Consideration is given to the technical and economic feasibility of freeze desalination as a technique for the simultaneous provision of ice to cool deep mines and for the desalination of mine water. Freeze desalination has not been developed fully or commercially. For sea-water applications, it may not offer significant advantages over other methods of desalination but, for the unique mining application, a single dual purpose plant that produces desalinated ice could offer significant cost savings over combinations of separate desalinators and ice-makers. The current status 01 freeze desalination is reviewed, and the important aspects relating to mines are discussed. Some freezing processes that could be suitably modified are described. The possible use of conventional ice-making machines for desalinating mine water is also discussed.

Minerals and Manpower - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. P. Plewman, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng) (Wits), M.A. (Oxon.) INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. An evaluation of the accuracy of tachometric and hot-wire anemometers in mine workings and gas-media ducts is given. The acoustic means of gas flow rates measurement is considered with particular reference to the equations of acoustic waves propagation in aerodynamic fields. The paper defines how it is possible to minimize the error of integrating acoustic anemometers.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

Colloquium on shaft sinking A successful colloquium which was attended by approximately 175 people was held on Shaft Sinking on the 15th November, 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented.
