"In the fall of 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began an inquiry as to the possibility of utilizing airplanes in conjunction with its rescue work, for quickly transporting engineers and oxygen rescue-apparatus to mine disasters.It was realised that this proposed use of airplanes has serious limitations, and if it were feasible, that the Bureau would have to rely on the cooperation of the established aviation fields of the U. S. Air Service for furnishing airplane service. Therefore Van. H. Manning, Director of the Bureau of Mines, under date of October 28, 1919, wrote the Director of Air Service outlining the rescue and first aid organization of the Bureau, the location of headquarters of district engineers, the distribution of safety cars and stations, and other essential details, and asking whether the Air Service could cooperate with the Bureau in the event of serious mine disasters. Major-General Charles T. Menoher, Director of Air Service, responded that the Air Service would be glad to cooperate insofar as possible, and designated those Air Service stations nearest the district engineers' headquarters, which might be best able to assist.The Bureau of Mines has ten mine rescue cars and eight mine safety stations distributed throughout the mining regions of the United States. The cars are each equipped with sets of oxygen mine-rescue breathing-apparatus and first-aid supplies. The car personnel consists of a mining engineer, surgeon, foreman, first-aid miner, clerk and cook. A foreman miner is in charge of each station and at five of the eight stations are mine safety trucks. The work of the cars and stations is two-fold; (1) Assisting in rescue and recovery work at mine disasters, and (2) training miners in mine rescue and first-aid methods, and in investigations looking to prevention of mine accidents. The country is divided into nine safety districts, with nine district engineers in charge."

HELIUM shipments in 1963 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 14th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines plants were 627.3 million cubic feet, an increase of 5 percent over the volume shipped in 1962. Production from Bureau of Mines plants totaled 774.2 million cubic feet. The Bureau purchased 1,420 million cubic feet of helium in the helium conservation program and stored it underground for future use. Each of the five plants, financed and built by private industry for helium conservation, made deliveries during the year. Helium continued to playa key role in space, atomic energy, defense, and other research programs. Additional capacity for liquefying helium became available, and the first civilian helium-cooled nuclear-powered reactor in the United States began pre-operation testing.

The Bureau of Mines investigated carbonyl processing techniques for the recovery of the critical metals Ni, Co, Mn, and Cr from domestic primary and secondary sources. In most cases, the source materials require reductive precarbonylation treatment to metallize the contained Fe, Ni, and Co compounds to render them reactive with CO. The critical metals were recovered either by direct conversion to the respective carbonyls or as upgraded products by carbonyl removal of an undesirable metal. Best metal-to-metal carbonyl conversion was under CO pressure, from 80 atm upward, and at 1400 C. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of HzS in small quantities. CO pressure, temperature, promoter and pretreatment trends, and other factors enhancing metal carbonyl formation are presented.

Develop a training program to help mine workers effectively fight small fires in underground Goal mines. Training would enable miners to make rapid judgments on whether to attempt extinguishment, and how best to use the firefighting equipment on hand. Approach Fire reports were analyzed to define and delineate physical and behavioral variables which affect firefighting activities, and to determine effective procedures for extinguishing small fires. A course was then designed to train miners in such procedures. Finally, the course was reviewed by industry experts and administered to a group of miners to determine needed revisions and to validate the course. How It Works Analysis of fire data showed that six items should be emphasized in teaching proper fire response: 1. Alertness to fire potential. 2. Immediate power cutoff. 3. Internal, external communication. 4. Teamwork in fighting fires. 5. Role of ventilation and position of men inby the fresh air side. 6. Effective use of fire suppressant materials.

