study (Parsons Brinckerhoff/Parsons, 2015) that supports the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process for the Project, which includes evaluation of possible alternative uses of the existing B&P Tunnel."

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC&apos;s stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast&apos;&apos; because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. Tunnel project contract documents often present groundwater infiltration requirements for components of the underground portions of the project. All too often these documents require quantifiable target inflows for these components, but only refer to them in subjective terms such as “dry,” “manageable,” etc. The Contractor’s definition of these terms will inevitably differ from the Engineer’s definition of these terms. The purpose of this paper is to look at common subjective terms used in documents and provide suggestions for reasonable quantifiable language. Additionally, the paper will provide information and recommendations on relative levels of cost and effort increase needed to provide increasing levels of water cutoff (i.e., achieve “dryness”?).

A comprehensive strategic-planning model was developed for the phosphate strip-mining and chemical operations at White Springs, FL. The computerized model covers orebody modeling, production simulation and financial analysis. The model has several innovative features, including the use of NPV techniques in orebody block economics, the adaptation of the floating-cone method to a floating template for generating dragline mining units automatically, the use of interactive graphics for designing mining units, and the use of a dragline move economics algorithm for the automatic scheduling of mining-unit assignments and moves. The simulation of chemical-plant production uses linear programming and concentrate inventory levels to control mine-operating schedules.

The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTION Water spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles. Airborne particles of dust have long been known to carry a significant amount of electrostatic charge (Hopper and Laby, 1941; Kunkel, 1948; Kunkel, 1950; Dodd, 1952; Liu et al., 1987; Kutsuwada and Nakamura, 1989). It is reasonable to assume that presence of charge on particles will effect their agglomeration and particle-droplet interactions. Polat et al., (1991) showed that virtually all freshly generated dust particles were agglomerated in air. They suggested that electrostatic charge and humidity were important factors responsible for agglomeration. Previous theoretical studies on the interactions between charged particles and collectors by Nielsen and Hill (1976) show that, the collision efficiency is a strong function of the particle charge. In addition to charge on particles, spray droplets might also carry substantial amount of charge (Chapman, 1937;1938; Blanchard, 1958; Iribarne and Mason, 1967; Jonas and Mason, 1968; Byrne, 1977; Bailey, 1988). In theoretical studies of interactions between a spherical collector and airborne particle, it was found that the collision efficiency was significantly altered depending on whether the collector and the particles were charged. If neither the collector nor the particles carried a charge, the collision occurred by inertial and gravitational forces. The collisions took place on the front part of the collector (the front capture). If either of the collector or the particles were charged, the collision was enhanced due to the induced image forces. If both the collector and the particles were charged, the collision efficiency was significantly affected by the sign of the charge as well as its magnitude. For oppositely charged collector-particle pairs a collision could take place on the rear of the collector even if the particle flied past the collector upon approach (the rear capture) (Nielsen and Hill, 1976; Wang et al., 1986; Chang et al., 1987). On the other hand, the columbic force became negligible as the particle size increased and the inertial force became dominant. The electrostatic attraction was predominant for particles of less than about 2.5 µm in diameter. For particles larger than about 8 µm the inertia of particles was sufficient to overcome the columbic force and inertial impaction became the dominant collision mechanism (Grover and Beard, 1975; Chang, 1987). Previous studies of dust suppression using charged spray droplets generated by applying high voltage to the spray nozzle showed significant improvements in collection efficiencies (USBM open file report, 1983; McCoy et al., 1985). A mining CEO&apos;s willingness to participate in risky investment opportunities significantly affects a company&apos;s strategic-investment decisions. Decision-analysis techniques provide a mechanism for measuring a CEO&apos;s risk tolerance and ability to make formal comparisons of risk propensity among mining firms. The authors developed a methodology for measuring CEO risk tolerance. The findings from a confidential survey of mining CEOs are presented. The results from the survey suggest that: •mining CEOs are overwhelmingly risk averse when considering investment decisions; •CEOs of small mining firms are significantly more risk averse than CEOs of large mining firms; and •there appears to be some differences between Australian and non-Australian CEOs regarding their willingness to participate in risky investments. The results of this survey suggest that CEOs are pursuing objectives other than, or in addition to, maximizing shareholder wealth and that they act to reduce the financial exposure associated with strategic investments.

Derivatised 2,4-diketopyrimidine groups have been anchored to planar gold surfaces as self¬-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for chemical and photochemical studies. Three derivatives, 5-methyluracil (thymine), 5-trifluoromethyluracil and 5-nitrouracil, were chosen for the specific moiety present at position C-5, which can exert strong or weak inductive effects on the adjacent aromatic ring. The measured acidity constants decrease from 5-methyluracil to 5-nitrouracil as the inductive properties of the group at C-5 position increase. When grafted to the surface the acidity constants increase, albeit still adhering to the expected inductive trend. The functionality also exerts an influence on the surface wetting properties. Surface wettabilities indicate that the orientation of the pyrimidine groups at the surface occurs so that the C-5 position has a direct effect upon the surface chemistry. Upon dimerisation the surface contact angles increase signifi¬cantly. At pH 11 the contact angle changes reflect that the dimer has a higher pKa than the monomer. The monomer surface is deprotonated at this pH while the dimer surface is partially deprotonated, leading to changes in contact angle of up to 22 degrees. Large changes in contact angle were observed for 5-nitrouracil which were independent of surface charge and were appar¬ently due to conformational changes alone. Electrowetting of three fluoropolymer surfaces by electrolyte solutions was studied with the sessile drop method. The electrowetting curve (contact angle/potential) is analogous to the elec¬trocapillary curve (surface tension/potential) and may be described by a combination of the Young and Lippmann equations. We demonstrate that for some specific surfaces a systematic deviation occurs at positive potentials. This departure is attributed to double layer effects, namely the adsorption of hydroxide and halide anions. pH, ionic strength and polymer composi¬tion can all influence electrowetting behaviour.

INTRODUCTION Upflow Solids Contact Clarification is a process long employed in the treatment of potable water, wastewater and municipal sewage. This process incorporated in a fiberglass conical structure seems to offer an economical solution to problems encountered in reduction of particulates in uranium effuents. CONCEPT OF UPFLOW CLARIFICATION Use of suspended solids contact units date back to the 1930&apos;s. These types of units produced by Infilco and the Permutit Company, among others, were used in the Lime-Soda softening process to precipitate calcium and magnesium salts from hard water. In general, the process operated as follows: (a) Raw water entered a central chamber where it was mixed with chemicals. The chamber had provisions for agitating and circulating the chemicals so that mixing and reaction zones were formed. (b) The water, precipitated chemicals, floc and turbidity flows to a clarification chamber (the Permutit precipitator used a truncated cone). In most cases the influent then passes upward through a blanket of suspended floc and other solids before it leaves the chamber at effluent weirs or launders.