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal-mine-type short-delay electric detonators marketed by three domestic manufacturers to determine the accuracy of delays and the probability of overlap between adjacent de- lay periods. The Winzer index was computed and compared with the probability of overlap. A close agreement between the Winzer criterion and overlap probability was demonstrated. A permissible blasting unit capable of delivering a maximum firing energy of 4.0 J and a digital oscilloscope were used to measure the delay time with an accuracy of 20.25 ms. Another oscilloscope and a pulse transformer were used to record firing current. Experimental data indicated negligible overlap probability in detonators of shorter delay periods: periods 1 to 4, which correspond to 25 to 250 ms. However, a significant probability of overlap was detected in some detonators of longer delay periods: periods 5 to 9, which cor- respond to 300 to 500 ms.

This report abstracts project work performed under USBM Grant GO155003 during the period 4 November 1975 to 3 November 1976. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

A versatile torsion creep tester was instrumented with electromechanical and servomechanical components to operate automatically and unattended, producing digital printed outputs. The apparatus uses an electrical system for applying torsional stresses, and a unique angular transducer as a null detector operating a servocontrolled strain measuring system with the digital readout. The tester is designed to measure the creep in single-crystal or polycrystalline zinc, zinc alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other metals and alloys. Applied stresses may be varied from zero up to 2,000 psi in the outermost fibers of a 1/8-inch-diameter, 4-inch-long specimen. Strain readings to 0.001 degree, equivalent to a strain of 2.73 X 10-7, may be made automatically from one every 5 seconds to one per month. The apparatus has provisions for programed temperature control and special atmospheres or vacuum operation. A discussion of applications of the system to other mechanical testing apparatus is included.

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. Relative enthalpies of V20S from 298.15 to 1,101.0 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide data needed for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter. A sharp melting point was found at 951 K, with [~~ = 15.690 kcal/ mol ] for the standard enthalpy of melting. Tabulated values are given at selected temperature increments between 298.15 and 1,500 K for the standard relative enthalpy [(HO -H~98),] heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)/T]. Standard relative enthal-pies are also given in equation form and combined with data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

As part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines devised a processing sequence for recovering uranium from carbonaceous ores. Uranium extractions of 97 pct were obtained by contacting the ore with a solution containing 400 grams of ferric sulfate hydrate in 200 ml water for 3 hr at boiling temperature (96° C). Uranium was recovered from the leaching solution by solvent extraction with tri-issooctyl amine. The barren ferric sulfate solution was recycled to the leaching system. The leaching process resulted in no detectable dissolution of carbonaceous material from the ore. Work on the project was terminated in 1978 because of a transfer of responsibility to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine if low-grade California chromite ores could be beneficiated to produce products suitable for commercial use. This research is part of a Bureau goal to provide technology capable of using low-grade domestic ores to meet emergency demands of the Nation for metals and minerals and in particular those minerals, such as chromite, which are considered critical. Two ores from California were ground and treated using gravity concentration and magnetic separation techniques. An are from Auburn in central California, assaying 2.5 pct Cr203, was treated by tabling and magnetic separation to yield a nonmagnetic product containing 44.7 pct Cr203 at a recovery of 36.4 pct. Core drilling samples from the Seiad Creek area of northern California, assaying about 6 pct Cr203, were upgraded by tabling to yield a concentrate containing nearly 50 pct Cr203 with a recovery of 50 pct. Both products are suitable for metallurgical and/or chemical use.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of controlled additions of selected metal oxides, as well as the adjustment of the calcia-to-silica ratio on the high-temperature strength of refractory-grade periclase. Increases in the hot flexural strength of some periclase materials in the range of threefold to fourfold were obtained with additions of Zr02 and by adjustment of the CaO:Si02 ratio to the 2.5 to 3.0 level. Results show that for each periclase refractory raw material, there exists a combination of level of Zr02 addition and an adjustment to the CaO:Si02 ratio that optimizes the hot flexural strength of each of these materials. Data also indicate that the improved hot strengths can be attributed to the high-temperature secondary phases formed between the different levels of periclase impurities and the additives, resulting in improved intergranular high-temperature bond strength.

"Particles play an important role in our environment and in many aspects of human activity. Much of the Earth's surface - sand, soil, rocks - consists of particles, as do clouds in the atmosphere, smoke from fires, and dust in our homes. Many of the foods we eat - cereals, flour, instant coffee - and everyday items such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents and other cleaning products are encountered in the form of particles. Inks and paints consist of very fine particles dispersed in liquids. Modem agriculture uses huge quantities of fertilizers and pesticides, largely in particulate form. The list could be extended almost indefinitely; particle systems are obviously an important part of our daily lives. But what do we know about them? For most people, the answer is probably: not much.We are all familiar with the three common states of matter: gas, liquid and solid. In many respects, particle systems should be regarded as a distinct class of their own. The particles themselves may be solid but we all know that a heap of sand is quite different from a solid rock. A cloud of liquid droplets - fog - has much more in common with a cloud of solid particles - smoke - than it does with a bucket of water. There are certain characteristics and properties which are unique to the particulate state. The behavior of any particle system is determined not only by the material from which the particles are made, but also by interactions among the particles and with their environment. These interactions become increasingly important as the size of the particles decreases, and for exceedingly fine particles, smaller than about one micrometer (0.000001 meters or 0.00004 inches), these interactions dominate and we enter the realm of colloidal systems.Particle SystemsA system in which discrete entities - particles -are dispersed in a continuous medium can be regarded as a particulate system. The particles and the medium can consist of a solid, liquid or gas. The various combinations and some common examples are listed in Table 1. The properties and behavior of these systems depend on the characteristics of the particles, the nature of the medium, and the relative abundance of the two phases. In general, it is the latter which determines the kind of behavior exhibited by the system.As a general rule, the behavior of particle systems follows that of the dispersed phase (the particles) at high concentration, and that of the continuous phase (the medium) at low concentration. For example, both powders and smokes consist of solid particles in a gaseous medium. However, in a powder the solids typically occupy over one half of the total volume; in many respects powders behave like solids. In a smoke, on the other hand, the particles may take up only a few parts per million of volume, so that these systems generally behave like gases."

"In our laboratory several impactors have been developed in the past which have penetration characteristics that approximate that of the ACGIH or the British MRC respirable curves. In these impactors the large nonrespirable particles are collected on an impaction plate of a multiple round nozzle stage where the nozzles are of different diameters. The principle for designing a respirable cut impactor is quite simple in that the respirable curve is divided into two or more segments and the nozzles are designed with the correct diameters and number of nozzles to have collection characteristics with 50% cutpoints at the center of each segment. The particles not collected on the impaction plates are then collected upon a filter. These particles represent the respirable fraction of the aerosol. Therefore the respirable curve is approximated in a stepwise fashion with the approximation becoming better as the respirable curve is divided up into increasing numbers of segments. It has generally been felt that three segments is satisfactory for most cases.A new version of the respirable impactor has recently been developed in our laboratory. This impactor approximates the ACGIH respirable curve in three steps at a flow rate of 30 liters per minute. However, unlike previous models where all of the particles larger than the three cut points designated by the three steps are collected upon one impaction plate, a separate impaction plate is now used for each of the three cut sizes. To approximate the respirable curve in three steps, the cut sizes must be 2.2, 3.5 and 5.8 microns diameter. Therefore, on each of these stages the particles collected will be the mass of particles that are larger than these three cut sizes. By determining the mass of particles collected on each of these three stages plus that on the after filter using Gravimetric techniques, some information can be obtained on the size distribution of the aerosol being sampled. Furthermore, the impaction plates of the three stages are rotated and the nozzles are placed in such a position such that a uniform deposit is obtained on each of the impaction plates. Therefore, the deposits collected are suitable for X-ray fluorescence analysis or other types of analysis where a uniform deposit is required."

[Composition profiles for atomic, radical, and stable species, as well as temperature and area expansion ratio profiles, have been determined for a nearly stoichiometric CH4-02-Ar flame and one to which 0.3 percent CF5Br inhibitor had been added. Net reaction rate profiles were calculated for all the observed species. For the normal flame, these and the mole fraction profiles gave rate coefficient information about the elementary reactions in the methane flame, for example, CH. + 0 4- H2CO 0 H, k4 = 1.05 X 1014CM3 mole-1sec-1 for 1,550§T 0,725' K; CO + OH 4 C02 + H, k6= 4.7 X 1011 for 1,350{T X1,750° K. Comparison between the inhibited and normal flame showed that A] and [CH3] were significantly reduced at the lower temperatures in the inhibited flame even though in the hot gas region the [E] [OH!, and [0] were essentially the same in both flames. The CF3Br disappears very early in the flame, relative to the fuel, and the reaction primarily responsible for its disappearance is H v CF3Br 4 HBr + CF3, where k7 is found to be 2.2 X 1014 exp(-9460/RT) for 700-1,550° K. Reaction of the inhibitor with methyl radicals provides for the relatively small amounts of CH3Br observed, but CH3 + Br2 - CHs Br + Br must also occur. The HBr formed reacts rapidly with H atoms to form H2 and Br, but the reaction is soon "balanced" in the flame as may be demonstrated by calculation of the equilibrium constant at various temperatures. The fluoro-carbon fragment produced in reaction (7) also reacts rapidly, in part with methyl radicals to give the observed elimination product CH2CF2 Later in the flame, above -1,400' K, F2CO is formed from the reaction CH2CF2 + 0 P F2CO + CH2 and k., -1.5 X 1013 at 1,600° K. The rather slow decay of carbonyl fluoride is attributed to reaction with H atoms according to the sequence F2CO I H - HF + FCO and FCO + H HF + CO.]

The technical feasibility of using energy from explosive ignitions of coal dust to pump water was .demonstrated in an exploratory investigation. Ignition of small amounts of pulverized coal that were dispersed in air over columns of water pumped up to 5.3 gallons of water per cycle when operated against a head of 30.75 feet. Water displacement was accomplished by either manual or automatic operation through a single cycle, and by automatic operation through a continuous series of cycles of I-minute duration. Operating through single cycles, slurries containing up to 3 pounds of coal and 4.6 gallons of water were also pumped. Possible uses of an efficient coal-fired pump would include pumping water for irrigation purposes, removing water from mines, transporting coal from mines in the form of a slurry, and pumping water to elevated reservoirs at electric powerplants so that it could be used to generate electricity during peak periods of demand.

Improve ground control in longwall gate entries by developing a practical method for evaluating longwall pillar designs. Background Longwalls have emerged as the most important technology to be applied to underground mining since the continuous mining machine. Longwall mines currently produce more than 30 pct of all the underground coal mined in the United States, up from less than 5 pct just 15 years ago. Safe longwall mining depends on maintaining ground control in the gate entries, the lifelines that provide access to the longwall face. In multientry retreat mining as practiced in the United States, rows of chain pillars are left to protect the gate entries (see figure 1). Chain pillars are subject to severe and complex abutment loads during the process of longwall panel extraction. The design of these pillars is often the single most important element in gate entry ground control and has been the subject of intensive Bureau of Mines research.

Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum, The economic development of the country depended on the production and export of crude on. Output was estimated to be 49 million barrels in 1985 compared with 56 million barrels in 1984 and 47 million barrels in 1988. The country's only refinery consumed approximately 12% of the daily production of crude oil while operating at slightly over 50% capacity. The refinery output, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economic prospects were heavily dependent on the oil sector, which bad been responsible for the recent strong growth in the economy. The country consistently sought to avoid the problems associated with an overdependence on oil and followed a relatively broad-based development strategy, using oil revenues to sustain and encourage growth in other sectors. Approximately 75% of the gross domestic product (GDP) was attributed to the mineral industry in some form. GDP growth was approximately 6.5% during 1985.
